Everyone jokes about Rinzler’s “purr” and cat coding, even me. However the more I sit and think about him the more he reads to me as a abused dog.
Tumblr media
The transformation from a Watch dog to a attack dog is a horrifying one. A watch dog may have a responsibility to watch the house(system) but still has time off duty and people who love him. A attack dog does not participate in society, there is not a moment they aren’t on alert , aren’t looking to attack or kill because that’s simply all they know.
Going from Tron to Rinzler would’ve seen his metaphorical floppy ears and tails cropped, his spirit/resolve broken, harmed for disobedience etc. Yes it was repurposing but it takes a lot more than just some coding to make a reactive killing machine. All he does is wait until Clu goes “bite” and then he gets his opponent.
It’s so fascinating and so unbelievably tragic, and I think that’s why I love him so much as a concept. For some reason as a child I always loved the concept of mind control- turning so evil against your will - doing some horrible things but eventually being able to pull through and be yourself in the end. I don’t know why but I’ve always loved this storytelling device so much… I guess I was edgy as hell as a child.
I’m so mad that they have done this as it’s such a great concept but they do virtually nothing with Rinzler- it feels to me anyway that it was more of just a method to “get Tron out of the way” without completely killing the character from the start.
And it’s a shame because there’s SO much you can do with him? There’s that idea there that he is constantly at odds with the new programing fighting it every single second and loosing because there’s always ultimately another command. Another fight. There’s not enough time granted to him for it but he tries. His throats ruined- he growls constantly - give me that tragedy I just know that he’s dripping with! Give me that abused attack dog metaphor!
Instead of “oh! No! Reveal time… whoops he’s dead” (not in the sea but he’s like RIGHT in the direct blast radius and I’m still mad)

Subroutine and all its related stories are no longer available on Archive of Our Own. I will not passively or actively support the website's Zionist leanings on top of denying the active genocide (by calling those declarations a "antisemitic trope") going on in occupied Palestine.
I'd say that was a tough choice, but honestly?
Tumblr media
I'm glad to be away from that cesspool.
I urge anyone to withhold monetary or publication support from the OTW/AO3. Name and shame them, because they've already done a bang up job of suppressing their actions, and uncritical AO3 supporters are complicit in helping them do that.
Remember to:
Listen to and amplify the voices of Palestinians on the ground (wizard_bisan1, motaz_azaiza, ismail.jood) or in the diaspora (iamsbeih, anat_international, byplestia).
Read about the history and culture of Palestine.
Support LGBT+ Palestinian voices pushing against US and Zionist peddling of Pinkwashing, Islamophobia, and anti-Arab stereotypes (of pre/post-9/11 xenophobia that allowed them to invade the Middle East and destroy millions of lives)
Boycott, Divest, and Sanction all parties and actors (lit., actors) involved with the genocide of Palestine, it's people, land, history, and culture. Yes, that means local, non-profits, or non-corps offering sympathy or monetary support of the Zionist movement and all forms of military or government bodies here in the states or abroad.
Do your research: visit the Palestine Archive, Palestine Academy, Decolonize Palestine.
Support organizations like Jewish Voices For Peace and Students for Justice for Palestine.
Call your representatives and demand they vote no on the numerous anti-Arab/Palestine bills or resolutions Zionist organizations such as the ADL and AIPAC are trying to push through. Keep calling them, make yourself a nuisance to these people.
Look into projects like Open Secrets, Olive Grove, Vote Socialist 2024, and in general, become more involved in your community and general elections. Look into what unions like United Auto Workers (UAW) and [Iowa City] Starbucks Workers United (SWU) are doing with regards to Palestine.
Look into supporting Unions working toward a General Strike.
Support anti-Zionist Jewish voices (sexualityscholar). They're gonna be your best source on why you shouldn't support a white nationalist movement that's, in part, responsible for the spikes in Islamophobia and antisemitism across the world.
Support Pro-Palestine content creators (realgodivagoddess, jupiterbaal, blacademics) trying to raise awareness about the genocide going on right now, but avoid grifters like Shaun King (aka, Talcum X/Yasser Arafraud).
