Funny how I keep missing a weekly mark with Pretty Cure specifically, huh?
I swear it's not intentional, but perhaps I oughta shift it to be (officially) biweekly. Y'know, get it all in shape for myself. Idk, I'll figure it out.
Anywho, Pretty Cure~! With Sora-chan and Mashiro-chan~! Maybe expand it to Ageha-san and Wing-kun sooner or later~! Who knows~!
Spoilers, I guess...
-Oh shit, brass.
-Man, that reminds me of when I'd watch Batman: Brave and the Bold when I was a kid.
-Made a bestie~!
-Off to school with ye
-"Whoa! School?"
-What, you think they don't have school up there? I'll have you know that Sora-chan was a graduate of the Skyloft Knights Acade- oh wait, wrong series.
-That borb is so shaped.
-Besties~!
-"Oh come on, back in the old country, everybody's got a free pass to education!"
-Damn, confession in episode 3? Hot damn.
-Sorashido Academy!
-...Cleaning time~!
-Never have you seen a house so clean.
-Not even lunch time.
-"...if Sora-chan were a bird... would she be a skylark?"
-Speaking of birds...
-No offense Yoyo-san, you're a proper GILF.
-Went like one and a half feet into the air.
-Homegirl wants compulsory education.
-Off she goes~!
-Awwwww
-...I have to wonder how like
-Legally this all works.
-I didn't bring this up at all during Delicious Party, since all the Cures were humans and attending the same school from the get go, but it's so strange to me that off-worlders like Hikari, Akagi, and Ellen can just enroll into a school without much issue. Setsuna was officially adopted by Love's parents, so I didn't think too much of her situation but like
-This is consistent across seasons too, which follow the Kamen Rider/Super Sentai logic of "different continuities unless they're not". Is this just like... a universal constant?
-Pafume~!
-Mashiro-less Behavior.
-AGEHA JUMPSCARE
-Hey homegirl, whaddup?
-Parufeito~!
-Hot damn girl.
-"You gay."
-"I AM MASHIROLESS, I AM THE MOST DOWN BAD GIRL IN THE UNIVERSE!"
-Jesus Christ, I was being facetious, what the heck
-You need more friends, girl.
-Make up~!
-Brought to you by Pretty Holic, available from Premium Bandai for one of your kidneys and a couple of teeth.
-Sparkling~!
-"Ah youth..."
-Whoa, grayscale.
-She flee!
-Oh shit, gangster battle.
-Skyland... Divine Fist!
-Disregard safety, acquire Mashiron.
-That thing is "I am down horrendous for you, Mashiro."
-"Oh hey, it's you Kabaton."
-Hot damn, Sora's taken that fourth wall very seriously.
-Desoit!
-I'm assuming Bebop-on's Lanborg summoning works solely through calorie burning at this point.
-Certainly makes wanton destruction efficient.
-He's like a big Metall!
-From the Mega Mans!
-Going up~!
-Kabatonight you're gone.
-Theeeeere ya go! That wasn't so hard, was it?
-Bless you, Ageha-san~!
-...on second thought, no, I fucking hate that Hummer you're driving.
-This car kicks ass, and you can watch Madagascar while you're driving~!
-And then Gloria does the Go Animate dance, smth smth Those Animals Are So Fucking Funny Merge Without Looking Kaboom
-Holy shit, you just
-Guessed that off the cuff, huh
-Sora-chan, ordinary middle school student~!
-Ah, speaking of which
-Wow, can't wait for Episode Seven~!
-Episode Seven~!
-Very cute.
-...that ribbon seems very small.
-There he is. The borb.
-"Thank you, Granny Goodness."
-Watch, she's gonna actually gonna be like the real thing and be an agent of the Underg.
-I'm kidding, obviously, but that'd be one hell of a thing to put into your show for young children.
-"Please don't eat Sora-chan alive, she's very sensitive."
-Skyland~! Y'know, it's just a few warps away from Gran Ocean. Just swing a left from Hope Kingdom, then just a slip south of Labyrinth.
-Mashiron~!
-Skalandinavia~!
-"Wow, your denial is so obvious, you must be from Copenhagen!"
-They're bullying this nerd so hard.
-"I'm the shyest bitch in the fuckin' universe, yo!"
-So... Sensei... are you single?
-Cannot tell a lie. Momoi Tarou would be proud.
-Aphorisms~!
-Her base instincts take over~!
