104th Hop Step Award - H☆S (October, 1993)
Togashi-sensei's Direct Instructions! The road to conquer all areas of manga!
Mass Recruitment for the 104th (October 1993 Term) H☆S Award!! This month's judge is Yoshihiro Togashi-sensei!
Tumblr media
The Hop☆Step Award (H☆S Award) was a monthly recruitment project by Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) that took place from March 1985 to July 1996.
I already translated Togashi's ten "4-koma" that he drew during the Yu Yu Hakusho serialization to give advice to the participants of the H☆S Award - October 1991 & 1992 Terms.
This time, I am translating the October 1993 Term, where he gives the newcomer manga artists more tips and advice on how to create different styes of manga. The winner of this edition was Eiichiro Oda with the one-shot "Ikki Yakō" (一鬼夜行). At the time, Yu Yu Hakusho was in the Black Chapter Arc.
Togashi gives instructions to help creating gag, love comedies, sports and fantasy manga. He used a little bit of all those elements in Yu Yu Hakusho.
Part 1. Gag Manga
Tumblr media
T/N: Chain letters (letters of misfortune) were popular in Japan during the Showa era. A ''letter'' or ''postcard'' was delivered to your home/work in the style of ''If you do not send it to a certain number of people, you will be unhappy.'' The sender is unknown. Chain letters were also a hot topic in magazines and manga, like Doraemon and a bunch of gag manga.

The funny versions of Yanagizawa, Kido and Kaito represent the editors in charge of:
Jungle King Tar-chan/DNA² (Kaoru Kushima);
Lucky Man/JoJo (KAITO Katsuhiko);
Yu Yu Hakusho/Monmonmon (Tomoyuki Shima)
Waiting for powerful works that will break these guys territories! !
Tumblr media
They were responsible for the screening, checking all the applications and eliminating the mediocre works before passing them on to Togashi. Inside their territories, works with "characters that are all very similar," "characters with no strong personality at all" or "just imitations of existing characters" were mercifully discarded.
Part 2. Romantic Comedy

T/N: The fantasy illustration of Botan, Keiko, Yukina, Shizuru and Atsuko in medieval clothes was designed to the opening page of Yu Yu Hakusho volume 11, tankobon edition.
Tumblr media
🏆 Winner: Eiichiro Oda
Oda-sensei was the inner of this edition! Togashi-sensei reviews his 31-page one-shot, "Ikki Yakou", that was published in the 1994 Shonen Jump Spring Special, and later reprinted in 1998 as part of Wanted!, a compilation of Oda's pre-One Piece stories.

all the times gon showed affection, interest, care and basically relied on killua
Did I search all the times Gon explicitively expressed his affection to Killua? Yes, yes I did. Do I regret it? No, no I don't.
I decided to choose the manga since it's what Togashi wrote. However, it is important to note that there are a lot of more times if we add both versions of the anime and the movies. In addition to this, I chose the most explicit times in which Gon expressed himself so there is no misunderstanding. (Though I do think it's basically the whole manga.)
This post is hella long and had to be divided into parts, so bear with me. This is just the beginning. (Edit: Here's the link of the full post.)

Hihi! I saw your post about Yu Yu Hakusho requests and was wondering, if you're not too bogged down already, and if you're still taking them if I might request one:
Could I ask for either Hiei or Kurama and what might happen when they realize they have feeling for a someone?
If not, no worries! I hope you have a great day either way!
Hello!! Thank you for requesting, sorry if I finished your request late but I hope you still enjoyed this regardless :)
Reader here is gender neutral(They/Them) and this will be in the form of headcanons, also I wanted to do both hope you don't mind huhuhu~
REMINDER: This character does not belong to me but belongs to Yoshihiro Togashi. This is all fictional work so please try not to take this too seriously :)
Tumblr media
Hiei is...a little oblivious in all honesty, he probably thinks you did something to him....
But as soon as he shows how different he acts around you and the others notice this, they will confront Hiei about it.
Once they say his in love, the first thing his gonna in a lot of in denial.
Like how can he fall for a weak human?? Thats the question that runs through his brain all the time.
He thought that it was lust, like a sexual thing but he was wrong....his the definition of 'He fell first and fell harder'.
Once he realizes that he actually wants you to be his mate for life, he will never ever let you go.
He will do these little things that will show how he cares for you, and you might think its because y'all are friends but nooo, he never did those things to Kurama or the others now did he?
He wanted you to confess first but of course in the end this man is impatient soo he decided to confess first!
~ Went like this ~
''Go out with me mortal'' Hiei saids to you looking straight into your eyes ''W-What?'' You respond ''Did I stutter?'' He snarled and you just nod while blushing and thats how y'all because a couple!
Basically when Hiei realizes his in love, the first thing he'll do is be in denial, about how he could fall for a human.
Then he'll have a talk session with Kurama, probs asking for advice, waits for you to confess first(But gets impatient so in the end confesses first) and dropping barely noticeable hints.
Hiei having a crush is very much new to him, so do cut him some slack~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
Kurama having a crush is....interesting to say the least.
Now Kurama wouldn't care much for looks, the first thing is personality and how well you'll get along with his family.
But he'll be the type where 'You fell first but he fell harder' and when he does it hits him real hard.
Unlike Hiei there's no denial, its more like ''What am I feeling?''
When he asks his mom and tells her everything, he discovers that what he feeling was love....
Love for you? How unexpected.
At first he would try to push those feelings away since he doesn't want you to get involved in things that are none of your business.
Yoko at first also just wanted to use you for...somethings but soon fell hard for you just like Shuichi did.
I feel like the time when Shuichi confessed to you, Yoko was itching to take over Shuichi and just kiss hug you lol
He definitely confesses first, with the flowers and beneath a tree.