Support news publications like Aljazeera or Jewish Currents who are covering the ongoing genocide and pushing back against disinformation and misinformation peddled by ADL and AIPAC.
Avoid Zionist websites like Facts for Peace and Jewbelong (dot org). - Honestly, start using adblockers to avoid being blasted by Zionist ads on YouTube, and etc.
Download the No Thanks app, and use bdnaash to avoid Pro-Zionist brands.
Be wary of/avoid Washington Post/Times, LA Times, BBC, Sky News, the Guardian, ABC News, WBAL CH11, JZ13, CNN, Fox News (srsly), or any other legacy news org. They are actively aiding in the misinformation and disinformation campaign against the Palestinians, and have fired news anchors or journalists questioning the Zionist agenda.
Watch Israelism, Tantura, and Palestinian cinema/films (GQME, PC).
Read the Goldstone Report, IMEU article on broken ceasefires, amnesty internationals report of illegal settlements in Palestine
Look into ongoing genocides or destabilization efforts in Haiti (bertrhude, flowerboyserge), Sudan (bsonblast), Lebanon (meriam awada), Syria (AJ), the Democratic Republic of Congo (sincerelysparrow), Yemen (AJ), etc., going across the Global South. Look at who the common actors are, who benefits from this chaos.
Archive and save all information about this current genocide and cultural history of Palestine. Because they will be trying to rewrite the story, and are doing it as we speak.
There are some just a few of the things you can do to support Palestine and support your own liberation from systems that have brought most of to the brink of poverty, zero job security, lack of proper healthcare, the destruction of our education system, erosion of free speech, and houselessness.
Happy New Year.

"so what is this headcanon about Tron 1982 being all in Kevin Flynn's imagination"
"eh, it's a theory that the programs in there were just normal programs, he just projected onto them and saw them as people."
"So he wasn't actually digitized in there by the MCP then? He just hacked into the computer the usual way, but fantasized the whole time about being inside the computer and the programs being alive?"
"No, no, the theory is that the MCP WAS actually intelligent and did digitize him in there, but he projected humanity onto the programs because a human mind in there would have to project something in order to make any sense of it."
"hmm"
"BUT, that theory isn't perfect. It has some inconsistencies when you look at other works like Legacy, Uprising, the videogames… Like, if he made the Grid in Legacy based on what he experienced in 82, but that wasn't real, then..."
"wait who's saying he made the Grid in Legacy? why would the headcanon say that was real if Tron 82 wasn't? maybe he just imagined all THAT stuff too."
"…"
"maybe it was ALL in his imagination. maybe none of it happened-- not Legacy, not Uprising, not the games, not meeting programs in the ENCOM system, not even getting digitized in there"
"….."
"maybe all of his life that we saw was imagined. Maybe he never worked at ENCOM. Maybe he never worked in the arcade. Maybe he wasn't really even named Kevin Flynn. Maybe that was all in his imagined fantasy too."
"……….."
"maybe he was actually named Steven Lisberger"
"…congrats. you have just discovered how fiction works"

The thing about comparing Kipperlilly's grudge to hating DEI and affirmative action is that those things are exactly what she's advocating for. The Bad Kids are not receiving accommodation for anything - and in fact Aguefort seems like the type to despise things like accommodations and would tell disabled people to pick themselves up by their bootstraps, but I digress -rather, they have direct connections to massive save-the-world plots three years in a row now that puts them way ahead of everyone else. Though they put in hard work, that doesn't change the fact that no one else working as hard as they can will ever equal being told to go stop a god from coming back and coincidentally your dad (a) worked directly with that dead god's primary agent in the past and (b) is now a super cool angel secret agent who will directly assist you in the task. Oh, and also, your teammate's parents are the dead god's primary mortal agents. And also they kidnapped your other teammate's dad because he's a powerful demon lord so now she's involved too. And you all happen to end up on Leviathan, where Fabian is an instant celebrity who immediately gets a cult worshiping the planks he walks on because they all work for his rich undead infernal dad.
