Wrecker Wednesday, and here you GO!

Finally finished that one-shot of Wrecker and Clarissa Mao chatting while she's getting her medication.

Hey! Hey! Wanna see my toys?

One of the things that will always warm my heart is the genuine emotion that occurs between a sailor and a ship. I love it when it is depicted in any form of media.

Things like:

- The song Eight Bells by the Jolly Rogers

- the Millennium Falcon and all her pilots and captains

- the Black Pearl and both Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa. They always return to her in the series

- the crew of the Rocinante from the Expanse among others.

Alex Kamal and the birth of confidence

Shortly after we meet Alex, he confesses to his shipmates that he was 'a glorified bus driver' during his 20 year career as a transport pilot in the MCRN. He later tells Amos that the Martian navy basically told him he wasn't good enough to ever fly a Corvette-class Light Frigate like the Rocinante.

Alex goes from doubting he can even fly the Roci when they steal ... um, er, appropriate the Tochi/Rocinante to laughing giddily while he says "I'm doin' it! I'm doin' it!"

His confidence and pride in being the Roci's pilot grows. We can see his reluctance when he hands docking control over to Tycho Station. It's his ship, goddam it, and he doesn't want anyone else to fly her. Alex later puts himself through multiple simulations after he decides his performance duing the Roci's first mission wasn't up to scratch. No one else tell's Alex to do this.

Alex's confidence and pride drive him to become a badass gunship pilot, part of the Rocinante's crew that those in the Belt come to fear and respect.

There's a price to be paid for this though. I'll write later about Alex's family and how his desire to pilot the Roci affect's their relationships.

Me: *names my new computer Pinus Contorta because of The Expanse and trees and the symbolism of growth through fire*

My dad, who now has an app that shows him how our internet connection is and what's connected to it: who's connected to our internet with a device called "Penis Contortia"?!

I finished another Expanse watch through. I had heard, previously, that the whole series is inspired D&D, so this time I watched the whole thing like it was Critical Roll or some similar D&D thing. And I have to say that it worked. Shad’s death? He couldn’t play anymore so the gave him an exit. Got some new people who can play? Here’s Bobby, Clarissa, Bull, etc. Even when it’s not the crew of the Roci, Filip, Marco, Avasarala, Mao, all feel like either player characters or a DM controlled NPC… and while I don’t really love D&D (I’m part of a group that plays once a month and have been all through COVID) this little experiment has helped me enjoy it more…

This sketch I completed above was based off of a recent chapter in Far Past the Ring, where Naomi gives Tech a tour of the Rocinante (after he borrowed a Belter’s hoodie—which you know he’s not giving back). I thought it looked great.

I made the mistake of showing this to my husband and youngest daughter. His response?!

“IS THAT A YOUNG HOT HANK HILL TRYING TO FLIRT WITH NAOMI FROM THE EXPANSE?”

Then my toddler grabbed my iPad, and immediately pointed at the screen and screamed:

“IT DADDY! IT DADDY!”

Of which the poor man had nothing to add.

FWIW, Tech would love propane and propane accessories. Whether or not he’d be a Texan is anyone’s guess.

He was pointing a gun at her and then they were having banter and now they're crying and they're gonna fuck and she's such a sub and Alex loves his wife SO MUCH but his wife is a spaceship that's human for a day and they're maybe soulmates??? And the roles of Pilot and Pilot-ed but there's so much equal give and take like she's so responsive to him and he's so loving and respectful of her and they're an old married couple like AAAAHHH
