Mysterious Lotus Casebook and Complex PTSD Representations: Part I
One of my favorite things about Mysterious Lotus Casebook is how surprisingly nuanced and unusual its portrayal of complex PTSD is. So many shows either introduce character trauma to make the character Sad and Brooding, Angry and Violent (if they’re a villain) or Hesitant to Start a Relationship (if it’s a romance), and that’s usually as in-depth as it gets. If they address the unique after effects of child abuse that lead to complex PTSD at all, it’s usually either explain why a character is a homicidal monster (which is all sorts of problematic) or it’s limited to a single phobia, which can be overcome by the Power of Love, or it’s just something that crops up occasionally for Plot and then forgotten about the rest of the time.
Mysterious Lotus Casebook gives us two deeply traumatized characters–Li Lianhua and Di Feisheng–who each have clear symptoms of complex PTSD, and yet, their cPTSD manifests completely differently because of the types of traumas that caused it and their relationships to the people causing the traumas. And their manifestations of cPTSD affect just about every level of their being, including their sense of self, their decision-making, and their relationships with others, and it includes some of the incredibly important manifestations of cPTSD that are almost never shown in media while avoiding the most insulting stereotypes!
PTSD vs cPTSD
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder caused by experiencing a single (or short lived) traumatic event (an accident, assault, medical emergency, fighting in a war, etc), where the symptoms last for longer than a month. Symptoms include things like reexperiencing the event (flashbacks), avoidance (of things related to the event), changes in mood (depression, anger, fear, etc), and issues with emotional regulation (hypervigilance–being constantly on the lookout for threats–irritability/angry outbursts, etc.).
Complex PTSD happens if someone has experienced long term, chronic/repeated trauma that induces hopelessness and no chance of escape (survivors of extended child abuse, human trafficking, domestic violence, prisoners of war, slavery, etc.). It’s also often interpersonal in ways a car crash or medical emergency is not, and is particularly linked with chronic trauma during childhood: chronic stress hormones introduce literal physical changes in a growing brain, particularly the amygdala (which processes fear), hippocampus (which is responsible for learning/memory), and the prefrontal cortex (which is responsible for executive function), so it can affect every aspect of life and also affect a child’s progression through developmental stages. In addition to these physical changes to the brain, the prolonged trauma–particularly the helplessness–distorts a child’s sense of self, the perpetrator, and the world in ways that alter their decision making, their memory, and their future relationships.
For instance, whereas a traumatic event that caused PTSD might make you depressed or not trust the person who harmed you (or to fear driving), the trauma from cPTSD might make you suicidal, blame yourself for your victimization, decide to isolate to avoid interpersonal relationships to keep from getting hurt, or become obsessed with never being harmed again.
Basically, cPTSD has the core symptoms from PTSD with some extra challenges, including issues with emotional regulation, self-concept, interruptions in consciousness, difficulties with relationships, perceptions of the perpetrator, and systems of meaning.
DFS and LLH: CPTSD Symptoms
There’s so much more to say about this than I can cover in this superficial introduction, so this will be the first of a series of metas; I’m hoping to go into more depth about some of these categories in future posts (the DFS and emotional regulation/violence one is already drafted, so stay tuned).
Difficulties with Relationships (problems with trust, communication, missing red flags): Both DFS and LLH have a history of trusting the wrong people and not trusting the right people, both in the past and in the present of the show: in the past, LLH missed the fact that SGD hated him and DFS missed the fact that JLQ was obsessed with him, and as a result, both sects were destroyed, many people died, and the two almost destroyed each other. If they had communicated with each other instead of fighting at the donghai battle, they might have realized they were being set up and could have worked together, but their difficulties with trust after perceived betrayal made that impossible for them. They both have a history of overlooking red flags in the present–DFS in particular, keeping the red-flag-personified-JLQ around despite her history of poisoning people, including himself–and they both tend to struggle with relationships in the present: LLH runs away from and/or drugs the people who care about him, and DFS sends endless mixed messages by not telling Li Lianhua most of his plans to help him.
Self-Concept (Self-hatred and self-fragmentation): Li Lianhua is basically the poster child for having a negative self concept: he has an overdeveloped sense of self-blame and responsibility, even believing he deserves to die for leading his men to their deaths, and once he learns he was manipulated and SGD was behind it all, he seems to think it’s his own fault that he was manipulated, lied to, and abused. His self-loathing is so extreme that he imagines his earlier self, Li Xiangyi, to have died, and tries as much as possible to be nothing like that earlier persona. His repeated insistence that Li Xiangyi and Li Lianhua are NOT the same person is reminiscent of the fragmentary sense of self that comes with more extreme trauma, like Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) or Other-Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD), where traumatic experiences are so painful that people form different alters, or differentiated self-states, that can have different names and skills and memories and identities.
Di Feisheng doesn’t have the self-hatred or guilt that LLH does, and it seems like he tries to skip over questions of self worth, blame, or hatred by focusing exclusively on staying true to his code of ethics he’s developed for himself and focusing on gaining the strength necessary to fight for his freedom from mind control and the Di Fortress. But even though he’s kept his Di name, kept his goals the same since escaping Di Fortress, and hasn’t tried to separate himself from his trauma the way LLH did with LXY, he’s even more willing than LLH to take on different identities: it’s literally one of his martial arts skills. The Bone Constriction Skill lets him become someone else for a time, whether that’s a child or Shi Hun. It fits well with his willingness to be whoever he needs to be to accomplish his goals: he’s perfectly willing to be seen as a heartless villain if it lets him protect LLH, and he’s willing to flirt with and pretend to be jealous of JLQ to get information from her, and he’s willing to be LLH’s a-Fei, both with and without his memories.
Interruptions in Consciousness (Amnesia and nightmares for Everyone): LLH and DFS both have nightmares and flashbacks/memories of traumatic events, and as mentioned above, both have interesting hints of having fragmented/fluid senses of self. They both also dissociate, or separate themselves from the present when dealing with traumatic things:  LLH spaces out and gets stuck in his past memories about SGD when talking to FDB after burying SGD, and DFS dissociates from physical pain so as not to make noise both after he’s been stabbed and poisoned with Wuxin Huai and again when JLQ is torturing him in her water dungeon.
They both also have dissociative amnesia that takes away trauma memories, although one is from a poisonous incense plus the magic of qi macgyvering:  LLH forgot the existence of his older brother who died in front of him, and DFS as a-Fei had just about all of his memories (except a few of killing as a child) taken away. Amnesia is a huge part of cPTSD, because it’s the brain’s way of trying to protect you from truths that you might not survive. It can manifest as blocking out one single traumatic event, a bunch of thematically or temporally linked traumatic events, a skill set related to the trauma, or, in the case of something like DID or OSDD, just about everything. It’s endlessly fascinating to me that the show gives us one example of definite traumatic amnesia through LLH, and then seems to almost transform the experience of having DID and being a new part and finding yourself with a new name and very little else into an exaggerated fantasy setting (interestingly, people often report experiencing debilitating headaches when they try to regain memories behind the amnesia barrier). I doubt this is what they were actually going for, since DID is almost universally portrayed incorrectly and offensively in media (one of the alters is almost always portrayed as a serial killer, but that’s a rant for another day), but the different names and the presence of amnesia with LLH made it a fascinating enough parallel that I had to mention it.
Problems with Emotional Regulation (Lashing in vs. lashing out): Li Xiangyi and Di Feisheng are polar opposites when it comes to struggles with emotional regulation: whereas LXY turns his anger inward, directing it all toward self-hate in what’s often called a “toxic shame spiral,” both after the donghai battle and after he finds out about SGD’s role in his shifu’s death, DFS lashes out physically at those who have harmed him, usually via choking people, although he is usually exerting an impressive amount of control over his emotions and strength. To put in perspective just how different their emotional strategies are and how much effort DFS puts into emotional regulation, compare how much more calm he is than LLH during any revelation of past betrayal or painful information, any scene where they confront the people who have abused them, or any scene where they learn they’ve been wrong about something big; LLH is most likely having an emotional flashback (re-experiencing the emotions from the earlier traumas) and DFS is probably compartmentalizing them or dissociating from them to process later/never so he can stay semi-functional and not show a potential opponent a weak spot.
NOTE: This means that DFS is loooong overdue for a very dramatic breakdown when it eventually all catches up to him and he can’t distract himself from it anymore.
Perceptions of Perpetrators: In this way only, Di Feisheng has one advantage: he knows the head of Di Fortress is a cruel, abusive tyrant. While he clearly still fears him, even as a physically strong adult (he has nightmares, flashbacks, and dedicates his life to being free from him, which means he still to some extent feels young, small, and helpless when he thinks of him), DFS knows that he hates him and wants to be free of him. This is probably part of why he’s spared some of the self-hatred LLH experiences: he knows he didn’t deserve the abuse because seeing it happen to other children means he knows the abuse wasn’t a personal reflection on him. It does, however, motivate him to want to be stronger and invulnerable so as to never be helpless again, and that obsession is what drives him to have a single-minded focus on reaching the pinnacle of the jianghu.
It’s so much more complicated for Li Lianhua (and for a more detailed analysis, check out this meta): the childhood perpetrators were manifold–a slew of bandits, whichever children and adults on the street would abuse him for existing and being poor–it probably felt like life itself was to blame. It’s no wonder that when his shifu and shiniang took him in, they were the ultimate rescuers whom he hero-worshipped, so when he felt he made a mistake and his life fell apart, he blamed himself: at least there would be someone to blame that way and something he could do about it (try to kill his past self and hate everything about him). It’s also very telling that LLH doesn’t blame JLQ or YBQ all that much when he learns they poisoned him, and that he’s more angry that SGD murdered their shifu than he is that SGD set him up, hated him, and was the real mastermind behind everything he had blamed himself for; he struggles to stay angry at people who harm him, and would rather blame and hate himself for being tricked than hate the person who tricked him. So, whereas DFS tries to destroy the people who abused him, LLH tries to destroy himself.
If you read this far, thanks! I’m probably going to be posting the DFS and emotional regulation/violence against perpetrator meta next, because it’s drafted, but if there are any of these you desperately want me to talk about more sooner rather than later, let me know! :D

Alphabet research
The Origins Of Alphabetic Writing
The early alphabetic writing started about four thousand years ago. According to many scholars, it was in Egypt that alphabetic writing developed between 1800 and 1900 BC. The origin was a Proto-Sinaitic (Proto-Canaanite) form of writing that was not very well known.
About 700 years after, the Phoenicians developed an alphabet based on the earlier foundations. It was widely used in the Mediterranean, including southern Europe, North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and the Levant. The alphabet was made up of 22 letters, all of the consonants.
In 750 BC, the Greeks added vowels to the Phoenician alphabet and the combination was regarded as the initial true alphabet. This was seized by the Latins (Romans) and combined with some Etruscan characters such as the letter S and F. Around the third century, ancient Latin script removed the letters G, J, V/U, W, Y and Z. When the Roman Empire was ruling parts of the world, they introduced the Roman alphabet derived from the Latin version, although the letters J, U/V and W were still omitted.
