Kim's Video (dir. David Redmon & Ashley Sabin) x VIFF 2023.
I did not expect a substantial detour about political corruption in a small Italian municipality in a documentary about the legacy of New York City's once iconic underground home video rental store closing. Nonetheless, the nostalgic exploration of our past movie consumption through the history of this particular business gives us a glimpse into the importance of physical media.
Screened at the 2023 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Spectrum series.
Screening at the Rio Theatre on Apr. 14.

I made a list of film festivals
Heads up Film Twitter: I made a list of #FilmFestivals. #Film #Movies
He friends, I made a thing. I made a list of upcoming film festivals for my own reference, and I figured that others might find it useful, too. I know there are ways to find this info, but I like having it all in one big list, and I figure I can’t be the only one.  This list is by no means exhaustive; it’s just the festivals that are presently on my radar. If you were wondering: yes, there are…

Film can be powerful. It can open our eyes to the hardships others have to face, yet more importantly it can be a window into their soul. We don’t just see the subject at that point, we feel it. VFS graduate Ruggero Romano’s Downtown Eastside (Vancouver) documentary, V6A, has made that abundantly clear at the 2019 Italian Film Festival, a gripping profile that shows the true spirit within Vancouver’s beating heart.
“I had tons of footage, and the majority of it was not about getting the shot,” he says. “It was always about listening to the person. The camera was just an excuse for that person to be heard, and that person got heard just because they had the chance to speak and someone was listening to them. Those moments were priceless. There’s no way to describe it, for me.”
Human soul is a phenomenal subject, and knowing when to let the subject shine is a quality great filmmakers understand. Excellent work, Ruggero! Check out the linked interview to learn more about Ruggero and his experience!

Send My Love (To Your New Lover) Part Nine
Summary: It’s time for ACL.
Warnings: fluff, mentions of sex, drinking
A/N: Here we are. Part 9 a day early! I’m not entirely happy with this part, I moved things a long pretty quick, but I’m hoping part 10 will be better. My husband, son, and I have all been sick with the flu, so my mind has been foggy and I feel like I haven’t been able to get my ideas to play out right. We’ll see. Not every part is a winner. But I hope you all enjoy!
Tumblr media
The following day you’re sitting in the back of a car headed to set for a night shoot, with little Juno sleeping in your lap, and scrolling through your Instagram feed, when you suddenly become overrun by notifications. You check to see what could possibly be going on and find the People Magazine has tagged you in a post. You click on it to see what it is. Probably just them giving people sneak peeks of you on set or something. What you weren’t expecting, were the pictures of you and Jake kissing on the sidewalk outside of the sandwich shop.
“Shit shit shit.” You guys had tried your best to keep everything quiet, you weren’t ready for the world to know. You take a screen shot and send it to Jake before calling him. He answers after the second ring.
“Hey, I was just getting ready to call you.” You hear the ding on the other side of the phone. He must have gotten your picture.
“Look at that. I just sent you something.” You try to hide the anxiousness in your voice.
“Yeah, I saw it. I just got slammed with notifications.”
“Me too. What are we going to do?”
“Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to let them ruin what we have. I know we haven’t officially said anything or really talked about it, but I want to be with you. I want to show you off. I want this.”
“No, I do too. I just-I was-I just wanted it to ours for a while longer. Not because I don’t want everyone to know about us, but because I liked that it was just us and our small circle of people that knew.”
“I understand that. I liked it too, but we should have known this was going to happen eventually. I mean, I’m not a small name in the film industry and your name is growing bigger every day. You’re not just being known for being Anne Walker, anymore.”
“I know. I just wish we could have been the ones to tell everyone.”
“Me too, but it’s out and all we can do is run with it. I love spending time with you and I want you to be my girl. I didn’t really want to do this over the phone, but there isn’t any going back.”
You’re quiet for a minute. “You really want to be with me?”
“Why wouldn’t I? You’re amazing and beautiful and you have the biggest heart of anyone I know.” You can hear his smile in his voice and it makes you smile. “I know, you’re nervous about me, but I promise you that I’m not like him. I’ve been trying to show you that this entire time. You deserve someone who will treat you the way you deserve to be treated. I know he messed you up pretty bad, but I’m going to make you believe in love again.”
“I want to be with you. You make me so happy, happier than I’ve been in a long time.” You bite your lip. “Let’s do this, Jake. Let’s show the world.”
“Hell fucking yeah!”
You laugh at his outburst. “I guess we have some phone calls to make. I don’t really want my parents finding out about you in some magazine article and I should call Jane and Amanda to let them know what’s going to happen during interviews and things.”
