Sky Clan Chaplain, Gerrah.
My HC is, that Gerrah was one of the few people Kotallo could bear to have around, and confide in, after his parents were killed. She quickly grew to be a sort of grandmother to him, with long, warm, and consoling embraces when Kotallo was a child, which later changed to deep talks at the campfire as a young soldier, and later yet, turning into a mutually respectful and ever-supporting relationship when he became a celebrated warrior and Marshal.

A good postmortem on Joe Biden's State of the Union by Tim Miller and Will Saletan at The Bulwark. Also, near the beginning Tim speaks with White House Communications Director Ben LaBolt.
Will had some of the more memorable comments.
I'm somewhat paraphrasing, but he made the point that fighting MAGA Republicans is essentially defending America.
He regarded Speaker "MAGA Mike" Johnson as a metaphor for what's happened to the GOP. Tim had commented on MAGA Mike's punchable face. So by implication, MAGA GOP as a whole is quite punchable.
The most fun part of the podcast was saved for last with discussion of Sen. Katie Britt's rather surreal GOP response to the SOTU. Will Saletan observed that she has "redefined bad State of the Union responses".

The president of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), Everett Kelly, said: “Governor DeSantis’ threat to ‘start slitting throats’ of federal employees is dangerous, disgusting, disgraceful and disqualifying.” Among Republican commentators, the columnist Max Boot called DeSantis’s words “deranged” while Bill Kristol, founder of the Bulwark, a conservative site, said the governor was “making a bold play to dominate the maniacal psychopath lane in the Republican primary”.

Kotallo & Tekotteh
Okay, so we all know that Kotallo is down on himself when Aloy first meets him at Stone’s Crest.
He has lost his arm, and the other Marshals, and is dealing with a lot of Heavy Feelings which I have spoken about elsewhere and will not be addressing here.
BUT
Kotallo doesn’t believe he and Aloy can convince Tekotteh to send the Sky Clan challengers to the Kulrut; so much so that he’s reluctant to even try, and it is only because these are Hekarro’s orders that he is here at all.
The thing is, Kotallo has already been here. He’s already had this conversation with Tekotteh. Except it was before Aloy met him; Kotallo was sent to the Bulwark to convince Tekotteh to send the Sky Clan to the Embassy at Barren Light. And he failed.
Sure, he got some of the Sky Clan there; enough that the Embassy could go ahead. But when the other Marshals ask about the Commander, his reply is, “He isn’t yet... aware we left.”
Kotallo didn’t just waltz into the Bulwark and hand-pick a bunch of Sky Clan warriors to take to the Embassy; he was turned away, humiliated by Tekotteh, and that was when he still had his arm. The Sky Clan members who followed him to the Embassy can be assumed to have prior loyalty to Kotallo, from before he became a Marshal, and also unhappy with how Tekotteh runs things.
(See this post by @wings-of-the-ten about their headcannon for Kotallo’s old squad, because I love it)
Back to the matter at hand.
If Kotallo couldn’t convince Tekotteh to attend the Embassy when he was whole, it’s no wonder he is expecting to fail when he is asked to summon him to the Kulrut after his maiming.
Let’s not forget; Regalla’s rebels had been building power since before their ambush at the Embassy. Kotallo tells Aloy that the rebels have been driving machines through the Sky Clan valley. And what has Tekotteh done about it? Jack shit. He hides behind the Bulwark (”used as a coward’s shield”) and does nothing. His lack of action challenging Regalla’s rebels is in itself a slight against Chief Hekarro. Failing to send the Sky Clan to the Embassy signals that he fears Regalla more than he values his Chief. And after what happens at the Embassy, Tekotteh feels that his fear is justified; he now has all the ammunition he needs for his argument to keep the Sky Clan safe behind the Bulwark.
So of course Kotallo doesn’t think he can succeed when Hekarro asks him to bring the Sky Clan challengers to the Kulrut. He already failed once, and now he has to return to the Bulwark a cripple, burdened by the shame of his survival when death in battle would have been more honourable.
As if that wasn’t enough, Hekarro asks Aloy to accompany him. As though it wasn’t insult enough to need backup, the backup comes in the form of an Outlander. She is neither a Marshal, or Tenakth; Kotallo is smarting at the knowledge that Hekarro does not think he can accomplish his task.