Evolution Of The English Alphabet
When the Roman Empire reached Britain, they brought with them the Latin language. Britain at that time was under the control of the Anglo-Saxons, a Germanic tribe that used Old English as their language. At that time Old English was using Futhorc, an older alphabet. It was also called a runic alphabet.
Old English
The combination of the Latin alphabet and the runic alphabet of Futhorc resulted in the modern English alphabet. Some of the additions from the runic alphabets were ‘thorn’ that had a ‘th’ sound and ‘wynn’ that made a ‘w’ sound. Remember that there was no letter ‘w’ in the Latin alphabet. In the Middle Ages, when the people in Britain ceased to use the old runes, the letter thorn was eventually substituted by ‘th’, and the runic ‘wynn’ became ‘uu’ that later evolved into ‘w.’
Later in the same period, the letters ‘j’ and ‘u’ were added and brought the number of letters to 26. However, the letter combinations like ‘æ,’ ‘œ’ and the symbol ampersand (&) were included in the alphabet.
Middle English
When the Normans invaded Britain in 1066 AD, the lowborn were using Old English. The scholars, clergy and nobility were writing and speaking in Latin or Norman. After two centuries under Norman rule, writing in English became popular again, with some of the Old English letters removed. Geoffrey Chaucer used middle English in the Canterbury Tales’ Wife of Bath.
Modern English
In the 15 century, the printing press was introduced to Great Britain by William Caxton. By this time, the English language was standardized. From being used interchangeably, the letters V and U were separated, with the former becoming a consonant while using U as a vowel.
The Table Alphabeticall, the first dictionary in English, published by Robert Cawdrey in 1604. The letter J was also added to Modern English, during this time as well.
https://www.daytranslations.com/blog/origin-english-alphabet/
The history of the alphabet started in ancient Egypt. By 2700 BCE Egyptian writing had a set of some 22 hieroglyphs to represent syllables that begin with a single consonant of their language, plus a vowel (or no vowel) to be supplied by the native speaker. These glyphs were used as pronunciation guides for logograms, to write grammatical inflections, and, later, to transcribe loan words and foreign names. However, although seemingly alphabetic in nature, the original Egyptian uniliterals were not a system and were never used by themselves to encode Egyptian speech. In the Middle Bronze Age an apparently "alphabetic" system known as the Proto-Sinaitic script is thought by some to have been developed in central Egypt around 1700 BCE for or by Semitic workers, but only one of these early writings has been deciphered and their exact nature remains open to interpretation. Based on letter appearances and names, it is believed to be based on Egyptian hieroglyphs. This script eventually developed into the Proto-Canaanite alphabet, which in turn was refined into the Phoenician alphabet. It also developed into the South Arabian alphabet, from which the Ge'ez alphabet (an abugida) is descended. Note that the scripts mentioned above are not considered proper alphabets, as they all lack characters representing vowels. These early vowelless alphabets are called abjads and still exist in scripts such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Syriac. Phoenician was the first major phonemic script. In contrast to two other widely used writing systems at the time, cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphs, it contained only about two dozen distinct letters, making it a script simple enough for common traders to learn. Another advantage of Phoenician was that it could be used to write down many different languages since it recorded words phonemically.

Exercises In Doom: ctubbo pickpocketing cranboo + there's magic involved au! a snippet:
"At the edge of the marketplace there’s this big library with stone stairs leading up to it. It’s a common meeting spot for scholars, so there’s often people of all ages standing around and staring out into the crowd. It’s a perfect vantage point with an effective cover for him to pick his target.
And right now, he thinks his target might be an enderman guy wandering through the crowd.
Seriously, he’s wearing a full suit to the markets. Tubbo thinks he can even see the shine of jewelry. It’s like he’s asking to be robbed."
This fic has 3/5 chapters posted currently (3/9/22) and 21.1k words
Carve That As Your Epitaph: this is an au cbenchtrio alternating pov fic based on the story of "Once Upon a Time (In Space)" by the Mechanisms - which is a story album retelling of fairy tales in space.. if they were also fighting in a major political resistance against a corrupt empire (for more info i use the tag: "ctaye" to talk about it but be aware there might be vague spoilers)
Complete:
It Wasn't Your Fault: this is a cClingyduo fic set post-disc war finale but pre-tommy prison death and they talk about exile. here's a lil section of it: "But Tommy’s different and half of that is Tubbo’s fault. Tommy’s different, and so is he, and he’s not sure where they stand with each other anymore. Not when it comes to things like this. It’s easier when it’s casual. When it’s like nothing has changed. And maybe that’s a cowardly move, but Tubbo never said he wasn’t a coward." This fic has 2700 words and 1 chapter
It's My Problem: this is a ctubbo centric fic that focuses a little bit on his complicated relationship with cwilbur, l'manburg and music. the first chapter is a dream and the second one involves an _beloved family morning. 2800 words all up and 2 chapters

Tentative Friendships: this is a cranboo pov early new l'manburg cbeeduo fic. it happens right after tommy is exiled but the main focus is on their developing relationship. here's a lil section of it: "President Tubbo leans against him, head resting on his shoulder. Ranboo can just barely see his face from this angle. And he looks devastated, in Ranboo’s tentative opinion. Tubbo is a person who keeps his emotions locked up tighter than an enderchest. But something about the exhaustion from the past couple of days must have finally worn through his defences." this fic is 2600 words and 1 chapter
It's Fine, We're Fine: this is a fic where ctubbo interacts with enderwalking cranboo. here's a lil section of it: "Tubbo technically isn’t woken up by the bed dipping. What actually causes him to slip from one of his more peaceful rests into semi-consciousness was his front door opening and closing a minute or so prior. But the lack of action recently has made him soft. And his brain stays hazy and unfocused until, as mentioned, the bed dips.
And by then, it’s too late to consider that this could be someone out to get him or his son. Because he blinks his eyes open and comes face to face with Ranboo." it's 2100 words and 1 chapter
Twisted Traditions: this fic is something i wrote for cbeeduo's 1 year marriage anniversary! here's a snippet: "The grass is cool underneath them, and the sky above them is empty of clouds and full of stars. Tubbo and Ranboo lay stretched out on the grounds of L’Manburg, staring up into the sparkling void of the night sky. It’s a beautiful night, Tubbo notes absently. The grass is growing well after the replanting to cover the craters. The lanterns above L’Manburg city cast a nice glow over them without ruining the view of the stars. Ranboo is next to him." 1600 words and 1 chapter
On Grief and Other Things: a short fic set ten years in the future where ranboo has been revived and tubbo is reacting to that. here’s a snippet: “The process of grief goes like this: it is horrible and all consuming and you try to push it into the back of your mind and cover it up with work, work, work. You cover it up until you don’t have to try anymore and suddenly it’s like something’s been taken from you.” 800 words and 1 chapter
An Overthinker's Perfect Storm: a new l'manburg fic from cranboo's pov of ctubbo falling asleep on his shoulder. here's a snippet: "No, correction, the president is too short to reach his shoulder and is instead asleep on his arm. The president is asleep on his arm and has been for the past five minutes or so and Ranboo’s not exactly sure what to do about it because he can’t just move . Because if he moves, Tubbo wakes up. And Tubbo needs the sleep, in his tentatively given opinion." this is 2k words and 1 chapter
Working 9 Til 5: a fic where tubbo, ranboo and michael go to the beach! here's a snippet:
"The reason he’s packing away lunch instead of serving it is because roughly ten minutes ago Ranboo had suggested they take a trip down to the beach. “An actual beach,” Ranboo had said, “not the one - not your frozen one outside.” Tubbo had laughed. Until Ranboo started - lightheartedly - complaining about being made fun of and insisting he was serious. “You can’t even swim.” Tubbo reminded him." it's 1.6k words and 1 chapter
Tumblr Specials!
yeah under the cut because this is already getting long and i don't feel the need to highlight these ones
What A Wonderful Time: hitting on 16th aftermath that is just sort of me trying to piece together my thoughts on ctubbo's feelings about what happened. this one is an ao3 link but i do have a tumblr copy here: link. basically this is kind of disjointed which is why i feel like it belongs here
Untitled Scientist cbeeduo au: okay so this is a little fic snippet that i’m not going to finish (so don’t mind the first scene being clunky lol) of scientist cbeeduo hope u enjoy ^_^ please check the tags for content warnings Untitled Post-cranboo Death: just something i wrote after he died from tubbo pov - i felt kinda bad because it's a no happy ending thing and i don't like to read those.. but i wrote one.. yeah. so it's staying on tumblr! please check the tags for content warnings
Fanfic I wrote for a 30daysmp fic: this is a fic from lungs of the universe by @/nightmare-rivulets and it's 30!ranboo's pov. not sure how long it is but probably a little less than 1k words
Rpverse:
memorybooks and tubbolul: chapters 1 and 2 - this will be explained when u click on the fic posts but basically it's set around the time when mbranboo was thinking about running away but hadn't yet memorybooks and tubbolul: chapter 3 of this above fic - don't ask why it's formatted so 2 chapters are in one post but the 3rd is in another i don't remember memorybooks and tubbolul: chapter 4! well, retconned to be chapter 4 because i never wrote it but this has the same concept. the major differences is that "chapter 4" was writing in a response to mbranboo actually leaving and the canon events are a little more updated than the previous ones
rpverse benchtrio fluff: no idea how long this is (not too long though like i'd estimate around 1k words) but it's just a little slice of life fluff fic ^_^ tubbolul pov

what are ichi, ni, and san attracted to individually?
Oh man I found my draft of this buried way deep in my docs, I meant to finish answering this ask weeks ago. How long have I been not working on this? Dang.
Anyway.
I've made some posts about who each of them are individually attracted to, but I haven't done one yet on what each of them individually finds attractive, so sure! A lot of the below will also discuss the love interests each of them has expressed attraction to, to the extent that each of their individual love interests reflect their individual tastes.
This post is 2700 words, buckle up.
Let's start off with what they've got in common—because what they've got in common vastly overwhelms their differences. All of their personal tastes have been heavily shaped by the trauma they went through, so both their collective tastes and individual tastes reflect that. Most prominently: they're all attracted to skilled/strong warriors, because 1) under the Xilien military they had it beaten into their heads that the only thing of worth about them is their ability to destroy, 2) at this point nearly all their hobbies and interests besides fighting have atrophied to nothing so fighting is the only couple bonding activity left to them, and 3) they live under constant terror that if they care about something, it will be destroyed/killed, because they ARE an instrument of destruction/death and that's the framework through which they see the universe—so a partner who can defend themself against anything that might try to destroy them is very appealing.
So you get a powerful warrior, that's gonna put a check mark on all three of their "ideal partner" wish lists.
They're also going to be collectively more attracted to people with dorat-esque physical traits. Scales, coloration in the yellow range, long flexible bodies, articulated wings, a one-head-and-four-limbs symmetrical body layout, snoutlike face with one mouth and two eyes... (When you've been around enough aliens, things like "symmetrical bodies with four limbs" and "one mouth and two eyes" are no longer a given.) Not that EVERYTHING is necessary for them to be attracted, of course, but little things add up. For example, if they were forced to choose and if he wasn't their Hated Nemesis, they'd find Godzilla more attractive than Kong on the basis of the fact that he's reptilian, he's got a tail, and he's got a row of spines down his back, and therefore he's more doratlike than Kong. However, Godzilla loses out to Manda, who's snakey, has horns, and is close to a color that dorats actually come in.