“Okay. Well, I’m done with set today, but I was going to come back and have dinner with you. I thought we could avoid the food tent and I could grab some food from your favorite Italian place.”
“Oh my gosh! Yes! I could definitely go for their chicken parm! I don’t deserve you. You’re the best!”
He laughs. “You deserve the world. Just call me when you know what time you’ll be eating, and I’ll be there.”
“You’re the best, Jake.” You smile, petting Juno a she looks up at you.
“No problem, babe. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Talk to you later.” You hang up and enjoy the rest of your ride to set with a smile on your face.
+++
Your parents and everyone else were happy that you finally found someone that makes you happy. Jared and Gen kept pushing you to bring him home for ACL and on vacation with you all, but you told them that you would have to talk to Jake. You didn’t want to assume that he would go anywhere just yet, but you had to ask him soon. You were flying out to Texas in two weeks.
You were sitting around set between scenes, when Gen text you, asking if you had asked him yet. You bite you lip and look around. Hoping to catch sight of your boyfriend. You spot him moving to his mark as the crew around him sets up for filming. He looks over at you and smiles. Things have been going great since the photos came out. Filming was almost done, and you couldn’t wait to relax a little before you had to fly back and forth to Atlanta and Vancouver. You were nervous to ask Jake about ACL and Greece.
You stood up from your chair and walked over to him, while everyone was still setting. When you’re close enough, he reaches out and puts his hands on your hips. You both lean in for a kiss. When you pull apart you just smile at him for a moment.
“What’s up?”
“I have something to ask you.” You run your hands up his arms, until they reach his shoulders. “I’m hoping that you’ll say yes, but I’ll understand if you can’t or don’t want to.”
“Well, I’m sure I’ll want to, as long as you will be with me.”
“Of course, I will be, but I don’t want you to feel like you have to.”
“Just spit it out.” He laughs.
“Jared and Gen have been bugging me for weeks, to ask you if you would come to Texas and Greece with me. Every year we go to this music festival in Texas and we usually take a trip, sometimes with the kids and sometimes without. This year the kids are staying with Gen’s parents for the week. I’ve arranged my schedule enough that I’ll be able to keep up the tradition, before I have to fly back here and finish filming those last two weeks. Then after filming they’ll be flying here on their way home from Rome and Jared and I are going to fly back to Vancouver together. And then-“
“Y/N. Breathe, babe.” He cuts off your rambling.
“Sorry, I just have everything planned out. I had it all planned out before I met you and I know it’s last minute to ask you, but I was nervous.”
“When are you supposed to leave?”
You scrunch your face. “Two weeks.”
He huffs out a breath. “Two weeks?”
“Yeah, I’m sorry. I should have asked you earlier.”
“No, it’s fine. I’ll have to check my schedule, but I’m pretty sure I don’t have anything going on for a little while. We won’t start the press tour until December and we are almost done filming. You said we would get back before the last two weeks of filming?” You nod. “I’m sure I can work something out. I know I can make it to Texas for sure, but I’ll have to let you know about Greece.”
You smile. “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure. I would get to spend some more time with my best girl, why wouldn’t I want to go?”
You wrap your arms around his neck and hug him close. “I seriously don’t deserve you.” He laughs and hugs you close before the director calls everyone to their spots. “I’m gonna go call Genevieve! I’ll book your ticket too! Oh my gosh, this is great!” You kiss him once, twice, three times before running off. His laughter following you.
+++
Before you knew it, you and Jake were walking through the airport, looking for Jared after grabbing your luggage.
“I don’t know how we haven’t seen him. He’s the tallest guy I know and yet, I can’t find him anywhere.”
“Well, he’s here somewhere. We’ll find him.”
You scroll through your contacts until you find Jared’s name and call him. Putting the phone to your ear, you wait for him to pick up as you continue to look around.
“Hello?”
“Where are you? We just picked up our luggage. You said you were going to meet us by the carousel.”
“I’m coming. I thought I had found the perfect parking spot, but then found out that someone parked their scooter in it. Who drives a scooter to the airport? I’m walking through the doors now.”
You turn towards the entrance and spot his beanie covered head. “Oh, I see you!” You wave you arm that was holding the phone, in the air, since the other one was holding Juno. He catches the movement out of the corner of his eye and turn towards you. A big smile gracing his face and you both hang up. You speed walk towards him, careful not to lose Jake or your luggage.
“I forgot who short you were! How are you smaller than Gen?” He goes to pull you into a hug, but you punch him in the gut. He laughs and drags you towards him. “It’s great to see you, Bug.”