~ Went like this ~
''Are you be free this coming weekend?'' Kurama asked kissing your Backhand, you blushed and just nodded to his question due to being embarrassed. ''Hm..good, I would love to take you on a...date~'' Kurama said smiling tenderly at you but his cheeks have darken shades of pink. ''O-Oh...i..I'll see you then!'' You unintentionally yell, he just chuckles and kissed your backhand again.
When Kurama falls in love, as I stated above. He falls hard.
He will be the best boyfriend you'll ever have!(Not like you guys will break up)
Tumblr media
Done~
Thanks for sending in this request :3, and I hope you liked this!
Also got carried away writing Kurama's 'Went like this' part lol
See you guys on my next post!~
Reblogs are appreciated and Feedback/Comments are always appreciated! :3
how do you think gon will deal with all the emotions later??? i cant see anything good coming up, likeeee gon usually straightforwardly faces all his irritants, right? he doesn't think through much, he simply does that he wants or needs most of the time... and among all the things he will probably be stressing about (his nen, kite, etc) is his and killua's omissions
but then there's no killua on the whale island to have a conflict with. there's only mito who he can talk to, but she spent her whole life on the island raising gon and working so i think she might be not experienced enough to give him some kinda advice...
in a nutshell, do you think gon will have to bottle up or something? how is he gonna get rid of the stress and deal with his emotions?
personally i expect him to just blow up at some point before he learns how to deal with his inner conflicts like a mature person would do
Hello!
I definitely think Gon has an emotional road ahead of him post-CAA. However, it's worth looking at some of the last pages we've seen of Gon:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The 2 pages after this are him talking about meeting Ging and the complicated feelings he had about that, and Mito telling him about all the homework he has to do.)
I think what Togashi is trying to convey with these pages is that Gon is back in a stable, familiar environment with people he loves--a good place for him to be while healing from his experiences. Whale Island looks like such a pleasant place to be in those pages, with good food, his two closest family members around him, and clean sheets dried by the sun.
Of course, I still think it's incredibly hard for him to be separated from Killua, especially under the circumstances, and it's also hard for him to be without nen, and he has lots to work through in general with regards to what happened in CAA... But I think the explosion of feelings you're referring to was what he already went through in the course of CAA, and he learned that that came with heavy consequences, so he can't allow himself to go down that path again. The way he dealt with his problems and emotions before lead him to nearly lose his life, so he can't simply return to his old ways of facing everything head-on and rushing into whatever situation he wants without thinking.
This period of calm he's currently in is where he's going to have to find ways to work through his pain, heal, and eventually start making decisions--about what he wants to do next, how he's going to deal with the emotions he has, and what he wants to do in his life over the longer term. He's in a situation where he's going to have to change internally because he doesn't have an option to deal with these things externally for now. I'm sure he'll get that chance in the future, but not until after he's changed and matured some.
I think he'll be okay, but it'll take him some time to get there! He'll have to learn to turn inwards more, contemplate what happened, cry when he needs to, figure out how to express how he feels in some way, get support in whatever ways he's able, and try to appreciate all that he has around him right now before he can take the next step of his journey.
Hello tiredhomeboi, I'm sorry to bother you if it's night or you're busy, but I'd love to ask you something please.
First of all, I want to tell you that I love your drawings and they are great! Really well done and it makes us want to love the Leopika or the pariston/ging even more! 😊❤️ You inspire me a lot and I'd also like to draw people from Hunter x Hunter but especially the phantom troupe that I particularly appreciate.
The problem is that I can't find my style, or draw exactly what I have in my heading. So I was thinking that maybe a pro like you had some tips/advice for drawing 😅😥🙏
Did you learn how to do proportions before drawing and with what? Do you use references? (I do, but it limits me a lot on my ideas as I don't necessarily find references that reach what I have in mind 😞)
How did you learn to do sketches so easily? How did you find your own style?
I'm really sorry if I'm taking up your time. Thank you very much for your time and attention ❤️
hey there, thank you so much for the kind message :,D
I’ll be honest, im not the best at giving art advice. although I’m still in the process of improving my art, I can tell you how I’ve been developing my style.
I like looking and analyzing my interests that have unique art styles. For example, I see togashi’s style in hxh and what I’ve gathered based on his work is how he ranges from some simplicity to a more very detailed style. For me, I love his simplistic style a lot more. and that makes me want to develop my style that is more cartoon centric, if that makes sense. So see what art styles intrigues you the most, study it, copy it (which is valid for beginner artists imo, but don’t claim it as your own art‼️), then forget about the copying method and practice it, and overall, just have fun with it.
despite achieving my cartoony style that im used to having, I still try to make the proportions in my art look decent. I’ll be honest, I still need some practice on it. sorry if this sounds vague, but I use a lot of shapes and lines to figure out the proportions (ex. For the head, I start off with a circle and a horizontal line at the center of it, and change the height of the line depending on where you want the eyes to be at) I wish I could show you some examples for this part but I don’t have my ipad with me right now. :,) one of my other ways of practicing proportions are redrawing official art from my favorite interests. it’s honestly a fun way for me to improve on drawing proportions. but if I want to draw a character in any pose of my choice, I look up references on Pinterest. I know this method is pretty much common and im sorry about that :,)
for sketches tho, sometimes, i do tend to struggle on sketching as well :,) if its something im used to drawing all the time tho (example: kurapika) then it isnt as hard to sketch easily.
overall, those are my ways and methods in developing my art. sorry this took me days to reply back, i wanted to try to answer all your questions as best as i can. lemme know if i need to be more clear on certain parts :,D
HxH theory:Cards
Hello! I'm back with a new theory dedicated to HxH!And due to this theory's argument, Disclaimer: this is only a tought of mine and we don't know what Togashi sensei will do for the next chapters. Also, since this is a theory, is only a hypothized possibility, and will matter nothing, unless the person in charge of it will determine if it will matter or not.