This isn't a conscious thing on their part—they don't, like, mentally tally up dorat-like traits. But if you went up to them and asked "hey, what traits do you consider hot?" and for some reason they decided to answer instead of incinerate you, the list of features they'd provide would end up pretty well describing a very handsome dorat. They don't REALIZE they're looking for dorat traits, but if you pointed it out to them they'd be like "Oh, huh. Well, yeah, basically. But a good looking dorat."
Plus some variations based on their original Dorat Sexualities; like, Ichi and Ni are both more attracted to smaller wings and longer/spiny tails, while San is the opposite. (Not that this is necessary. San looked at Gigan's itty mainly-for-decoration wings and went "yeah these are fine" and Ichi looked at Rodan's little nubby tail and went "sure, still cute.")
Other traits they've got a shared interest in: positivity, optimism, upbeat attitudes, all that, because they've got none themselves; self-confidence, courage, bravery; people who understand the war machine life—they don't feel wholly relaxed around people who don't have a kill count that can be measured in planets, they feel like they've got to keep up an artificially harmless façade not to be cast out by people who Don't Get It; someone they can see more as a "beast" than as a "person" because they feel like "people" are out of their league but "beasts" are their equals (which is an artificial divide that they absorbed from Xiliens, based on arbitrary measures of personhood like "does their culture wear clothes" or "did they invent their own technology or inherit someone else's").
Okay, so, on to their individual preferences. In order!!
Starting with Ichi! A.K.A. The Only One That Actually Has A Crush On Rodan. Most of the reasons he likes Rodan are because he hits a lot of the traits that all of them find attractive: great warrior;  he's pretty upbeat; he's brave; he gives them "oh this is definitely A Fellow Animal and not a Person" vibes; they think that he's totally down with destroying the world (because they don't realize that he didn't understand that that was what they were up to); and he makes them go "oh, he's like, 60% dorat? 65%?"—because of his appearance, because he (like them) survived the oxygen destroyer unscathed, and because he could break out of their siren song mind control. So those are all reasons for Ghidorah to like Rodan.
But it doesn't explain why Ichi likes him so much more than the other two.
And deep down... deep, deep down... I think Ichi just wants to get dicked down and Rodan looks like he can do the job.
But seriously though—Ghidorah, as a whole, has been suppressing a broad swath of their emotions for an extremely long time, ESPECIALLY their capacity to form emotional connections with anyone else. Ni and San have both cracked on that front—Ni's got an ongoing crush that he deals with by burying it alive, and San's got a star-crossed love half a galaxy away that he left behind kicking and screaming—but Ichi's never cracked. He's never let himself fall for anyone. Ni and San see "keep Ghidorah isolated, independent, self-contained" as an obligation; Ichi sees it as a duty—his duty to his other two parts.
None of the three is officially the leader/in charge, but Ichi ended up the de facto leader because back when they were even worse of a psychological wreck than they are now he was the one who just barely held it together enough to corral them and keep them going. He's the team Mom Friend, assuming that the mom in question is also a hardened drill sergeant without an ounce of natural maternal instinct, and the friends the drill sergeant mom friend is mothering are two traumatized soldiers trying to escape a postapocalyptic hellscape so they can forage for food. He's done a better job of not getting attached than the other two because he's felt most strongly that that's absolutely not an option.
But then they're on Earth, one of the worlds they've struggled the hardest to try to conquer, one of the most frustrating experiences of their post-Xilien-escape life; and they've just woken up from several millennia in ice, pissed the fuck off but also disoriented as hell and keenly aware of the fact that they lost a HELL of a fight in order to have been frozen; and mentally, they're somewhat rattled apart, they're still rebooting their usual emotional shields and defenses, they're still trying to get the mental pieces put back together, and Godzilla attacks them like a minute after they wake up and their brains are definitely not put back together—
There are holes in Ichi's mental defenses that have never been there before. He's vulnerable in a way he hasn't been before. It's not that something about Rodan is more attractive to him than it is to the other two—it's that the other two keep a good solid inch of iron around their capacity for affection, but Ichi keeps a nice fat five-foot-thick steel wall around his; and right now that wall is missing. He is completely exposed to the possibility of someone swooping in and seizing his heart—and Rodan went right for his chest with talons extended. And because just that one time, that one day, he's already shaken up, he's already vulnerable, Rodan gets through when the next day he might not.
And so even though the other two can also look at Rodan and agree, yes, the things Ichi is attracted to him for are indeed attractive, Ichi falls hard and fast when the other two don't.
Or, the tl;dr version:
Ichi has been suppressing his sexuality for several times longer than the human race has existed. For a moment—just a moment—all that suppression is gone; and so he's at risk of latching on to anyone that struck him as attractive. On this day, at this moment, he wants to get dicked down, and by god, Rodan looks like he can do the job.
And with all that written... because everything we've seen that Ichi is attracted to so far fits in with what Ghidorah-as-a-whole is into, I'm not sure that I've got anything specific to list that sets his tastes apart from the collective's. I might come up with some later, but since thus far they haven't been relevant in what I've been writing, I haven't come up with any in particular. Maybe it's just the case that all the things he's attracted to also happen to be things that The Whole is attracted to. Y'all wanna suggest specifics, I'll see if I like any that I can work in?
Ni's romantic tastes are best covered here, with the explanation of why he's into San:
https://ckret2.tumblr.com/post/187039340467/anonymous-said-why-did-redacted-fall-for
And honestly... that's it. That's his taste. San is his taste. His taste is San. He had a babycrush on San since back when they were three individual dorats that barely knew each other, long before they were picked up for Highly Unethical Animal Experimentation, mutated, combined, and turned into Ghidorah; and realizing that one of the two people he was stitched together to and sharing brainspace with was the dude he had a crush on was one of the primary things that galvanized him to, like, survive. And since then having a secret limerent obsession with one of the two dudes he's fused to has determined almost everything about his romantic preferences, sexuality, and entire mental/emotional landscape.
What he liked San for originally can basically be boiled down to:
1) He was less "hivemindy" than other dorats, particularly dorats of his sex—San's sex is the one that's got less control over their empathic abilities, and so it's easy for a bunch of them to get together and catch the same emotion from each other like a fast-moving contagion. San had a tendency to go less "tunnel vision" on whatever The Group was thinking about and notice things going on outside their current activity—often with such great interest and attention that it broke The Group out of the zone as well, to their consternation—but Ni, who was uncomfortable in hiveminds, appreciated that about him.
2) Ni's of the dorat sex that's got stronger empathic abilities, but also a better ability to dim the degree to which they're active—and Ni liked to not just dim his ambient empathic field but also turn it off completely, because he didn't like others reading his feelings at all times. This is uncommon enough in dorats that it actually drove their owner to take him to the vet to make sure his head was okay. (And it was okay; he was just Extremely, Extremely Introverted by dorat standards.) Most dorats thought that this made Ni super weird/uncomfortable/off-putting. San thought it made him interesting, a unique novelty worth investigating. Ni appreciated that San didn't radiate Wild Discomfort in his presence.
3) San was, like, pretty hot. For a dorat. To other dorats. Adolescent dorats. Basically he was the cutest preteen snake in the room because he looked like a 14-year-old snake instead of a 12-year-old snake.
But that... was an extremely long time ago. And basically none of it applies anymore. What's being hivemindy or not matter when there's only three of you and you're always in and out of each other's heads? What's it matter that once upon a time long long ago San thought Ni was okay for shutting off access to his emotions when now there are only two people who CAN feel Ni's emotions/thoughts and both of them are equally chill & used to him keeping his mind closed/filtered to them? What's it matter that San was a cute baby snake when they're now three terrifyingly ancient monster snakes that were mutated to look almost identical?
So, by this point? What he's attracted to is, legitimately, "whatever San is like." His preferences shift so that they're always San-centric. San is the emotional rock Ni is clinging to.
... It's honestly kind of terribly unhealthy.
So if you asked him what he's attracted to, he'd say, like, "Oh, you know... someone who's observant, attentive... someone who's curious about his environment, likes learning... someone who appreciates the little things... uhh...... someone who's closer to the left shoulder than the right shoulder........." and then he'd peter out of traits to list because at this point Ichi, Ni, and San's identities are like 75% overlapped and there's not much room left in them for their individual differences.
But he wouldn't be interested in any of those listed traits if they were in somebody other than San.
(Ni is capable of being "interested" in other people—but it's 50% "I'm interested in you as a friend" and 50% "We, Ghidorah, currently in a mood to feel like an individual instead of like three people, are together interested in you romantically." Ghidorah slides back and forth between being "three-in-one" and being "one-from-three."
San's tastes are covered pretty thoroughly in the post about why he (and the rest of Ghidorah) is into Gigan:
https://ckret2.tumblr.com/post/186622638902/more-on-the-relationship-between-gigan-and
Beyond all the reasons San likes Gigan that Ichi & Ni share—his skill in & passion for violence, his familiarity with what it's like to be an unwilling war weapon—he also likes his sense of humor, his ability to appreciate and revel in little details the way San does... and, probably more importantly than anything else, Gigan represented a way out.
All this time, Ghidorah has kept together and remained... if not "stable" in the sense of "emotionally healthy," then "stable" in the sense of "maintaining a mental balance well enough not to fall over"—but they're stable like a tightrope walker who's gotten really good at maintaining that balance on their tightrope, not like somebody who's standing on solid ground. And they maintain that balance through isolating themselves, never letting themselves get attached to any place or any thing or any one, never letting themselves linger in one spot for long, always moving on, on, on, on, back into space. They're that meme "If I keep my body moving and my mind occupied at all times, I will avoid falling into a bottomless pit of despair."
Which is all well and good, except "avoiding connecting with anything" does not adequately keep San's mind occupied, and the only reason he hasn't fallen into a bottomless pit of despair is because he's got two other people in his head just barely tugging him back from toppling in. But he's desperate for... a sense of continuity, a sense that he can invest something in life that won't vanish in three days, a sense that anything matters. He wants desperately to connect to something else—or someone else.
Gigan offers that connection—Gigan is someone safe they can connect to, because he has the same lifestyle as them. He's someone that San can let in... without them having to change their life at all.
So, that's what he's attracted to that sets him apart from the other two: he's attracted to escape routes. He falls for someone who can anchor them so they don't keep tumbling off into space, from world to world and apocalypse to apocalypse. He wants someone who can be an excuse for them to stop and hold still. Someone who's compatible with them, someone who's just like them, someone who burns worlds the same way they do, but is capable of wrapping their arms (wings? tails? whatever) around Ghidorah and holding them in one place—whether that's "one place" physically or emotionally.
He's just tired of floating through outer space in asteroids.

It’s Chaos, Be Kind (1/1)
Summary: Post 7x08, Wish Hook and Henry (Captain Cobra v.2) have an evening out. 2700 words, Rated G.
