#Until then he will lie awake at night. Haunted by this inadequacy. He's just like me for real (chronic perfectionist).

Chapter 13
Xi? Are you up?
Roman was curled around his phone on the bed. He ended up not being able to fall asleep and he wasn't sure what to do to ease his mind so he was hoping his friend could help him. Wandering around the house didn't seem like the best idea since this wasn't his home. He was only staying here until he either was forced to leave or was able to find his own place. Virgil may have invited him to stay, but he had no idea how the emo's parents would feel about him being here.
something wrong Ci?
Just can't sleep.
any reasons why?
Roman stared at his phone. What was he supposed to tell his friend? That he hadn't been able to text him much because of needing to make money to provide for himself? That his family had moved away without him and now he was staying with a classmate? He sighed, turning his gaze to the ceiling. Staying with an attractive classmate. Was it wrong that he kind of liked Anxiety and Virgil? He couldn't say anything about what was going on. He wasn't sure how Xi would react and he didn't want to worry him so close to their meet up.
Just thinking about how we have less than a week until the Masquerade.
...are you nervous
Me? Nervous to meet you? Are you?
Of course Virgil was. He had tried his suit on multiple times after getting it to make sure it was perfect. Everything needed to be perfect for meeting Princey. His make up, his mask, his mood. He would have broken down on multiple occasions if Patton hadn't assured him he looked amazing in his whole outfit with and without the mask. He needed to make a good impression on his online crush.
of course not Princey
Not even slightly?
maybe a little...
I may actually be a little as well. But don't worry too much about it, Xi. I am sure it will be almost like seeing an old friend after a long time apart.
you're probably right
thanks Ci
Sweet dreams Xi. <3 Ci
sweet dreams <3 Xi
Roman put his phone down on the bed side table. He wasn't actually planning on falling asleep just yet. He didn't know how differently Virgil and Logan were going to treat him after learning of his situation. He didn't want anything to be different tomorrow. He didn't want them to treat him like a ticking time bomb where he could explode into an emotional wreck at any moment. Roman was okay. He really was. So what if his parents didn't want him anymore? Or that he'd probably never get to see Richard or Raylen or Rodrique or Rylee or Rosalyn. It wasn't like he hadn't lost family before.
Roman closed his eyes, bunching his blanket in his hands. He could see his face. They had been so young. They'd both been told to stop messing around, but why would they have had any reason to listen? Maybe his brother would've grown up to be less of a disappointment than he was. Maybe he wouldn't have been disowned like Roman was. Or gay, gross or freaky. Maybe Paris was right. His Father too. Maybe-
"Kiddo?"
Roman opened his eyes. They widened after taking a second to take in what was in front of him. A boy who looked to be maybe a few years younger than him had his hands up next to Roman's face and he seemed to almost be… floating.
Roman let out a scream as he fell out of bed, finding the first thing he could find and pointing it at Patton. "Stay back you… you… Whatever you are!"
"Shh." Patton held up his hands in an attempt to calm Roman down. "You're sure pointing a lot of shade at me there, Kiddo." He chuckled at his own pun about the lamp Roman had grabbed to defend himself with and then winced when he heard Virgil rushing down the stairs to the attic.
Virgil burst through the door, holding one of his guitars up as a weapon. He glanced between the glasses on Roman's face and Patton, lowering the guitar. He held a hand to his heart. "What the heck are you doing, Patton?!"
"He looked sad and I really wanted to help and give him a hug and-"
"What in the name of Julie Andrews are you?!" Roman interrupted, keeping his distance from Patton and then looking to Virgil. "What is he?"
"The glass-says it all, doesn't it, Kiddo?" Patton giggled, hovering over the floor.
"No, it really does not say anything about-" Roman pulled off the glasses, blinking when Patton had disappeared along with the glasses in his hand. He pushed them back onto his face. "Is this something I have concocted in some strange dream?" He turned to Virgil. "Wait but shouldn't I be saving you from the danger instead of the other way around?"
"Am I usually the damsel in distress in your dreams, Prince?" Virgil shook his head, moving over to Roman and helping him up. "No. This is real. That is Patton. He's a ghost and for some reason he can only be seen with his glasses."
"I've tried taking them off before but another pair stays in its place." Patton joked, pulling Roman into a hug.
Roman flinched at the initial cold that hit him when Patton had pulled him in. He hesitantly put the lamp back down, hugging him back. He let out a chuckle, still in shock and disbelief. "This feels so incredibly real that I'm not even sure I'm going to believe I'm actually awake when I wake up."