The issue is that people keep mapping it to the real world and seeing "tragic backstory" like it would be IRL, which is a mistake. It's not a disability. They don't go to normal school to become accountants or NASA engineers, they are there to be doing exactly that shit that their backstories rope them into. Like, this isn't Buffy, they aren't saving the world incidentally, this is school for saving the world to pursue a career in saving the world. Spyre functions so differently from IRL that everyone is dramatically failing to comprehend the actual situation everyone is in.
And the thing about hating affirmative action is that it presumes someone only got into whatever not because they have skill, but because of their race or something like that. That's manifestly different from what's going on here. Kipperlilly has no doubt the Bad Kids are incredibly powerful and skilled - but their backstories gave them opportunities to use that power and skill that no one else will ever have regardless of effort or even luck. The Bad Kids can't go five seconds without tripping over the revelation that the BBEG for the year is one of their second cousins. That just doesn't happen to other people, period. The world revolves around the BK's in ways it will never revolve around anyone else so the Bad Kids will always get the massive adventures to save the world and be the top of their class because they're personally connected to the narrative.
Remember, Brennan has confirmed that other AA students do not do shit like that. They do exactly the sort of missions you'd expect them to - go in dungeon, fight monsters, come back. It's not "uh, the Rat Grinders should have just gone out and saved the world too", that's not how it works. AA students are not usually expected to, their rat grinding is just a more tedious and efficient version of what they would be doing otherwise. The BK's don't get involved with these plots simply because they're the most heroic heroes ever who seek wrongs to right, they do it because every single time everyone but Gorgug (who is for the most part absent major narrative stakes) was born someone that would get those in's, feats reproducible by no one else.
"Ah, but the Seven-"
The Seven prove the tragedy of it. Because Kipperlilly is right, but she's also wrong. The brilliance of BLeeM this season is that he's crafted a narrative inseparable from the meta of how the game works. In a very real way this is like the Dungeons & Dragons versions of Tron. The fact that it's a series of fictional TTRPG sessions is essential to the universe and it's story, in a Twin Peaks-ian way.
Because, see, it's not actually, technically magical trauma that gives out those narrative advantages. Magical trauma is just the most obviously visible side-effect. What the issue actually is is that, as everyone has noted over and over again, the Rat Grinders are NPCs, and it is therefore impossible for the world to ever bend itself around them the way it does for the PCs. Except, most are just saying that as a funny haha joke.
No, like, literally, that's the issue. They will always be in the shadow of the handful of people that the people constructing their world, their timeline, their very existence, has decided matter. They are doomed by narrative causality to be "boring". And I'm going to take a moment to say here, isn't it crazy no one is talking about this when we just got done with Neverafter which was all about this exact thing????? Like, literally the BBEG was the Authors. That is the situation here, more or less.
Anyway, there will never be a demon attacking that due to a curse is only vulnerable to hot licks from Ruben's guitar passed down from the first gnomish rocker. Mary Ann will never be the prophesized liberator of kobolds enslaved in dragon dens. Ivy will never find out her father was secretly a super-soldier for the Council of Chosen who before he was assassinated left her notes detailing a sinister plot within the government of Solace.
People keep having a hard time with this because it intuitively doesn't feel right to ever classify something like losing a father in any context to have some kind of bright side. But if you take nothing else away from this post, let it be this: Adventuring as it's done in Spyre is not something done in the real world. Adventuring is something everyone chose to go to AA to learn and put into practice as their long-term career. And in that, absolutely these things give the PCs a completely one hundred percent insurmountable leg-up on the thing they're all in competition for.
And it being completely insurmountable in that way further goes to show the difference between hating that situation and hating affirmative action. Even AA is not a guarantee that a specific member of the majority will lose out on something and a specific member of the minority will get it instead. As soon as the character sheets were rolled everyone else at Aguefort may as well have just gone home and started studying to be accountants because the main characters had been chosen. Or they could keep going and hope they get a spin-off, I guess.
But Kipperlilly does keep trying, for she doesn't really comprehend the true eldritch horror beyond her existence shackled to the bits of a bunch of comedians, and her solution is to adjust for those unfair advantages.
Which is affirmative action.
How is that not obvious.

