About looking. There is something ephemeral about looking into a chimpanzees eyes. Such a close relative and yet so distant. In Uganda the conflict between chimpanzee and human has been increasing over the last years. Reason for this is human encroachment into chimp territory. This means that sometimes these animals attack humans because they feel threatened and indeed they are. Humans in turn then get traumatised and afraid which makes them despise their close relatives. It is hence important to sensitise people through education and decrease the conflict through management of human and chimpanzee behaviour. Tourism plays a major role in reaching these goals. Murchison Falls National Park - Uganda park at Glance
Murchison Falls National Park was first gazetted as a game reserve in 1926 though established in 1952 and is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The park lies at the northern end of the Albertine rift valley and It is in north-western Uganda, spreading inland from the shores of Lake Albert, around the Victoria Nile, up to the Karuma Falls. It is Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, hosting 76 species of mammals and 451 birds.
The explorers John Speke and James Grant were the first Europeans to visit the present day Murchison Falls National Park in 1862. It was more thoroughly explored by Sir Samuel Baker and wife Florence Baker in 1863-1864. Sir. Samuel Baker named the falls Murchison Falls after the geologist Roderick Murchison, then the president of the Royal Geographical Society.
The park is subjugated by woodland, wetland, savannah as well as tropical forest that is well known to be a habitant for over 76 mammal species and over 450 different bird species. Among the big mammals include hippo, Rothschild’s giraffe, warthog, cape buffalo, Uganda kob, hartebeest and elephants. The Nile corridor of the Murchison has a big collection of water birds such as rare shoebill stork and also has a large concentration of Nile crocodile. Kaniyo Pabidi forest is a home to primates, chimpanzees and over 360 species of different birds.
Attractions in Murchison Falls National Park:
Presently the spotlight of a visit to Murchison is the launch trip up the stream to observe the Falls and riverbank wildlife that happens twice every day both morning and afternoon. The round trip takes 3 hrs. Another boat trip goes downstream from Paraa down to the papyrus delta at the point where the river enters into Lake Albert. This 4-5 hour return adventure provides a good chance of discovering the shoebill stork and different varieties of Uganda safari wildlife. Fishing is prohibited to designated sites & places are limited so advance booking is recommended. A number of boats could be hired for sport fishing by prior booking.
The most spectacular view of the waterfall is on the top of “where the sight & sound of the Nile crashing through”, wide chasm makes a memorable assault on the senses site -can be reached either by car / a 30 minutes’ climb, leaving the Paraa launch.
Trails through Kaniyo Pabidi forest for 8 kilometers inside Kichumbar Gate, offer the opportunity to track chimpanzee and primates below Uganda’s largest left mahogany. Birdwatching is excellent with the opportunity of sighting rarities like the yellow-footed flycatcher. Nature walks are as well offered up at Rabongo forest.
Accommodation in Murchison Falls National Park:
Accommodation ranges from campsites, lodges, hotels and guesthouse. Some of these are built on top of the falls. They have better facilities that are eco-friendly. Budget accommodation is also available for the budget travelers and the most suitable places include Kaniyo Pabidi Camp and Red Chili Rest Camp. Tourists that love up market accommodation include Nile safari camp, Paraa safari lodges as well as Sambiya river. In case you want to stop in Masindi, there is luxury accommodation such as Masindi Hotel along with Court view hotels that have excellent services.
How to get there:
By means of road, it takes around 5hours from Kampala with about 305 km. Paara covers a distance of about 85km from Masindi town by the shortest route.
A direct or longer route will cover an area of about 135km. Alternatively one may decide to take on the Budongo forest route that will provide magnificent views overlooking Lake Albert from the direct position of the rift valley escarpment over Butiaba.
You can also access Paara from the north through Chobe Gate, Karuma Falls along with Tangi. The Gate that is close to Pakwach covers an area of about 25km2 to paara in addition to Wankwar Gate close to Purongo.
People with Vehicles or public means will definitely go through the Nile at paara. Besides road, Murchison can be accessed by air. Pakuba is the landing site for the charter flights and this takes about 19kms from paraa and Bugungu covers an area of 13kms from Paraa.

Mountain Gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda

Daily sleep: about 12 hours
Scientific name: Gorilla beringei beringei
As their name implies, mountain gorillas live in forests high in the mountains, at elevations of 8,000 to 13,000 feet. They have thicker fur, and more of it, compared to other great apes. The fur helps them to survive in a habitat where temperatures often drop below freezing.
They can eat all day long. Mountain gorillas spend about a quarter of their day eating, mainly plants. Around 85% of their diet is made up of leaves, shoots and stems, but gorillas can also eat larvae, snails, ants, and even roots, barks and rotting wood (a good source of sodium/salt).
The only significant natural predator of the mountain gorilla is the leopard. The main threat that mountain gorillas face is from humans. Humans hunt gorillas for meat, just as a natural predator would.
Humans are pushing mountain gorillas out of the wild and into extinction. The biggest threats to this once critically endangered great ape's survival come from political instability, human encroachment, and forest degradation.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place where you can track rhinos on foot in Uganda; it is really great and exciting as you watch the white rhinoceros! This place has a tight 24-hour security, after the actions done in the 90’s.The sanctuary has around 78 amazing trained and skilled park rangers; it works hand in hand with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Ziwa Ranchers Limited. It started with 6 rhinos but currently the number has grown to about twenty two (22) Southern white Rhinos. Apart from rhinos, Ziwa is also home to a number of bird species, reptiles, and 40 mammal species including antelopes, crocodiles, hippos, monkeys among others.