The title of this fic is from Patton Oswalt’s Annihilation, and was apparently the motto of his late first wife. I don’t know how the concept ended up in this fic, but it did.
This fic is for @justanotherwannabeclassic , who wrote a prompt on her blog for something involving Henry getting to know this other version of Killian, and struggling with the fact that he’s a different man.
Taking a deep breath, Henry shifted the entrance flap aside and stepped into the tent. Hook was sitting up on the bed, looking a little less terrible than the last time Henry had seen him.
“Hey,” he said, consciously keeping his distance from the other man. It was still a strange experience, looking at Hook’s familiar face and having to remind himself that this wasn’t the man he knew. Maybe his experience with Regina dividing into two people should have prepared him for this, but that was different. Both versions of his mother had been exactly that: his mother. This man was still essentially a stranger. “How are you feeling?” Henry asked, clasping his hands behind his back to give them something to do.
“I’m all right, lad. Thank you.” With a visible effort, he pulled himself to his feet. “What can I do for you?”
“I was wondering if you wanted to… I mean, I know you don’t drink, but… I don’t know, go into town and… do something?” He shrugged, feeling all kinds of awkward.
Hook raised an eyebrow. “Do something?”
“Yeah. Find a tavern, get some decent food for a change.”
“Seems risky for you to show your face in town, Henry. Lady Tremaine’s soldiers are still looking for you.”
Henry pulled the hood of his cloak up to hide his face. “It’ll be fine. I’m sure you can find a place down by the docks frequented by people who’ll mind their own business, right?”
Hook chuckled. “Aye, I suppose I can.” He seemed to reach an internal conclusion and nodded. “All right, then. Let’s go.”
The ride to the shore via well-hidden forest trails was quiet, as the two men focused on their horses’ footing in the dim light of evening. Hook seemed to know exactly where to go once they arrived at the docks, not hesitating as he dismounted at the hitching post of what appeared to be the Platonic ideal of a seedy, dockside tavern. Henry followed his lead, hitching his horse to the post and tipping a few coppers to the boy who was charged with watching the patrons’ horses.
Keeping his hood up and head down as they walked in, Henry got the impression of a crowded, dank room that stank of stale beer and sweat and tallow candles. The wood under his feet was well worn, and he trained his eyes on the pointy-toed boots of the pirate in his company as he followed Hook to a table in a poorly lit corner of the room. Once seated, Henry took the chance to lower his hood, figuring that keeping his head covered would be more suspicious than just revealing his face. He’d have to hope that no one here was working for Lady Tremaine. By the looks of the dirty sailors who made up the clientele, that was a fairly safe bet.
A bored barmaid worked her way over to their table. Henry ordered an ale and a meat pie, hoping that the meat in it would be marginally edible. Hook ordered the same meat pie but asked for a cup of tea instead of ale. The barmaid gave him a confused look, but she sauntered off without a comment.
Henry suddenly felt guilty for bringing him here. “I’m sorry, Hook,” he said. “I probably should have come up with a better idea than bringing you to a booze-soaked tavern.”
Hook gave him a tight smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Don’t worry, lad, I won’t fall off the wagon just because another man is drinking in my line of sight.”
Not reassured, Henry shrugged. “Still. It’s too bad coffee shops and juice bars haven’t caught on here yet.” The confused frown that appeared on Hook’s face was terribly familiar, a look that his stepfather must’ve given him a thousand times over pop culture references that Killian didn’t understand. It made Henry’s heart constrict to see it. “Never mind,” he said quietly. “Anyway, thanks for coming with me, Hook. I felt like I needed some time away from the camp to think.”
“You can call me Killian,” Hook said. “If you prefer.”
Henry’s heart sank a little. “I… don’t know if I can, actually,” he replied with a wince. “After mom and… the other you got married, I mostly called him Killian. It’s just easier to call you something different. I hope that’s okay. If ‘Hook’ bothers you, I can--”
“No, it’s fine. I understand. I’m a poor substitute for your stepfather, I’m sure.”
“It’s not that,” Henry said, guilt making him want to sink into the floor.
Silence settled, and eventually, the barmaid appeared with their meat pies and drinks. Henry took a grateful pull from his ale, which was better than anything they had to drink back at the rebel camp. The meat pie, on the other hand…
“This is awful,” Hook said, appearing to struggle to swallow the bite he had taken.
“Yeah. Sorry. Wow, I’m just batting a thousand today.”
There was that confused look again. “Batting what?”
Henry again wished for the floor to open up underneath him. “Sorry. It doesn’t matter.”
“All right.”
“You probably regret coming on this adventure with me,” Henry said, grimacing. “I’m aware that Emma put you in a position where you couldn’t really say no.”
The confusion only deepened. “Are you joking? I got to see my daughter again. Even if it was only for a moment, I know now that she’s all right. I couldn’t be more grateful for that.”
Henry’s curiosity about Alice’s origins resurfaced. He settled back against the wall, keeping his face out of the lantern light. “So, you raised Alice alone?”
“Aye. Her mother… abandoned her. If I hadn’t been there for her, no one would have.” He took a sip of his tea. “Giving up my ship to stay behind with Alice when she was an infant was the only choice I could have made. I’ve never regretted it.”
Henry had pieced some of the story together, mostly from what Regina had told him when he and Ella returned from Wonderland. “And she couldn’t leave that tower? How did you manage it? How did you feed her and get clothes for her?”
Wiping his hand over his face, Hook hesitated before answering, and Henry wondered if his questions were too personal. “I made quick trips into town when I had to, although I was loathe to leave her alone. I paid some of the merchants to make deliveries when I could.” He shrugged. “I just… made do.”
Henry’s thoughts went to his stepfather, and how much he valued his relationships with so many people in Storybrooke, from Snow and David to Granny to their own version of Cinderella, and how he seemed to collect allies across the realms who found excuses to visit him or in Ariel’s case, call him on that ridiculous seashell. “That must have been very lonely.”
“It was, but what choice did I have? She’s my daughter,” he said as if it was the simplest thing in the world.
Henry gave him an affectionate smile. “Every version of you is a good father, I guess.”
Hook seemed surprised at that. “Do you think of him that way? As your father?”
Shrugging, Henry shifting in his seat. “I only knew my real dad for a short time before he died, while Killian was in my life from the time I was around twelve. And he was married to my mom -- my other mom, Emma,” he added unnecessarily, “for most of my teen years. So yeah, I guess I think of him as my dad more than I do my biological father by this point.” A thought struck him, and Henry set his ale down with a thunk. “You don’t know who my father was, do you?”
He got an impassive look from Hook in response. “Should I?”
“It was Baelfire. Milah’s son. Milah was my grandmother.”
The shock on the other man’s face was palpable. “My Milah?”
“Yeah. My mom met Baelfire -- he went by Neal at that time -- in the world without magic, which she ended up in because of Regina’s curse. She didn’t know who he was… well, she didn’t know who she was either since she’d been separated from her parents as a baby. It was only much later that she learned he was Rumpelstiltskin’s son.” Hook still looked shocked, and so Henry continued to ramble to fill the silence. “So, yeah, the other you ended up helping to raise Milah’s grandson, which is sort of poetic when you think about it.”
Hook cleared his throat. “Your family tree is complex.” His words were impassive, but Henry could still hear the emotion in his voice at the revelation of Henry’s parentage.
Laughing, he picked up his ale. “Yeah, no kidding.”
“And the other me… was a good father? Or, stepfather?”
“Oh yeah. I mean, we had some tough times, and I wasn’t always easy on him.” Henry grimaced. “Come to think of it, I could be a real asshole when I wanted to be.”
“That is the purview of teenagers, oftentimes,” Hook said.
“Yeah. But in spite of my attitude, he was… he was great. I was lucky to have him in my life. I’m not sure I appreciated it enough when I was growing up, but… now I miss him.” He looked down at his unappetizing dinner, pushing it away. “He was a good person to talk to, particularly when I was having romantic problems.”
Hook narrowed his eyes knowingly. “Is that the reason for this little outing tonight? Are you having romantic problems?”
“Not problems, just… there’s a lot happening, and I thought…” He sighed. “Killian used to know just what to say, and I thought maybe you…”
“Would prove to be an adequate substitute?”
“Okay, well, that makes it sound like I’m using you as some kind of surrogate father figure.” He put his head in his hands. “I’m still the same asshole kid, apparently.”
“You say that like I wouldn’t be honored to listen, Henry.”
Henry closed his eyes. He could almost imagine that it really was his stepfather he was talking to, even though their mannerisms and even their voices were not entirely identical. But this man wasn’t his stepfather, and he’d do well to remember that. They didn’t have the shared history that he had with his mother’s husband. Not only that, but this man’s timeline had diverged decades ago, and different experiences meant he was a different man. Just because they shared the same face and a lot of the same backstory didn’t mean the two Killian Joneses would have the same outlook on the world.
“Come on, lad, tell me what’s troubling you,” Hook said, tapping the table with a finger.
Henry took a deep breath and let it out. “It’s Ella.”
“Ah. Trouble in paradise?”
“No, that’s just it, things are good. Really good. I think… I think I’m falling in love with her.”
Hook raised an eyebrow at him. “So what’s the problem?”
“I grew up with all of these people around me who had these huge, epic love stories. My grandparents -- the other ones, Snow White and Prince Charming -- overcame multiple curses to be together. Emma and the other Killian… I mean, he literally died for her more than once! It’s a lot to live up to.”
“Aye, I imagine it would be.”
“So I left Storybrooke to find that. To find that kind of amazing, life-shattering true love. Sure, I told myself it was to have other kinds of adventures, to see the world and write about it: to find my story. But when I imagined my story, I always imagined myself with a partner. Someone I could maybe have a family with.”
“And perhaps now you’ve found her.”
“Yeah, but have I?” The strong ale on an empty stomach was making him feel a little bit drunk already. “There are so many realms, so many people.” He waved a hand in the air vaguely. “Could I really have found my soulmate, if there is such a thing?”
The exhale that Hook gave him in response was full of exasperation. “What exactly do you think is going to happen when you meet this person, Henry? Is a choir of angels going to come down and proclaim your true love from on high?”
“No, but--”
“I’ve spent a lot of time over the last few years thinking about fate. Apparently, a significant portion of my fate was in the hands of Regina and her bloody dark curse. She doesn’t cast the curse, and I wind up with my wonderful Alice. She does cast the curse, and I wind up in a strange realm married to the Savior.”
Henry blinked at him. “What’s your point?”
“My point is, all it took was one change in something that I had absolutely no control over, and I ended up living a completely different life. I fell in love -- true love, apparently -- with a woman who in the realm of the Wish, I barely crossed paths with. And my beloved Alice never even existed. My point is, it’s chaos. All of it.”
“Great,” Henry said sarcastically.