im thinking about how Tron and Beck handle being Tron based on their directives
like, in 1982, Alan tells Dillinger that Tron's function is to monitor traffic between the Encom servers and other servers, and shut down anything illegal. So that's what Tron does- he analyzes system activity and shuts down the stuff that isn't allowed, mostly by derezzing programs directly
Beck is a mechanic, which we don't have a whole lot of background for, but he seems to try and repair the problem instead. He never derezzes a program (as far as I can remember) and always tries to convince people to turn from Clu or not to kill each other. Even with Tron, knowing full well that Tron is much stronger than him, he goes to talking him down first.
just interesting

The Admin and the old man
Tumblr media
Can you imagine what it felt like? After wanting nothing but to face Flynn again, to scream at him, to yell and kick and scream and cry— this is a man you thought of for cycles wanting to destroy him— wanting to ask him, why? You finally face him after thousands of cycles it’s happening and… he’s old.
Clu is faced with this remorseful old man. He looks so impossibly tired, so weak and sad that it practically breaks him. Then Flynn opens his mouth and starts to apologize, the anger becomes confused and it lessens— he’s sorry. But he can’t even apologize right. He makes the effort and he still fails— in fact he essentially calls clu a mistake to his face and makes it about himself then a full apology- he sees clu as his mistake but not his own program. can you fucking imagine that mix of emotions ? Seeing this sad old man in-front of you who can’t possibly be the same man you’ve been harboring all this hate for. But you’ve known nothing but anger and confusion for most of your runtime, what else is there to feel? Then he apologizes… but he’s not… then he’s doing everything in his power to stop you for some stranger— a son. Is that not what you are? The two of you were supposed to build the perfect system (same team? We’re always on the same team.) doesn’t he see this is all you have left- escape is the only way out? No he’s never seen- the anger returns.
Anyways… thinking about how the concept of Aging and children being non existant to programs (there is old programs but it is not a fast process. You’d need to be ancient) and how that plays into the final fight with Clu. How Flynn is so close but so far to understanding where he had messed up, how Clu is in a way the forgotten son.
The absolute desperation of Clu’s face to reach the portal for some mythical better place. It becomes so clear in that moment it was never about domination or control, and it hits me almost as hard as when Sam and Flynn reunite.

tron’s inclusion in kingdom hearts unintentionally aged into a meta depiction of the 2.0 and legacy timelines, and i love it!
nomura has said in an interview that space paranoids was included in kh2 (2005) bc of a disney meeting where he saw development for 2.0 (2003) and thus wanted to give the series representation; this is why sora, his friends, and the light cycle’s designs are based on 2.0 (the only canon tron sequel at the time), and where this tron says he’s a clone:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
meanwhile later on after legacy (2010) was released, this is reflected in sora meeting the “original” tron/rinzler in the grid for kh3d (2012); even though these trons are separate beings given the clone thing, there’s something really sweet w kh’s messages about love, hearts, and bonds that harkens back to the whimsical fantasy vibes 1982 had:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TLDR; kh2 (2005) including tron because of 2.0 and calling him a clone accidentally became a meta depiction of the tron franchise’s timeline split since the later kh3d (2012) game depicts the legacy timeline with their version of tron/rinzler... i really implore anyone who’s a fan of one franchise to check out the other, it’s really neat :’0

Hi, they ask you in you asks quite often and cant find an answer everybody agrees from the internet, what would you call "meta"? like what does it means i hace no idea? is it like fanfiction? or what is the difference ? what does it entails??
Hi! <3
(quick disclaimer that i'm not greek and i'm operating on latin and terminology classes, so if any greek speaking people spot an error, please do correct it!)
The word "meta" itself is a greek prefix and in this context roughly translates to "above". If you talk about the meta-level of something, then it refers to the level above the current one.
To give another example, let's have a look at the name "Metatron". You can divide the name into "meta" and "tron". We already know that "meta" often means above, and the suffix "tron" tends to denote an instrument of some sort, like cyclotron, which is a particle accelerator. So the Metatron is an instrument (used by God) that is above the other beings in heaven.
In fandom context specifically, meta-discourse, or meta for short, is an umbrella term for any discussions that talk about the show from an outside perspective.
