(1/2) I love Jared, I'm his fan and I'm happy to see him on my TV and to have some photos or videos every now and then thanks to his wife Gen. 2023 is an anomalous year for him: the filming of season three of Walker ended in spring and the fourth probably won't start until early next year. The strike gave him almost an entire sabbatical in which he dedicated himself to his family, his children, vacations, to conventions outside the EC circuit and, perhaps, to some future projects. In photos and
Tumblr media
True, while Jared has been working nonstop since he was 17 years old for 23 years (18 of it as lead, which carries a lot of stress aka responsibilities without authority) and the strike enables him to have some much-needed break, in a 97% unemployment rate industry the best treatment for anxiety is having projects and more projects watings for you.
I've speculated here that Jared has been in talks for another project that won't interfere with his Walker commitment. With that said, projects from script to development to airing only have 6% survival rate. Think of how Supernatural was the only show out of 7 (X) from the pilot season to survive into syndication.

The beginner's guide to the Pretty Series
With the recent announcement of the new Pretty Series installment titled Himitsu no AiPri, it's about time the Pretty Series returned after over a year since the Waccha PriMagi! series finale. In celebration of the newest installment, let's take a quick history lesson about the Pretty series.
Tumblr media
The Pretty Rhythm Saga (2010-2014) - The Pretty Series saga began on July 15, 2010 with the arcade game titled Pretty Rhythm Mini Skirt. Made by Takara Tomy and developer SynSophia, this arcade game pits players in the role of Prism Stars, performing Prism Jumps, and collecting Prism Stones.
While the one that started it all made a slow start, the folks from Takara Tomy wanted to do more with the Pretty Rhythm saga, and with that, a TV anime titled Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream was made. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 9, 2011, for 51 episodes, this anime is the fruit of Japan-Korea collaboration thanks to Japan's Tatsunoko Production and South Korea's Dong Woo Animation. The TV anime is all about Aira, Rizumu, and Mion in their quest to take on the prestigious Prism Queen Cup.
As Aira Harune's journey to become Prism Queen is completed, Mia Ageha takes the baton as the star of the next Pretty Rhythm story; Dear My Future. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 7, 2012, for 51 episodes, Dear My Future centers on the rivalry between Prizmmy☆ and the K-Pop group PURETTY. Believe it or not, there are real-life versions of the groups as seen in the anime. There's even a live-action segment featuring Prizmmy☆ as well.
As Mia Ageha's road to Grateful Symphonia is well and truly over, Naru Ayase steps to the spotlight in the third and final chapter of the Pretty Rhythm saga, titled Rainbow Live. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 6, 2013, it features an original storyline unlike the previous two. It's about Naru, An, and Ito, who are working together at the Prism Stone Shop while trying to take good care of a mysterious girl named Rinne.
Although the Pretty Rhythm saga ended, the story continues with the KING OF PRISM spinoff films featuring male characters from the Pretty Rhythm saga. They even got a 2019 anime show as well showcasing the rise of the boys who would be Septentrion.
The PriPara saga (2014-2018, 2021~) After the end of the Pretty Rhythm saga,  the folks of Takara Tomy prepped up what it seems to be the second generation of the Pretty series. It's called PriPara and it aired on TV Tokyo in the Summer of 2014 and lasted for three seasons, four if you count Idol Time PriPara of course. This anime series centers on the life and times of Laala Manaka, a little girl who wants to be the best PriPara idol. Together with Mirei Minami and Sophy Hojo, they became SoLaMi Smile and they fought their way against the best idol teams of PriPara, especially Dressing Pafe consisting of Dorothy, Reona, and Sion, Tricolore, and Gaarmageddon, among many others. PriPara is a huge win for the people behind it and such success prompted the show to spawn four movies and outrageous merchandising rights.
In the spring of 2017, the next chapter of PriPara begins with three new main characters penning the final pages of this saga. Titled Idol Time PriPara, it's all about Yui Yumekawa, whose fateful encounter with Laala Manaka changed everything following an accident. With Nino Nijiiro and Michiru Kouda joining alongside, the MY☆DREAM trio made the best closure to this saga.
Although the PriPara TV series is finished, the story continues with Idol Land PriPara. First announced in December 2020, it was originally slated to be released in the spring of 2021 until it became subject to long gestation and delayed launch dates. It was released on August 17, 2023. It is the second official PriPara app game after the defunct PriPuz puzzle app game. This app game also features an original anime series set moments after the events of Idol Time PriPara. It introduces new characters such as Amari Katasumi, Mario, and Pololo, among others.