-"Damn, this girl's quick!"
-...I have to ask, how does Sora's Skyland body work? Specifically, the bones.
-The people believe~!
-Into fucking ORBIT
-Meteorite Strike!
-Awwwwww
-Everybody loves Sora-chan, the shyest fucking supersonic athlete in town~!
-I'm assuming Mashiro's a second year at this school if she already has a favorite spot on the roof and deep lore on the school's founding.
-Be yourself, sky cadet!
-"I lied! I'm not shy at all! I've been keeping it all a secret! I am a goddamn superhero!"
-Hero Gal~!
-Oh my God
-Kabaton's the boss.
-Melonless bread.
-Like Seedless Melon.
-Fucker took the tree!
-Ready Go!
-Right, what do you do?
-Petal Blizzard!
-Gotta say, I really missed having dynamic battlefields, the Delicious Field got really boring after a while.
-...wonder if this is where all the setting designers went?
-Go big or go home, I guess!
-Timbeeeeer!
-All fixed up~!
-...guess nobody's really too traumatized by what happen. That's a good thing though.
-Hero Garu~!
-Hooray~! Friendship~!
-Good work today, Mashiron!
-She grows up so fast.
-OH THE LAD
-Cure Wing, here he comes~!
-I'm half picturing Murase-san waiting in the corner of the recording studio, just bobbing in place for the chance to say his transformation phrase.
-I don't think I'll miss Saturday this time.

Messy (DonBrothers)
“Anyone know when this will end?” Haruka grunted as she clubbed several jelly shaped humanoids that splattered into gooey, gross jelly over them when hit only to reform a few seconds later. Around her, the others were struggling as well. Even the Noto’s weapons and Murasame were ineffective against the jelly people.
“No idea!” Kijino screeched as he swooped down to kick away the jelly people sneaking up on Sonoza.
Sonoi grunted as his sword ran through a slightly larger jelly humanoid but it did nothing to stop it from reforming. He looked around and frowned. “Speaking of which, where is Tarou?”
“Who knows?” Tsubasa said disgruntledly as he swung the now exhausted turned dormant Murasame. He thought he could be free from this madness when he saved Natsumi. But noooo, he still got dragged into battle after battle whether he liked it or not.
“Tsubasa-kun, look out!” Sononi tackled him away just in the nick of time as an ax came down on the spot he was standing at. The InuBrother growled but reluctantly accepted her assistance. He was still mad at her for deceiving him. But she was persistent in continuing to seek him out and earn his forgiveness.
Saruharu shook his head at them. A haiku was forming in his mind over them. ‘The lone wolf and the Ice Queen, frigidity and grudges bereft them.’
Seconds after coming up with the haiku, he was distracted by the music and scattered petals accompanied by boisterous laughter.
“Wahahaha! It’s a festival, people! Laugh, cheer and shout as we make new connections!”
 “You’re late, Tarou-san!” Jirou complained.
“The palanquin got stuck in traffic.” The leader of the DonBorthers simply said. He transformed into Goldon Momotaro with the Palanquin Phoenix and unleashed a blast of light that melted the small fry jelly people, blinding his friends in the process.
“Give us a warning when you do that!” Sonoza brandished his spear at him.
“I offer no apologies.” Tarou said unapologetically. With a laugh, he leapt off the palanquin to shoot down the remaining jelly people.
 “Show off.”
Tarou merely smirked at Sonoi’s jab when they went to the oden cart for a celebratory meal after all the jelly people were destroyed. “It can’t be helped that I’m the best.”

stupidly fluffy facts abt my ocs
Hajime doesn't like to wake up any time before noon when he doesn't have classes. unfortunately for him, Tarou is an early riser and likes to clean on his days off. depending on the season, they'll either go to the dagashi shop nearby or watch a movie in bed when he's done to make Haji a bit less grumpy
as of "season 2," Hanako and Leo have each other's fingerprints tattooed on themselves. they wanted to give each other stick-and-pokes one day, and they settled on fingerprints. Hana has Leo's fingerprints on his right collarbone, Leo has Hana's on the inside of his right forearm
Andy and Mila have been dating for 2 years already! they were high school sweethearts. their friends were a little surprised when they heard they were still together. they still get butterflies when they go on dates
Leo knows how to crochet and has made everyone something! Hana has a checkerboard pillow, Tarou has a frankly massive blanket, Haji has a jacket meant to mimic a letterman, Andy has a pair of those fingerless gloves that can turn into mittens, and Mila has a pair of earrings shaped like cat heads.