“I missed you! London has been great, but nothing beats Texas!”
“Well let’s get you home.” He turns towards Jake and sticks his hand out. “Hey man. It’s great to see you.”
“Likewise. Thanks for letting me tag along with Y/N.”
“No problem. We wouldn’t leave her alone until she asked you.”
“Okay. Let’s get home to Gen. I want to see the kids!”
“Alright. Calm down.” The men laugh as Jared takes your luggage from you and Jake wraps his am around your waist and pulls you close, careful not to jostle the husky puppy too much.
+
You all spent the first couple of days just hanging around with the kids and swimming. Jared’s parents watched the kids one night, so the four of you could go out. Finally, ACL came, and you were beyond excited. You couldn’t wait to share the experience with Jake and to have a blast with your best friends.
After getting dressed and eating breakfast, you all pile in Gen’s SUV. Halfway to the field, Jared glances at you in the rearview mirror. “Hey, Bug?”
You meet his gaze. “Yeah, Moose?”
“I thought I should warn you that uh-that Jensen and Danneel will be there.” He watches for a reaction and kind of surprised when you don’t explode.
“I kind of figured he would, Jare. He goes every year, just like I do. He’s not going to take this from me. I brought him to his first festival.”
“I know. I just wanted to let you know. That way there wouldn’t be any surprises, like with the lake.”
You huff a laugh. “He’s not gonna rain on my parade. I’ve got my man, I’ve got my cute puppy, and I’ve got my best friends. I’m going to have the best time ever.” You smile at him. A genuine smile.
He smiles back. His eyes crinkling in the mirror. “That’s my girl.”
“He is going to ask questions though. He already has been, but we haven’t told him much about you guys.” Gen pipes up from her spot in the passenger seat, turning back to look at you and Jake.
“Not like it’s any of his business, but he’ll get all the answers he needs today.” Jake puts his two-cents in, putting his hand on your knee as you nod.
The rest of the drive is filled with lighter conversation until Jared is being directed into a parking spot. You all climb out and meet at the trunk. Jake takes Juno from you, giving you a break from holding her. You open your backpack and pull out headphones that you often see infants wear during loud events. Juno was mostly deaf, and you didn’t want to damage it anymore than it was. You slipped the headphones over her ears and laugh at how cute she is, the others laughing with you.
“Poor girl, but this is for the best. You know that she would have been fine if you had left her with Arlo.” Jared says behind you.
“Yeah, but she doesn’t know where she is, and I don’t know how she would do. She’s always with me, it wouldn’t be right to leave her at home. Plus, she still chews things up every now and then. We would get home and find her asleep in one of your shoes, Moose. Probably passed out from all of the fumes.”
“Ha ha ha. My feet don’t stink.”
“Sure, they don’t sweetie.” Gen jokes with him as she rubs his arm in affection.
You all laugh before moving with the crowd, VIP tickets within your grips. Your own spot carved out in the crowd. A little pavilion near the main stage, loaded with food and drinks and a couple of couches and chairs.
Once your all settled, Jake puts Juno down and you clip her leash on her collar. She’s bigger to the point, that you don’t have to worry about people stepping on her, if she walks around on her own. As long as she keeps her headphones on, she should be pretty happy. You’re excited to see all the people and listen to all the great bands that are lined up for the weekend.
You turn to Jake as he offers you an open beer before opening his own. “Let’s go walk around. I want to see what food trucks are here! Last year, they had the best taco truck and if it’s here again, I’m so getting some.” He laughs but takes your hand.
“Lead the way.”
You turn to Gen and Jared. “Are you guys coming?”
Jared looks apprehensive as he looks from Gen to you. “We’re gonna wait for Jensen. You know he always gets lost when he first gets here.”
You slump a little but understand. “Okay. We’ll be back soon.”
He gives you a nod and Gen gives you a smile, before you and Jake head out into the crowd.
You both know it’s unavoidable that you will be spotted, so you just enjoy each other and everything around you. Jake wrapping his arm around your waist and pulling you into him as you wrap an arm behind his back. You lean up and kiss his, careful not to bump the brims of your baseball hats.
“You’re going to love it. This is by far the best music festival around.”
“I’m sure it’ll be great. Just being here with you, already makes it the best.” He smiles down at you as you laugh.
“God, you’re so cheesy.”
“Yeah, but you love it.”
You just laugh and nod. You’re both spotted by a small group of girls. They shyly move towards you both, excitement on their faces, phones being pulled form their back pockets. You give them a smile and wave as the move in front of you.
