Toronto in the 1900s was a different city from the one we know today.
The center of business had moved west of the historical Town of York site and the skyline was undeveloped.
The tallest structures were the Temple Building at 10 stories and the Trader’s Bank Building at 15 stories.
A new downtown to the west of Yonge and King Streets was built. The City of Toronto moved into a new City Hall, built at the head of Bay Street at Queen Street.
Much of this new downtown was destroyed in the Great Toronto Fire of 1904, but it was quickly rebuilt, with new taller buildings.
South of downtown, the railways dominated most of the lands. A new viaduct was built to carry the main lines and eliminate the many at-level crossings.
A single Union Station was built to replace the several railway stations of the rail lines. It sat empty for a while over disagreements between the government and the rail companies.
In the late nineteenth century, Toronto welcomed the rise of Victorian architecture, as well as many of its revival styles.
This style of architecture was thought to be more modern, unique and creative than its successor, characterized by steep gabled roofs, round angles, towers, turrets and dormers, shapely bay windows, stained glass, centric carved woodwork, and bright colored paneling.
This style lent itself well to narrower lots, and thus, Victorian-style housing was most abundant in the city’s traditionally middle-class neighborhoods where individual properties were smaller, most notably Cabbagetown, Trinity-Bellwoods, Parkdale, and The Annex.
These neighborhoods held some of the largest collections of Victorian houses in North America.
Specifically, houses constructed in the Annex developed an individual iteration of the Victorian style, called the “Annex Style House.”
This style contained a variety of diverse and eclectic elements borrowed from many different styles.
Most distinctively, these houses were built of a mix of brick and sandstone, turrets, domes, and decorative ornamentation.
The city received new European immigrant groups beginning in the late 19th century into the early 20th century, particularly Germans, French, Italians, and Jews.
They were soon followed by Russians, Poles, and other Eastern European nations, in addition to the Chinese entering from the West.
As the Irish before them, many of these migrants lived in overcrowded shanty-type slums, such as “the Ward,” which was centered on Bay Street, now the heart of the country’s Financial District.
As new migrants began to prosper, they moved to better housing in other areas, in what is now understood to be succession waves of settlement.
Despite its fast-paced growth by the 1920s, Toronto’s population and economic importance in Canada remained second to the much longer-established Montreal, Quebec.
The Great Depression of the 1930s reversed the employment trend, with approximately one-fourth of the Toronto population unemployed and caused severe financial problems for suburban Toronto.
Capital debt payments could not be met and expenditure on public services—sewage and piped water supply in places remote from the lake, for example—had to be postponed.
However, World War II’s demands for war supplies and soldiers soon changed the employment picture.
Following the war, and into the 1960s, times were prosperous throughout North America.
Toronto’s economy diversified and boomed, greatly altering the cultural and spatial pattern of the city.
Other factors after the war included the baby boom, demand for single-family dwellings, and the proliferation of the automobile.
Suburban sprawl was assisted by the increase in road networks and freeways, thereby consuming some of the best agricultural land in the region.
By 1953, a reorganization of local government had been created, along with the Corporation of Metropolitan Toronto, in an attempt to control development in the surrounding regions.
Suburban growth continued. In 1966, new City of Toronto boundaries were drawn, amalgamating 13 communities, with the Metropolitan government still in place.
By the 1976 census, Toronto passed Montreal to become the largest city in Canada, and the gap between these two cities continued to grow.

in my first nightmare last night, i was downtown near my university, even though i had no classes scheduled. i found a little district of three historical buildings:
One of them was a visitor house/gift shop that was very well maintained, sleek and modern with big windows, white and black tiles and cold blue lighting.
One was a really run down barn from the 1800s- but in the middle was a staircase that just kept going down, changing architectural styles as it did. It started as an 1800s staircase but slowly became more and more modern, as if construction had begun during the 1800s and finished in the 1990s, with each new worker changing their style to keep it contemporary. At the bottom it connected to the PATH, which is a Toronto thing: it's a giant miles-long connection of tunnels in wildly different styles throughout the whole city. (maybe that's where the stairs inspiration came from.)
The third was from the 1800s as well, but it looked so architecturally unstable it was insane. There were giant sections that stuck out of the side and were barely supported. There were entire staircases that were only connected to the walls at the very top and very bottom, with no railings.
I went exploring the district, which was all empty. When it got late, I decided to stay overnight. I discovered that in the visitors' building, the light switches still worked. I also found a series of keys to unlock and lock every door in the building. I spent the night, and then the next day I continued to explore.