Hana is, funny enough, the only decent cook. he's memorized everyone's favorite dishes. Tarou has a fondness for scotch eggs, since they're the food they remember most from the few years they lived in England.
the big 4 all play TF2, and their mains are ironically two of the more major ships in the fanbase. (Haji and Tarou main Heavy and Medic, Hana and Leo main Scout and Sniper).

THE SAIMON FAMILY CASE recaps [12/13]
In which we confront Gensui, make even more puns, and learn the beautiful boy’s secret. [tw: ED mention]
--
On September 19th, the first anniversary of Tamako’s death, everyone mobilizes to make sure not a single person will die this time. The entire giant family gathers in the auditorium of the stage next to their house, where they will spend the entire day guarded by several of Nihon Tantei’s Club office workers and detectives, young members of Fujita-gumi providing additional security.
The only family members to stay behind in Sanasou are the two surviving Tamakos, old man Gensui, as well as Tousen Natsuko and Tsukumo Karan who will provide them care. In order to guard these five, Ajiro, Kirigirisu, a few of their detectives and Fujita-gumi members will stay in the house.
The stakes are even higher than usual; if they fail to prevent yet another murder, Ajiro will quit the Club. A few of the Club's detectives, like Arito Tarou, only agreed to come here and help so they can witness his failure in person.
Ajiro asked Soga Tensui to meet him and Kirigirisu by the aviary at noon “for the final discussion about the Case”, so both detectives head there early. Ajiro chose the time and place on purpose; he knows from the dove caretaker Ranma that the big box with Onikaru-sama opens every year on September 19th between noon and 1 PM—apparently there's something about it that Ajiro wants to see.
As they wait for noon watching the doves, Ajiro points out more interesting (and wacky) coincidences. Prince Shoutoku lived in the Asuka period, Asuka being spelled with kanji for “flying birds” (飛鳥). The temple Houryuu-ji is located in the town Ikaruga (斑鳩), the name of which includes the kanji for “dove” (鳩).
When noon arrives, the detectives hear a loud coo, coo seemingly coming from within the box, and its double door opens to reveal Onikaru-sama.
No matter how long Kirigirisu stares at the figure, it doesn’t look like a dove. It’s more similar to a gray sparrow, its spread wings and tail darker, its distinctive beak gold. It's perched on a triple-pillared torii… and actually, the bird itself also has three legs.
Ajiro explains that the bird is a Japanese grosbeak, known as Ikaru or Ikaruga—the same name as the town Ikaruga that has just been mentioned. It’s likely that instead of Onikaru-sama, the figure was once called "the honorable lord grosbeak", On-Ikaru-sama (on being a honorific).
The triple-pillared torii is reminiscent of the shrine Kaiko no Yashiro, which is located near Kouryuu-ji, a temple founded by Prince Shoutoku’s close ally Hata no Kawakatsu. A fringe theory claims that the Hata clan was Jewish believing in Nestorian Christianity, and that Kaiko no Yashiro viewed from above resembles the Star of David. Perhaps that’s one more “proof” strengthening Soga Tensui’s belief in the connection between Shoutoku and Jesus.
As the detectives are lost in conversation, suddenly they hear another loud coo coo, but not from the box—it comes from right behind them.
The master of vocal mimicry Soga Tensui is standing behind them, a smile on his face.
“Souji, Kirigirisu… it looks like you have finally discovered our secret.” The man is speaking to them out loud, so he must be Gensui.
“Gensui… are you Jesus?” Ajiro asks without beating around the bush.
Gensui spreads his arms wide, creating the shape of a cross with his body—
“YES, I AM!”
[And what a horrible pun it is, since イエス is both “yes” and “Jesus”. Jesus I Am.]
“So… so you really are convinced you’re Prince Shoutoku and Jesus?” Kirigirisu takes a step back. “I can’t believe it…”
Gensui’s expression turns stern for just a second before that calming smile returns to his face. Kirigirisu realizes where else he saw a smile of this kind. It’s the “archaic smile”, often seen on Buddha statues. No doubt this too is a part of the man's delusion...
“It's not that I’m convinced,” Gensui says. “I really am both Shoutoku Taishi and Jesus Christ.”
“But that’s… are you claiming that you’re immortal?”