“Oh my gosh! I can’t believe it! I never thought I’d get to meet you here!”
“You’re both here! So, it’s true! You guys are so cute together!”
“This is amazing! Can we get a picture with you guys?”
The girls throw questions around as pictures are being taken and you both sign their lanyards. You answer questions as easy as possible, without giving too much away. You leave them with smiles and waves.
“Does that happen every time?”
“Every year, but we ask for it when we come out here. The fans in the area have pretty much learned that we come every year, so they are always on the lookout for us.”
“And it doesn’t keep you from coming?”
“No, are fans are everything to us. Without them, we wouldn’t have gotten this far. We would have been done a long time ago. So, we never turn them away.”
“I guess, I never really understood that. I’ve never had to really deal with this.”
“I guess it’s different being on a long running tv show, then being in movies.”
“That and my fan following is usually older. I haven’t done a lot of family friendly movies.”
“Well if you stick around long enough, then you’ll fit in really quick.”
“I’m not going anywhere.” He draws you in closer and kisses your temple.
+++
After walking around for a while, you both decide to head back to your pavilion. You’re anxious to see Jensen again. Not because you care what he thinks, but because you haven’t seen him since Comic-Con and things were tense. You know he brought Danneel with him and it’s going to be awkward, you both brought your significant others, and this will be the first time that anything like this has happened.
Juno stops outside of the cemented platform to use the bathroom and Jake takes her leash so that you can move inside, while he stands with her. You don’t see Jared and Gen or even Jensen when you move in. You see that familiar head of red hair. Her back towards you as she looks through the snacks that were provided for you. You try to act like it doesn’t bother you that she’s here, like she didn’t help destroy your relationship.
You move through the area and she hears someone behind her and turns. For the first time, you both stare at each other.
“Oh. I didn’t know you were going to be here.” She tells you.
Keeping calm, you tell her, “I come every year. I’m the one the introduced Jensen to it.”
“He didn’t tell me.”
“Yeah, he’s good about that.”
“Look, I don’t want this to be awkward, but-“
“Just-Let’s not even say anything. I’ve never talked to you. I might have moved on finally, but that I’m not still pissed off. I’m here to have a good time with my best friends and my boyfriend. You’re here to have a good time with Jensen. Let’s keep it that way, by keeping that subject locked away. I’m not saying we’ll be best friends forever, but we can act civil towards each other.”
She studies you for a moment before nodding and turning towards the fridge. “Would you like a beer?”
“Sure. Can I have two please? I’m sure Jake will want one once he comes inside with Juno.”
“Juno?” She turns her head to look at you as she pulls the beers from the fridge.
“My dog.”
“Oh. I thought-“
“I know.” You huff a sarcastic laugh. “Don’t worry, he’s not hiding any children from you.”
She turns and hands the beers to you as voices rise behind you. Laughter and male voices talking over each other before three tall man and a tiny woman move in. The four-missing people from your party all come to a stop when they see you and Danneel standing close to the fridge. You take the beers from her and move towards Jake after he lets Juno off of her leash. You hand him one of the beers and he pulls you into his side.
“Everything okay?” He asks as you give him a small smile.
“Yeah, everything’s fine.” You tell him as you cast your gaze over to Dee one more time before shifting your eyes to the others. “Hi Jensen.”
He clears his throat. “Hey, Y/N/N” He says before moving over towards Danneel and taking the beer she offers him.
+++
As the night goes on, the tension becomes less and less. Everyone acts as if nothing is wrong for the sake of each other. You and Jake standing in the crowd listening to all the different band and singers playing their hit songs. Pictures being taken often with fans. Jared and Jensen taking their fair number of pictures with fans, just like you. The three of you often squeezing together for pictures with fans. Letting the alcohol flow through you, keeping everything at ease and everyone happy. You dance with Gen and make nice conversation with Danneel. You all look like the happiest group of friends to the crowd around you.
Eventually the last performer finishes their set and the crowd starts to thin. You always book rooms in the hotel down the street and decide to walk over instead of risking your lives, by one of you trying to drive.
You and Jake get settled into your room. You had already taken a shower and was making a call down to the front desk to see if you could still order anything from the kitchen. When they give you the answer you were looking for, you call down to the kitchen and order a cart full of food and sweets. Everything sounding great in your alcohol fussed mind.
You’re finishing up your order, when the bathroom door opens and out walks Jake in just a towel. You hang up and just watch him move around the room. Seeing him still damp from his shower, hair a mess from being towel dried, it made your stomach flutter. It’s not like you two hadn’t been intimate. You were grown adults with needs. But seeing him look so relaxed around you, so fit. It did something to a girl.
