Why do people prefer stories about revenge rather than stories about forgiveness? Because everyone loves retribution. Seeing how they hit for a cause, and hit hard, is a sight that you will never get tired of and for which you don’t feel guilty. This is the only type of violence that I have certainly never been afraid of.

Già autore dell’eccellente Saga, Tonino Benacquista aveva pubblicato qualche anno prima questo romanzo, che ho letto nella speranza che fosse allo stesso livello. Non è così: comunque gradevole, a suo modo originale, ma manca quella magia di inchiodare il lettore alla pagina.

J’ai beaucoup aimé «Saga» de Tonino Benacquista 💜 J’avais ce roman dans ma PAL depuis des lunes! Ça m’a fait du bien de rire et de suivre les nombreuses histoires que propose l’auteur (qui ne manque certes pas d’imagination!). Seuls bémols: j’ai senti un petit dérapage pendant le dernier quart du récit (si ça avait été un match d’impro, j’aurais crié «cabotinage!» ☺️) et tout cela m’a laissé un peu perplexe, comme s’il y avait trop de fins 🤔 (si ça avait été un film, j’aurais prédit le générique à plusieurs reprises 😆). Mais ne boudez pas votre plaisir, «Saga» est tout de même un très bon divertissement qui n’a pas pris une ride (écrit en 1997). Je vous le recommande!

These are the titles I promised you. I tried to put all the genres, all the styles of my favourite books (and still, there are a lot missing).

"Neverwhere" and "American gods", Neil Gaiman, fantasy, classics I could reread endlessly. The first one will take you to the basement of London with the forgotten of reality, the second one to America where a widower mourns with old gods.

"The 5th Wave", Rick Yancey, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, hard but very well written, very fine on a psychological level. What if the invaders used human hands to eradicate those who got in their way?

"Dangerous Liaisons", Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, epistolary novel, classic, or how a very bad reason can give birth to a very beautiful love.

"Pride and Prejudice" and "Mansfield Park" by Jane Austen, two English classics, three very different ways of seeing love. Very nice.

"Hunger games", Suzanne Collins, I guess you know them but I found the books really more advanced than the movies and Katniss is more interesting, tougher but also more fragile.

"The Long Walk" and "Running man", Stephen king, the first one is a cruel race done by teenagers and the second one is the struggle of a man who just wanted to be able to feed his wife and child: the game show in all its horror.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", Douglas Adams, science fiction, what if the average Englishman found himself embroiled (literally!) in an adventure that could save the planet itself? Very funny.

"The Chalk Man", C. J. Tudor, interesting triller, which shows us children more as constructed beings than as innocent little beings.

"Mortimer" and "Men at Arms", Terry Pratchett, part of the Discworld cycle, two of my favourite characters: Death himself and a tired, alcoholic little commissioner with a strong sense of duty. Brilliant. Funny and yet very accurate.

"The Gospel of Loki", Joanne Harris, where the story of the god of Chaos is told very modestly by the god himself.

"A Thousand White Women", Jim Fergus, a bittersweet look at the slow agony of the Indian tribes, and the detestable contempt of the colonists.

"Malavita", Tonino Benacquista, how would a family of repentant mafioso live if they found themselves stuck in the north of France?

"Heroes die ", Matthew Stover, science fiction, what would Men do if they had the possibility to go to another dimension full of magic, elves and fairies? But virtual reality films, of course!

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" ,Truman Capote, who would you become if you had the opportunity to reinvent yourself? That's what the bubbly young woman the narrator is about to meet has done.

"Brockback Mountain", Annie Prouxl, romantic, the story of two cowboys who love each other in a time when it is not possible. Wonderful.

"His at Night", Sherry Thomas, also romantic, or how a man who lives by playing a role will fall in love with someone stronger than him. Nice.

"Lie with me", Philippe Besson, a boy's first love with a friend from his class, whom he will never see again but never forget. Quite sad.

I hope that you will find a way to protect yourself and that this period will pass as quickly as possible. Good luck to you.

WOOOAAAHHHH!!! I know some of them, like Hichhikers Guide and Pride and Prejudice. My bro and father have read the whole Hichhiker series and my mom is a big Jane Austen fan. I don’t like those kinds of books tho.

But the Neverwhere got me, you know I love myself some London mystery + Neil Geiman, my beloved <33 he is VERY good.

The Gospel of Loki sounds very promising, will probably check it out, hmm...

Some of them sound like musical materials, so that’s a good sign 👀

Vu de l’extérieur, l’Hôtel des Tilleuls avait ce cachet modeste qui n’inspire que les vagabonds et les touristes en sac à dos. Mais dès qu’on passait le seuil, on se retrouvait dans un petit palace laissé à l’abandon malgré ses heures de gloire. Des boiseries, du velours rouge, un escalier à double révolution soutenu par des atlantes, bref, un vrai décor de cinéma. On m’a demandé si je voulais une chambre. Malgré une certaine fatigue, j’ai eu le courage de dire non. Le jeune concierge n’a pu répondre à aucune de mes questions, l’endroit avait changé trois fois de propriétaires en trente ans avant d’être repris par un trust hôtelier. Le gérant m’a dit à peu près la même chose et personne dans tout le personnel n’a pu me faire avancer d’un pouce. À force d’insister, j’ai bien vu que je commençais à fatiguer tout le monde. J’ai passé un coup de fil au type des pompes funèbres qui s’apprêtait à clouer le cercueil de tonton. Pour me laisser le temps de décider, j’ai pris une chambre à l’Hôtel des Tilleuls. L’après-midi, j’ai traîné dans le coin en posant d’autres questions sans réponses, jusqu’à ce qu’un cantonnier me montre le cimetière, un petit carré discret bordé d’arbres, à un jet de pierre de l’hôtel. J’ai trouvé étrange que, dans une gentille ville comme celle-là, il y ait un hôtel aussi chic pour un cimetière aussi désuet. - Tonino Benacquista, La volière, Tout à l'égo, 1999.

Ce qui se cache derrière

Nous explorons des personnages bien mystérieux. Tonino Benasquista a l’art de nous faire partager des quotidiens qui nous semblent au premier abord bien inoffensifs et qui se révèlent lourds de passé, de passif ou d’ombre. J’ai préféré les textes les plus courts, comme « Patience d’ange », dont le dénouement est particulièrement réussi à mon goût. « Meurtre dans la rue des Cascades » m’a semblé trop long par rapport à son contenu, comme si Tonino Benasquita faisait durer un peu inutilement. J’apprécie son style incisif et dépouillé et j’ai trouvé ici que c’était parfois un peu long.