Said so, here we go. Today's theory will be based on this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now most will ask what does this mean and whatever. Those are pratically official cards. Respectivley from a lottery done by shonen jump, official puzzle exibition cards, niuya ( animator 2011) and still from shonen jump video for the puzzle exibition. Now, since i'm a curious thing, i've searched the meaning of those cards. Both individually and also about love. So here we have:
Queen of clubs
The queen of clubs is often seen as a card of change. She can represent new beginnings, transitions, and opportunities. Whether you're looking for career advice or guidance in your personal life, this card has something to offer you. Meanwhile In a love reading, you can see the Queen of Clubs as a positive sign. If you are single and seeking a partner, you may pull this queen to encourage you to go out and pursue love. Since she is all about action, be brave and make the first move on your love interest.
King of clubs
The king of clubs Generally represents People that generally are those with a lot of power and authority. They may be businessmen, work in politics, or famous in the arts. King of clubs represents a dark man, who is loyal and kind.He is a good businessman, shrewd with money and investments, but isn't selfish. In a love reading, the King of Clubs can foretell a happy marriage. If the King of Clubs represents your significant other, you can rest assured that this person is very passionate about you. They may want to take care of you and build a life together.
Ace of diamonds
The ace of diamonds is A sign of good fortune, the Ace of Diamonds is a very exciting card to pull. It represents your wants and wishes coming true on the earthly plane. A new opportunity may be coming your way, especially pertaining to work and money. This playing card can also foretell a scholarship, an unexpected win, or financial gain. In love, While the Ace of Diamonds typically represents financial increase and work-related opportunities, it also embodies exciting news when pulled in a love reading. This playing card can indicate that a message from a past or new lover may be coming your way soon.
Justice
is a Major Arcana tarot card, numbered either VIII or XI ( in HxH case, is numbered XI ). Justice represents Equity, rightness, probity, executive; triumph of the deserving side in law. Reversed: Law in all its departments, legal complications, bigotry, bias, excessive severity. As for romance, Justice is about karma, and if you've been putting forth the effort, love and romance will be coming your way. Also, In love and relationship arena, the Justice tarot card represents decisions and choices,as love outcome means the outcome of this relationship will depend exactly on what you put into it and also When it comes to love and relationships, Justice is about truth and consequences.
This last part, and the another description for the king of clubs at my honest opinion remind me of fugetsu's actual situation with kacho and killua's personality. Also, when in regard of love, the fact that the Analysis based on the cards make seem that in an eventual romantic situation, fugetsu will seem to take action and killua will seem more 'quiet'. This also reminds me of yusuke and keiko in a way. In YYH for the part concerning romance, It's almost like that the one that keeps the "action" that makes the relationship move is generally keiko:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So a case of romance like this wouldn't be totally extranged for Togashi sensei. Also, this same Analysis has shown that they could also both work well individually. Like pratically now. Maybe during this theory i've kept a love driven mentality like Prince Tyson and Palm, but it was something fun to study how a character and something that could be related to It might work. By the way, more theories will come, and this is only a tought of mine and we don't know what Togashi sensei will do for the next chapters.
Lovely Ghostwriter
It’s a common theory that the Yorknew City fortunes foreshadowed the deaths of Shalnark and Kortopi. For this reason, many believe Shizuku will meet her fate in the treasure room of the Black Whale, pursuant to her prophecy. Neon’s fortunes predict up to a maximum of five weeks, so it would seem their eventual realization is purely coincidental. However, I believe the realization of Neon’s prophecies is in fact a product of her post-mortem Nen.
LOVELY GHOSTWRITER: PRE-MORTEM MECHANICS
Lovely Ghostwriter is said to be 100% accurate with its predictions, but that doesn’t mean everything it predicts will come true. Remember that Nen, in its most basic form, is an extension of a person’s will. Following Neon’s personal philosophy, her fortunes are meant for the living, so they can make an effort to “improve their lives and avoid misfortune”.
Tumblr media
Theoretically, a fortune without a warning should be 100% accurate, without stipulations. But this isn’t really how the ability works. The ability’s lack of rigidity becomes clear through Chrollo’s use of it. Refraining from reading other fortunes is not a condition of the power. In addition, the “warnings” necessary to alter one’s future may actually come from other fortunes. References to the spider losing half its limbs are present in multiple fortunes, some of which do not involve warnings (i.e. Chrollo’s). However, this fate is still avoided. How can it be that the fate in Chrollo’s fortune was avoided using a warning from a different fortune altogether?
Rather than functioning as a hard-defined prophecy generator, Lovely Ghostwriter serves more as a story-telling device with major themes in existentialism. Definitionally, existentialism is the idea that humans are in control of their own fates. Hunter x Hunter is rife with existentialist themes, not only in the Phantom Troupe’s subversion of their fates…
Tumblr media
… but also in Killua’s and Koala’s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With that in mind, let’s look at some of the ability’s alleged characteristics:
Lovely Ghostwriter is 100% accurate.
Events referenced in the poem are typically present as metaphors.
Each verse represents a week of the current month, up to a maximum of five verses.
Misfortune can be avoided if warnings are heeded.
However, Togashi’s original intentions don’t necessarily reflect the significance of the fortunes now.
THE PROPHECIES, FULFILLED
Let’s go over the fortunes that have come true, specifically those which indicate an invalidation of Lovely Ghostwriter’s “rules”. These fortunes exceed the five-week limit and suggest there is more going on with the ability than meets the eye.
Deaths of Shalnark, Pakunoda, and Kortopi
“Harvest barren, wine spilled, lovers slumber Beside the bloody Scarlet Eyes.“
Present in multiple of the Troupe’s fortunes, these lines foreshadow the deaths of Pakunoda, Shalnark, and Kortopi. They are not, as Phinks suggests, referring to Kurapika, rather they are juxtaposing the murder of the Troupe members with the massacre of the Kurta clan. As mentioned previously, events in the poems are typically present as metaphors. If these fortunes are to be fulfilled, we should expect them to be resolved in ways that are not necessarily literal, but metaphorical and poetic.
Death of Shalnark
Shalnark’s fortune is unequivocally a warning.