Even after confronting Tekotteh, Kotallo can’t see a way forwards except to kill him. That doesn’t sound like our strategically-minded Marshal, who loves a game of Machine Strike and studying Old-World military tactics.
It’s no wonder Kotallo jumps so quickly to suggesting that Tekotteh needs to be removed, permanently, to bring the Sky Clan into line. He had probably been thinking about it anyway. He probably wonders if things at the Embassy would have gone differently, if there had been more Sky Clan soldiers to fight against Regalla. He has probably spent a lot of time second-guessing himself, whilst he recovered from the loss of his arm.
Even killing Tekotteh might not solve the problems in Sky Clan. Kotallo can’t become the new Commander; he forsook his clan to become a Marshal. Chances are one of Tekotteh’s lackeys would take up the leadership, and Sky Clan still would not respond to Hekarro’s summons.
And then he meets Aloy, and she works miracles. She finds a way to bring Tekotteh into line, all without spilling a single drop of blood. For Kotallo, who is one of Hekarro’s Marshals; a peacekeeper; this is the ultimate ideal.
Aloy does more than treat Kotallo as though he is whole, like his lost arm is no matter to her. She does more than defend him to Tekotteh, standing up for him when the Sky Clan Commander would humiliate him because of his injury. She reminds him what is is to be a Marshal. To bring peace and unity to the Clans.
*
I still maintain that Kotallo is The Broken Sky. Whilst you assume it refers to AETHER causing the storms, you don’t get AETHER until after the Kulrut. Who do we get during The Broken Sky? We get Kotallo. Broken because he has lost his arm. Broken because he has lost his friends. Broken because of his honourable exile from Sky Clan. Broken because he feels he is failing in his duty as a Marshal.
I have many feelings about Kotallo, and all of them are LOVE.

The Foods of the Forbidden West
The discord was talking about worldbuilding, as per usual, and we were trying to figure out what the people in Horizon eat/grow. So, armed with the encouragement and companionship of @elsodex, I set out to every major settlement to take pictures of their food and crops. Warning: this is gonna be a long one.
First up on our culinary quest: the Tenakth! And the first of them is the Lowland clan. Let's see the food of Thornmarsh.
Tumblr media
(For every image we look at, we'll start at the top left, move our way down, then go to the next column.)
On the top left there's a basket of artichoke (the only one I found) next to a basket full of fruits. I can't be 100% sure, but I believe the purple/blue fruits are plums, and the red and yellow fruits are apples and pears.
Next image. Left basket has dragon fruit and.. well the other fruit I'm finding difficult to place. At first I thought it was a durian, but looking at images it definitely isn't. The closest fruit I could find was the kiwano, but it looks as though the colors of the rind and the flesh were swapped. The basket in front of it also has the kiwano, as well as... okay I talked to several people about this and we couldn't figure it out. Honestly I think it might be a grub of some kind. Or really large mandarin orange slices? There's a better picture coming up. The basket on the right has the same miscellaneous fruits as before (here it's easier to see the pear), with an addition of onions.
Below that we have our meats and veggies. A basket of radishes, a basket of turnips and carrots, baskets of seagulls (the only unplucked bird we'll see), a basket of fish, and a container of what seems to be nakati, which is a type of eggplant.
on the top right we have a medley of foods, most of which we've seen already. We have nakati, multiple kinds of radishes, fish, dragon fruit, kiwano, and the new addition of bell peppers in the basket on the right. (spoiler alert, we're gonna see kiwano and dragon fruit a lot.)
Up next is the Sky clan, lets see what food they have at The Bulwark:
Tumblr media
Alright so, top left we have some hanging foods, garlic, fish, onions, and what I believe are oranges?
both pictures below are boars, the skyclan is the only place I saw these, though it's possible I missed something.
The whole middle column is meat, with the hanging meat likely being boar, and the bottom being some bird (likely goose), and possibly sides of salmon?
Top right we have more boar and birds, as well as a crate of eggs below them. (I'm struggling to place them, they are speckled and many different colors, which neither geese nor ducks lay, but chickens do not exist.) Next we have sausage, more meats, oranges again, kiwano, dragon fruits, and now tomatoes join the fray.
We have all the same foods found in Thornmarsh here, bell peppers, radishes, kiwano, onions, and dragon fruit.