The Kiratto PriChan years (2018-2021) - Aired in TV Tokyo since April 2018 for three seasons, Kiratto PriChan is set in a world where fame comes from social media just like in the real world. It's about a group of girls who called themselves the Miracle☆Kiratts who are striving to become the best PriChan idols above the rest. For three seasons, we watched Miracle Kiratts taking on big challenges such as heated competition with rival teams such as Meltic StAr and Ring Marry, the jewel idol competition, saving the world, the road to the Queens Grand Prix, and saving the world...again, while they do what they do best; showcasing the world that they're the best PriChan sensations ever known.
PriMagi (2021-2022) - Waccha PriMagi! is the fourth installment of the Pretty Series that revolves around the lives of Primagistas striving to become the best of the best. The show is about Matsuri Hibino, a middle-schooler who dreams of being the best just like her idol, the legendary Jennifer Sumire Sol.
AiPri - After over a year of void, the Pretty Series has returned with the newest installment coming to TV Tokyo this April 2024. Titled Himitsu no AiPri, the new series stars Minori Fujidera as Himari Aozora and Sae Hiratsuka as Mitsuki Hoshikawa. For the first time in Pretty Series, the animation sequences were provided by OLM, the studio behind the Pokemon and Yo-Kai Watch anime series, while South Korea's Dongwoo A&E returned to cooperate for it.
Tumblr media
Welcome back, Pretty Series! The world can't wait for the franchise's comeback show this April.

REVENGE
Notes: This is NOT part one of chapter five. This is a teaser from chapter five.
If you're just stumbling across this, and haven't already done so, please stop and start by reading part one of chapter one.
This #Batwoman AU is based on the ABC tv series #Revenge. Ryan Wilder had just about everything taken from her when we met her, and she was doing her best to get it back. In this version of the story, that means taking some people down along the way. And, she's definitely no hero.
Let's just say chapter four was the mid-season finale and this is the spring hiatus trailer. And with that, I'll give you a game plan for this entire story.
We're going to finish this story by end of year.
In my story, season two of the tv series Batwoman parallels season one of the tv series Revenge, which will end with chapter 7.
I'm more or less skipping season two of Revenge, and will parallel season three for both shows.
I'll conclude with that season, too, ending on chapter 12. We're almost posting month for month with 2023, so that feels like a nice timeline.
Meet me here on Tumblr next Friday for part one of chapter five. Here's an out of sequence and context snippet from that part.
CHAPTER FIVE SNEAK PEEK
Tommy: “I knew you should have never trusted Robyn.”
Kate: “What are you talking about?”
Kate sips her drink, annoyed by the sudden accusation and shift in conversation. She wasn’t even aware that Tommy had an issue with Robyn.
Tommy: “Isn’t she supposed to be your friend, but she’s moving in on your girl?”
Kate sighs through her nose.
Kate: “Regardless to how I feel, Sophie isn’t mine. And neither is Robyn. We all met her at the same time. She doesn’t owe any allegiance to me.”
Tommy: “Right. What a coincidence. She just drops into all of your lives out of nowhere, and now she’s an integral part of it from every angle? You don’t find that odd?”
Kate: “Are you jealous of my relationship with Robyn? Because she’s been nothing but nice to you, so I don’t understand why you would randomly attack her, especially after you saw what just happened to her tonight.”
Tommy: “Seems pretty convenient to me.”
Kate: “What the hell is convenient about having your recorded therapy session shared with a bunch of strangers?”
Tommy: “Exactly! Strangers! What do you even know about this woman? Because what I see is that your ex seems to be coincidently falling for her, she’s become besties with both Catherine’s and your most trusted employees, and she’s been in Gotham for 5 minutes and is suddenly included in a video leak of Gotham elites.”
Kate: “She IS a Gotham elite, or whatever, if you insist on using those terms. She’s the CEO at Jetirian. Of course she’d use the top recommended therapist. You know what, Tommy? I was just trying to confide in you about Sophie, and this insane rabbit hole you’re digging feels like you’re questioning my judgment in friends. And maybe you’re right about that, because I thought you, my friend, were supposed to be helping me figure out how to get out of this merry go round of feelings about a woman I still love who can barely tolerate me. But maybe you’ve had so much to drink that you’re becoming delusional.”
Tommy, relatively sober, because he’s been more focused on feeding drinks to Kate than consuming them himself, fights back the urge to follow up on the mysterious selection of Robyn as CEO of Jetirian, because he can tell she’s not going to listen to reason tonight. Tommy doesn’t know exactly what’s going on, but as someone who’s pulled a scam or two of his own, he knows one when he sees one. He throws an arm over Kate’s shoulder, bringing her in for a side hug.
