Talkies is the Bay Area's best unconventional, experimental, and multi-media live comedy event. At Talkies, comedians, writers, improvisers, and performers work outside of their regular routines to push the boundaries of comedy; PowerPoint presentations, characters, and off-stage antics are the order of the day.
Started in the basement of San Francisco’s Lost Weekend Video store, this monthly show has been an incubator for many unique comedy talents spreading their wings on weird flights of fancy. Past guest performers have included Aparna Nancherla, Brent Weinbach, Ron Lynch, Frankie Quinones, Myq Kaplan, Sad Vicious, Calvin Johnson, and Beth Lisick. The show is a regular feature of SF Sketchfest and almost always sells out.

TALKIES is produced by Nick Stargu, Aviva Siegel, George Chen and Will Scovill

Live Review: Beth Stelling Makes A Triumphant Return to Chicago
Love was in the air during Beth Stelling’s Dec. 7 performance at Thalia Hall. Chicago fans were thrilled to see the comedian back in the city where she started her stand-up career. The fact that she enlisted her Entertaining Julia cohorts, The Puterbaugh Sisters, to open up the show was the icing on an already delicious comedy cake. The Thursday night show marked Stelling’s first stand-up set…

Fun Pics of Jonathan Van Ness, Tig Notaro, and More From Bentzen Ball – Washingtonian
Bentzen Ball will take over venues around DC this weekend, and the local comedy festival is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary. Curated and hosted by Tig Notaro and co-produced by Brightest Young Things, it has become a crucial annual gathering for humor-loving Washingtonians. This year’s fest—which benefits José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen—includes Maria Bamford, Roxane Gay, Jaboukie Young-White, and lots more. One highlight will be a homecoming for comedians born, raised, or educated in the Washington area, including Saturday Night Live alum Jay Pharaoh.
Before the festivities kick off, here’s a look back at some fun moments with people who’ve participated in past years, captured by Brightest Young Things’s photo team as the comedians wandered around DC in the days around their performances.
Tig Notaro, host and co-founder of the festival, mimics President Obama at the White House’s bowling lane in 2014. Notaro holds day-camp-like bonding events for performers, and the Obama White House was a frequent stop. The last bowling trip was just before the 2016 election.
Tumblr media
Dripping in fake blood, Annapolis native Brandie Posey, er, poses outside a 2016 Bentzen Ball afterparty hosted at the 9:30 Club. The red splatter came courtesy of Richmond metal greats GWAR, who performed—what a lineup!—after Weird Al Yankovich rocked out on the same stage.
Tumblr media
Michelle Buteau and Jordan Carlos may be known as the comedians trying to figure out how exactly to “adult” on NPR’s Adulting podcast, but BYT named them the Nicest People at 2018’s Bentzen Ball. The festival typically gives out a Miss Congeniality-type award each year in the form of a t-shirt.
Tumblr media
Ben’s Chili Bowl is next to the Bentzen Ball’s usual venue, Lincoln Theatre. On the festival’s first year, the restaurant hosted an open mic night in a back room with surprise acts like Nick Offerman. This photo is from 2013, when two comedic duos, Garfunkel and Oates’s Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci, and the Lampshades’s Kate Flannery and Scott Robinson, were clearly very excited to try a half-smoke.
Tumblr media
John Hodgman semi-adopted this dog at a 2014 pizza party in Brightest Young Thing’s WeWork space at the Wonder Bread Factory. No one seemed to know where the dog came from, but everyone remembers that Hodgman doted on it for the whole night. Hodgman has performed at Bentzen Ball twice–once dressed as Ayn Rand.
Tumblr media
Segway tours of the Mall were often popular with visiting comedians. Organizers hosted the tour at the first festival in 2009, and through the grapevine, performers in other years demanded their own turn. Notaro, Kate Berlant, and improv group Wild Horses are among the Segway-ers seen here.
Tumblr media
DC was buzzing when the Queer Eye stars visited Nancy Pelosi on the Hill in April. Jonathan Van Ness and Pelosi go back: In 2018, Van Ness hosted Pelosi for a live taping of his podcast, Getting Curious. Here, Antoni Porowski joined them for a group photo.
Tumblr media
Pelosi treated her event with Van Ness in 2018 as a fun afternoon, asking if she could bring her grandkids along. Van Ness used his famed grooming skills to fix Pelosi’s bangs during a photo shoot.
Tumblr media
Improv group Wild Horses is made of four best friends: Stephanie Allynne, Mary Holland, Lauren Lapkus, and Erin Whitehead. In 2014, before they performed at the Kennedy Center, they bowled at the White House (and couldn’t help doing their own Obama-with-a-ball pose).
Tumblr media
Seaton Smith—who is returning to DC this year as part of the Homecoming lineup—learned how to craft (and drink) the perfect cocktail at Columbia Room last year. The comedian has performed in the festival many times over the years.
Tumblr media
The Library of Congress opened its doors in 2014 for a tour of its comedy archives for the festival performers. The archive contains recordings of classic acts, like Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s On First.” Notaro arranged the tour as part of her vision of the festival: comedians bonding and celebrating comedy.
Tumblr media
In 2014, organizers took participants out for a boat trip on the Potomac. The Puterbaugh Sisters, Liza Treyger, Katie McVay, and Stephanie Hass rushed to get a photo with the Washington monument at just the right moment.
Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Two Beer Brewing releases this year’s Fresh Hop IPA
Tumblr media
Press Release
SEATTLE ... Fresh Hop IPA season is (almost) upon us. Two Beers Brewing Co. continues their tradition of releasing the first Fresh Hop IPA of the season, with draft and package product available starting Friday, August 3 at The Woods tasting room in SoDo, and select locations around Seattle, with wider distribution on Monday, August 6.
First brewed in 2009, Fresh Hop IPA enters its ninth season on the Two Beers lineup, remaining one of the Seattle-based brewery’s most popular releases. A true labor of love, Fresh Hop IPA is made with fresh Centennial and Cluster hops from beloved fifth generation hop farmers, Puterbaugh Farm in Yakima Valley. The hops are handpicked by dozens of staff and volunteers on the brewery dock; the process allows Two Beers to go from hop bine to brew in less than 24 hours for an exceptional finished product.
The hop harvest arrived earlier than expected this year, allowing Founder and CEO, Joel VandenBrink, to once again hand pick bines of Centennial and Cluster hops at Puterbaugh Farms in Yakima Valley, before trekking back to Seattle to harvest hops over cold beers with the most dedicated hop fans. This year’s Fresh Hop IPA will feature Centennial hops, giving the brew a juicy citrus aroma with hints of grapefruit and passion fruit, and Cluster hops, which tend more towards bitter and earthy. Fresh Hop IPA (6.2% ABV/70 IBUs) is dark straw in color with light caramel malt tones, and resembles an aggressively dry-hopped IPA, but packs the punch and flavor only fresh hops can deliver. In addition to the fresh picked Centennial and Cluster hops, this beer features locally grown Amarillo, Cascade, and Citra hops, helping this popular seasonal achieve its bright and delightfully bitter flavor.
“Every step of our Fresh Hop IPA process is a celebration of what makes beer in the Pacific Northwest so great!” said Joel VandenBrink, Founder & CEO of Two Beers Brewing Co. “There’s a certain joy in being able to connect our beer fans directly to the local ingredients that go into Fresh Hop IPA.”