“Even just one call, you must not make When needed most, it won’t connect. To answer your phone is another mistake, One time in three, the reaper calls collect.”
Ostensibly, Shalnark follows this advice and changes his immediate fate. However, we know he is eventually killed by Hisoka in a manner that eerily resembles the fortune.
Even just one call, you must not make When needed most, it won’t connect.
Having had his Nen ability stolen by Chrollo, he is unable to make his most-needed call. It may also be the case that Shalnark was calling Kortopi when he was confronted by Hisoka. It’s a bit unclear.
To answer your phone is another mistake, One time in three, the reaper calls collect.
Shalnark answers a call from Chrollo prior to his death. It’s not so outlandish to believe the third call is the one he receives when he encounters Hisoka.
Tumblr media
The One Most Needed
“Amuse yourself with the entr’acte. Seek out new friends once in a bind. Perhaps to the east, one can be tracked The one most needed, you’re sure to find.“
This prophecy is likely realized before Neon’s alleged death, in the Greed Island arc, but I wanted to include it because I feel it is important. The two friends in question here are most likely Abengane, the Nen Exorcist, and Kalluto Zoldyck. However, it is crucial to make the distinction between which is which. Kalluto tracks Abengane with his Nen, meaning Abengane is “the one to be tracked.” That means Kalluto may be “the one most needed”.
Remember that Chrollo’s fortune also had an additional verse after this, and he did not find Abengane nor recruit Kalluto until after the associated week. I don’t think this is necessarily a plot-hole, as the third-week verse was simply Lovely Ghostwriter’s advice, in accordance with Neon’s philosophy. But it does show that Lovely Ghostwriter has always had the ability to see beyond its allotted time frame.
IMPLICATIONS OF POST-MORTEM NEN
Disappearing from Chrollo’s Book
Tumblr media
At some point, Lovely Ghostwriter disappears from Chrollo’s book. The implication here seems to be that Neon has died, and this is tacitly confirmed by Chrollo. Shizuku is unaware that the ability disappeared, so we can assume it occurred sometime during the Troupe’s separation. We know from the call between Chrollo and Shalnark that the Troupe has been apart for quite some time after the events of the Chimera Ant arc.
Tumblr media
I believe Neon’s death occurred after the Troupe’s separation but before Chrollo’s fight with Hisoka. This sets in motion the effects of her post-mortem Nen before the murders of Shalnark and Kortopi.
Sun and Moon
Tumblr media
More confirmation that the only way to remove abilities from the book is death. Not even forcing Chrollo into Zetsu removes abilities from the book.
One possible problem with Neon possessing post-mortem Nen is the peculiarities surrounding Sun and Moon. We learn from Chrollo that Sun and Moon remained in his book after the owner’s death, due to the presence of post-mortem Nen. I can think of a few explanations for this, and I don’t think it actually disproves the possibility of Neon’s post-mortem Nen. In fact, it may support it.
Sun and Moon was “willed” to remain in Chrollo’s Book, by the previous owner.
Tumblr media
It’s unclear whether Chrollo was on friendly terms with the person he stole the ability from, but Togashi does make a point of associating him with Meteor City. The Elder shouldn’t need to make an explicit condition for his ability to remain in Chrollo’s book. Nen is an extension of will, so if he wanted Chrollo to keep the ability, it may very well have remained as a result.
The ability does not need to remain in Chrollo’s Book after the post-mortem effects trigger.
Let’s say Neon wrote a fortune just before she died. Would the fortune then become inaccurate? I don’t think so. Lovely Ghostwriter shouldn’t have to stick around for fortunes to become true, so it’s entirely possible the post-mortem effects were applied retroactively, then the ability vanished from Chrollo’s book.
Neon died and was resurrected.
Extremely unlikely, but possible. Her death would cause the ability to disappear from Chrollo’s book, and her resurrection would cause her to regain it. However, I find it lessens the significance of her fortunes coming true and makes the ability’s change in properties more difficult to explain.
I know some of you will remain unconvinced after this section, and I admit the persistence of Sun and Moon is the biggest pitfall to this theory. However, I believe the strongest evidence is up next.
A Change of Intent
We know that Togashi was considering having Hisoka kill Machi after his fight with Chrollo, but he decided it would be “more interesting to keep her alive.”
“Hisoka was supposed to kill Machi after the fight, but I dismissed the idea. There were many things to take into account, and I had the feeling that leaving Machi alive would make it more interesting later on.”   – YOSHIHIRO TOGASHI, HUNTER X HUNTER VOL. 34
This decision was made shortly after he emphasized Sun and Moon’s post-mortem Nen and the death of stolen abilities’ users. It was made in the same chapter he killed off Shalnark and Kortopi. Remember that Machi is not supposed to die according to Neon’s prophecies. It would seem Togashi’s mindset going into this decision was heavily influenced by thoughts of post-mortem Nen and the implications of the Troupe members’ deaths.
I propose he decided to keep Machi alive after considering whether Chrollo still had Neon’s ability, what it would mean if he didn’t, and the significance of her fortunes coming true.
An Increase in Post-Mortem Nen
In addition to Sun and Moon, the Succession Arc marks an exponential increase in the frequency of post-mortem Nen. We see this with Spirit Beasts, Hisoka’s resurrection, Camilla’s guards, Benjamin’s stars, and more. It wouldn’t be out of place for Neon to possess post-mortem Nen as well. Much of Hunter x Hunter seems to be shifting toward themes of death and resurrection, spiritual fulfillment, and curses.
With six months gone the year is cursed.
On that note, could Togashi be planning to recontextualize this line to refer to Neon’s post-mortem Nen?
The Ability’s Name
In this case, Lovely Ghostwriter becomes a double entendre. It already kind of was, but now even moreso.
LOVELY GHOSTWRITER: POST-MORTEM MECHANICS
Lovely Ghostwriter is 100% accurate.
Events referenced in the poem are typically present as metaphors.