You stand up from the couch across the room and move towards him as his fixes his shirt to pull over his head. As he’s getting ready to pull it on, you pull it from his hands, causing him to look at you. One look from you and he already knows what’s going through your mind. He turns and gathers you in his arms as you throw yours around his neck and pull him in for a deep kiss. His clothes being forgotten and yours soon falling to the floor, before you both fall into bed.
The perfect ending to the perfect day.

“Debbie Rochon grew up in British Columbia, Canada. She was a child of the streets and victim of much abuse until she accidentally ended up in a featured extra role in Paramount's Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains (1982)! The event changed her life, and she saved enough money to move to New York City and study acting. After many years working with numerous theater companies in off-Broadway plays, she started to land small roles in films. Spike Lee's editor Barry Alexander Brown cast her in a featured role in his first directing effort, Lonely in America(1990). Soon the parts grew bigger and bigger and primarily fell in the fear flick genre. After spending three months as a featured extra on the 1980 filmed Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains (1982) movie set, Debbie was still a fledgling actor but took on the female lead in the Leonard Melfi one act play Ferryboat. It was indeed synchronicity for Debbie to cut her acting teeth on a play about the Staten Island Ferry, by 1984 she moved from her home town of Vancouver, B.C. to New York City. For the rest of the 1980s she spent most of her time studying acting at Michael Chekhov Studios under Ted Pugh, Lee Strasberg Institute under Penelope Allen, NYC's Chicago City Limits under David Regal and H.B. Studios under William Hickey, Carol Rosenfeld and Uta Hagen. Debbie spent all her time working in plays on Theatre Row in NYC, mostly in new works by playwrights and shooting NYU thesis films with burgeoning filmmakers. By 1988 she started to land small roles with grind-house indie filmmakers Roberta Findlay and Chuck Vincent. She made two films with each film maker by 1989, in both cases they would be the last, or close to very last, films both directors would helm before retiring. By the early 1990s, Debbie was working with multiple theatre companies in NYC including The Tribeca Lab where she played multiple characters in Stephen DiLauro play The Secret Warhol Rituals. In 1993 Debbie began her career in radio co-producing and co-hosting Oblique Strategies on the terrestrial channel WBAI. 1994 was the beginning for Debbie to land lead roles in film. Abducted II: The Reunion (1995) would be the first, and in 1995 she co-stared in her first Troma produced film Tromeo and Juliet (1996) co-directed by James Gunn and Lloyd Kaufman. This would also be the year Debbie would be given her first writing column which appeared in The Job Bob Report, published by John Bloom. She would also pen for numerous genre publications including The Phantom of the Movies' Videoscope magazine which she still writes for today. Of the multiple roles she would portray by decade's end it would be Hellblock 13 (1999), co-staring Gunnar Hansen, that would begin the wheels turning for a new type of role she would soon be known for. During the 1996-1998-time frame Debbie would co-produce and co-host Illumination Gallery for the internet's first on-line radio station Pseudo Radio. In 2000 director Jon Keeyes cast Debbie in the now cult classic American Nightmare (2002) which garnered much acclaim with legit reviewers and audiences alike. Her role as Jane Toppan would solidify her as a go-to actor for roles of the off-kilter and intense kind. By 2002 Debbie began working for Full Moon Entertainment, starring in four feature films with the company. She continued to write for genre publications and contributed chapters to horror themed books. In 2005 Debbie joined forces with what was then known as Scream TV. The company bought Fangoria magazine and Debbie began producing short documentaries including Fangoria Presents: Slither Behind the Scenes (2006). In 2006 they launched Fangoria Radio for Sirius/XM where she co-produced and co-hosted the show with Twisted Sister front-man Dee Snider until 2010. The following year Debbie was granted her own column in the magazine called Diary of the Deb, the first column written by a woman for the publication, it was nominated for three Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards for best column, winning the esteemed statue in 2014. During this decade Debbie also gave critically acclaimed turns in works inspired by some of her favorite classical writers; Tales of Poe (2014) (Edgar Allan Poe), Mark of the Beast (2012) (Rudyard Kipling) and Colour from the Dark (2008) (H.P. Lovecraft). Debbie appeared on the VH1 reality TV show Scream Queens: Episode #2.4 (2010) as a guest judge in 2010. In 2012 she served, with Mira Sorvino, Gabrielle Miller, Tamar Simon Hoffs and Lana Morgan, as part of the first all-female jury at the Oldenburg International Film Festival in Germany. The same year Debbie had her directorial debut with the extreme body-horror film Model Hunger (2016). ETonline.com hailed Debbie as one of the "40 Top Scream Queens of the Past 40 Years" in 2018. Debbie's current writing column, Debbie Rochon's Bloody Underground, appears in the Italian published magazine Asylum. Debbie continues to act in feature films, is writing her book and prepares for her sophomore directing project.” IMDB

Humanities is Cultivating Dynamic Relationships in the College of Arts and Sciences
Tumblr media
Universities exist not only to convey knowledge, but also to engender new knowledge through faculty research and creative endeavor. The scholarly, artistic and public accomplishments of faculty in the Humanities at Fairfield are remarkable for a university of our size and scope, and many of them reflect our commitment to undergraduate research and student-faculty collaboration. Here are just a few of our recent highlights:
In September 2018, at Mystic Seaport Museum, the Humanities Institute hosted a weekend-long, public symposium on the cultural, historical and ecological importance of the sea and coastlines in southern New England. The event brought together 10 community organizations with regional and international scholars and local community members. To honor the legacy of the late Professor of Classical Studies Vincent Rosivach, students Alec Lurie and Olivia McEvoy ('19) are producing the "Vincent J Rosivach Register of Slaves in Fairfield, Connecticut (1639-1820)," which Rosivach began during his research into slavery in Fairfield, to be published in the DiMenna-Nyselius library's Digital Commons.
In Classical Studies, Professor Giovanni Ruffini (also of the History department) published the book Life in an Egyptian Village in Late Antiquity: Aphrodito Before and After the Islamic Conquest with Cambridge University Press (2018). In Philosophy, Professor Sara Brill co-edited the book Antiquities Beyond Humanism, forthcoming from Oxford University Press, and was invited to deliver the keynote address for the annual conference of the Ancient Philosophy Society in 2019. Associate Professor Kris Sealey won a $75,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to study the ethics of academic publishing practices, and Associate Professor Toby Svoboda published The Ethics of Climate Engineering: Solar Radiation Management and Non-Ideal Justice with Routledge Press (2017).
In Religious Studies, Professor Paul Lakeland was awarded the “The Best Book in Theology Published in 2017” by the College Theology Society for his book The Wounded Angel: Fiction and the Religious Imagination. Associate Professor Martin Nguyen published Modern Muslim Theology: Engaging God and the World with Faith and Imagination with Rowman & Littlefield (2019) and also received the 2018-19 Wabash Center Peer Mentoring Clusters Grant.  Associate Professor John Slotemaker published the book Anselm of Canterbury and the Search for God (2018) with Lexington Books.
In English, students in Professor Betsy Bowen’s course “Literacy and Language” did collaborative archival research using the Library of Congress’s interviews with the last generation of enslaved Americans. It is part of a multi-year student/faculty project on literacy in which students are analyzing the 2,300 accounts to find information about slave literacy and schooling. Professor Bob Epstein published Chaucer’s Gifts: Exchange and Value in the Canterbury Tales with the University of Wales Press (2018), Associate Professor Johanna Garvey co-edited the book Madness in Black Women’s Diasporic Fictions: Aesthetics of Resistance (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), and Professor Elizabeth Petrino co-edited the book Lydia Sigourney: Critical Essays and Cultural Views (University of Massachusetts Press, 2018). Assistant Professor Matt Tullis published Running With Ghosts: A Memoir of Surviving Childhood Cancer (Sager Group, 2017), Associate Professor Sonya Huber published Pain Woman Takes your Keys, and Other Essays from a Nervous System (University of Nebraska Press 2017), and Professor Carol Ann Davis’s essay collection The Nail in the Tree:  On Art, Violence, and Parenting, is forthcoming from Tupelo Press in 2019. Also of note is that Professor Emily Orlando was named E. Gerald Corrigan Endowed Chair in the Humanities, recognizing her achievements in both scholarship and student mentoring.