“No. Unlike Hikami Sensai, I'm not immortal.”
Hikami Sensai—the Mountain God that Hyousen once mentioned.
“I can think of only one explanation that supports your claims,” Ajiro says. “Shoutoku Taishi and Jesus Christ are succession names.”
“Indeed. Just like with stage names of kabuki theater or rakugo, Shoutoku Taishi and Jesus are also heritage names. In the Asuka period the name Jesus was first introduced to Japan, and a version of it changed to Japanese became a succession name. Its official form is Umayato no Miko. If Shoutoku Taishi was the first person to have that name, I would be the ninety-eighth Umayato no Miko in turn. ...I know you would not believe us even if we had definitive proof. No matter. It is enough that I know who I really am. No one else has to believe it.”
Kirigirisu naturally thinks that the man is completely nuts, but Ajiro warns him not to get heated; they have to accept what Tensui says for now or the conversation will get nowhere. Tensui comments that other people often refuse to believe giant truths that would turn their entire understanding of history around.
“I don’t doubt what you claim,” Ajiro says carefully, “but could you tell me how the next Umayato no Miko is chosen? Can there exist two at once?”
“When an Umayato no Miko senses their death approaching, they appoint a successor who will inherit the name. Anyone at all can be appointed, even those not related by blood. In the short period between appointing the successor and the predecessor's death, there technically exist two Umayato no Miko at the same time.”
“You said earlier, I quote: you have finally discovered our secret. By our, you mean…?”
“Mine and my predecessor’s. I am the only Umayato no Miko right now.”
“Could your predecessor be… Saimon Tamako?”
Ajiro explains how he came to this outrageous conclusion. Even though Tamako was Korean, she spent a lot of time travelling through Japan, and the title could be passed to anyone no matter the blood connection.
The three rich men who married the three Tamakos—Saimon Taishin, Tsukumo Taigen, Tousen Taikun—all changed their names, so they had a shared kanji tai (太). Everyone assumed that this name change occured before the triple marriage, but what if the opposite was true? What if it was in fact Saimon Tamako who proposed that change? While we’re at it, maybe it was her who came up with names for her daughter Akiko and some other family members like Taishi and Tsushima?
Once Gensui confirms that’s the case, Ajiro explains his thoughts in details.
Let’s look at the names of Taishin (太臣) and Taikun (太君) and replace that first kanji with another similarly looking tai (大). Taishin’s name would now mean a minister (大臣), while Taikun’s name could be read as ookimi (大君), like the emperor’s title in the times of Prince Shoutoku. Quite the coincidences.
Saimon Taishi was named after Shoutoku Taishi, though spelled differently. Tsushima is an island near the Korean Peninsula. The name Akiko (明子) is somewhat similar to mentaiko (明太子), which happens to both be a popular culinary ingredient in Korea and also have Shoutoku’s name Taishi (太子) in it. Many other members of the family have the kanji for “horse” in their names, which again relates to Umayato no Miko, “the Stable Door Prince”.
The next mystery to solve hid in the words Tamako used to repeat. Kudaranai… ima wa kudaranai. What she was actually saying was Ima wa Kudara nai, “there is no Kudara now”. Kudara is the Japanese name for Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Ajiro thinks Tamako might have been born in the region formerly known as Baekje.
Gensui states that while he can’t know Tamako’s thoughts, the reasoning about her Kudara line seems legitimate.
Ajiro’s next rhetorical question touches on a more practical matter: aside from the name, what else does an Umayato no Miko inherit from their predecessor? The answer is easy to guess when you look at what Tamako and Gensui had in common: magic. What’s passed down is the art of illusion.
“The current public image of Shoutoku Taishi or Jesus Christ greatly differs from reality,” Gensui says. “Historical facts passed down through the ages turn into false nonsense. I don’t intend to deny what people believe about either of the two, but from my point of view, they were above all else splendid magicians. You're free to choose whether you believe it.”
Well, it’s true that Jesus made a lot of miracles happen, and the art of illusion as we know it was first introduced to Japan in Asuka period.
“Let's accept the premise of Jesus Christ and Shoutoku Taishi being magicians,” Ajiro says. “Maybe the problem lies not with them, but with those who came afterwards. Perhaps they weren’t just plain magicians, but—magicians of murder.”
“Not the softest way of phrasing it,” Gensui comments with a somber expression.
Ajiro exposits some more.