When you write fanfiction, you are on the same level as the good omens show itself. You're analyzing stuff from for example Crowley's perspective, so you are limited to the knowledge Crowley has and how he thinks about things. You are in the world.
If you write a meta post, you are discussing the show and the world itself. When I analyze Crowley's actions I am not operating based on what he knows but on what we as the audience know. I am above the show/world and using my own thoughts and opinions.
I hope this answered your question, if not don't hesitate to ask more questions!

BRACKET REVEAL
Alright. At long last, I present to you the bracket...or should I say...*BRACKETS* for the Virtual Character Tournament!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Given the scale, the first round is going to be one bracket per week, 4 a day, with each lasting 24 hours. I know that this is still tight, but given how many contestants there are, along with the necessary inclusions of images and propaganda (oh and I guess also my job), it's what I can do to keep this semi-manageable. There's also no redemption round this time. It's gonna be a single elimination tournament. Be kind to your peers. This is not but a drop in the infinite ocean of the internet.
...oh yeah the brackets themselves. We'll be going in order over the course of 4 weeks. I'll make proper announcements for them as they commence. Given how many there are and what I want to get done beforehand, Bracket 1 will likely begin some time this week. But for the matchups...

I'll Become Your Sword and the Shield to Protect You!: An Aztecshipping Manifesto
Happy III day! I wrote up an entire meta post explaining Aztecshipping and why it's good!
(Also available on Ao3 here)
Tumblr media
The Basics
Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal is one of multiple spinoffs of the Yu-Gi-Oh anime series, produced by Studio Gallop from April 2011 to March 2014. The main character, one Yuma Tsukumo, is a thirteen year old boy who breaks from series tradition by starting the series with very, very little knowledge of how to play the central card game (Yugi, Yami Yugi, Judai, and Yusei all knew how at the start of their respective series), but ends up going through massive character growth to become able to more than hold his own through his interactions with the main cast and his teamwork with the amnesiac alien Astral. Basically, Yuma is a very determined guy who refuses to ever give up or admit defeat, pushes on with his special catchphrase 'kattobingu', but at the same time still misses his missing adventurer parents dearly, to the point of choosing to sleep on a hammock in the attic where the artifacts collected through their adventures are stored. His relationship with his older sister Akari is a bit rocky due to her barring Yuma from playing Duel Monsters at the start of the series, but it's clear they (and their grandmother/guardian Haru) do care about each other.
Once you get past the shock of the Zexal protagonist being a highly energetic but unskilled Duelist of a thirteen year old (especially if you choose to start Zexal right after finishing the previous spinoff Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds), he's actually a really fun protagonist to root for. You want Yuma to succeed and help Astral collect the Number cards needed to unlock Astral's missing memories. You want Yuma to find a way to save everyone in the final stretch, even characters like Vector, who tricked Yuma multiple times.
(That's a great protag right there.)
On the topic of shipping, there are many different pairings involving Yuma in some way. The two most popular by far are Sharkbaitshipping (Yuma/Ryoga 'Shark' Kamishiro) and Keyshipping (Yuma/Astral), with Sharkbaitshipping holding 274 fics on Ao3 and Keyshipping holding 239 fics at the time of writing this. Other ships command varying degrees of popularity too, including Skyshipping (Yuma/Kotori, 45 fics), Seraphshipping (Yuma/Alit, 35 fics), Negativeshipping (Yuma/Vector, 169 fics), and Dokidokishipping (Yuma/Kaito, 144 fics). But there is one that is, in my mind, criminally rare: Aztecshipping, or Yuma/Michael 'III' Arclight. At the time this was written in March 2024, Aztecshipping had a mere 29 fics posted to Ao3. (30 fics if you include this!)
You explained who Yuma is, who is III?
I mean, if you're here you probably know who III is, buuut he's my special little blorbo and I'm posting this for III Day so I get to talk about him.
III (birth name: Michael Arclight) is the fifteen year old youngest son of the Arclight family, a group of four people who acted as one of the antagonist groups of the first half of the series. (The other three members being his older brothers IV and V, and his father Tron.) III is the nicest of the family and is seen to defuse arguments between his brothers, but at the same time has his own problems stemming from his broken family situation.