In Modern Languages and Literatures, students are combining language majors with other majors and minors to create dynamic courses of study and career tracks. Lauren Jachimczyk (’18) is completing a double major in Chinese Studies and Finance, including a semester in The Beijing Center in China,  and will work as an Analyst in Corporate Investment Banking at Deutsche Bank in NYC after graduation. Sarah Foley (’19), a double major in Spanish and Sociology who studied abroad in Madrid and worked as an interpreter with a community health project co-directed by the Egan School of Nursing and the Spanish program, will work for Oaktree Capital Management after graduation. In an especially exciting project, Spanish/English double major Maggie Smith (’17) has been collaborating for 2 years with Assistant Professor Sergio Adrada-Rafael to produce a new translation of the educational comic The Fate of Numantia: Aius, the slave, which will be published in both Spain and the U.S. Meanwhile, Professor Javier Campos completed a new book, El bailador de tango/ “Tango in Manhattan,” on the history of the Tango in El Río de la Plata. Assistant Professor of the Practice of Italian Sara Diaz co-edited and translated a bilingual edition of 17th century author Margherita Costa’s The Buffoons, A Ridiculous Comedy, published by the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies & Iter Press in 2018. The project includes contributions by student fellows whom Dr. Diaz mentored in the Humanities Institute’s Humanities Seminar. Professor Mary Ann Carolan also received a Tiro a Segno Fellowship at NYU for spring 2019.
In Visual and Performing Arts, Professor Philip Eliasoph is serving as Faculty Consultant and blogger for The New York Times “InEducation” platform; his students join in the process of blogging, engaging in a global conversation about the uses and abuses of our visual landscape. Professor Jo Yarrington’s installation “piecemeal/peacemeal” was invited by the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Guangzhou, China; Professor Katherine Schwab’s exhibition “An Archaeologist’s Eye: The Parthenon Drawings of Katherine A. Schwab” ran from January to May 2018 at The Parthenon in Nashville, TN; and Professor Laura Nashchaired a panel at the first ever interdisciplinary conference on Disco, at the University of Sussex, England. Meanwhile, Assistant Professor Patrick Brooks’ short film “Seen From Above” premiered at the 2018 Vancouver International Film Festival, Suzanne Chamlin had an NG Art Creative Residency in Eygalières, France (May 2018), and Visiting Assistant Professor Meryl O’Connor edited a documentary, Hollow Tree, that was selected as one of the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund and Stories of Change Grantees.
Certainly not least, the Department of History has been on an amazing pace in the production of new research and learning experiences. Assistant Professors Jennifer Adair and Silvia Marsans-Sakly each recently earned a prestigious NEH fellowship, Adair for her groundbreaking research on Argentina's democratization in the 1980s and Marsans-Sakly for her unprecedented study of the Tunisian revolt of 1864. Meanwhile, Professor Gavriel Rosenfeld published The Fourth Reich: The Specter of Nazism from World War II to the Present with prestigious Cambridge University Press (2019) and Associate Professor and chair Patricia Behre worked with the Humanities Institute and the Fairfield University Art Museum to bring to campus a breathtaking public exhibit of artist Robert Hirsch’s Ghosts: French Holocaust Children. And let’s not forget the captain of the ship: Professor and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Richard Greenwald’s book The Death of 9-5: Permanent Freelancers, Empty Offices and the New Way America Works is now under contract with Bloomsbury Press.
Overall, these are exciting and richly rewarding times in the Humanities. We are reaching new thresholds in the knowledge and expression of the human condition by cultivating the dynamic relationship between faculty scholarship, student achievement, and community partnership.

Italian Film Fest Review: 'Sin' humanizes a legend
Italian Film Fest Review: 'Sin' humanizes a legend #VIFFest @VIFFest #IFF2021
Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the worlds great artistic geniuses.  Admired in his own time and now, his skill for sculpture, in particular, is second to none.  Juxtaposed to his skill is how he lived his life, eschewing food and personal hygiene people favour of his work.  Given the stature of the man and the interesting twists his story had, it’s actually surprising that there aren’t more…

MIT Professor Silvio Micali’s Algorand Project Announces Date for First Auction
MIT Professor Silvio Micali‘s Algorand project, via the Algorand Foundation, will hold its first in a series of Dutch Auctions out of Singapore on On June 19th, 2019. These auctions will allow Algos, the native tokens of the Algorand platform, to enter circulation via a mechanism where the market determines the fair price. This inaugural auction also marks the launch of the Algorand network.
The co-inventor of zero-knowledge proofs, Micali is an Italian computer scientist at MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and a professor of computer science in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science since 1983. His research centers on the theory of cryptography and information security. He won the Turing award together with Shafi Goldwasser in 2012 and the Gödel Prize in 1993.
advertisement
The auction also signifies the launch of the Algorand network, which validates the maturation of MIT professor and Turing Award winner Silvio Micali’s vision to create a more robust and efficient blockchain platform that solves the blockchain trilemma and will ultimately transform the underlying technology of our global financial systems.
Algorand’s TestNet has demonstrated the platform’s ability to solve the blockchain trilemma with key milestones including:
Demonstrating decentralization -TestNet has over 500 nodes deployed around the world
Showcasing scalability – In a series of performance tests with 10,000 globally distributed participants, TestNet consistently reaches over 1,000 transactions per second (tps) with five second latency.