About Puterbaugh Farms Puterbaugh Farms is a 5th generation hop farming family, growing hops in the Yakima Valley of Washington State since the early 1930's. After hearing of the fertility of Washington State's Yakima Valley, Noel Charvet - a French immigrant - moved his family from Canada in 1932 and planted his roots for a hop farm. Today, Stacy, his brother, sisters, and two sons now work the 1,200+ acre hop farm. They take pride in knowing that four generations have worked to grow and harvest only the highest quality crops, paving a path for their growing 5th generation to carry on the legacy.
About Two Beers Brewing Co. Founded in 2007 by Joel Vandenbrink in a 140 square foot storage unit, Two Beers Brewing Co. has been brewing and distributing beer to the Pacific Northwest for over a decade. Dedicated to crafting delicious, creative beers with quality Northwest ingredients, Two Beers Brewing is distributed throughout Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho. Visit The Woods tasting room in SoDO (4660 Ohio Ave S. 98134) for a full line up of draft and package product from Two Beers Brewing, Seattle Cider Company, and Sound Craft Seltzer Co. Entertaining Julia, the delightful monthly stand-up show from The Puterbaugh Sisters, is leaning into October and doing a special “Which Witch Is Which?” edition.
Basically, this very nice line-up:
Alison Stevenson Mo Welch Lydia Popovich Candy Lawerence Ryan Singer Casey Ley Alyssa Rusak Lindsay Adams Ricky Carmona
-will perform stand-up as if they are some sort of a witch this Sunday at Akbar in Silverlake. Sounds pretty damn fun (albeit a little spooky perhaps), no?