Ajiro’s grandfather Soujin is a skilled detective who up until now has solved every case thrown his way… except for one: the Kuroyashi (“black peddler”) case, which killed hundreds of yakuza members throughout a few decades. The murderer wore a black kimono and matching black garments, held white prayer beads in his hand, and hid his face behind kokushikijou, the black Noh mask of a happy old man.
It was an open secret that Kuroyashi's true identity was Fujita Kyuuzou, who killed anyone trying to encroach on Fujita-gumi’s turf in Tsuwano. Even if Soujin knew that fact well, he had never managed to gather enough proof. Strangely enough, the two ended up becoming good friends even as a detective and a suspect constantly trying to figure each other out.
Kyuuzou was missing the tip of his thumb (for typical yakuza reasons), instead wearing a magician tool called simply a thumb tip. Soujin theorized that this could be where Kyuuzou hid the murder weapon he used to kill as Kuroyashi—poison needles. Maybe his death from a hornet sting was a fitting end for someone like him.
"I trust in my grandfather's abilities, so I also believe that Kyuuzou was Kuroyashi. However, the murderer in this Case isn't just him… The mastermind was Saimon Tamako, wasn't she? As the previous Umayato no Miko, she was a true magician of murder, a professional assassin of much greater skill than Kuroyashi. Since you claim you're not the culprit, then it must be her, right? No one other than you two—the magicians of murder—would be able to orchestrate the Saimon Family Case."
Gensui doesn't move. That archaic smile returns to his face.
"It's so unlike you to say such bizarre things, Souji. I understand why you suspect me, even though I am not the culprit. But to accuse Lady Saimon, who died a year ago…"
Gensui clearly isn't going to tell them anything as readily as he confirmed being Jesus.
"Souji, Kirigirisu, I think you have misunderstood something," he continues. "Except for the incident involving Yumeji, none of the deaths were murders. Even the police said there was no case."
"Are you seriously still claiming that?" Ajiro finally breaks and shouts in anger. "All just accidents, all on the same day of the month, twelve times in a row?!"
"You truly don't know when to give up. When I requested your help, I asked you to explain how these deaths could be murders. It seems you won't be able to fulfill my request no matter how much time passes. I have no choice but to withdraw the investigation request."
"Oh, so you’re withdrawing now? I don't care! I'm not here to investigate just because you asked me. I lost two of my people in this case. I will not back down!"
Ajiro and Tensui stand against each other, a detective against a suspect, just like Soujin and Kyuuzou before them. History repeats.
"If you still wish to investigate, I'm not stopping you," Gensui says finally. "Just let me give you a friendly warning. No matter how much you try, it's impossible to solve something that’s not a murder case like it is a murder case. Souji, it might sound weird coming from me, but do not underestimate the divine providence that can be nothing other than a miracle. No human can win a battle against the heavens. Even if the best detective alive investigated this case, they still wouldn't be able to solve it. My words aren't meant to challenge you; I'm simply telling you the truth."
"Then let me also tell you the truth. No matter how great a magician of murder you may be, I won’t let anyone die today. I used everything I had to prepare. Can you still make another incident happen? Here's a friendly warning: as soon as you try, it will be all over for you. These aren't the words of challenge, but simply the truth."
Gensui's smile doesn't waver, but his eyes fill with sadness. His expression turns to that of Buddha looking with compassion at all life.
"I didn't want to tell you this, but now I feel pity for you, Souji. You will learn for certain that I am not the culprit very soon; the Case is still going to continue even after my death. I may not be a fortune-teller, but even I can predict some things. You should know, Souji, that "prediction" is even a genre of magic. Magic always has secret methods behind it, but my own prediction is simply based on reasoning, something anyone can do with enough data. I'm going to die of illness. Illnesses are given to people by the heavens, and no human can possibly fight against their orders."
Illness? This is the first time they're hearing of this. Gensui looks perfectly healthy...
"The Case started on September 19th last year," Gensui continues, "and the incidents always take place on the 19th day of the month. If the will of heavens is connected to the number nineteen, then it stands to reason that the Case might last for nineteen months in all. My life will reach its end before the Case is finished."
Suddenly, they hear a loud coo, coo and Onikaru-sama's door closes again; it must be 1 PM. Gensui takes advantage of the others' momentary confusion and turns around to leave.