Approved Security– Algorand has recently undergone security audits from Trail of Bits and NCC.
Additionally, a number of organizations have been actively engaged with the Algorand platform in its TestNet phase including Top Network, AssetBlock, Otoy Inc. and Syncsort. These organizations are leveraging Algorand to build new solutions for the borderless economy.
The Algorand Foundation believes in the value of the Algorand platform, the Algo, and the potential for everyone to have an opportunity as we enter a new, borderless economy. With a goal of investing in the sustainability and performance of that economy, the foundation has also announced a refund policy for auction participants. Should any participant be dissatisfied with their purchase of Algos, they may return their Algos back to the foundation one-year post-purchase at up to 90 percent of the value paid.
For the first auction, 25 million Algos will be available at a starting price of $10.00 USD and a reserve price of $0.10 USD. The auction will last for 4,000 blocks (about 5 hours), all bids will be posted to and processed from the Algorand blockchain for transparency and Algos will be distributed after the close of the auction. Details from the foundation regarding token dynamics can be found at algorand.foundation/token-dynamics.

These Designers Are Giving Dead Stock a New Lease on Life
When Cate Blanchett re-wore a four-year-old Armani Privé gown to the Cannes Film Festival this past May, she made a strong statement about clothing waste, saying, “It seems wilful and ridiculous that such garments are not cherished and re-worn for a lifetime.” It’s a pragmatic attitude that resourceful designers are taking to the next level with upcycled clothing, where a second-hand item is remixed and reimagined into something new. With an eye on sustainability, designers and consumers alike are rejecting the idea that the lifespan of a well-made garment needs to be dictated by trends.

Environmentally friendly as well as business savvy (73 per cent of millennials say they are willing to pay more for sustainable goods, and vintage pieces are highly covetable in their own right), this what’s-old-is-new approach has been adopted by buzzy brands around the world. At Zurich-based Vetements, founder Demna Gvasalia fashions new pieces from old Levi’s and vintage fur. Italian fashion house Missoni recently created a limited-edition collection of 25 pieces from upcycled fabric, while Dutch couturiers Viktor & Rolf have repurposed vintage gowns into their fanciful new creations—their last two collections were made using only vintage dead-stock fabrics. Known for making the majority of its cool-girl dresses with sustainable fabric, Los Angeles-based Reformation repurposes vintage pieces for about 2 to 5 per cent of its collections. The brand claims that remanufactured clothing can save close to 6,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

In Canada, Antonio Tadrissi’s Toronto-based fashion label Dust of Gods was the answer to the all-too-common dilemma of having too many clothes in his closet. Rather than get rid of them, he tapped his artist friend and now business partner Anthony Ricciardi to put a contemporary spin on his beloved pieces. Trained as an architect, Tadrissi has since expanded his sourcing to army surplus stores and markets like Notting Hill’s in London, England. He’ll scour denim jackets and military coats that he transforms with custom patches, tapestries, paint and other embellishments like photos of notorious celebrities and handwritten messages. “I like to see things, break them, put them back together and make them something else,” Tadrissi says of his design process. “Unlike for houses, where a pattern is made and followed, it just happens—on the go.”
At Triarchy’s headquarters in Los Angeles, creative director Adam Taubenfligel designs the brand’s Atelier Denim collection entirely from repurposed jeans he finds at vintage suppliers. He says that a long lifespan is in denim’s DNA. “It’s a workwear fabric—that’s what it is. It’s meant to be durable; it’s meant to last forever.” The one-of-a-kind pieces in the Atelier Denim collection are made of fabric that’s typically 20 or 30 years old, and the results are emblematic of the Triarchy ethos: to make fewer, better things.

In Mariouche Gagné’s case, the fabric of choice is fur. Gagné estimates she’s rescued about 100,000 fur coats since founding her label, Harricana by Mariouche, in 1993. “Fur is probably the best to recycle because it lasts for almost 200 years if it’s well kept,” she explains, adding that a 1950s full-length mink coat can easily be transformed into something more suitable for 21st-century living. It’s proof that in some cases, the right garment can be cherished and re-worn for several lifetimes.

Next generation sustainable fashion: Zero Waste Daniel
Some might remember ZWD’s scrap-fabric rendering of David Bowie. New York-based Daniel Silverstein is a trash-free advocate of sorts who uses factory scraps to create intricate patchwork joggers and hoodies. One piece from a ZWD collection diverts roughly half a kilogram of fabric from a landfill.