The post-mortem abilities of Lovely Ghostwriter apply retroactively.
Remember that Nen is still an extension of one’s will. This new version of Lovely Ghostwriter is potentially consistent with Neon’s mental state before her death, and her desire to reclaim her prophetic abilities, and by extension the funds for her flesh collection.
I agree with many other readers that the Phantom Troupe’s main rival is shifting from Kurapika to Hisoka, but a post-mortem Neon, acting as a karmic force against Chrollo, will also have a hand in the Troupe’s downfall.
There’s a lot of irony in the idea of Neon possessing post-mortem Nen. She doesn’t believe in an afterlife, while Chrollo does. Spirits are a focus of Togashi’s previous work, Yu Yu Hakusho. Oftentimes these spirits act as karmic arbiters, and I believe Lovely Ghostwriter is no different.
THE PROPHECIES, UNFULFILLED
The Spider is Cut in Half
“Though cut in half, shall be your number ‘Tis not lost, wherein your advantage lies.”
The spider will be cut in half, by death or some other means. However, it’s unclear at which point in time this tally begins. It could be before Uvo’s death, as the Troupe originally speculates.
Tumblr media
If Hisoka counts, having left the Troupe, then Shizuku would be the only death remaining (see next section). If he doesn’t, Feitan or Phinks should have to die too.
However, the tally could also begin after Neon’s death. This would mean Uvo does not count (nor does Hisoka), but Shalnark and Kortopi do. You also have two new possibilities, Kalluto and Illumi, that can be removed from the Troupe in some way. This is more in line with Hisoka’s statement of “10 more remaining”.
Shizuku’s Death
“In the chamber of treasure ill gotten There is no choice but endless sleep. Your greatest fear should solitude be Lest upon your lonesome form he creep.”
Shizuku will be alone with one other individual in the Black Whale’s treasure room. That person will reveal themselves to be Hisoka in disguise. I suspect he will remove texture surprise to reveal his badly burned face, consistent with the horror style of the Succession Arc.
Hisoka’s Second Half
“On the day of the sun under this customer’s care Alone with a man of cross reversed Removed from the calendar is the false hair With six months gone the year is cursed.”
Arguably, this didn’t come true in Yorknew City. This could be resolved in a lot of different ways. Could mean Kalluto dies. Could mean Chrollo kills Hisoka. I don’t know. It’s worth remembering Neon’s fortunes are highly metaphorical and may be resolved in unexpected ways.
Unrevealed Quatrains
There are some portions of the fortunes that were not shown, specifically Chrollo and Nobunaga’s later quatrains. I’m inclined to believe Hisoka’s fortune was longer too. It’s possible these fortunes will come back.
Hunter x Hunter Chapter 104 - September 4th (3)
Finally back !!!!!!
I missed liveblogging HxH
Now I have the volumes up to volume 15
I’ll never catch up before Togashi comes back but anyway my goal is still to rediscover Hunter x Hunter through the manga and the volumes as I have read the chapters post anime.
Anyway Volume 12 BEGINS
Tumblr media
Very simplistic cover but I perfectly understand not wanting to draw a very detailed cover with 13 characters
Also with the reference to this cover in one of the latest manga covers. I like it even more
I’ll just mention the name that change spelling in the french translation
Bonorenof, Uvôguine, Korutopi, Kuroro, Sharnalk
I guess main differences are that japanese r,l is in-between french r and french l and so it tends to get switched up. Especially since french r is harder than french l and it’s kinda the opposite in English.
Anyway sorry, I haven’t studied phonetics so it’s probably just very random
It seems this whole volume covers September 4th
I know GI is auctioned on the 11th
Tumblr media
Nobunaga is 28 and his birthday is in 4 cannonic days
nice
I would also be confused if a longtime friend asked this
Tumblr media
PREDICTION TIME
Tumblr media
Really good translation by the way
In french they kept the chrysanthemum analogy and explain how it’s linked to the ancient spelling of their month
Tumblr media
I think dying alone is a terrifying prediction, especially in such a gloomy place
I’m really not fond of the theory that they’ll never escape those predictions because I feel like one of the main themes of this arc is to escape your own destiny
Unless all those advice and warnings have not purpose
Tumblr media
Shizuku is so smart
and yep you’d die for a massacre you didn’t commit but it’s not like you’re very innocent yourself Shizuku
Tumblr media
I doubt Kurapika would die but finally some people remember the Kurta
Tumblr media
Moving on will prove harder than anticipated
Tumblr media
Good luck Kurapika
I still love that emoji
Hello! What do you think about this scene?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How do you think, was he crying about Kite only or was it about what he did as well?
I just can't help it, but this scene reminds me so much of this one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So how do you think, could he be sharing his grief here with the person he killed - Pitou?
Or was it only about Kite?
I think we’re gonna re-traumatize the fanbase with these panels, haha.
OK, but more seriously... in general I think Gon is someone who decides based on his own judgement whether someone is a friend or a foe, and not on social standards.
So Killua, who is an assassin (and therefore a murderer) but kind to Gon, is a friend.  And Zepile, who is an art forger (and therefore a criminal) but kind to Gon, is a friend.  Also Meleoran, who is a Chimera Ant - and therefore an enemy - but approaches Gon first seeking an alliance, is a comrade.
Gon’s lack of preconceived notions and unconventional morality is something a lot of the other characters comment on, it comes out of his personality of trusting his instincts (the enhancer thing again), and from growing up basically running free with the animals on Whale Island.
And it might come out of a general lack of self-regard too.... if you recall, he doesn’t hold grudges even against people who are actively hurting him (Hanzo), if his instincts otherwise say he can trust them.
Tumblr media
He’s not even mad when Meleoran tells him that he’s an inhuman beast!  Hahaha.
The couple times Gon does take a strong stance against a bunch of thieves and murderers - like with the Phantom Troupe panels you posted - he seems mainly motivated by loyalty.  Those are Kurapika’s enemies, and Kurapika is Gon’s friend, therefore they are Gon’s enemies as well.  And similarly with Illumi - Illumi hurt Killua, and Killua is Gon’s friend, therefore Gon is now against Illumi (and the rest of the Zoldyck family, by extension).