III is shown to be intensely and unwaveringly loyal to his family, displaying a willingness to both kill for the sake of those he cares about and die for their sake. In fact, during his Duel against Yuma, he deliberately goes out of his way to mentally break Yuma and kill Astral out of jealousy towards Yuma's healthier family and desperation to protect his own, only backing down from his desperate rage when a card he played (Final Prophecy) tried to punch a hole in reality to open a portal to the Barian World.
Tying into this, III puts up little resistance to his father's scheme to get revenge against Dr. Faker, often going along with all but the worst of his family's actions. He delivers a dangerous Number card to Shark at Tron's request, knowing that the card would try to control Shark, but later expresses discomfort when Tron performs a ritual to steal Haruto's power, due to the ritual causing pain to Haruto.
(Remember III's loyalty, it's a surprise tool that will help us later.)
Finally, III has a strong interest in ancient civilizations (with a dash of Ancient Aliens style conspiracies about out of place artifacts coming from other dimensions mixed in), much like how his father was once invested in researching interdimensional portals. This is also a surprise tool that will help us later.
The Ship Summary
To explain Aztecshipping, we have to go back to Yuma and III's fathers: Kazuma Tsukumo and Byron Arclight.
Byron was working with Dr. Faker and the explorer Kazuma on interdimensional portal research, and the three eventually went on a trip to uncover one of these portals. Unfortunately, Dr. Faker ended up betraying both Kazuma and Byron, sacrificing them to open the portal.
While Kazuma ended up trapped in the Astral World after this, Byron ended up stuck in the Barian World, and ultimately struck a deal with the Barians where he was granted power to get revenge against Dr. Faker in exchange for gathering Number cards for the Barians, and eventually returned to Earth as Tron.
As for their families that were left behind on Earth, the Tsukumos were able to stay relatively healthy, with Haru taking over as guardian to Yuma and Akari in the absence of Kazuma and his wife, the severely plot neglected Mirai. Yuma still missed his parents dearly, but his family remained functional.
The Arclights were not so lucky.
With no parents in the picture and oldest son Christopher too young to act as a guardian to his brothers/busy investigating what happened to his father while working for Dr. Faker as an assistant, both Michael and his second brother Thomas were left to an orphanage, only returning to their family when Tron came back and Christopher realized the truth. Tron reduced his sons to mere pawns in his revenge scheme, forcibly renaming Christopher, Thomas, and Michael as V, IV, and III respectively and granting them special crests to give them power, and subsequently allowed his family to fall to dysfunction as he obsessed over revenge.
In this way, Yuma and III are mirrors of each other, both losing their fathers in the same incident but reacting in opposite ways. Yuma is connected to the Astral World from the start with his friendship with Astral and his father's fate, while III is connected with the opposing Barian World due to Tron's deal and the fallout of it.
To that end, Yuma and III initially opposed each other, their first significant interaction being a Tag Duel where Yuma (working with Kaito) Dueled III (working with IV) in a bid to rescue Kaito's younger brother Haruto after his kidnapping at the hands of the Arclights. However, it really wasn't long before III became curious about Yuma and his determination, going out of his way to break into the Tsukumo household to investigate (and was subsequently distracted by the artifacts in the attic/started infodumping about them to Yuma. Nerd.)
(This is actually likely where the ship name Aztecshipping comes from, between Yuma's idolization of his absent father and III's love for ancient civilizations/his favourite card being Chronomaly Aztec Mask Golem.)
Desperate to protect his family from being potentially opposed by Yuma and jealous of the actually functional Tsukumos after meeting them, III challenged Yuma to a Duel, in which he tormented Yuma and killed Astral, before attempting to sacrifice himself in a forced tie just to stop Yuma. The turning point came when one of III's cards, Final Prophecy, started trying to forcibly open a portal to the Barian World at the cost of ending the world, forcing III to share his crest power with Yuma to try to revive Astral and stop Final Prophecy's effect.
The plan was a long shot; there was no guarantee that Yuma would be able to take that amount of power. Yuma withstood it though, and with Astral back, managed to work together to defeat III and stop Final Prophecy. This was the true turning point of their relationship, as III recognized Yuma as his first and only friend and trusted him to be able to save his broken family.