Hook leaned in, stabbing at the table with his index finger. “It’s chaos, so if you’ve met a woman you love, who makes you feel like if only you could kiss her you’d be able to conquer the world, then for fuck’s sake, don’t waste your life looking for something better. If she’ll allow it, hold onto her and don’t let go.” He leaned back on his seat again. “I only ever knew that kind of love with one woman. The fate of your stepfather tells me that perhaps someday I can know it again. But it’s beautiful and terrible and rare, and if you waste your bloody chance with Ella, then I’ll see you walk the plank.”
Henry gaped at him, and then he felt a laugh bubble up inappropriately. “What plank would that be?”
Hook rolled his eyes. “It’s a metaphorical plank.”
“Ah. I see. A metaphorical plank.”
“Were you this much of a pain the arse of your stepfather?” Hook asked, the pitch of his voice rising in indignation.
“Almost daily.” Henry scratched at the soft wood of the table next to where someone had carved their initials. Beautiful and terrible and rare, he thought, remembering the way Ella’s lips had felt against his. The way his heart tried to trip over itself anytime she passed in front of his field of vision.  “Thank you. For listening, and… for being my friend.”
“Well, clearly you need someone to talk some sense into you occasionally.”
Henry grinned widely. “Clearly.”
Hook sighed and stood up, putting some coins on the table. “Shall we go back to the camp and see if we can scrounge up some decent food?”
“Yeah, we probably should.”
“Perhaps you should seek out your lady love and fall upon her mercy for a hot meal,” Hook said as they exited the tavern.
“Or perhaps I should do the opposite of that and invite her back to my tent for a late-evening meal,” Henry replied.
“Ah, you’re right, that is a better scheme,” Hook said.
Henry made his way over to his horse, patting its neck in greeting. “It’s not a scheme. I’m trying to be nice.”
Mounting his horse, Hook looked over at him. “Thank you for inviting me out, lad.”
“For inviting you to a place where you can’t drink the alcohol and the food is terrible? Yeah, real nice of me,” he muttered as he settled into the saddle of his own horse.
“For sharing a conversation with me, and for caring what I think. It was very kind of you.”
“Well,” Henry said, “someone tells me it’s all chaos. Is there anything else we can do but be kind to each other?”
Hook smiled. “No, I suppose there isn’t.”

Can You Trust The Bible
Tumblr media
It is not surprising that this is a common question. According to Google in March 2021 there were exactly 129,864,880 books in the world. One book quickly stands out with no comparison is the bible. Described as a collection of religious texts, it is impossible to place this book in just one genre.
This book is everywhere, chances are it is in your home right now. It has also been printed in almost every language, and it's old, really old. The bible is in fact the oldest book in the world. The oldest biblical text found is approximately 2700 years old. Most believe the first book Genesis was written approximately 3400 years ago and the last book Revelation was completed around 90AD or approximately 1900 years ago.
Its powerful writings have spawned over 30,000 religious organizations or denominations worldwide. The bible is a holy grouping of hebrew writings that consist of a total of 66 books within the one binding. Those books are categorized into two parts. The first part is known as the Old Testament or First Covenant. It is also known in Judaism as the Torah. Although Islam is considered an Abrahamic faith, the Quran is not identical to the Old Testament as the Torah remains. The second part is known as the New Testament or Renewed Covenant. 40 authors are believed to have been inspired by God when writing the bible.
Can you trust the translation accuracy?
Most of the controversy surrounding the bible is usually rooted in the opinions of those who oppose the very existence of a higher benevolent being. Still others question the translation conversion integrity. That is a valid concern considering the interpretation of its content could be expected to vary from that of the original author's intent. The bible can be found in over 3,312 languages with approximately 50 different versions in English alone. Was it all translated accurately?
Consider the archaeological evidence. In 1946 in the Qumran Caves in the Judaean Desert of the west bank, ancient Hebrew Manuscripts were found. These manuscripts consisted of 800+ documents made of animal skin, papyrus and even forged copper. The material composition of these manuscripts were important because it allowed fairly accurate radiocarbon dating to determine they were over 2000 years old. These manuscripts are known as the Dead Sea Scrolls.
The Dead Sea Scrolls can be viewed today in Jerusalem and were written in mostly Hebrew but some in Aramaic and Greek. These are the three original languages the bible was written in. All the books of the Torah except for Nehemiah and Esther were found. As you can imagine anyone questioning the integrity of modern day bible translations would be interested in a comparison. The Dead Sea Scrolls have provided an impressive amount of evidence for the overall integrity of the modern bible and its various translations. The Dead Sea Scrolls also help when considering the following topic of missing books.
Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek all do not perfectly translate into english. This is generally the reason behind why there are so many translation versions. Translators are forced to decide whether they are seeking to convey the exact words or the central idea of the text. This process has generated two types of translations known as “word for word” or Thought for Thought. Some blend both. You may want to consider the planned use of the bible when deciding what will work best for you.
Are books missing from the bible?
This all time best seller has generated opposition to its powerful message since its pages were first read. Early christians suffered fatal persecution for simply possessing a copy. So it isn’t difficult to consider that some wishing to suppress various messages contrary to their position of power or control, may not only manipulate translation but remove content from the bible entirely. Is there any evidence of this?
Depending on your patience and willingness to research the answer you will find the answer varies depending on the source. Research will generally lead to the 14 or 15 Apocrypha books or the 7 books removed by Martin Luther.
Let's discuss the Apocrypha first. This word is derived from ancient Greek and means those that were hidden. Some have interpreted the meaning to be too sacred or secret to be in everyone's hands. Eventually in time it has become known as false, bad or heretical. In this context it refers to religious texts that were in some versions of the catholic bible.
I will be going into much greater depth on this subject when I publish my book, Book of Books sometime in 2021. In the meantime with regards to the accusation that upto 15 books or more have been removed from our modern day translations, the answer is, possibly.
The dead sea scrolls did contain portions of three books considered Apocryphal. Ben Sira (or Ecclesiasticus), Tobi, and the Epistle of Jeremiah. It is also suggested that the Book of Enoch was found which is not confirmed. All this is evidence of is that these three books were likely around at a much later date than previously assumed. Why these 15 books may have been removed is another consideration which leads to Martin Luther. The 16th century father of Protestantism, is known for his removal of 7 books from the catholic bible at the time. He left the catholic church in 1517 because he denounced the catholic practice of selling pardons for sins.
He is known for removing 7 books from the Catholic bible. All of those books were part of the 15 referred to as the Apocrypha. These are referred to as deuterocanonical books by Catholics and Orthodox or otherwise known as Apocrypha by Jews and Protestants for obvious reasons. The reason why he removed them is not confirmed but assumed generally that they did not fit what was assumed as the overall accepted inspired writings of the bible (aka canon).
Conclusion
Those that have actually read the pages of the bible and still walk away doubting the content as divinely inspired are small in number for a reason. Personally I believe it's impossible, which is why I usually ask any opposition, “ Did you really, really read it, really?” With regard to the bible as we know it today, our modern translations such as the King James Version or the American Standard etc. are trustworthy in terms of the message's integrity and authenticity.
So yes, you can trust that little to nothing was lost from the original text through the process of translation. Certain versions have been found to differ from the collective and those are usually associated directly to their associated individual sect or denomination. With regard to the missing books, you are free to develop your own conclusion. Personally being a believer that the writings of the bible are of divine origin, I cannot conclude that anything meant to be provided to the children of God would ever be allowed to be removed. If in the future these claimed missing books are proven as authentic I do not believe they could ever be of any overall importance. I am planning to personally read them all and I will provide updates.
The collective message of the bible has survived antiquity, and much scrutiny. I believe the entire message of the bible is sound. Not one piece of evidence has been produced proving the bible incorrect, ever. You must read the books yourself to make a sound determination and If you are seriously considering a version or translation to call your own, you may wish to consider praying to God for guidance and also make sure that you thoroughly research each version before committing.

TEA
The history of tea is covered with mystery, fable and mysticism, but also with events with historical support. China is the country of origin of tea and according to legend it would have been a Buddhist monk, Bodhidharm,, who introduced the Zen form of Buddhism in China, who discovered it around 520 BC. According to legend, this monk in his meditations fell asleep and ashamed of this behavior and  cut his eyelids. Where they fell asleep, a plant called ch'a grew, which is the Chinese word to designate tea. Other stories attribute a much older origin, around 2700 BC, during the reign of Emperor Chen Nung. Tradition relates that he was poisoned, or accidentally poisoned (it is not clear). However, he was able to overcome the digestive crisis by consuming an infusion of the leaves of a tree, the tea tree. Another version relates that while Chen Nung was resting under a tea tree, he fell into the bowl of hot water and those tea leaves he used to drink. Curiosity led him to try what would be the first tea infusion, which he found refreshing and stimulating. Chen Nung thus introduced the custom of consuming tea in his court, a custom that quickly spread first to the aristocracy and then to the plebs. In the year 200 BC, a Chinese book on medicinal plants mentions the detoxifying effects of tea leaves. Fable and history are confused until the eighth century AD. And that is when tea was introduced in Japan, and later throughout Asia, arriving for the first time in Europe imported by the Dutch in the early seventeenth century. However, due to the political and colonialist quarrels of the time, the English banned the consumption of tea imported from Holland, so they ordered the East India Company to bring it directly from China. As it was a good business, they opted in 1834 to promote their cultivation in one of their most important colonies, India, and later in Ceylon, Madagascar, Formosa and other Asian countries.
Tea art teachers, who have studied the history of tea, inspect ancient books, restore the way of drinking tea in ancient society, and unveil the history of Chinese tea drinking. Growing tea and drinking tea does not mean that there is a tea culture. It must also have the participation of literature  and cultural connotation. The "Book of Tea" by Lu Yu of the Tang Dynasty systematically summarized the tea production and drinking experience of the Tang Dynasty and put forward the spirit of tea ceremony that is conscientious and frugal. Drinking the right tea at the right time can achieve more results with less effort. What is the best tea time?
Morning tea
Drinking a cup of light tea can not only quickly replenish the body's water, clean up the stomach, but also reduce blood pressure Thinning blood is good for health and can also prevent and treat constipation
What tea to drink in the morning
It is better to drink black tea in the morning, because black tea can promote blood circulation in the body, and at the same time can eliminate the cold in the body, so that the blood supply to the brain is sufficient. Its preferable to drink tea along with milk in breakfast but after eating something or drinking water because tea if comes in contact with empty stomach may cause adverse reactions.
Afternoon tea
It is suggested to drink Tea at 3:00 evening have positive impacts on body health  and prevent colds. At this time, drinking tea is the most important commonly known as afternoon tea. For some “three high” people, if they insist on drinking afternoon tea, they can achieve the effects that drugs cannot achieve.
What tea to drink in the after:
Green Tea is advised to drink in after noon as compared to lack tea because it can clear liver and gall heat and resolve liver toxins. The tea is rich in vitamin E and has anti-aging effects. Green tea enters the kidney meridian, which helps the water to remove turbidity and urinate more smoothly.
Drink tea at night
Drink tea around 8:30 pm.. But do not drink green tea, because green tea is non-fermented tea, it has certain stimuli to the human body. You can choose to drink black tea, especially cooked Pu'er. The cooked Pu'er is pure in nature and does not affect the normal sleep of the human body. Over time, even drinking is not the taste of tea, but the taste of the heart and life. The difference is that the plain time in life is the majority, but when you calm down, there is always a taste in tea. Drinking tea requires respect for each type of tea. Like a person with a destiny, no matter whether he is high or low, he can find something he admires from him.