The fact that Gon isn’t automatically on the side of the humans against the Chimera Ants is something Kite specifically comments on... as a warning,  that he should harden his heart, because any hesitation in combat will get him killed.
Tumblr media
And Gon respects Kite, so he takes him at his word and does exactly that... kills without hestitation (I think in the very next chapter).
Sidenote, but it’s a slog to reread the early Chimera Ant chapters... it all seems intentional now, that the purpose is to set them up as inhuman only to reveal later that they’re more human than we thought.  But there’s so many meaningless battles with grunts at the start of this arc, it’s really set up as a training arc for Gon and Killua, with gradually raising stakes, and because it’s a training arc we’re encouraged (at first) to ignore the violence and bodycount.  Also I remember the frustration of following this part from week to week in Shounen Jump, haha, when Togashi was so sick he was basically confined to bed, but still (mostly) meeting the weekly publication deadlines, and the art was just storyboard scribbles.
...Having said all of that, while Gon is the kind of person who wouldn’t automatically close his heart to someone just because of what they’ve done in the past (before he met them), I really don’t think he’s crying for Pitou in the panels you posted.
The confrontation with Pitou is set up pretty far in advance, and how much Gon hates Pitou is set up pretty far in advance too, to the point where (like in the panels you posted) Gon can’t square the cognitive dissonance that comes from seeing Pitou doing something unexpected - using their ability, the same one they used to turn Kite into a zombie, to heal Komugi.
Because of what happened to Kite, he’s been trying this whole time to follow Kite’s advice to view ALL the Chimera Ants, but specifically Pitou, as enemies, and to strike to kill without hesitation. So he has a lot of turmoil when he assesses the situation in the palace, and it’s not what he expected.
Some foreshadowing scenes:
Tumblr media
When Morel asks him to show his animosity towards Pitou (and this reaction, plus the fact that he immediately snaps out of it, is what convinces Morel to bring him along - “just the right amount of lunacy” he says).
Tumblr media
When Morel explains that even when Gon doesn’t seem intense... he’s still intense.
So I would say, while there’s some parallels with the Phantom Troupe, it’s not that Gon has changed his mind about Pitou, the hated enemy he came all the way to East Gorteau to kill (by his own hands). The parallel is more along the lines that he is angered, just like he was with the phantom torupe, by the thought that Pitou could care about someone else (the king) when he didn’t care about Kite.
And his anger is on behalf of his friend and mentor, Kite, who was killed, just like his anger at the Phantom Troupe is really on behalf of his friend Kurapika and his anger at Illumi is really on behalf of his friend Killua.
****
As for the tears, I think they show that the momentary madness that Morel comments on - “just the right amount of lunacy” - has passed, and the child Gon who’s basically a good kid and upset about the death of his mentor (the first time so far that someone close to him has died) has returned.  He was crying just before he summoned all of his power, and he’s crying again afterward.
Tumblr media
I mean, even the angle of his head and everything is the same, I think we’re really supposed to draw the connection between child Gon in this panel and adult Gon in the panel you posted, crying while looking at his big adult hands.
I can understand your thought process though, looking at your hands is a kind of visual shorthand for - What have I done?  With these hands?
But again I don’t think the sadness here is a specifically - what have I done?  To  Pitou.  Pitou not only killed Kite, but was about to kill Gon... I really doubt Gon changed his mind about them at all.  If anything he was probably even more determined before, because they’d lied to him about being able to heal Kite in the first place:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I think the manga is actually pretty clear here... Pitou lied, and because they lied Gon (whatever other turmoil he might have felt before this) was able to kill them without reservations.
***
Looking at his hands after he struck the first blow might be a what have I done?  With the nen contract I just made, though, where he’s realizing he just gave up his entire future for a revenge that didn’t bring Kite back to life.
In other words even if your cause is righteous and your anger is just, and you’ve just killed someone who did deserve to die (not saying that’s the case with Pitou but this was pretty much a forced situation- it was Pitou or him), it doesn’t mean you’ll feel better afterward.
This just seems like a standard story about how revenge doesn’t solve all your problems, you know?  If you remember, Kurapika was also depressed after he found out the spiders were dead, instead of being happy they were gone.  And Gon back then thought Kurapika shouldn’t be so focused on revenge, but more focused on pursuing his next goal to collect all the eyes. Kurapika just like Gon is giving up his whole future for revenge, the only difference is it’s happening in slow motion and not all at one.   If we’re talking about parallels, there’s another parallel with Kurapika and Gon too.
Tumblr media
But it’s easier to give advice when you, personally, aren’t so emotionally affected.  It’s much harder to follow the advice you give to others.
Yoshihiro Togashi 10 comic strips
H☆S Award: Yoshihiro Togashi's Advice
I gathered Togashi's ten "4-koma" that he drew during the Yu Yu Hakusho serialization in a single post.
The Hop Step Award - H☆S was the Weekly Shounen Jump newcomer manga award aimed at young up-and-coming manga artists. In 1987, Togashi won the 24th H☆S Award Honorable Mention for his work "Jura no Mizuki". Togashi was also one of the judges of Eiichiro Oda's H☆S Award in 1993.
1991
In 1991, during the Four Holy Beasts and Rescue Yukina's Arcs, Togashi drew those five 4-koma to give the H☆S Award participants some advice on how to become a manga artist. He talked about his first works and awards he got, before creating Yu Yu Hakusho.
In 1992, during the Dark Tournament Arc, Togashi drew more five 4-koma to give the H☆S participants advice on creating manga. He used as plot the five opposing teams of Team Urameshi: Rokuyukai, Dr. Ichigaki, Mashoutsukai, Uraotogi and Toguro.
