The Grand Canyon and Beyond- The Ultimate 7-Day Itinerary in Northern Arizona & Southern Utah
For those who are visiting The Grand Canyon, it is an unforgettable experience. For those looking to explore more of the region, we've put together this itinerary with a 7-day-and-a-half excursion that will take you through Zion National Park, into Northern Arizona and Southern Utah to check out some hiking in Bryce Canyon City, take a boat ride on Lake Powell and visit the Antelope Canyon."
The Grand Canyon is one of America's most popular tourist destinations. Located within Arizona and Utah states with a total length of 277 miles (446 km), it is home to more than 10 miles (16 km) of towering cliffs along its rim. The canyon was created by the Colorado River, which carved away massive layers of rock over time to reveal the red, orange and pink coloured walls. The canyon is estimated to be anywhere between 3.2 to 6 million years old.
The Grand Canyon's website states that there are five ways visitors can experience this magnificent attraction:
● Standard tours on foot or by mule, self-guided mule and hiking trails, jeep tours
● Biking and off-road tours
● Helicopter Tours
If you are visiting for only a day or two, it would be a good idea to take one of the standards or self-guided tour routes. The standard route will take visitors to the most popular canyon points, including Guano Point, Yavapai Observation Station, Hermit's Rest and Mather Point.
The self-guided tours are great for those who want a more personalized experience and are willing to walk approximately 5 miles (8 km) along the rim. Another option is to book a helicopter tour. Helicopter flightseeing tours have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their convenience.
Day 1: Las Vegas to Grand Canyon National Park
Las Vegas is a great place to start your Grand Canyon adventure, as it is just a short flight from most major cities across the country, including Phoenix and Los Angeles. From Old Town Scottsdale, it's about an hour's drive to the airport for your flight. We suggest leaving around 9:00 am to allow enough time for check-in and rush hour traffic from the airport into Las Vegas. Pull out your guide to see what the day has in store!
Arrive at the airport and check-in. Allow time to get through security and drop off your luggage. Once you reach the baggage claim area of the terminal, a shuttle bus will take you directly to the Old Town Shuttle. You can ride this shuttle directly to your hotel or apartment or continue on foot. The shuttle will leave every 15-20 minutes throughout your stay until 5:00 pm.
Once you reach downtown, grab a drink at one of the casinos on Fremont Street for a bit of pre-planning and socialization with fellow tourists before settling into your room for the night.
Remember to bring your passport, camera and electronics into the room since you won't have access until check-out. If you're staying at one of the Las Vegas Resorts, it is possible to book tours in advance (in addition to activities at the resort) so make sure to check with the concierge desk in your hotel to see what's available.
Day 2: In and around Las Vegas
Today is a day of rest, as not much exciting stuff is happening in Las Vegas. If you are staying downtown, there are many fun things to do, including exploring vintage stores and shopping along Fremont Street. Don't forget to visit one of the casino poker rooms. If you are staying at a different hotel, allow some time for driving and exploring along the way.
Once you have had some time to explore, check out the Neon Museum for some of the most iconic Vegas signs and buildings. The museum is open daily from 10:00 am until midnight but note that it does close on Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.
If you're staying in Las Vegas, check out Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, where you can take in an old film from 1955 about a traveling pawn shop with plenty of history! Another fun place to visit is The Neon Museum, housed within The Fremont Street Experience shopping mall.
If you need to recharge your batteries, head to the Fremont East district for a relaxing day near the city center. The outdoor mall here is a great place to experience amazing views of the Vegas Strip and relax with a cocktail.
After a day of shopping, casinos and exploring, ensure you get permission from your hotel desk to check out the live music at The Palms Las Vegas or host your house party on Fremont Street.
Check out some popular lounges: El Cortez, Lavo, Wynn Las Vegas and Palazzo. For more intimate entertainment experiences, check out Voodoo Lounge, located at the Cromwell Hotel and Casino.
After a day of lounging and entertainment, you'll be good to go for dinner at one of the area's popular restaurants. We recommend The Tom Colicchio Restaurant at the Mirage, Emeril's New Orleans Fish House, or any of the restaurants at The Golden Nugget.
Day 3: Las Vegas to Grand Canyon South Rim
Today you have many options for traveling to the South Rim. You can fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, stay overnight and then commute to the canyon in your rental car. Flying into Phoenix makes getting around much easier than driving from Las Vegas. It is also less expensive than flying into Las Vegas and then taking a shuttle bus to the South Rim. It is a little more expensive than flying directly into Las Vegas, but in our opinion, it is the better option.
Take the Light Rail train from Phoenix Airport to Roosevelt Station, approximately one mile from the airport. Walk or rent a bicycle and head to Grand Canyon West (a few blocks away) for your first night in the park.
If you decide to fly into Las Vegas, please note that all luggage must be checked at a terminal, not on McCarran International Airport's end. Most hotels have direct transportation options for checking your bags without leaving town if you are staying downtown. The other
option is to take the shuttle bus to the South Rim of the canyon, where you can stay overnight in one of the many historic lodges and sleep under the starry skies.
Safely arrive at Grand Canyon National Park and check in to your hotel. You might want to spend the afternoon taking some pictures from the rim or take a helicopter tour over the canyon until sunset.
It's best to reserve your helicopter tour in advance; there is limited space for this popular activity. A popular option is to book the Twilight Tour (a 3:00 pm departure) or the Sunset Tour (a 4:00 pm departure). These tours are also popular; most tours fill up a few weeks in advance.
Day 4: Grand Canyon South Rim
Today is the day to explore the Grand Canyon – a big place! Make sure you check out our Top Attractions at the Grand Canyon and have some time to stop by the Visitor Centre, which has a lot of great insight into the natural history of this amazing place.
Your options for exploring are endless. Plenty of hiking trails, nature walks, and scenic drives will keep your memories fresh for years to come. There is also the option of booking a helicopter tour or taking a trip to the Tusayan Ruins.
If you want your trip to be a little more memorable, book one of our trips to the Grand Canyon South Rim and enjoy one of the most incredible theme parks on your trip!
Day 5: Return to Las Vegas
Today is your last full day in Las Vegas, so ensure you get everything you need to pack up before flying out at some point that evening.
Make sure you check out the Fremont Street Experience – it is a one-of-a-kind Las Vegas experience and is one of our favorite parts of the city.
Take in some of the Fremont Street sites before returning to your hotel. If you have time, head to the Mirage or New York-New York for some fun at their casinos.
Finally, if you have time before your flight home, try some poker! We recommend stopping by the World Series of Poker tournament room in the Mirage or the Golden Nugget at The Cromwell Hotel & Casino.
We recommend visiting the Fremont Street Experience again if you have time. It's a great way to experience a piece of Vegas history and learn more about this iconic part of the city's past.

Day 5. Right after Bearizona we drove up to The Grand Canyon. This was the one thing I had requested we do above all on our drive out. Pictures do not do it justice at all. When we approached the rim we were silent for about 15 minutes. We couldn’t form words on how beautiful the canyon was. It’s something that needs to be experienced in person. Jodi and I climbed down to an edge and dared to get to the edge to get some epic shots. Thanks to a few fellow hikers for getting a shot of us together.
Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb, that’s where the fruit is.