Tommy: “Truce bestie! Maybe you’re right. I’ve missed you, and she gets to do all the fun stuff we used to do together. I’m sure you’re right, and I just need to get to know her as well as you do. So, let’s talk about how we get your girl back.”
~~~~~
See you next week!
All #Batwoman things I do now are in the name of #SaveBatwoman. The month of May has so many fun activities planned for the campaign, including some committee members posting live updates from the #Starfury #Ultimates-Apokolips convention. “Faced with their first decision on ordering more of the CW’s existing scripted series, the network’s new Nexstar owners opted against it. I hear there will be no back orders for the CW’s new fall series Walker: Independence, from CBS Studios, and The Winchesters, from Warner Bros. Television, whose freshman seasons will remain at the original 13 episodes.”
Hello! Just read this from a Deadline article published 3 hours ago.
Is it,,,, bad? Or is this expected?
Already answered it over here (x)
in short, expected. Nexstar collapsed all summer shows into fall, and is power-rounding through properties to see what works. Existing shows are being given a full season to either prove themselves or wrap it up. New shows (this will apply to GK too) are only getting short orders to view their viability. There's only so much TV real estate. Summer's gonna basically become a pool of unscripted whatever for cheap, so it's fall/spring or bust.
Windy is dead. It's not gonna get a new order.
If GK's marketing numbers match as well as Winchesters and Windy's did theirs, odds are Gotham will be ordered for a full season 2 for next fall, as will Winchesters. Windy is gonna get punted, Stargirl, Nancy Drew are gone. Walker's gonna be wrapping or at BEST get renanceled but I doubt it at this point, looking at it being the worst performing 8PM show by a mile and knowing Jared got called in to talk to Miller, which isn't good right now. Kung Fu is more likely to get moved into an 8P slot to replace it, then they'll order a few new pilots.
Nexstar is going to aggressively rotate properties to resist industry decline. So while it's surrounding rival networks descend, they're trying to keep their numbers as close to 0.1 as possible right now, because that will actually put them into almost-playing-ball range by 2023, and by 2024 almost look like a respectable network, that's why they're saying profitable by 2025.
Nexstar is gauging decisions on 18-49. Mostly L+SD, but also +3. Lastly +7, but +3 is worth a lot more. The top shows in demo are AA, AAH, The Winchesters. These are the three that are safe, period. Almost everything else is being genocided right now, short for ones they see potential in moving to a better slot (like moving KF from 9 to 8, the same way they moved Stargirl from summer to fall and it went up, but not enough.)
The only acceptable below-1s seem to be either shit they license cheap from overseas for pennies on the dollar and unscripted shows like P&T. P&T still runs 0.06 on FRIDAY which is kinda shameful for walker to be so close. They could replace every 0.05 show with P&T RN and do better. Why give Jared 3-4M for an episode when they can do about the same with 6 digits?
I'm still not 100% Kung Fu is safe either but if anything in the bubble is, it is, because of its timeslot consideration.
Otherwise the only 3 properties remaining will be the WB-CBS coproductions, and that's WHY they started doing that shit. They've BEEN ready to ditch Walker.
Now that the work stoppages are over, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for business to bounce back. Since this means that a lot of new seasons of best tv shows are coming by the spring and summer so check your calendars
considering his history of violence against others for no reason whatsoever and his treatment of Megan despite her kind enough to not have him arrested for shooting at her the same night of the incident which was not different from those who are considered sociopathic and sadistic, no wonder why people who express their outrage against him think that ten years isn’t enough and wished he was executed. But considering that all the violence and pride came back to bite him in the rear end, those who believed in karma will look at this and think “see I told you that karma existed “
Oscar Cram Session - Watching the 2023 Academy Awards Best Picture Nominees
I don’t remember the situation in years past, but this year feels like a unique opportunity.
Weeks ago when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their nominees for the Oscars, I was surprised at how many I’ve actually heard of this year.  And so out of curiosity, I looked up how many were available on streaming.  To my surprise, a large number were available on some sort of streaming service.  The Academy Awards just happened to land on the opening weekend of my kids’ Spring Break where we didn’t have any planned activities.
So I hopped on the TV and started watching.  I had already seen Top Gun: Maverick and Everything Everywhere All at Once, so I watched the six remaining that were nominated and streaming.