"I'm not going to run or hide," he assures them. "I'm just going to join my family in the auditorium. I… even now, I hold a favorable impression of you. I'd like to spend more time with you before my life ends… Let me give you a piece of information that might prove useful. My successor, the ninety-ninth Umayato no Miko, will be my nephew Saimon Juku. Ask him whatever you wish."
With this, Gensui leaves.
--
When later that day Ajiro and Kirigirisu check on everyone gathered in the auditorium of the stage, they witness Tsukumo Tsushima suddenly falling off his chair, their fellow detective Arito Tarou crumbling to the ground right afterwards. Both die shortly after being taken to the hospital. The cause of death in both cases is determined to be acute heart failure related to overworking.
--
Ajiro and Kirigirisu resign from Nihon Tantei Club.
“You didn’t have to quit as well, Kirigirisu,” Ajiro says, though he looks a little glad.
“Boss—no, Souji… I owe you my life. I have already decided to commit my life to helping you. I will stay by your side no matter what.”
Soon, Ajiro creates a small private detective bureau with Kirigirisu as the only coworker, Mizuki taking care of office matters. The bureau is located in Ajiro’s own house, so his son Souya is constantly running around, and Kano sometimes comes to visit.
Even though they’ve just started working on their own, Ajiro gets an astounding number of investigation requests, probably because he made a name for himself as the leader of Nihon Tantei Club. In fact, it turns out many people had only called Nihon Tantei Club in the first place because Ajiro was there, and now his private bureau ends up getting more requests than the Club.
With this new wind pushing them forward, Ajiro is sure they will solve even the Saimon Family Case.
--
Just like Gensui predicted, new incidents still keep coming.
Fourteenth… On October 19th, Saimon Miku dies in the bath from carbon monoxide poisoning, indirectly caused by a wild bird’s nest blocking the chimney.
Fifteenth… On November 19th, Saimon Yurine dies from shellfish poisoning—more specifically from red tide toxins—when dining with friends in Yamaguchi.
Sixteenth… On December 19th, Saimon Akiko (junior) is found starved to death in the family’s storehouse, suspended by her arms inside the giant bell. It is noted that the girl had developed anorexia some time before and was under significant stress after her mother Yurine’s death. The police doesn’t consider the incident a murder.
--
While investigating Akiko’s death, Ajiro and Kirigirisu learn another secret behind the magic show. Three bells are used in the show, one real and two gimmicks. The gimmicks are shown on stage, while the real one is kept backstage and struck in accordance with the performers striking the gimmicks to give the impression that the latter are real. The magician can hide inside the gimmick easily and be moved somewhere else with it, so he can magically appear even in places without a trapdoor.
When armored Soga Tensui disappears behind the projection screen, he actually pulls himself up inside the bell above him. When the other bell near the front of the scene is then lowered down, the second Soga Tensui shows up from beneath it using the trapdoor. Both bells are then lowered to the ground and covered with black cloth. At this point, the bells (and the first Soga Tensui who’s still inside) are taken off stage through the trapdoor—apparently the gimmicks can be easily taken apart so they fit through. Two frames are put up instead to give the impression of two bell-like things underneath the cloth. The frames are black, so even after the Soga Tensui who’s still on stage removes the cloth, spectators can’t really see it in front of the black curtain.
--
The cases still keep coming.
Seventeenth… On January 19th, Tsukumo Touji (Tsushima’s young son) dies when a hospital nurse accidentally gives him the wrong IV drip. The boy was hospitalized due to serious malnutrition, the long-term effect of stress after his father’s sudden death.
--
If Gensui’s prediction was true, there will be two more cases, one of them surrounding his own death.
...that’s assuming he’s telling the truth. As far as Ajiro can tell, Gensui already lied to them about Saimon Juku being his future successor. When back in September the two detectives asked the boy about whether he’s Umayato no Miko, he just looked at them with honest confusion and repeated his usual ima wa kudaranai. When Ajiro explained what that phrase actually meant and asked about Prince Shoutoku, the boy still kept staring at them completely lost, visibly not understanding what on earth is going on.
When they brought this up to Gensui, he told them that Juku was just feigning ignorance; that specifically because the boy was Umayato no Miko, he wouldn’t let anyone know his secret. This explanation just sounded like Gensui trying to confuse them further.
After repeated attempts to ask Juku about the topic and never getting any solid answer, the two detectives gave up on trying to talk to him.