Because human body behaves differently in every season so taking Tea in every season and timing would also be different. In spring light tea called spring Tea, Green tea is suggested in autumn, and black hot tea in winter. In autumn because is embedded with heat of summer, taking green tea will eliminate remaining heat in body and refreshes body, likewise black tea is rich in proteins gives sweet and warm effects, and it strengthens the body by smoothly digesting the food.
Generally speaking taking tea properly and on time by keeping seasons in mind greatly help in body strengthening.

The Sunspot Illusion
In the left image we see a small portion of the Sun in regular, white light. It reveals a surface covered in dark patches known as sunspots – or, in other words, the Sun’s version of acne. The number of sunspots visible on our Sun at any point in time is highly correlated with the star’s 11 year period of solar activity. In the years when the Sun is quieter, we do not see as many active features like sunspots and flares, and, consequently, get less impressive northern light displays. On the other hand, when the Sun is more lively and vivacious, we see more acne and radiation storms.
These blemishes are a sign of an active Sun. The image on the right shows the arcs and loops of magnetic field lines on the Sun as observed in extreme ultraviolet light. Sunspots appear where the lines are crowded together into active regions with a strong magnetic field. The pressure of this strong magnetic field can cause the temperature of the area to decrease and the light to fade, which is why the sunspots appear dark – relatively. A sunspot by itself, not near the rest of the Sun in a nighttime sky, would appear brighter than the Full Moon!
These sunspots are dim and cold when compared with the rest of the Sun, yes, but when you are using the brightest, most brilliant object in the Solar System as your base of comparison, everything else is inevitably going to fall a bit short. This is the same reason we do not label everyone smaller than Yao Ming as tiny. Comparing heights with one of the tallest men alive is an exercise in futility, even for a person taller than average.
While certainly chillier than the Sun’s average surface temperature of 5,500° Celsius, a sunspot is actually rather hot when compared to what we are used to here on Earth. They usually clock in with a temperature around 2700-3700° Celsius. The hottest, industrial furnaces at cremation centers turn bodies to ash at a little less than 1000° Celsius, so, when it comes to our tolerance levels and perspective, sunspots are beyond sweltering.
In this case, first impressions are deceiving, appearances are dependent on surroundings, and there is not a single part of the Sun that is cool enough not to be ridiculously hot.

The weird thing about having a fairly ancient surname in an unidentified language is no one knows what it means or what its origins are. But it’s also a really common name, so a lot of people have tried to weigh in. The top contenders, in chronological order of supposed origin, seem to be:
lapis lazuli
possibly as a weird nickname for “Issachari” so their identity wouldn’t be lost when Issachar was destroyed... like 2700 years ago... this one strikes me as the absolute least likely, but it’s surprisingly popular on the internet, and the thing is Jews really do have a couple of surnames that are traceably this old--my mom’s mom’s mom’s mom’s maiden name was one of those
possibly an ancestor worked with gemstones, probably during the Roman era, in the Near East
pure, good, handsome (depending slightly on language of origin)
this would also make it a Roman-era Near Eastern name
“pure” and “lapis lazuli” (or “sapphire”) have different etymologies and spellings but similar pronunciations in a handful of Near-Eastern languages; for spelling reasons, I think “pure” is the more likely option if I want to try to claim the name is this old, but after 2000 years and transliteration across that many languages you can’t still trust spelling
I once saw someone claim that my surname (with this meaning) came from the Roman-era name of the capital of Galil, but if it is a demonym I think the below options are more likely
an ancestor was a teacher/rabbi a school in Germany that existed around 900-1100 years ago and was destroyed in the Crusades
this is the only one where I feel really confident people historically had this name and used a spelling/pronunciation combo close to my family’s, so this seems to me like the most likely
an ancestor lived in the city that school had previously been in, sometime between 150 and 500 years ago, and fled during one of the many expulsions of the Jews from that city
the counterargument here is that there’s a whole cadre of people who are well-documented to be in this circumstance--that is, from that era--who spell their name more or less like the modern name of the city, and not like how I spell my (much more common!) last name; this implies that even if my name has a similar geographic origin it’s an older version (thus being more common--more descendants) that comes from a different migration
sapphire
possibly an ancestor worked with gemstones sometime in the past 300 years in Europe (at some point the words for “sapphire” and “lapis lazuli” merged and then diverged, in I think several languages, so it would have to be after that happened). Usually the spelling is different in that case (as above, this version is also a reasonably common name, but not as common as my name); my dad has a second or third cousin who uses something closer to that spelling but I think that has something to do with their immigration to Canada, not how the name used to be spelled
What a weird mix, though.

Massage therapy is an intuitive, healing art that has been around for thousands of years and its history dates back thousands of years to ancient cultures that believed in it’s medical benefits. The first written records of massage therapy are found in China and Egypt. When you get a stomach ache, you rub your belly.  When you turn an ankle, your natural instinct is to rub it. When infants cry, parents rock and rub to calm. The natural instinct to use purposeful touch has evolved into a healthy professional industry. Over the years, techniques have been developed that activate natural healing process, stimulating blood flow, guiding hormone production and helping your body heal itself. The English word “massage” likely comes from the Arabic “mass’h”, which literally translates to “touch”. But may also have its root in the French (“massage”) or Latin “massa”. May believe that massage therapy is the precursor to physical therapy and chiropractic and orthopedic medicine. Tracing the history of massage is difficult, since it has largely been obscured from public awareness. It’s been practiced in virtually every culture since the beginning of time, so it’s a little hard to track. What follows is “one version” of the history of modern massage in a nutshell. The earliest date of origin for massage therapy was back in 2700 B.C.E., which was about 4700 years ago. At this date, there was a historical book created involving Chinese medicinal traditions and it was titled “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic Book of Internal Medicine.” This book was not published in English until the mid-1900s, but it is now considered one of the basic books taught in massage therapy, detailing the practices and techniques that are used in current Oriental Medicine and Massage Therapy. Among these are acupuncture and acupressure, which are closely related.  Acupuncture involves the use of needles placed at meridian points to promote health and wellness. Acupressure involves the use of hands, fingers, and massages tools on precise locations in the body to provide similar health benefits but without needles. #history #massage #china #egypt #greece #india #indigobodymassage #acupressure (at Indigo Body Massage by Jessie)

Algorithm quickly simulates a roll of loaded dice
The fast and efficient generation of random numbers has long been an important challenge. For centuries, games of chance have relied on the roll of a die, the flip of a coin, or the shuffling of cards to bring some randomness into the proceedings. In the second half of the 20th century, computers started taking over that role, for applications in cryptography, statistics, and artificial intelligence, as well as for various simulations — climatic, epidemiological, financial, and so forth.
MIT researchers have now developed a computer algorithm that might, at least for some tasks, churn out random numbers with the best combination of speed, accuracy, and low memory requirements available today. The algorithm, called the Fast Loaded Dice Roller (FLDR), was created by MIT graduate student Feras Saad, Research Scientist Cameron Freer, Professor Martin Rinard, and Principal Research Scientist Vikash Mansinghka, and it will be presented next week at the 23rd International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics.
Simply put, FLDR is a computer program that simulates the roll of dice to produce random integers. The dice can have any number of sides, and they are “loaded,” or weighted, to make some sides more likely to come up than others. A loaded die can still yield random numbers — as one cannot predict in advance which side will turn up — but the randomness is constrained to meet a preset probability distribution. One might, for instance, use loaded dice to simulate the outcome of a baseball game; while the superior team is more likely to win, on a given day either team could end up on top.
With FLDR, the dice are “perfectly” loaded, which means they exactly achieve the specified probabilities. With a four-sided die, for example, one could arrange things so that the numbers 1,2,3, and 4 turn up exactly 23 percent, 34 percent, 17 percent, and 26 percent of the time, respectively.
To simulate the roll of loaded dice that have a large number of sides, the MIT team first had to draw on a simpler source of randomness — that being a computerized (binary) version of a coin toss, yielding either a 0 or a 1, each with 50 percent probability. The efficiency of their method, a key design criterion, depends on the number of times they have to tap into this random source — the number of “coin tosses,” in other words — to simulate each dice roll.
In a landmark 1976 paper, the computer scientists Donald Knuth and Andrew Yao devised an algorithm that could simulate the roll of loaded dice with the maximum efficiency theoretically attainable. “While their algorithm was optimally efficient with respect to time,” Saad explains, meaning that literally nothing could be faster, “it is inefficient in terms of the space, or computer memory, needed to store that information.” In fact, the amount of memory required grows exponentially, depending on the number of sides on the dice and other factors. That renders the Knuth-Yao method impractical, he says, except for special cases, despite its theoretical importance.
FLDR was designed for greater utility. “We are almost as time efficient,” Saad says, “but orders of magnitude better in terms of memory efficiency.” FLDR can use up to 10,000 times less memory storage space than the Knuth-Yao approach, while taking no more than 1.5 times longer per operation.
For now, FLDR’s main competitor is the Alias method, which has been the field’s dominant technology for decades. When analyzed theoretically, according to Freer, FLDR has one clear-cut advantage over Alias: It makes more efficient use of the random source — the “coin tosses,” to continue with that metaphor — than Alias. In certain cases, moreover, FLDR is also faster than Alias in generating rolls of loaded dice.
FLDR, of course, is still brand new and has not yet seen widespread use. But its developers are already thinking of ways to improve its effectiveness through both software and hardware engineering. They also have specific applications in mind, apart from the general, ever-present need for random numbers. Where FLDR can help most, Mansinghka suggests, is by making so-called Monte Carlo simulations and Monte Carlo inference techniques more efficient. Just as FLDR uses coin flips to simulate the more complicated roll of weighted, many-sided dice, Monte Carlo simulations use a dice roll to generate more complex patterns of random numbers.
The United Nations, for instance, runs simulations of seismic activity that show when and where earthquakes, tremors, or nuclear tests are happening on the globe. The United Nations also carries out Monte Carlo inference: running random simulations that generate possible explanations for actual seismic data. This works by conducting a second series of Monte Carlo simulations, which randomly test out alternative parameters for an underlying seismic simulation to find the parameter values most likely to reproduce the observed data. These parameters contain information about when and where earthquakes and nuclear tests might actually have occurred.
“Monte Carlo inference can require hundreds of thousands of times more random numbers than Monte Carlo simulations,” Mansinghka says. “That’s one big bottleneck where FLDR could really help. Monte Carlo simulation and inference algorithms are also central to probabilistic programming, an emerging area of AI with broad applications.”
Ryan Rifkin, Director of Research at Google, sees great potential for FLDR in this regard. “Monte Carlo inference algorithms are central to modern AI engineering … and to large-scale statistical modeling,” says Rifkin, who was not involved in the study. “FLDR is an extremely promising development that may lead to ways to speed up the fundamental building blocks of random number generation, and might help Google make Monte Carlo inference significantly faster and more energy efficient.”