Here are the Best Picture nominees for this year’s Academy Awards along with where they are showing:
All Quiet on the Western Front (Netflix) Avatar: The Way of Water (In Theaters Only) The Banshees of Inisherin (HBOMax) Elvis (HBOMax) Everything Everywhere All at Once (Showtime) The Fabelmans (In Theaters/VOD) Tar (Peacock) Top Gun: Maverick (Paramount+) Triangle of Sadness (Hulu) Women Talking (Amazon Prime Video)
Here’s what I think will win and my reviews as well.
Tumblr media
The Frontrunner:
Everything Everywhere All at Once the Meat Life Rating - 8.5/10
This film will likely win. The title is pretty emblematic of what the movie is.  A comedy, an action movie, a family drama, an immigrant story, a multiversal sci-fi epic.  Indie darling production company A24 lands another award winning release that is very much a product of the social media meme culture and the TikTok clip era.  Heavy genre influence as well.  But at the heart of it is the struggle between a 1st gen immigrant mother and her 2nd gen American daughter.  Star studded performances from film legends Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress Nominee), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress Nominee), and James Hong, a breakthrough performance from Stephanie Hsu (Best Supporting Actress Nominee), and a wonderful comeback for Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor Nominee).
Tumblr media
The Nostalgia Picks:
Top Gun: Maverick the Meat Life Rating - 9/10
What can I say?  This is my favorite but I know it won’t win.  My parents told me that Top Gun was my first movie theater movie when I was 3 but that I cried the whole time because it was loud.  But 5 years later me and my brother would play the movie on VHS basically on a loop for years.  This Maverick release was an even better end product in every way compared to the original but the soundtrack.  The story is enough of a standalone that it holds up well if you didn’t see the original, but it is so much richer if you have seen the original.  Tom Cruise is in his bag.  Miles Teller really does look like Goose’s son.  Great to see Val Kilmer.  And the real aerial footage is a spectacular sight.  All in all a theater experience worth the contemporary price of admission.
Tumblr media
Elvis the Meat Life Rating - 7/10
I’m not emotionally attached to Elvis or his music.  I knew of him and heard a bunch of his hits but I wouldn’t consider myself super versed in Elvis Presley’s life or catalog.  From an outsider’s standpoint, Austin Butler totally immersed himself into the Elvis persona in portraying the title character.  Tom Hanks’ accent choice was odd.  I don’t think this was at all historically accurate, but this era of biopics don’t focus on accuracies but rather capturing the vibe.  And if you’ve seen a Baz Luhrmann movie, it’s all about the vibes.  Sidenote on Luhrmann, he’s kind of a one trick pony.  Super stylized is his thing, and all of his films kind of have the same look and feel.  In any event, the movie was entertaining for sure.
Tumblr media
Tremendously Acted:
The Banshees of Inisheran the Meat Life Rating - 7.5/10
There is a reason that both leads are up for acting awards.  Colin Farrell, up for Best Actor, and Brendan Gleeson, up for Best Supporting Actor, play two gentlemen that were close friends until Gleeson’s character pulls away.  Kerry Condon was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress.  Other details would spoil the film.  Banshees is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking.  And the landscape of the Irish shoreline of Inisheran as the backdrop are tremendously shot.
Tumblr media
Tar the Meat Life Rating - 7/10
Cate Blanchett acts her ass off as Lydia Tar, a major conductor at the peak of her powers in the male-dominated industry before her world starts falling apart.  Tar is a commentary on power and the corrosive effects of such power.  Blanchett is a tour de force.  The entire film is shot following Blanchett, so there aren’t any scenes without her, and for good reason.  And the character’s Porsche Taycan is awesome.
Tumblr media
The Uncomfortable Watches (In A Good Way):
All Quiet on the Western Front the Meat Life Rating - 8/10
A unique look at the Great War.  We have had a bunch of World War I based films, but rarely a look from the German side.  This film is a touching story of a young man Paul Baumer played by Felix Kammerer and his journey through the stalemated trench war with his comrades in arms.  There are moments of laughter and bonding that make the tough war moments much more heartbreaking.
Tumblr media
Triangle of Sadness the Meat Life Rating - 7/10
I don’t know if satire quite describes this cringe comedy.  There are several layers of story here to analyze whether it is the haves vs have nots social commentary, or the gross out puke and poop humor toward the end of the boat scenes.  Even the opening date scene with the restaurant check scene is very cringe-inducing.  Loads of uncomfortable laughter here.
