My Relationship With Nature - Blog 1

Reflecting back on my past relationship with nature I don’t think it has ever been as strong as it is presently. At least I took it for granted. I was fortunate enough to be born into a family in which traveling is adored and discovering new parts of the world is desired in which they haven’t seen yet, nor my brother and I have; whether it be an hour car drive from where we live, a hike, a road trip or a plane ride. As my parents were born and raised in two different yet very similar European countries; Poland and Ukraine, they believe traveling allows us to explore new places, and find the extraordinary hidden gems Earth has to offer. A lifetime goal my parents have always held since being little kids was to constantly provide me and my brother with new, eye opening experiences to evolve our desires, wants and needs as individuals by seeking adventures and growing our knowledge by showing us and making us be surrounded by different parts of nature. I can understand this now, as it has allowed me to develop a big connection with nature and all that it has to offer, such that if I was unable to travel outside of my living suburbs, I do not believe I would be this connected with or impacted strongly by nature.

Being outdoors, whether surrounded by palm trees, a forest, an island, a lake/ocean or even mountains, has brought an escape from the stressors I face in my life and has made my bad days good, and my good days even better. When I am surrounded by all different sorts of nature, it has brought nothing but positive feelings, emotions, and experiences into my life. I'm starting to wonder if it could ever have a negative impact on my life? The different sceneries, textures, smells, climates, organisms, and people nature has to offer completely compels and takes away any negatives I am facing or hold, and replenishes my mind and body with positives. I believe it is unlimited.

So far during my journey of life, it has led me to experience touristing across Europe, to down south tropical vacations, weekend cottage vacations, and across other parts of the world as my Dad does a lot of business traveling. I have been able to value my happily filled broad experiences and thoroughly understand how nature enhances my life entirely. Overlooking my past and present experiences with nature, every different environment in which I have been surrounded by nature has provided a different feeling and impact on my life.

Here are some examples:

Gondola in Banff, Alberta - timid, yet excited and confident to ski down my first mountain.

Lake Halliburton, Ontario - calm, yet interested in what organisms live within this big forest.

Vakarufalhi, Maldives - serenity, zen, and grateful to be experiencing such a unique island. A lot of time for reflection.

Phuket, Thailand - mesmerized, curious to learn more about these wild monkeys as for other animals that live abundantly across the island.

Overlooking some of these experiences and interactions I have faced offer a “sense of place” in which I can say is definitely my parents. Without their teachings, admirations, and determination to guide my brother and I to love experiencing adventures in nature, I would not have such a strong connection with it. As a university student, living on my own away from home, if I ever feel homesick, one way to cure it is to indulge in nature. My parents have shown me that there is more to life than in the suburbs. Nature being one of them.