Next up we have kiwano, dragon fruit, and some bread. Under the table is some already shucked corn.
The final Tenakth clan is the desert clan, and well, they have some interesting things going on in Scalding Spear.
Tumblr media
We've got our usual contenders in these crates, dragon fruit, kiwano, and nakati.
Next we have some racks of ribs, and a coil of sausages I originally mistook for a giant cinnamon bun.
next we have onions, eggplants, plums, pears, apples, corn, and green and red varieties of romaine lettuce.
Back up at the top we have the beginning of an interesting trend: "skewering foods and placing them near a fire". Do I even have to tell you what's in the top pic? say it with me now: dragon fruit and kiwano. there's also some meat that was absolutely not spiked on that wood.
next we have Dragon fruit and kiwano again, this time with bell peppers to shake things up.
At the bottom we have various small sausages and cuts of meat, sitting way too far from that fire to be getting any benefit from it. This level of meat preservation might explain every quest that's in the desert clan.
Now hold on! We're not leaving Scalding Spear yet. You may have noticed the bamboo being used to build the fire pits in the last image. Now you, dear reader, may be wondering where the hell you find bamboo in the middle of a desert. Well the answer is in Yarra's Personal Stash of Shit. (Or Drakka's, I guess, if you kill her. Does he automatically get her stuff? idk.)
Tumblr media
On the left is potted bamboo. There were actually a few of these around her area. There's a few other plants as well, it's interesting that she chooses to cultivate these plants despite the clan's constant need of water. (Additionally, if that bamboo really is cultivated, then it is the only example of farming I've found in the Tenakth.)
On the right is what must be Yarra's pantry. we have an unknown spice in a dish on the left. Kiwano in the middle. The hanging fruits are probably mangoes, the green just looks blue because of the lighting. And other that we have those orange things again. I don't know maybe they're circus peanuts.
Next stop: Plainsong, both the foods and the planted crops.
Tumblr media
Alright, you know the drill, top left is radishes, turnips, carrots, and a two new vegetables: salsify (the black one), and parsnips (the white one).
Under that we have a basket of the same, next to what I believe is a bowl of uncooked rice (though it could be another grain).
Next up we have a colorful collection of veggies. Parsnips, carrots, radishes, eggplants, peppers, romaine lettuce, rice, and scallions (though the leaves aren't correct so it might be something else).
We have rice soaking before it's being cooked (this is done to enhance the flavor and shorten the cooking time).
Then we have some beautiful honeycomb. (Mead, anyone?)
Then we have a nice array of dishes, I'm not going to try to figure out what they all are, but we have: a single baked sweet potato, various bowls of rice, and what seems to be various versions of a dish similar to lau lau. (Though lau lau is made with meat, so I'm not sure what they're using, probably something starchy such as the sweet potato.)
Finally we have some more root vegetables, along with some bamboo. (Waiting to be incorporated into plainsong? To be made into dishes? Exporting to Scalding Spear? Who knows.)
Now for the crops of Plainsong:
Tumblr media
All of these are fairly simple. Up first we have some kind of bean plant, not certain on the variety.
Then we have either bananas or plantains, I'm leaning towards the former.
Then we have sugarcane, older and younger fields respectively.
And I wouldn't know the other if it weren't for these nice ladies, who are harvesting turnips.
Our final cuisine is that of the Oseram tribe. These include pictures from Barren Light, Chainscrape, and Hidden Ember, in that order. (Barren Light did not have Carja food as far as I could tell, at least not visually. The chef was Oseram and her wares were the same as the other two settlements.)
Tumblr media
Okay first up we have an obscene amount of onions, corn, more onions, and.. Okay I really don't know what that is. It was grilled, I can tell you that much. If it's a meat, it's a bird, maybe a turkey patty.
Next we have a pile of sweet potatoes and some kind of flat bread. Somewhere along the lines of pita and naan (fingers crossed for naan).
At the bottom we have a bunch of sausages and some birds.
Chainscrape has this sick meat rack. It has whole boars, sausages, and two types of birds (it seems the ones at the top are turkeys, meaning the rest of the birds we've seen are likely geese). At the top right is more sausage and some pretzels. (I want to see the hook they use to get those down.)
Over at Hidden Ember we have more sweet potatoes and bread.
Radishes and sausage.
A bowl of onions and a leg of Boar.