Tumblr media
Women Talking the Meat Life Rating - 7/10
I don’t understand the Mennonite community fully.  But I do know that in these separate religious communities are a tough for women, especially when it comes with handling sexual assault.  Women Talking is a moving film about a group of Mennonite women discussing whether or not to leave their community and the heartbreak that either staying or leaving would lead to.
I know eventually I will see both Avatar: The Way of Water and The Fabelmans eventually.  I’ll give my opinion on those as well.  Enjoy the Oscars and the movies nominated as well!
TV Shows I Watched in 2022
1. The Sandman (Season 1)
Tumblr media
An absolutely fabulous and remarkable adaptation that literally lifts the comic book pages to the screen. All of the people who worked on this must be so proud because its so good and all the cast is perfect! But also Tom Sturridge truly embodies Dream so well that every time he’s on screen, even non speaking or very stoic, he has such a presence that really shines. I’m so glad this got picked up for more episodes and I can’t wait to read more of the comic to see where its going next.
2. His Dark Materials (Season 3)
Tumblr media
I already gushed about how much I love this book adaptation but man, this third season has been just as good if not better than the first two. Daphne Keen has matured and grown in ways that really highlights the character growth Lyra has gone through and Amir Wilson is really the perfect Will and is the perfect balance to Lyra. Seeing the images of the Mulefa and the Land of the Dead come life has also been a treat. But now I’m so sad its over, though I knew it had too. But truly this was one of the best adaptations I have seen and highly recommend it.
3. Heartstopper (Season 1)
Tumblr media
And yet, another great adaptation of comics that just leaves you feeling so good and so happy. I binged this, like I did Alice Oseman’s comic in just a couple days and felt so overcome with happiness of good queer representation for younger audiences to enjoy. I think Kit Connor and Joe Lock play such a perfect representation of Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring that seeing their chemistry made it feel like reading the comic. I also fell in love with the soundtrack of this series as well as the cute doodle images that accompanied the live action and can’t wait to see where it goes in season 2. Especially with Alice’s huge Asexual plans!
4. Gotham (Seasons 1-5)
Tumblr media
This was on my TV list for years and although it was long over by the time I got to it, I really enjoyed the entire show. Sure the storyline of Jim Gordon got a little tiring after a while, but the backstories of Bruce, Penguin, and the Riddler, more than make up for it. And really when a show can make you root for a villain like Penguin, that’s well done. Part of me wishes we could see more of Batman, but this was a night treat to see how Batman came to be and colorful Gotham was before he had to take up the suit.
5. Doctor Who (2023 Specials)
Tumblr media
I’m so sad that another era of Doctor Who has come to an end, especially because I hit my sad Doctor feeling with Jodie after the first special of Eve of the Daleks because she is just so good. While some stories can be argued hit or miss, I truly thought that as the first woman doctor, Jodie proved it could be done and has paved the way for the future. We also got to see more interesting places, aliens (both old and new), and I do appreciate that all her companions survived compared to the rest of the modern series. The Power of the Doctor was also a giddy treat to see so many older companions and doctors and was a perfect send off (minus the last minute). I hope we see her come back and reprise the role, but I truly just want to say thanks.
6. Call the Midwife (Seasons 5-11)
Tumblr media
This show has become my feel good show. I can always count on it to make me cry and make me feel so deeply and for that I’m appreciative. I also love the way the show blends current topics into historical context while still be true to the era. It makes me feel like we really have been in some of these fights for a while but that some of the things we still are fighting for were still just as true then as they are now. But also, this shows needs to stop killing off characters lol. Mainly because this isn’t a show where death is taken lightly. Just let people leave in peace!
7. Miraculous Ladybug (Seasons 2-3)
Tumblr media
I really did not expect to get as hooked to this show as I did, but behind its silliness and general setup, the more we learn about the Miraculous and the history of Ladybug the more interested I get. Plus the more we scale up the threat of Hawkmoth the more intense to clashes are and I appreciate it. My only problem was I can’t watch more seasons right now since Netflix only has these first 3. And since I boycott Disney+ I’m not sure how I’ll catch up especially since I like watching these in French with english dub.
8. Supergirl (Season 5)
Tumblr media
I wasn’t expecting to be sad when this show ended, but I got very emotional when it did. Sure not every story was great and not every season was prefect but what I really enjoyed about Supergirl was that she really fought for the ideals she stood for and told good stories about why that was important for her. I like Kara and I like many of her friends and will be sad to see them go even if I’m partially glad that there is one less DC show to follow now.