Remember III's intense loyalty? Good, we're coming back to that now.
After this, III vanished from the plot for a while, eventually returning to protect Yuma from being menaced by the Barians Mr. Heartland and Semimaru by way of throwing a sword at Mr. Heartland and outright declaring that he would act as Yuma's 'sword and shield' before teaming up with Yuma to Duel Semimaru. In turn, Yuma trusted III to have his Number cards back, after III willingly gave them up to Yuma after their Duel some time earlier.
It seems that by now III's undying loyalty fully extended to Yuma, as he went out of his way to redirect an attack that would have hit Yuma and his monster to strike him instead, once again showcasing his willingness to sacrifice himself for those he cares about. After the Duel, which ended with III and Yuma working together to combine Yuma's 'Number 39: Utopia' and III's 'Number 6: Chronomaly Atlandis' to beat Semimaru, Yuma let III have the new Number card won off Semimaru: 'Number 3: Cicada King'.
III continued to stay with and protect Yuma after this, temporarily living in the Tsukumo household and sticking alongside Yuma at all times to fulfil this. To that end, III calls to mind a knight, someone willing to fight and die for the one he protects without thought for himself. III is also seen to become concerned for Yuma's mental state due to Astral seemingly dying at the hands of Black Mist several episodes prior, and after Yuma returns from a trip to the Astral World to find and bring back Astral, is relieved to see him again.
III sacrificing for Yuma came to a head when he and V went out of their way to stall several Barians to protect Yuma, Astral, and Kaito during the big Barian invasion. III knew going in that he would die doing this, but he didn't care, willingly sacrificing himself to save Yuma one more time.
Initially, III claimed to Yuma that he and V were going to confront the Barians to get revenge for IV's death earlier, saying that he'd grown sick of Yuma's optimism, but this was a lie meant to stop Yuma from following him. When it became clear that the brothers were fighting a losing match against the Barian Mizael, V opened a video link to Yuma to deliver a final message. III took the opportunity to apologize for lying, saying that Yuma was a true friend and say goodbye, before declaring that he'd be with Yuma in spirit as Mizael launched his final attack, killing both III and V.
This sacrifice caused Yuma to break down sobbing at being unable to stop it from happening due to traveling to track down the Barian leader Don Thousand.
Luckily, after the defeat of the Barians, everyone who died in the final invasion came back to life, III included. The final episode reveals that III enrolled in Yuma's middle school, somehow ending up in the same year as Yuma despite being two years older than him. III's literal final scene in the series has him declaring that he'll fight alongside Yuma anywhere, which again. Knight motifs.
Ship Dynamics
Yuma and III start off as enemies, facing off against each other as their goals and family situations clashed. However, it really isn't long before III starts viewing Yuma as a friend due to Yuma's unending determination and aid in preventing the end of the world via Final Prophecy, eventually even extending the loyalty once reserved for family out to Yuma. Once this shift happens, the dynamic changes to that of a knight protecting his charge with the power of his sword and his own life on the line, willing to die to see that charge safe.
In turn, Yuma seems rather okay with III protecting him despite their notable rough start. He allows III to live in his house for a time and even gives III's Number cards back and temporarily shares his school uniform with him just so that III isn't wearing the same clothes the whole time (this is before III joins Yuma's school, by the way). He's distraught when III (and V) sacrifices himself to hold off the Barians, breaking down in tears after watching the final blow.
It's not all III protecting and sacrificing for Yuma, either. They work together very well when Dueling Semimaru, coming up with a plan to join their monsters together via Chronomaly Atlandis's effect to stop Semimaru. Yuma also promises to help save III's family where III could not, seemingly genuinely forgiving III for his actions during their Duel against each other.
They also have a connection via their interests; Yuma idolizes his missing explorer father and has a number of ancient artifacts in his house, while III has a strong interest in ancient civilizations. It's not hard to imagine them working together on explorations and archaeology digs as they get older, helping and protecting each other as needed.
Tldr: Aztecshipping is a very cute ship with protector/protectee themes and two young nerds. They should be together.