But no exploration of Oseram food would be complete without discussing ale. Here's a lovely distillery found in Hidden Ember, along with other ale-related things.
Tumblr media
Here we have a very proud man and his distillery (He's the herbalist at Hidden Ember if you want to see him.), kegs that were lifted to the third floor via a crane or pulley system, and some nice tankards.
And that's the food of the West! I didn't go to every settlement, so I might have missed something, though I should have gotten the broad gist of things. Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed- wait, what's that? I forgot something? The- THE QUEN?!? Oh no, you're right.. well, I'll leave that for another time.

Tekotteh's crib
The Commander's seat, Tekotteh had claimed for himself many years before, now sat empty and void of a leader.
It was a most impressive space, Aloy thought; the chamber being located inside the highest peak of the Bulwark overlooking the alpine settlement regally, with a large firepit in the middle of the room. It was far grander, and more richly decorated, than those of the other Clan leaders at Thornmarsh and Scalding Spear.
Aloy scoffed and shook her head. She smiled at the memory of Kotallo and her ushering Tekotteh out. Good times.
She was glad the enormous room was now used as a true common area.

New York Times publishes op-ed claiming that Donald Trump's popularity is due to fact that he is a moderate.
What happened. On Monday, the NYTimes published a guest editorial by Matthew Schmitz entitled, “The Secret of Trump’s Appeal Isn’t Authoritarianism.” (The article is behind a paywall and I am not wasting one of my gift subscriptions to make it available.)
Mr. Schmitz's thesis is “Mr. Trump enjoys enduring support because he is perceived by many voters — often with good reason — as a pragmatic if unpredictable kind of moderate.”
Schmitz then attempts to normalize Trump's hate speech, racism, calls for violence, and erratic behavior as something we should expect from a lovable old uncle who doesn’t know when to stop saying stupid things.
Why it matters.  Democrats rightfully feel that the media is sleepwalking into a fascist regime by normalizing Trump with false equivalencies, reckless “both siderisms,” and inane “whataboutisms.” They do so in the pursuit of alleged “fairness” that obscures and denies the truth. While the media rises to the challenge on occasion, they relinquish any progress—and credibility—they achieve by pandering to the likes of Matthew Schmitz.
As I was preparing to explain why the NYTimes is acting recklessly by publishing Schmitz’s laundering of Trump's Nazi rhetoric, a reader sent me a piece by Jonathan V. Last in The Bulwark that does a better job than I ever could. See Jonathan V. Last, The Bulwark, The New York Times Is Part of the Effing Problem.
I urge you to read Last’s essay, start to finish. But if you don’t, the following gives the gist of his criticism of the Times:
The piece is filled with both euphemism and the passive voice, all in an attempt to obscure reality from readers and present a sympathetic case for Trump.
Look at this passage:
“To be sure, Mr. Trump’s wild rhetoric, indifference to protocol, and willingness to challenge expertise have been profoundly unsettling to people of both political parties. His term in office was frequently chaotic, and the chaos seemed to culminate in the Capitol riot of Jan. 6, 2021.”
This might be the most misleading passage ever published in the paper of record.
It was not Trump’s “indifference to protocol” which was “unsettling” to people. And the “chaos” of Trump’s term did not “seem” to culminate in a “riot” at the U.S. Capitol.
If you came down from Mars and simply read today’s NYT op-ed, you would have absolutely no idea that [January 6 was a violent insurrection]. Instead, you’d think that Trump was some kind of a ne’er-do-well or scamp. [¶]
But you gotta have both sides? I guess?
The Times does this a lot—running cover for authoritarians by publishing outrageously misleading “opinion” pieces in the name of airing “both sides” of the debate.
I won’t catalog the many ways that Schmitz attempts to excuse, minimize, and normalize Trump's hate speech—Jonathan Last does that ably in his article.
So, should you cancel your subscription to the NYTimes? As I suggested yesterday, the better strategy is to write to the Times to let the editors know what you think about their decision to normalize Trump immediately after he invoked Hitler’s “poisoning the blood of our nation” speech.
Many readers have asked how they can reach the journalists and editors at leading newspapers. Please see the helpful links posted in the Comment section by readers in response to yesterday’s newsletter: Comments - Help shape the narrative! - by Robert B. Hubbell (substack.com).