Despite its seemingly bright future, FLDR almost did not come to light. Hints of it first emerged from a previous paper the same four MIT researchers published at a symposium in January, which introduced a separate algorithm. In that work, the authors showed that if a predetermined amount of memory were allocated for a computer program to simulate the roll of loaded dice, their algorithm could determine the minimum amount of “error” possible — that is, how close one comes toward meeting the designated probabilities for each side of the dice.
If one doesn’t limit the memory in advance, the error can be reduced to zero, but Saad noticed a variant with zero error that used substantially less memory and was nearly as fast. At first he thought the result might be too trivial to bother with. But he mentioned it to Freer who assured Saad that this avenue was worth pursuing. FLDR, which is error-free in this same respect, arose from those humble origins and now has a chance of becoming a leading technology in the realm of random number generation. That’s no trivial matter given that we live in a world that’s governed, to a large extent, by random processes — a principle that applies to the distribution of galaxies in the universe, as well as to the outcome of a spirited game of craps.

Best rollaway and folding beds
The top 10 picks you’ll see below as best rollaway / folding beds are fruit of 2700 work hours & 84 beds  we reviewed so far. Initial picks were made by our panel of expert contributors (material technology engineers and sleep experts) and the pool of data we have so far includes over 15,000 personal experiences from 5 independent sources.
This guide is updated either when the pool of data we’re using for the statistical analysis grows by type 10% or every three months, whichever comes first.
All types and sizes included
With each subsequent update, we adjusted our picks o make the list as well-rounded (based on reader feedback) as possible. We kept adding new types of roll away, foldable, portable and collapsible beds, cots and mattresses to cater to different needs and pocket-depths.
Not to toot our own horn but it’s fair to say that, whatever the type of foldable / portable beds for adults you’re looking for (including folding cots, which is our latest addition), you’ll find it represented among our picks.
Best rollaway bed – top 11
Best rollaway bed overall - Milliard Diplomat with extra-firm folding foam mattress
This guide has seen about two dozen updates so far and the milliard premium has been our top pick from the get-go.
Is about seven months to initially publish our picks and it’s been well over two years since then. So, that’s almost 3 years now of this milliard being the top dog in the category.
That almost never happens in home products
We’ve been reviewing sleep-related products for longer than we care to remember and we rarely see a product being the top pick for so long. It happened only a few times, but it’s almost a rule that we only see it in less competitive niches (typically outdoor sleep).
In a niche as competitive as guest beds for home use (excluding air mattresses), it’s a small miracle. We usually see at least 3 to 4 products locking horns for the top spot. If we exclude the milliard premium and look at our data, the longest we’ve seen a bed occupying the very top is 14 months.
In those terms, this milliard is an exception. It’s now closing in on 36 months of being the best rollaway bed, which is a phenomenon in its own right.
One main reason for the dominance
As we mentioned, both the formula and the product range are tweaked over time to paint a clearer picture. The tweaks in the statistical analysis are most frequent in the value for money category.
So, the explanation for the dominance of milliard premium can be summed up as being at the sweet spot between price and quality.
Simply put, there beds that are similar in quality cost much more than the beds in its price range are of sub-par quality in at least one aspect we rate.
With that in mind, it’s not a surprise that milliard premium is also one of the most popular models among users.
Hundreds of them shared their experience with the milliard on Amazon alone. It’s so popular, that we have seen products and new arrivals trying to mimic the look & design of the mechanism. None of them stood the test of time, primarily because of the foam quality.
You can copy a mechanism/design, but including high-quality foldable memory foam mattress with it is a whole different story. That’s why we see similar products hitting the market, having some initial success but not lasting, as the foam starts to break and lose shape. In our experience, the one year mark is typically when user complaints start pouring in and dramatically affect the rating.
The link to the original milliard premium is below.
Runner up - LUCID "Fold & Hide" folding bed
The runner-up in the category comes from a reputable company and it’s very similar in design and foam quality is the milliard. It’s also a time-tested product with a solid 10 year warranty backing by the manufacturer (on the foam).
Another thing that’s constant and similar to the milliard is the satisfaction of users.
With the warranty in mind, the social doesn’t come as a surprise because it’s the foam that makes or breaks a fold up bed in the long run. It’s rarely the frame.
Who will choose it?
At the time of the last update to this guide the lucid rollaway bed with folding memory foam mattress has a somewhat lower price tag compared to the milliard premium and diplomat.
So, if you’re a conservative buyer on a budget, this model from lucid might be your choice.
You can see the hundreds of user reviews it currently has an Amazon alone by following the link below.
Milliard Premium fold away bed
Milliard is the only manufacturer with two models in our top 10. If you have in mind the volume of roll away beds we reviewed so far, that fact alone speaks volume about the quality of their beds.
So, let’s take a moment here to explain the differences between the premium and the top-rated Diplomat. First of all (and possibly most important), the mattress of the premium version is not as thick (5 vs. 4 inches) and not as firm. Milliard describes the foam used for the month as “extra-firm,” while the foam of the premium as medium firm (the density of the foam is the same – 2.5 lbs).
Secondly, the premium comes on the cot size, one of the comment is available both as folding Cot and in twin size.
Lastly, there is a difference in the base material – the premium uses mesh and the Diplomat is wire lattice.
Zinus resort roll away bed with a folding memory foam mattress
The main difference between Zinus resort and other models that made it to the list our picks for the best roll away bed is obvious - it’s the design of the frame and the thickness of the foldable mattress.
The foldable bed frame is more intricate and includes side covers that hide the space under the bed and the mattress is 5 inches thick. Four inches out of five are high-density foam and one in which is memory foam.
Finally, it’s fair to mention that our statistical model includes what we call a “data volume adjustment factor”. It’s a fancy way of saying that we have less data to go on with this model than the Milliard Diplomat.
A caveat about price comparison
Granted, comparing the price without talking about sizes is not really fair. The Twin is 38 inches wide and the Milliard Diplomat is Cot size (3.05 inches wide).
If you go a size down (narrow Twin for guest room, 30 inches wide), this version of the Zinus is in the sun price range as the Milliard Diplomat or the lucid fold and hide.
Who will choose it?
At first glance, this Zinus doesn’t look like a rollaway bed at all. Add the fact that it boasts a 5-inch thick mattress and you get what can easily be best guest bed for you if you like the design with the covered sides. Without getting to the nitty-gritty of how we rate the foam quality, we can say that it’s every bit as good (if not better if you account for the thickness) as any.
Folding Bed (box-spring) - Edward Original
If we didn’t have the value for money rating, the original Edward guest folding bed with a box-spring mattress would probably be at the very top.
In terms of the word durability and longevity, comparing foam-only roll out beds to the Edward box-spring is not really an option.
We said that this would be our pick for the most comfortable and best guest bed overall, were it not for the price.
Who will choose the Edward?
Edward Original roll out bed is significantly costlier than any other option on the list.
The price is not a surprise if you have in mind the fact that the Edward original is the rollaway guest bed that combines foam and springs.
To put it differently - it’s the closest you can get to the longevity, durability & feel of a regular bed with rollaway models.
So, if price is not the primary decision point but rather the comfort of guests and long-term value, we’d say that your search can easily end with Edward Original.
Lucid fold up bed
Since we initially published this guide, we received at least a dozen of requests include Queen rollaway beds. The response to each of those emails was the same - they rarely come in queen-size and the ones that do are not foldable - they’re basically Queen or Full sized bed on wheels.
So, we did the next best thing – include a queen-size fold up bed that pairs well with a queen rollaway frame, but is collapsible / portable and can be used on its own (as a sofa) or stored away during the day.
A combo not many people think of
Our choice here comes from Lucid. It wasn’t a hard decision since the lucid also makes queen-size frames to go with it. As we mentioned, strictly speaking, there are no Queen or Full size rollaway bed that are of the same type we're analyzing here (fold up).
On top of that, if you get two of these in Twin XL size, you get a King. This combo is a great idea for guest rooms – two nice sofas for the days and a guest bed for 3 adults (76 x 80 inches).
Obviously, this is a unique product and list, which is why we have a separate more in depth review for it, you can see it here.
If you go by the number of reviews, this would be by far the most popular bed here, with over 1,200 reviews just on Amazon. To see what people are saying about it, follow the link to the original product below.
ibed in a box and ibed corner collapsible
There are two products for my ibed that we feel deserve a mention here - I ibed in a box fold up bed cot and the ibed corner.
The former is more of an honorary mention because we don’t have enough data to rate it. The fact that we are mentioning it here is a result of about 20 people emailing us with their experiences praising I bed in a box and asking us to review it.
The latter (ibed corner) is one of the most popular fold away bed for guests and the budget-friendly option. The foldable foam mattress of this ibed is 1 inch thinner compared to the top choices (3 inches thick), but the compactness (if that’s a word) is second to none.
If those two factors are crucial, this ibed will definitely catch your eye.
Folding ottoman bed
If you’re looking for a fold out ottoman bed, our top two choices are the milliard guest hideaway and the handy living sleeper.
The overall rating of two is the same (90/100). With that said, we give the handy living sleeper a slight edge, primarily because of the versatility in colors available and slight difference in the price.
On the other hand, the milliard is slightly bigger when folded into an ottoman.
The difference is other aspects like the material of the cover, sturdiness of the ottoman frame and the cushions are too small to report on. Finally, if company reputation is a concern, both companies are in good standings. The latter company is well-known for chairs and sectionals (like the Handy Living convert-a-couch).
Bottom line - both folding ottoman beds are top-tier and, ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference.
Fold up cot by Coleman
The category of fold up cot beds was is the "youngest" here. We only added it 6 months ago but that doesn't take away from the reliability of our ratings.
In fact, it was the easiest to work with since we have many featured contributors in the outdoors arena. The process of choosing came down to emailing 16 of them and asking about their experiences with fold up cots over the years. Twelve of them gave their vote to the Coleman ComfortRest.
Granted, in the emails, we did mention that we're looking for a cot that would perform well for indoor use, as a folding cot bed. We then proceeded to gather the necessary data on this Coleman and two other products. We ended up with a significant gap in ratings between the top pick and the runner up.
References - testing and rating
The remainder of this guide is dedicated to two things:
explaining the process we went through to review the guest beds and get to the list of products we could label as best and stand behind our words
what to look for if you’re not shopping online or if none of our recommendations catches your eye
About our ratings of the fold up beds
As you stressed a few times, we received no free products or testing samples to review. It’s a way of ensuring that the process is fully objective and based on tangible data.
We started out by consulting our panel of experts for the initial picks. The way we see it, this has two upsides.
First of all, it eliminates many sub-par products that would otherwise, to be honest, waste a lot of our time and resources.
Secondly, it allows us to be thorough in the analysis
Whenever we can, we buy the products we review. In the interest of full disclosure, this wasn’t the case with roll away beds because we simply didn’t have the resources. So the ratings is so rely heavily on the statistical model we developed years ago and tweaked over time.
Today, the core the analytics remains the same (when we can’t to buy all the beds and test them personally), but it’s tweaked to the specifics of the product. It’s only natural, because the same quality categories don’t apply for all bed types.