9. Old Enough
Tumblr media
This is the cutest show! I’ve always loved how much Japan actually raises its kids to be productive members from such an early age, but watching 2-5 year olds travel the streets and run errands from their parents made me root for them so far. Sure some had a hard time, but most persevered and that was so admirable. If you ever need a pick me up watch an episode or two because they are only 10-20 minutes long and its so cute.
10. The Final Table
Tumblr media
Okay, I know this is weird, but I discovered this show accidentally on Netflix when I turned it on at my new dentist. Don’t ask me why a food show was fun to watch while getting my teeth cleaned, but it was. And part of it might be how they structured this show to travel to different countries to see the best of the best square off. I would eat so much of all the food and it was fun to see what could be created. Too bad there aren’t any more seasons though, but for a quick splurge in reality TV this was one of my favorites.
Other Shows I watched:
10. Stargirl (Season 2)
11. The Flash (Season 7)
TV Shows I Rewatched in 2022:
Doctor Who (Seasons 5-18)
20 Penguins Thoughts: Teammates' concern for Patric Hornqvist is real
January 15, 2019 8:17 AMBy Jason Mackey / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
SAN JOSE, Calif. — It’s a text message that Kris Letang doesn’t want to send.
Not because he doesn’t care — he does.
More how he knows it’ll be received.
But like many Penguins who’ve experienced multiple concussions, Letang knows exactly what Patric Hornqvist, who’s had five of them since December 2014, is going through. And Letang, while he cares an awful lot, doesn’t want to be burdensome.
“I’ve been through that,” Letang said. “The last thing I wanted was everybody texting me. That’s why I try to leave him alone. If you’re too [in his face], he might feel like he has to come back quicker. He might not make a good decision.”
Injuries in contact sports are inevitable. Even ones to your brain.
“It’s part of our sport,” Letang said. “We know what we signed up for.”
But with yet another one happening to Hornqvist, something has become clear when discussing the situation with his teammates: This isn’t the same as someone recovering from a knee injury or even his first or second concussion; Penguins players are genuinely concerned about Hornqvist’s head.
“When it’s a good friend and someone we all love and is important to us, you worry about it,” Matt Cullen said. “The positive is we have some pretty good people in place as far as taking your time off and allowing things to heal up and doing the best you can to control those things. Aside from that, we all just hope he’s alright.”
2. Hornqvist, who was concussed last Tuesday against the Panthers, has been skating on his own back in Pittsburgh, which is obviously a good sign.
While the Penguins look forward to getting Hornqvist back, they also don’t want him to rush anything, for fear that he comes back too soon and jeopardizes his long-term health.
“You have to be careful,” Sidney Crosby said. “He has to make sure he’s ready when he comes back.
“He’s been smart about it, though. Especially the way he plays and how tough he plays, he has to make sure he’s feeling good.”
There’s a pretty good reason Hornqvist should take this slow, too.
Actually a couple of them.
“He’s got a family and kids (daughters Isabella and Vendela),” Cullen said. “That’s the first thing that you worry about for him. … Our thoughts are all with him, that’s for sure.”
Mostly, the Penguins just want Hornqvist to be able to be himself again.
“He’s a heart-and-soul guy,” Cullen said. “He’s one of the most important guys in this room as far as keeping the team on the right track. He just brings so much life and energy to our group. He’s one of those guys that makes it really fun for all of us. It’s a lot different when he’s not here.”
3. The other thing area of concern — and this is probably more outside of the Penguins dressing room than inside of it — is Hornqvist’s style of play.
The same rough-and-tumble style that has made Hornqvist so good at what he does — enough for 20 or more goals in every full season he’s played and a $5.3-million-a-year contract through 2023 — is the same one that doesn’t age well.
When Hornqvist does come back, it’s easy to say that he should change. For his own health and career, sure, but also for his family. But can he? Crosby thinks that will be tough.
“You can’t adjust to a puck in the face,” Crosby said, referencing what caused Hornqvist’s latest concussion. “What are you going to do? He had one off his head in warmup. They’re fluke things.”
Which, again, is why Crosby doesn’t think Hornqvist can or will change his game whenever he does get back.
“He only knows one way to play,” Crosby said. “That’s the way he plays the game. Sometimes those things can happen. The way he competes and the way he plays, I don’t see him changing that.
4. Hornqvist has said repeatedly that he’s not going to change his game, often reasoning that he can’t or he’ll be out of the league.
It sounds harsh, but Letang understands where Hornqvist is coming from.
The Penguins asked Letang to change his game last season — OK, tweak — to take fewer dangerous hits, but it wound up being one of the things that contributed to an off-year for him in 2017-18.