However, in the visitors' building the next day, I found a security guard. She was my height, with a fluffy pixie cut, and her eyes were disturbingly big and round. Their proportion to the rest of her face was like a furby. We exchanged pleasantries and I realized she was actually an automaton. I continued to explore, which she didn't seem to have a problem with.
The security guard went into a small, enclosed little room that was the security office. Near the front of the visitors' house, I discovered a basket of plums and granola bars. I was hungry, so I started to eat; from the office, the guard called out to be careful, because that many plums could give me diarrhea.
This made me realize that she could somehow see me even though I was out of her line of sight completely- and something in me started to feel that I was in horrible danger and this was so, so wrong, and I needed to leave immediately.
I quietly gathered my things and slipped out the door- but after I did, for some reason I called back to say goodbye to her before locking the door I had just come out of. The door was glass, and looking through it I could see her in the doorway to the security office, screaming so hard that her entire face was bright, bright red.
I started to run, knowing she was coming after me. My only thought was that I needed to get to the subway, because even an automaton couldn't outrun a train. However, by the time I had formed this full thought, I realized I was running into the PATH via the staircase in the barn instead of running to the actual nearest subway station. And then I remembered that this section of the PATH didn't actually connect to the subway.
I was at the bottom by the time I realized my mistake, and I was just staring up the stairs, knowing she was coming for me but that I didn't have enough strength to run back up the stairs and to the closest subway station before she got there, when I woke up.

Cancer screwed things up.
We were supposed to go for 4 days & 4 nights on Via Rail from Vancouver to Toronto, seeing the mountains and the huge prairies and the beauty of Canada. Then we'd sightsee Toronto and Niagara Falls, while staying in a beautiful luxury hotel and then having a great flight home.
I got for the trip: new prescription glasses, new prescription sunglasses, 2 wigs, 4 new tops, new pants, new jacket, eyelashes!
Then my liver acted horribly wrong, has put me in huge danger. Trip had to be all cancelled 😫

LIFTING YOUR SPIRITS TO THE STARS
I can still remember that night like it was yesterday. It was the New Year’s Eve, 2099. I took the high-speed rail from Calgary to Toronto to visit the city since college.
After settling into the hotel, I hiked it to the bar near the riverfront. They continued to walk ahead of me whilst I preferred to get lost in the excitement around me.
It was a beautiful sight; the city was glowing with vibrant orange hues contrasted with the blinding white snow sprinkling onto the streets below. Most of the humans preferred to stay bundled in their coats and jackets, while the Cererians came to explore the whimsy of Earth winters.
Cererians preferred to stay alone and away from humans, celebrating the new year in their own ways. They would never work with humans unless required to, as they viewed them as lesser beings.
When I made it to my old hangout spot, Wolfhart’s, I sat myself on the nearest open stool. The place was crowded with people, some were recounting stories to their companions in the booths across from the bar, whilst others were playing darts near the far end of the room. The walls were strewn with various baseball photos, newspaper clippings, worn-down memorabilia. Just as I was about to order a drink, the bartender ran towards me with great haste.
“Lee! You bastard!” he shouted.
“Harold!” I retorted, “you look great! You still on the nanodiet?”
“Not anymore, I had to quit because of work.”
“Been busy here? I thought you were thinking of shutting down last time I saw you?”
“I was. I’ve had to work double shifts since the Cererians began to move in. They hate dealing with humans so they always request that I shut down the bar and only keep it open for them.”
“I’m sorry about that.” I replied dejectedly, “I hope that I can lift your spirits a little then, we’re still human after all.”
“Hey, as long as I’m getting paid, I don’t care if you’re a robot or a pile of hamsters in a suit. What would you like to drink?”
I paused, trying to think of a drink that would show my maturity since college.
“Get me a Pabst.”
“You got it, college boy.” Harold said.
As I waited, I continued to look around the bar itself. I could recognize most of them as being from the area, but there was one that really stood out from the rest. At the end of the bar sat a Cererian woman. As was expected for her species, she had magenta-tinted skin with a pair of pitch-black eyes and razor-sharp teeth that contrasted with her full lips. She was wearing a human-like business casual attire with short brunette hair and two antennae drooping down to her eyes. She spun her finger around the rim of her still-full glass, staring at it with melancholic sincerity. I had never seen a Cererian in a human bar before, especially one that chose to be alone.
“Here’s your piss water, Mr. Sophisticated,” Harold said as he placed the can down.