Even when we could buy and personally test the fold up beds we review, the analytics would still play a major role in reaching the ratings, simply because nothing beats volume. In other words, what we like is not necessarily what most people will like, no matter how objective try to be.
Bottom line, the larger the data-volume, the more accurate the ratings. It also means that each subsequent update paints a better picture about the quality of the beds.
What it all means applied specifically to reviewing rollaway beds
Primarily, it meant clearly defining what qualifies as “high-quality.” With "classic products", things are not so intricate because there are more variables here.
Speaking in broad terms, all our ratings can be grouped into primary and secondary (by how much of an impact they have on the overall rating).
Just for reference, let’s take a moment here to look at a few.
On-arrival assembly
This is one of the quality categories that’s unique for rollaway beds. It doesn’t qualify as primary because it does this make much of a difference in the long run.
To be clear, but were talking about here is how easy/hard it is to put the bed together once it is on your doorstep (like frame and wheels assembly).
If there are on arrival problems with putting the bed together, those would be accounted for in the “on-arrival issues” along with any defects in the craftsmanship.
Stability
Stability is a primary factor with a few sub-factors. The crucial part is the stability of the bed frame and what qualifies as a sub-factor are ties (if any).
Plainly speaking, it’s meant to describe how well a bed performs in two aspects:
Subject feeling of frame stability (beds with a lower rating in this category would feel flimsy)
The "pieces" staying in place
Quality of the folding foam mattress
Another primary factor and possibly the most intricate one.
The grade of the foam used in fold up beds will not be as high as that used in classics.
That’s not a minus per se. Here’s why…
If the foam was of the same density and ILD (indentation load deflection) and thickness as that of a classic models, it would be much harder to fold and store the bed.
So, for a good guest bed, you’re aiming for density and ILD that would be at the sweet spot between comfort, support and malleability.
In terms of density, we found the sweet spot here to be around 2.5 lbs. The higher you go, the harder it becomes to collapse the bed away. This lowers the portability.
On this side note, this is one of the reasons we were so impressed with the Edwards original. If you know the manufacturing side of things, you know how hard it is to make portable bed for adults that includes springs.
To simplify it
Everything we said above might sound a bit too much to take in, so let us simplify it by summing it up into two factors of foam quality.
A great way to judge it are the warranty terms - it would make little financial sense for company to offer a long warranty if the foam in their products “breaks” after six months.
So if you don’t want to spend days researching, the shortcut would be looking at the warranty terms for the foam. Making a sturdy yet collapsible bed frame is not as hard as offering high-quality foldable memory foam mattress to go with the frame and base.
Sturdiness of the frame
Initially, we used durability and longevity of the frame as primary factors. That’s not the case anymore because there are too many products with similar frame quality.
Instead, sturdiness is a secondary factor included in all of the following ratings: stability, durability and longevity.
A side note
One of the more common questions we received pertains to the difference between durability and longevity. It’s pretty simple - durability describes the capacity of a bed to take on weight at one moment while longevity describes how well it performs long-term (without developing structural defects).
Customer service and Better Business Bureau rating
This is an important one - it goes beyond prompt replies to emails or return claims. Listing a warranty is one thing how efficient the company is when a customer wants to claim it paints a better picture.
It takes some elbow grease to get to this rating because we basically have to count every experience a customer had and how promptly it was addressed.
As we said, it goes beyond answering an email. To put it simply, what we like to see here is the company address them claims without giving you the runaround or avoiding your return request (if defined in their warranty policy).
To make it more accurate, we always take the time to look into the Better Business Bureau rating of the company that manufactures the foldaway beds we review.
Maintenance
The “ease of maintenance” is pretty self-explanatory. It comes down to a 2 things:
whether the bed comes with a cover and, if yes, whether it’s machine-washable and rated for the dryer
whether it comes with a bag/sack two-story the whole thing
Even the best folding beds often don’t include a storing bag for storing when not in use. You often have to get one separately.
Do the wheels lock in place?
Wheel-locks are not a must for a good rollaway bed for adults. If the frame is sturdy, the weight of an average adult will be enough to keep the construction stable.
With that said, if you’re an adult but on the lighter side, it’s probably a good idea to consider whether the wheels lock.

AMD
The second-generation Ryzen chips announced last week are now out, and reviews have hit the ‘Net. Unlike the situation last week, we’re now free to talk about what has changed in the second-generation chips and where their improvements lie.
Model Cores/Threads Clock base/boost/GHz TDP/W Cooler Price Ryzen 7 2700X 8/16 3.7/4.3 105 Wraith Prism (LED) $329 Ryzen 7 2700 8/16 3.2/4.1 65 Wraith Spire (LED) $299 Ryzen 5 2600X 6/12 3.6/4.2 95 Wraith Spire $229 Ryzen 5 2600 6/12 3.4/3.9 65 Wraith Stealth $199
AMD is calling the new parts “Zen+.” This isn’t a new architecture; rather, it’s a tweaked version of the first-generation Zen architecture. The basic layout of the chips remains the same: each contains two core complexes (CCXes), which are blocks of four cores, eight threads, and 8MB level 3 cache, joined with AMD’s Infinity Fabric.
Architecturally, the biggest improvements seem to have been made to memory and cache latencies. AMD says that the cache latency for level 1, level 2, and level 3 caches and main memory have all improved, reduced by up to 13 percent, 34 percent, 16 percent, and 11 percent, respectively. Tech Report’s benchmarks show improved main-memory latency, and PC Perspective found improved communications latency between CCXes.
Overall, AMD says that Zen+ achieves about 3 percent more instructions per cycle (IPC) than the original Zen. This was pretty much spot on with what Anandtech found.
The second-generation parts also have a much smarter version of Precision Boost, AMD’s turbo boosting system. The first-generation chips have a base clock speed, an all-cores boost speed, and a two-thread boost. The highest speeds can only be hit by a single core (two threads); as soon as more than two threads need to have their performance boosted above baseline, the whole chip drops to the all-cores boost speed. Under lighter workloads—those that can use more than two fast cores but fewer than 16—this tends to leave some performance on the table: there’s enough power/thermal headroom to run, say, two or four cores at higher speeds, but the chip simply can’t do it.
Enlarge/ The original Precision Boost only offered its top speed for two thread workloads. The new Precision Boost allows boosting for any number of threads.
Precision Boost 2 addresses this: it can boost any number of cores, just as long as there’s enough power and cooling available. Critically, this means that it can run two or even three core workloads at something higher than the all-cores boost level.
The new chips are also built on Global Foundries’ 12nm process rather than the first-generation 14nm. AMD says that the overall die size and transistor counts are unchanged from the first generation: the company isn’t using the smaller process to pack the chip’s transistors closer together. Rather, it’s getting about another 250MHz and has reduced voltages by about 50mV.
Taken together, the new chips offer an incremental improvement over the old ones: a few hundred more MHz and slightly more work done with each cycle.
First-generation Ryzen chips generally trailed Intel’s processors in single-threaded workloads and most games due to their inferior single-threaded performance. However, they pulled ahead in multithreaded workloads due to their superior core and thread counts. Intel’s six-core, 12-thread Coffee Lake chips closed that gap somewhat, but in tasks with 16 compute-bound threads, the sheer core count of the Ryzens created an unassailable advantage.
The benchmarks of the second-generation parts show a similar pattern. The improved clock speeds and IPC have shrunk the gap in single-threaded tasks and games, but it hasn’t been eliminated: Intel’s i7-8700K is still the best all-around gaming chip, albeit by a smaller margin this time around. But in those tasks where first-generation Ryzen was ahead, second generation is even more ahead.
For example, per PC Perspective, the Intel i7-8700K has frame rates 12-percent higher in Grand Theft Auto V, 29-percent higher in Forza 7, and 7-percent higher in Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and, in single-threaded, Cinebench has an 11-percent performance lead. But by contrast, the Ryzen 2700X is 27-percent quicker in multithreaded Cinebench and 23-percent faster in the POV-Ray ray tracer. These workloads trivially scale to multiple cores, so having more processors and more simultaneous threads is a big advantage for AMD.
And again, as we saw with first-generation parts, it’s not that the AMD chips are bad at gaming. They’re just not quite as quick as the fastest gaming chip available. If you’re building a pure gaming machine, then the Intel chip is probably the one to go for. But if you have broader interests—software development, 3D graphics, even video encoding—then you’re not going to go wrong with the AMD chip.
The second-generation Ryzens work with the same chipsets as the first generation, but AMD also has a new chipset, the X470. The X470 has a couple of notable features: first, it has some integrated USB 3.1 generation 2 (10 gigabit per second) controllers; second, it has StoreMI, a hybrid disk system that enables the use of SSDs (and RAM) to accelerate spinning disks. StoreMI works essentially like RAID 0: the capacity of the system is simply the sum of the SSD and HDD’s capacity, and StoreMI handles moving blocks of data between fast storage and cold storage as appropriate.
This kind of hybrid disk system has its virtues: gamers in particular may have huge Steam libraries, which are prohibitively expensive to store on SSD. A system that puts the games you’re playing actively on the fast SSD, leaving those that you play less often on the slow HDD, is very useful.
However, this kind of system always leaves us a little wary. In practice, most computer users are very bad at making backups, and a RAID 0-type system—where failure of either the SSD or the HDD will leave all your data corrupted and inaccessible—increases the risk of data loss. Systems tied to the motherboard are also a little troublesome: should your motherboard or processor die, you won’t be able to stick the disks in another machine to recover your data unless that other machine also has an X470 chipset. We would, in general, much prefer to see operating system-level hybrid disks instead of these motherboard-provided systems (and this applies both to StoreMI for AMD and Intel’s comparable RST).
We also don’t know how well StoreMI performs yet; the final shipping software and drivers aren’t available yet.
It’s not about the chips; it’s about the trajectory
Enlarge/ Ryzen 7 2700X in box.
Overall, the second-generation Ryzens have almost something of an Intel feel to them. Intel for many years had what it called the tick-tock development model: it would alternate between introducing new architectures (“tocks”) and refined versions of those architectures on smaller manufacturing processors (“ticks”). Zen+ isn’t quite an Intel “tick”—Intel’s ticks actually make the processor die smaller, which AMD hasn’t done for Zen+—but it’s nonetheless a small architectural improvement to focus on particular weak spots of the Zen design, paired with a new process.
And critically for AMD, Intel has had to abandon tick-tock due to difficulties with its manufacturing process. Intel’s development of 14nm and 10nm manufacturing have both been delayed, forcing the company to produce multiple generations of processors on 14nm and delaying the transition to 10nm.
The second-generation Ryzens are an incremental improvement on the first generation, but the picture they paint is of a company on the right trajectory. Sure, Intel’s chips are, especially for gamers, the absolute performance champions. But Intel feels like a company that’s struggling to improve on what it has. AMD’s chips might be ever-so-slightly slower, but the company is proving that it can deliver: it gave us a solid first-generation Ryzen, and, about a year later, it has released a superior second generation. It’s heading on the right path while Intel feels lost.
Let’s block ads! (Why?)