“You can’t really change your game, honestly,” Letang said. “Certain players have played their whole life like that. That’s why they have those contracts and why they’ve had so much success. If you change that, you might become ineffective.”
5. I hope Hornqvist can do something. For his health and for his family.
Staying objective as a reporter is one thing, but you root for everybody — player or not — to avoid serious brain injuries.
As Cullen said on concussions, “There’s still so much we don’t know.” He’s right. But we do know this: They’re scary. Especially when they occur with the frequency that they have with Hornqvist.
“I feel for him,” Matt Murray said. “It’s a tough situation. It’s not an injury that’s fun to deal with, obviously. I can’t speak to how he’s feeling or anything like that. I just wish him all the best, like the rest of us here. Personally, not anything to do with hockey, you wish that he’s feeling good.”
6. The NHL and NHLPA met recently to discuss the current CBA, which runs through 2022, although the league and players have the option to terminate it this September (to be made effective Sept. 15, 2020).
From the league’s perspective, commissioner Gary Bettman would seemingly like to hold another World Cup of Hockey in 2020, and that could play a part in whether or not there’s labor peace through 2020 and beyond.
While Crosby said he didn’t want to comment specifically on negotiations “because it can change so many times,” he said he would be in favor of another World Cup. Crosby also would love to play in the 2022 Beijing Games.
“I’m good with both,” Crosby said. “I’ve had good experiences in both. I don’t know about the timing of it and how it fits in with everything. They did a great job in Toronto [in 2016]. Definitely the two Olympics I’ve been involved with, I thought they were awesome. We’ll see what happens.”
7. Crosby said much must still be determined with how the event would be structured — he brought up the possibility of another Team Europe and the under-23 squad as variables — in addition to the length of time it would require out of players.
But Crosby did really enjoy the last World Cup, held in Toronto in 2016, and would be all for doing it again. Maybe both, if the NHL and NHLPA could swing it.
“I think it was a big thing,” Crosby said. “We’ll have to see how it works out. I don’t know if it’s going to be the same format or how that’s going to shake out. The length of time, too, and when they do it. It’s something they have to figure out. I think they’re both [meaning the Olympics, too] are pretty good events.”
8. My two cents: I think the NHL is more in favor of the World Cup, while the players would probably rather go to the Olympics. They see the latter as a bigger stage, and they’re probably right.
Bettman has said before he worries about the disruption to the NHL season, but with the 2022 Games being in Beijing, that’s a major business opportunity for the league.
Would it be the worst thing if they did both? As long as the players would be on board, I don’t see an issue. I think it could be a lot of fun.
9. With Washington’s Alex Ovechkin set to pass Sergei Fedorov in career points by a Russian-born player — he’s six away after Monday’s game — I thought it would be a good time to ask Malkin about hockey in his home country and sort of the state of the Russian player.
Malkin said he’s “proud” of what some of his countrymen have been able to do, name-checking Ovechkin (on pace for an eighth season of 50 or more goals) and Tampa Bay forward Nikita Kucherov (NHL-best 75 points in 46 games).
There’s also other highly skilled players in Artemi Panarin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Vladimir Tarasenko, plus some solid defensemen (Ivan Provorov and Dmitry Orlov spring to mind) and a pair of Vezina Trophy winners/finalists in Sergei Bobrovsky and Andrei Vasilevskiy.
“Russia loves hockey, first of all,” Malkin said. “When the national team plays, everyone watches on TV. Russia has always had so many good players — Fedorov, [Igor] Larionov. Lots of huge names.”
10. Malkin also lobbied for Russian players to come to the NHL and stay, believing it’s the best league in the world.
“If you have a chance, you need to come to NHL and try,” Malkin said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re 20 years old or 25. Just try. It’s No. 1, for sure. Every best player plays here, for sure.
“If you [want] to be better and you want a challenge against the best players, you be here. Be better every day, play against good teams. Of course I’m proud of Ovechkin and Kucherov are doing right now.”
11. I dug into some recent numbers of current Russian NHL players, and it’s roughly the same this season as it has been for the past couple years. Maybe a tad better.
Thirty-eight Russian-born players have played at least one game in the NHL this season. That number was 39 in 2017-18 and 42 and 41 in the two years before that.
Last year actually saw Russian players produce more offense than they have in quite some time, with those 39 players combining to score 428 goals and register 1,048 points.
This season, Russian-born skaters should meet or exceed those numbers. Russian players currently have 204 goals and 586 points a handful of games past the halfway point of the NHL season.