The "Alien N" mentioned in these comic strips is a manga lover from Tenteke Star who lives in Togashi's head. He wrote about him in the Yu Yu Hakusho comics volumes 8 and 9 (scans in this post).
HXH TALKPOST [by HXHANJO]: № 1
Tumblr media
One of the things I love most about HxH is the representation of esotericism in its entirety. The Nen is nothing more than energy, which springs from the True Will according to Thelema, and as well as the flow of will and subfrequencies said in the anime itself.
Tumblr media
There are five types of Nen, in a system where the spirit is at the center, the wheel of Nen is like as the Seal of Solomon. This symbols is also a former part of the medieval esotericism in Europe.
Thus we see in HxH a clear representation of seals. The star of David did not become a religious symbol out of nothing, but has its origins as the Seal of Solomon, he used that symbolism of protection by wearing it under the form of a ring. Solomon is also associato at the practice of the magic as Goethia/Goezia - the old Gods called daemon are goetian spirits that gives advice and help the magus. The Star of David is the union of the spiritual and material and is a seal of protection, as evidenced by the fact that Solomon used this seal for his own as well.
Therefore, both Killua the Illumi use this symbol as a good omen. I've read many time people thought they was Jewish just because is shows the Solomon seal with them, but isn't about religion itself. In the 1999 version, the seal was a Pentacle; it have the same function.
Togashi have surely integrated purposely many esoteric easter eggs, especially If people know about these stuff is easy to spot these differences. HxH in particular is a interesting piece about buddhism too, but we gonna talk about it another time.
345 log
there is a Lot happening on this first page, but the most important piece of information isn’t even in the viz version. ging tells gon that wanting more (trying to restore his nen) would risk bringing down a curse or divine punishment on him
the way gon would have ignored this advice if it came from wing 💔 he and izunavi should have a support group
when gon says “maybe i wasn’t cut out to be a son,” he’s talking about being mito’s son. mito makes the same comparison (like father like son in putting family second) in chapter 1, which gon accepts. togashi makes it even more explicit in an interview saying that gon “abandoned” mito because he has “the blood of his father.” which just seems unfair to gon, but you can see how he would think that after repeatedly being likened to someone his mother disparages
whatever legal exemptions gon was granted as a hunter must be still in force, but he’s being serious about considering options without nen
love that ging made the whole expedition team wait on him while he talked to gon, presumably with no explanation
while ging says those at the hideout became hunters specifically for this expedition, the same can’t be true of the other ~200, given how few people pass in a year
pariston drops polite forms when thinking (naturally lol) but doesn’t stop using boku
tserriednich literally does say fashion and f*cking: ファッションとファッ〇
it’s the IPA director who threatens cheadle if she lets beyond escape, just the IPA (not the V5 directly) was the one to contract the HA in the first place
permission, qualifications, the means, a contract: the same prerequisites ging tells gon about on world tree
people assume that kurapika’s been in yorknew, but that’s where the auction was held, not where the nostrade family is based. wherever kurapika works, it’s within driving distance of swaldani
do you still have faith in killugon becoming canon? (i am holding on to every strand of hope at this point and i’m extremely scared, especially since i want a killugon reunion so bad and i want killugon to be canon really bad. i love your blog by the way! it’s one of the things keeping me afloat right now 😭)
I haven't lost hope! It makes me sad to see people assuming this means there's no chance now and it's over, as that's definitely not what I'm taking away from it. I do think it throws a bit more uncertainty into the mix than we had before, but at the same time, now we know he's not planning to end it like ending D in the manga itself. That ending (and I assume anything all that similar) has been ruled out from the pool of possibilities for the actual manga's future.
I still definitely think he intends to give us a reunion between Gon and Killua, there are many reasons why I think this is a reasonable thing to assume will happen.
As for it being canon, even though I think his inclusion of the queer themes in the series is absolutely intentional, I've never been confident that it'll become undeniably, full-on canon. It could happen, but I've always considered that possibility somewhat unlikely (as much as I would love that, and I do still think there's a chance of it happening even now). I still think the more reasonable expectation is that it might become ambiguously/arguably canon/be presented in a way where those of us who want that outcome can easily see it that way, and those who don't can imagine the rejected ending if that's what they want (haha).
I would be lying if I didn't say I have mixed feelings about this whole development, I definitely do, but the only thing it really rules out in the series itself is...the rejected ending. We don't know what his other three ideas are at all, for all we know every single one of them could be gay wedding endings. (This is a joke, for the record, but I mean, that is the level of uncertainty we're working with here.)
So, for those of us who love Gon and Killua's relationship, my advice is to keep loving it and enjoying it, and not assume ending D tells us what Togashi is really planning. If it told us much of anything about his actual plans, he wouldn't have told it to us. Of course I can't guarantee anything about what we'll get in the real ending, assuming we do get to see it, but all the subtext and everything we've noticed about it still exists, it hasn't gone anywhere. He could still make it canon, semi-canon, or give us an ending where we can reasonably imagine that they get together after it, a rejected ending doesn't get in the way of that. And no matter what happens in canon, you can still love the ship and headcanon whatever you want, which is one of the great things about fandom.