“Who is that Cer at the end of the bar?” I asked.
“Oh, she’s a regular. She never gave me a name though. She always orders the same rum and coke but never drinks it. Whenever I’m occupied, she just vanishes and leaves a hefty tip. Why do you ask?”
“I mean, she seems pretty lonely. Do you think you can give her another rum and coke; tell her it was from me?”
“Sure, not a problem.”
Harold immediately began to work his magic, mixing equal parts Captain Morgan with a 2-liter of Coke and garnishing with a thick slice of lime. Although inaudible from my end, I could see the interaction in full. He gently placed the glass next to the previously made one, pointing at my before walking away to help another costumer. Once he was away, the Cererian stared at both with dumbfounded curiosity. Her antennae stood upright as she turned towards me. I waved at her, and she waved back at me. I took this as a sign to walk over and talk to her.
When I walked over, I took the seat immediately to her left. She perched on the stool in a squatting position, below her waist were lizard-like legs with scales like broken glass and wide 3-toed feet.
“Why did you order this poison for me, human? I already requested my own from the liquor-giver.”
“I wanted to be nice. I’ve never seen a Cererian alone in an area filled with humans. Why did you choose to come here?”
“The liquor-giver is a powerful source of information despite his underutilized body. Your planet has bizarre customs that I am still learning.”
“If you think rum and coke is poison, why did you order it?”
“I recognized that you humans only enter this building with the intention to guzzle this mixture of neuron-melting fluids. I have never tried it; my cluster has told me stories of you humans and your misbehavior after consumption.”
“It’s not poison, trust me. We do it for fun, it gives us more courage to do things we’d never do before. What do you do for fun on Ceres?”
“Our recreation involves sportsmanship and finances. We would never compete against each other while our minds were inept to function.”
“Fair enough,” I replied with a hearty chuckle, “but you’re not in a stuffy business scenario, this is a social setting! Live a little! You said you wanted to learn? Well, alcohol is your best friend for that.”
“I’ve always wanted to try it. I just never had someone else to try it with.”
“I can do it with you.”
“You would?” she replied with her antennae standing upright once again.
“Sure! I’m happy to help.”
The two of us grabbed our separate glasses and held them close to our lips. On the count of three, we both downed the entire glass. It took me a few chugs whilst she swallowed the entire drink in one gulp. I felt flushed and ready for another round, she seemed equal parts sick and ready to go again. Her magenta skin began to turn a vibrant pink around her cheeks and nose.
“Wow!” she said with vigor, “that was incredible! It felt quite fiery too, was it supposed to do that?”
“That’s part of the fun,” I replied with a smile. “I’m Lee, by the way.”
“It’s been pleasant to meet you, Lee. Do you wish for my name?”
“I would love to hear it.”
“It’s Dominitariasquintaglio Viltricentarius Sentrifutarianik the VII”
“…Excuse me?” I retorted.
“Dominitariasquintaglio. Viltricentarius. Sentrifutarianik. The Seventh.”
“That’s a beautiful name, complicated yet beautiful. I’m sorry to sound human, but do you have a shorthand or a nickname?”
“Some human compatriots call me Dominique.”
“Dominique. That’s a very cute name,” I replied.
Just as I could finish my response, I heard a beep from my phone. When I pulled it up to check, it appeared to be my alarm to go back to my hotel. As soon as I could get out of my stool, Dominique stared at me with confusion.
“Where are you going, Lee?”
“I’m headed back to my hotel; I have to get ready to visit my family.”
“Family?”
“Sorry, cluster. It’s been nice to meet you though! I’ll be sure to stop by here before I go back home.”
Dominque frantically turned her head from Lee towards the television broadcasting the celebration.
“The time-counter says you have another 3 hours until then.”
“Ok…”
“and you said you wanted to help me try new drinks.”
“Yeah…”
“So,” she said, seemingly flustered with shorter and shorter breaths, “do you want to stay a bit longer?”
“Are you asking me to continue drinking with you?”
“Yes. I would like for you, Lee, to stay here and help me try new mixtures of beverages.”
I looked back and forth between my phone and Dominique. I could choose to either visit family and have the same mundane conversations I’ve had for the past 24 years, or drink with a Cererian who was willing to drink with me and learn human life first-hand.
“Sure, why not,” I replied, “let’s make it a competition then. Loser has to pay.”
She extended her hand and we shook on it, “it’s a deal, may the best lifeform win,” she said with a heartfelt smile.