Virgil rolled his eyes, pinching Roman's arm.
"Ow..." Roman whined, stepping away from Patton to rub his arm. "That hurt."
"Good." Virgil leaned his guitar against the wall by the door, standing beside it.
"It wasn't supposed to hurt though."
"Usually when someone pinches someone else it is."
Roman slowly turned his attention back to Patton. He lunged for the lamp again, swiftly unplugging it with a rough tug and rushing to block Patton's path to Virgil. "Stay back you demon!"
Patton flinched. "Woah there, Kiddo. That's quite a jump away from a ghost don't you think?" He glanced at Virgil unsurely.
Virgil grabbed the lamp from behind Roman, trying to take it away from him. "He's not here to hurt us. Let go of the lamp, Prince." He grunted.
Roman shook his head. "Then why is he haunting you?! Why is he here? All ghosts have a purpose in being!"
"He's not haunting me!" Virgil looked to Patton with a quiet sincerity before continuing. "He's my friend. Now stop painting him up to be some kind of monster."
Roman stopped, letting go of the lamp after a moment. "Your… friend?"
Virgil let out a sigh of relief, staying as he was in case Roman tried anything again. "My friend." He nodded.
"...Before or af-"
"Before."
Patton took an uncertain step towards the two, watching Roman in case he got spooked again. "I'm sorry for scaring you. Is it okay if I give you another hug now?"
"I wasn't scared. I was just-" Roman dropped the act when he saw Patton could see right through that lie, nodding at the little flick to his arm Virgil gave him. "It's alright I don't think you meant to." He took a minute to get a better look at Patton. "If the whole soft dad get up is in any way an accurate depiction of your personality, the worst you could probably do is bury me alive in dad jokes."
"You betcha, Kiddo." Patton chuckled, he held his arms open to repeat his last question. "I promise no more surprises tonight. I'm all boo-ed out."
Roman gave him a light smile back. He was about to take a step forward when he realized Virgil was still holding the lamp in front of him. "Uh, Virgil?"
"Yeah?"
"Did you want to join in on that hug action?"
Virgil took a confused second and then quickly let go of one of his hands on the lamp, scrambling backwards into the wall with a curse. "I'm going back to sleep. Next time don't scream bloody murder unless you're actually being murdered." He muttered, closing the door behind him and reopening it to switch the lamp for the guitar.
Patton chuckled, wrapping his arms around Roman. "Are you really alright, Kiddo?"
"Well if Virgil of all people isn't afraid of you I don't see how I should be." Roman held Patton back.
"He's had time. You should have seen his reaction to seeing me again." Patton laughed, moving to sit on the bed.
Roman settled onto his bed as well, giving Patton his attention with a smirk. "Did he freak out?"
Patton nodded. "He did."
"You have to tell me all about it now."
"Okay, Kiddo. But after that you're going to bed."
~
Virgil fell forward onto his bed with a groan, turning over when he heard muffled laughing coming from downstairs. It sounded like Roman and Patton were getting along well. He sighed, picking up his phone.
It was strange hearing another voice in the house. He was so used to it just being him and Patton. He'd usually stay up talking with Patton on nights he couldn't sleep. It didn't feel right not to have Patton here with him to make sure he got some rest. This felt kinda… lonely. Like how it felt after the funeral without a friend who could actually be with him in person to comfort him. A friend who would've been Patton if it hadn't been his… Was it wrong for him to be jealous knowing Patton wasn't just his friend anymore? That he was going to spend less time with him to spend time with Roman and Logan now? Patton had seemed to have a renewed excitement when they had decided on making new friends. Was that because he was getting bored of Virgil?
Virgil took off the glasses, laying them on his bedside table, staring at them for a while. Maybe it wasn't jealousy. Maybe it was just fear that he could be left behind. That Patton would end up only wanting to spend time with Roman and Logan and that he'd be left on his own again. Left on his own like he always was.
Chapter 14
Sorry, it's been a minute. This chapter has been almost done for a while now but I just wasn't certain about the ending and I feel better with where it's at now. I promise that things are going to be lightening up quickly and who knows maybe the next chapter might be one we've all been waiting for for a long while now. I'm not sure yet I have to start writing the next chapter to be sure. Thanks for being patient and I hope you enjoyed the chapter. I'll be posting a few different fics over this week so keep an eye out for those if you'd like to see more fics by me.