Tag game
tag 9 people you would like to know better or catch up with! I was tagged by @subdee thank you!
last song: I’m currently wondering through the magical universe of Spotify (which was recently introduced in my country), so nothing in particular, but my current on-repeat is Cults - Always forever because of this HxH edit. I’m stuck in this fandom :) In this regard, I’m also checking HxH fanosts and a German band Poems for Jamiro, some songs remind me of HxH, for example Heartbeat (Kurapika) and Never get home (Killugon).
last movie: Nothing fresh. I saw the Wizard of Oz and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire while in bed processing side-effects of vaccination. Goblet of Fire is underrated. Before this I watched Mata Hari (1931 film), it broke my heart. The real biography of Mata Hari dancer was even more tragic, and the main couple was played by Greta Garbo and Ramon Novarro - both closeted lgbtq+. Black and white films are great: Hollywood and European cinema were different but they both broadcast a hypnotic intellectuality and a soothing therapeutic effect.
currently watching: I recently wached Marvelous Mrs Maisel and it’s brilliant. The third season was the most powerful IMAO. As for the anime, it’s Yu Yu Hakusho (episode 23 out of 118?). It’s kinda outdated, the early episodes are boring due to many battles, but I remember that Togashi was under pressure from the editors despite the fact that his storytelling was obviously better than battle scenes. So I’ll continue to watch in the strong hope of better arcs. I admire Togashi’s brilliant consistency in his ideas and ideals, they stay the same but you can see how they develop in his future works. Similarly, HxH characters keep psychological features and cores from old characters. HxH is a giant leap forward. Togashi is always learning, improving and staying faithful to himself.
currently reading: Ingmar Bergman’s memoirs “Laterna Magica” (“the Magic Lantern”). Bergman was a Swedish film director, one of the best in the 20th century. His life was f***d up from the beginning due to toxic family upbringing. All siblings had to follow radical religious dogmas and wrong psychological advice from child doctors. And so this boy grew up into a pinned voodoo doll and went on destroying other people’s lives, incapable of love, unable to heal. He recovered eventually but his films got more experimental, absorbing his darkness and creative genius like a sponge. Surprisingly, his films were always kind, filled with so much compassion. And he filmed women like men - his female leads had deep characterisation, long close-ups of faces, open sexuality. I think this book is hard to understand if you are not an artist yourself, and it’s difficult to read if you are mentally sensitive. But it’s good for those, who had a difficult childhood and are striving to become successful in their career.
currently craving: SEMLA. It is served in Scandinavia from end-Jan to mid-Feb! We don’t have it on sale, but if these delightful deadly cream bombs show up in any bakery or cafe in another city - I’ll go there. Cheaper than to fly to Sweden, which is on lockdown anyway, duh.
Tagging @buzzykrueger @emperorthighs, @little-lonely-flower, @telehxhtrash! Only if you want to!
Little tought about the succession war
We already Have the survivor princes ?
🚨 THIS IS JUST A TOUGHT OF MINE AND WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TOGASHI SENSEI WILL DO FOR THE NEXT CHAPTERS 🚨
Tumblr media
Hello! Today i want to share a tought about the succession war that's currently taking place in HxH. As you can note, Togashi sensei always put 3 specific princes together ( In order ): Fugetsu, Mariyam and Woble are always put in a "group of their own",in the manga, in riepilogations, official illustrations and also in the shikishi. It can mean something ? Maybe no. Or maybe yes. Maybe, and i still say Maybe:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Obivously i hope like everybody that Fugetsu will feel better after what we saw in ch.400. I also hypothize that maybe she know that kacho is a spirit beast now and maybe she will give her some advice for the future events.
• Probably they can also create an Alliance with Oito/Woble, due also to melody and kurapika, as i think that we can even get that Finally Fugetsu will rebel to her mother and along with Kacho, Ilardia, ladiolus and melody will move away. Also i'm sure she will be protective and fond of Woble and will do anything to protect her ( in think she will do so for ANY Child ❤).
• We can count that if they will start move on their own, maybe also Fu will stars a " Consulence Tour" along kacho,melody or some guards, to see some princes (a situation like Oito's meeting with Zhang Lei ).
• i also think that maybe the Final match will resolve in a Two factions war ( some by Tserriednich's side and some by Fu as candidates for the throne Obivously i imagine woble, mariyam and maybe also Tyson by Fu's side while Camilla and benjamin by Tserri's. Halken and Tubeppa are the most unpredictable, since tubeppa has pratically found a sort of link for an Alliance with both Tserri and Woble, But i still think that there's good in Halken. )
• In way or another there will be a huge caos ( Maybe because of Morena, Hisoka, the Phantom Troupe or all together), that will put the main boat ( the luxury one ) in danger. This probably will get at a mess that major part of the remaining princes will be murdered ( between themselves or by the mess happening. ) at some point, they will discover the chamber where momoze is ( maybe the Kakin tree and it's secret will be discovered.). By realizing what's going on, the dead princes are put in there, including Nasubi's half brothers ( yes. Them. I also think that Morena is the most dangerous and i think she will also survive), killed during the mess. For me at least for what i think, it will happen a really sad but fundamental Moment. A container must be filled. And there's still the Trolley Problem. Which is choosing between the other princes or the people of the kingdom. Maybe the great tree of Kakin will be a very important fact to what's happening. And that's the point. I think that, to allow the tree's Role to be complied, Halkenburg will sacrifice himself. In a high note, he will ask fugetsu to shot him, so that with him the great tree of Kakin will be complete. Is obivous that she won't, but he will told her that this is necessary for the kingdom and everybody else ( trolley problem ), and he's sure that she will be the one kakin needs to reach the future he wanted to create himself. So, the act has to be done. The thing will be on her conscience for many long, but it has to be worth for the kingdom.
• and so, after everything is done, is probably that she will became the monarch. And i think that she will save Woble and Mariyam. They're children. They shouldn't pay the price.
in short words, Fugetsu, Mariyam and Woble will be the ONLY SURVIVORS of the succession war.
Is also probably that the spirit beasts will disappear after everybody will leave the ship. I also imagine, after the post shot breakdown, while trying to reach the life boats in a situation Titanic style, kacho will reassure Fu, by tolding her that there will be so many people that will be near her and that will never leave her alone, also admitting that she is also capable to show strenght, and that everything will be worth it. All with the chef's kiss of her pushing her twin with both hands on the back foward. Towards the future. While she has disappeard. I also imagine how Fu will watch Back by see that nobody's there, as she smiles bittersweetly While starting to run. I also think that both Kurapika and few members of the Spiders, and like i said before also morena, will survive too, and the final fight probably will be Kept for the final arc.
So.. that's it. I make you remember that this is only a tought of mine and we don't know what Togashi sensei will do for the next chapters.