12. In talking to Malkin, I realized that I had ever asked him who he idolized while growing up in Magnitogorsk.
He cited watching Detroit and the Russian Five in the late 1990s — Fedorov, Larionov, Slava Fetisov, Vyacheslav Kozlov and Vladimir Konstantinov.
“I don’t know. It’s a hard question,” Malkin said with a smile. “I watched Detroit, Russian Five. You always hear, ‘Russian Five, Russian Five.’
“My style is more [like] Fedorov. Best player so far. He plays center. He plays wing. He can do everything. He’s a really, really smart guy and a smart player.”
13. Ever wonder why they call Marcus Pettersson “Dragon?”
Yes, seriously, that’s his nickname dating back to his time in Anaheim.
On Friday, before Pettersson played his first game at Honda Center since being traded to Pittsburgh, I asked him where the nickname came from.
Turns out it originated in Sweden. Pettersson had a high school basketball coach that called him and another kid “Dragons.” For no apparent reason, either.
Then one day in Anaheim, and perhaps because he’s tall and lanky, someone asked Pettersson if he ever played hoops.
Pettersson has always been kind of so-so on the sport but relayed the story from his home country.
“I just told the story as a joke, and they thought it was hilarious,” Pettersson said.
14. Turns out Derek Grant, a teammate of Pettersson’s in Anaheim who was there for the original story, retold it in Pittsburgh, and the nickname has remerged.
“I didn’t think it would stick,” Pettersson said. “Somehow it did.”
15. I talked to goaltending coach Mike Buckley about a few things in Anaheim, most notably what has helped Matt Murray get right again after returning from injury.
He brought up the team’s overall play and the emergence of Casey DeSmith as reasons why — the latter because he’s been able to shoulder some of the load and also the competitive environment it has helped create with Murray.
One of the things that outsiders have brought up relative to Murray is how he’s been taller in his net. Buckley said no tactical adjustment has been made, though he does think it may be at least a little bit true.
“He’s more confident,” Buckley said, smiling and standing up straight.
16. Another thing Buckley should get credit for this season is the emergence of DeSmith.
Both are New Hampshire guys and, like Murray, have a pretty good history together.
The biggest thing that has led to DeSmith’s breakout year, Buckley said, is how much better he’s been able to read the game. It’s similar to what has made Murray so successful.
“That’s where he’s made the biggest jump,” Buckley said. “He’s always been a pretty good play-reader and has anticipated well. But to catch up with how quickly it happens at this level, that was a big jump for him. I think he’s really adapted well with that.”
17. I also asked Buckley how the Penguins plan to manage the dynamic of Murray and DeSmith and what that might mean for each guy if both are playing as well as they have recently.
“I think it’s one game at a time,” Buckley said. “I think that healthy competition … keep that going right up until playoffs.”
If DeSmith can get this out of Murray simply by playing well, I think it makes his new extension — worth $1.25 million per season — even more of a bargain.
18. I don’t think it will take until Feb. 10 for Justin Schultz to come back.
That would be his original target date given the four-month timeline we were originally given, but the fact that he skated in full equipment for the first time last Friday likely bodes well for him joining the team soon.
The only complicating factor here is that, after this road trip, the Penguins have another week off because of their bye week and the All-Star Game.
Hard to imagine Schultz not being back with the team out of the break, if not before.
19. What will Jim Rutherford do at the trade deadline? Let’s use some deductive reasoning.
I have a tough time seeing Rutherford letting this deadline pass and not combining a good young goalie (Tristan Jarry) and a defenseman (they have nine) and doing something to help the NHL club. Rutherford is in win-now mode. He has a terrific opportunity to improve his team.
What needs to be better? Easy: third-line center. Their wings are fine. Defense has been good, too, and it’s about to get much better. They’re set at goalie, and they have three fourth-line centers.
It’s literally the only piece of this team that’s incomplete. I just don’t see how Rutherford can look at Tampa, Toronto and Washington and think the Penguins are getting enough from that position.
20. San Jose is my absolutely favorite road city. We get asked this question a lot — where do you like to go on the road? Well, here. And north of here.
Heaven for me came Wednesday. As soon as I landed in San Jose, I hopped onto a train bound for San Francisco and eventually wound up at Haight-Ashbury, the Grateful Dead/hippie Mecca.
Spent the afternoon and evening walking around and listening to music, doing some shopping and had dinner at Magnolia Brewery … just an amazing time.
If you’re a fan of the Dead’s music, or just a different-looking scene, I can’t recommend the Haight enough. And San Francisco, in general. What an awesome place.
