The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805 [1] c. 1905-08
One of a series of five paintings depicting the events of the Battle of Trafalgar. Following Nelson's orders, the 'Royal Sovereign' led by Collingwood was to enter the battle at right angles, rather than broadside in an attempt to swiftly 'decapitate' the enemy's navy. This was an unusual and risky tactic. Here, the 'Royal Sovereign' breaks the enemy's line and passes the stern of the Spanish flagship, 'Santa Anna'. On the left in the foreground is the Spanish two-decker 'San Justo' and on the right a column of English battleships ready to enter the engagement.
The group was possibly painted c. 1905, around the time of the battle's centenary, and it is unusual in de Martino's oeuvre, as these are the only historical scenes by him. De Martino's contemporaries, Thomas Jacques Somerscales and William Wyllie had both portrayed the event in the 1890s (Somerscales painting c. 1894, in the Government Art Collection). However, it was perhaps an appropriate reminder of one the greatest naval victories at a time when there was rising unease at the threat of war with Germany, and plans to build a Home Fleet.
In 1910 the paintings remained unsold and de Martino sent a round robin letter stating his wish that the Nation should have his 'life of Nelson paintings'. A response was sent on behalf of the King saying he would like to help, but couldn't quite see a way to realise this. On October 30th 1912, following de Martino's death, George V's Private Secretary, Lord Stamfordham reported that he had visited the artist's widow at her late husband's studio presumably to view the paintings. Isabel de Martino insisted that the paintings were only to be sold all together. On the 6 February 1913 she wrote to Lord Stamfordham…' I am pleased to accept your offer, about my husband's pictures. From the first, I told you how happy I was to feel that the King would have the Trafalgar pictures… I accept the offer of Twelve thousand guineas for the 7 pictures, the series of the 5 pictures of the battle of Trafalgar and, 1 of the Nile; 1 of the battle of St Vincent.'
George V's diary records that on Sunday 9 March, 1913: 'In the afternoon we went with David & Mary to Martino's studio and his widow and daughter showed us all his pictures.'
Purchased by King George V from the artist’s widow, February 1913

Friday 19th October - Shorts out again!
What a shame that we were not collected for our drive to Valparaiso until 11am today, we had already exhausted our options in Santiago where one day would have been more than enough, and have a busy day and a half once we reach our next destination with a city tour this afternoon and a full day cooking course tomorrow before we move on again leaving no time to explore on our own! Once we got on the road the trip was interesting, we passed through a huge flat valley, the Casablanca region, which was clearly an important arable area with huge swathes of crops followed by more hilly areas where we started to see large vineyards. The route also takes you through the mountain tunnels in two places and at the beginning of springtime showcases many bright and beautiful flowers along the sides of the road, after a 2 hour drive we arrived at the coastal town of Valparaiso, Chile’s second largest city, a World heritage Site and the country’s major port, which is made up of 45 hills that look out to sea with stunning vistas and colourful architecture. The hilly terrain here makes the use of funicular transport a necessity, there are 15 stations around the city although currently only 7 are in operation due to repairs, this is something that must take some time as the near vertical tracks must need regular maintenance to ensure safety.
Our hotel is tucked away in a small street way above the coastline, the building was once owned by a 19th century English sailor and artist, Thomas Somerscales, it has been restored and redecorated in period style into an 8 bedroom boutique hotel as is beautiful. A short walk outside, in the very warm sunshine, brought us immediately into the colourful streets typical of this city with brightly coloured properties, many with murals and lots of flowers. Our guide, Christian collected us as planned and we were driven to the most famous house in the city, La Sebastiana, the home of the famous Nobel Prize winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda where we took a guided tour around the small but very quirky house with outstanding views of the surrounding city and the sea. From here we commenced a walking tour taking in several of the different neighbourhoods of the city. Although mainly a walking tour we did a short trip on the trolley bus, it is always good to get to use the local transport system and we managed to tick off most modes today,
A tour of Valparaiso inevitably takes in the street art that can be seen on almost every street here in the city, one of the most impressive areas is the outdoor museum found in Bellavista where a large number works can be seen, most are unsigned but a number of famous graffiti artists have distinct styles enabling recognition of their work. The scale of the art from small pieces to the complete sides of huge tower blocks are overwhelming and add a real bohemian feel to the city. Any tour around this city also involves many steps as there are virtually no flat areas above the port level, you would certainly be fit if you lived here! Our guide, using his 3rd language of English, explained in detail the history behind many of the buildings in the city, a large number of which have been rebuilt over the years due to a number of devastating earthquakes that have occurred in the city, newer buildings are now built to earthquake standard but this was not always the case, especially where architects from Europe had been used.
We visited a number of historic buildings including the Catholic Valparaíso Cathedral, the Baburizza Palace which was built as a family home by a rich Salt-peter mine owner from the north but was never lived in by him due to a collapse in the industry and was subsequently sold as a residence to a couple with no family who gifted it to the city upon their death, the building with its showy copper roof is now the Museum of Fine Arts. The Plaza Sotomayor houses the Chilean Naval HQ as well as a huge naval memorial depicting scenes from the great naval battles of the past. At one time the sea used to be this far inland but after one of the powerful earthquakes the stones from the destroyed buildings were used to reclaim land from the sea and the coastline now stands some distance from this square which also houses another art museum and one of the three large fire stations found in the city, all of which are manned by retained firefighters. We walked along a wide avenue at the base of the hills where some of the gifts given to the city for their 100 years of independence from Spain in 1910 were displayed; a large Marble Arch from the UK, the naval statue from France which unfortunately in corporates the wrong ‘Chilean National Animals’ on it and Germany promised a huge fountain, however, when told of the position for its installation next to the UK Arch decided to give it to the city of Santiago instead! The HQ of Chilean National Congress was moved to the city from Santiago in 1990 by General Pinochet to Valparaíso as he preferred this town to the capital and it remains here to this day. We had booked at meal at La Conception Restaurant, close to our hotel where we had an excellent meal overlooking the sea.