--
Eighteenth… On February 19th, Ajiro and Kirigirisu find Gensui’s body in front of Shouryouin. He looks so thin and miserable it’s hard to believe he could be the same healthy strong man they knew. Autopsy reveals he had last-stage cancer.
On the same day, the only remaining Soga Tensui disappears. Kirigirisu instantly thinks that the two may have switched places—the classic mystery plot twist—but Ajiro cools his enthusiasm by revealing yet another secret of the two brothers.
When Tensui (that is, the older brother Ryuusui) was a young man, he lost his left hand in the Pacific War. It’s hard to notice nowadays as he always wears a prosthetic, the movements of which can be secretly controlled with his right hand. The device was designed by the late Tousen Yomi, the genius magic prop maker. Tensui and Gensui both wore white gloves at all times to hide the difference. Apparently Tensui hates to be looked at with pity, can’t stand the prospect of being seen as “that disabled magician” rather than being recognized strictly for his art, so he trained hard to make his movements look as natural as possible. That’s also why Ajiro stayed quiet about it until now.
The body they found in front of Shouryouin definitely has a real left hand, so it can’t possibly be the older brother… although Ajiro can’t completely deny the possibility that Tensui could have been lying about his disability, and actually used an illusion to make it look like he’s removing a prosthetic hand (an event that Ajiro saw with his own two eyes once). Or maybe the person he thought to be Tensui at the time was actually Gensui, and it was him who had a prosthetic… who knows which brother was actually which.
It’s all quite confusing, but Ajiro proposes they keep calling the dead brother Gensui and the one still alive Tensui, since this is what the rest of the family will think is the case… even though he personally suspects that the person they knew as Gensui is still alive.
What a weird brotherly switcharoo.
Ajiro gets lost in thought for a long time after that conversation, as if something pushed his mind onto a completely new track. After all the funeral rites are over and the house calms down, he takes Kirigirisu along to talk with Saimon Juku one more time.
Apparently Ajiro has no intention to needlessly prolong things, as he immediately asks the boy:
“Juku… are you actually Juku?”
“Boss, what are you even saying?!”
“If Gensui told us the truth, then Saimon Juku was chosen as the next Umayato no Miko. However, the boy in front of us doesn’t even know that name. I think the brother who died in the accident wasn’t Joukei, but Juku. Gensui—no, Tensui must have known about this switch. That’s why he sounded so confident when telling us we can ask the boy anything: because the child who knew all about Umayato no Miko was already dead.”
For a long moment, the boy with sunglasses is quiet. Then—
“You're right… Juku was the one who died,” Saimon Joukei says. Tears fill his eyes. “I was supposed to be the one to die that day. The man with the white demon mask came here and said he would kill everyone if I didn’t go with him… He really should have taken me, but… but Juku went to meet him instead. Before he went, Juku said… if something happens to me, please live as me from now on...”
Then Shiroyasha was the murderer in the Saimon Family Case as well…
“And after that,” Ajiro says with an expression like he just figured something out, “you suddenly became so beautiful that people faint just looking at you. I think I can explain it. The reason why babies are cute is because that cuteness is their only weapon; they can’t do anything by themselves and have to rely on adults being charmed into providing for them. Perhaps when people have no other means to protect themselves, they can somehow make themselves more beautiful in order to survive. Joukei, I think your sudden beauty is a defense mechanism. You can’t possibly allow anyone to notice that you and Juku switched places, not after he sacrificed his own life to protect you. That’s why you turned so beautiful that no one can take a closer look at you—so no one can notice the truth.”
Even Joukei himself looks surprised learning the reason behind his beauty.
Kirigirisu wonders whether this sort of supernatural transformation is actually possible in real life… well, he already knows that the boy really does make people faint, so the only choice left is to accept the improbable.
Now that the detectives are sure the boy really doesn’t know anything more about the Case or Umayato no Miko, they decide they can’t get him tangled into any more dangerous matters. They turn back to leave.
“Mr. Ajiro! Mr. Kirigirisu!” the boy shouts, making them stop. “From now on… will you protect me?”
“Of course we will,” Ajiro answers without hesitation.

Kirby Manga Masterpost
I sometimes get people confused by how many Kirby manga there are, or the differences between them. Seeing as none have been localized, and few scanlated, there’s a lot of confusion around the different ones. So I’ve compiled a list of all the Kirby manga I’m aware of (with help of the Japanese wikia page). In total, there are 55 manga (including sequels as separate ones), with 23 serialized manga and 32 anthologies. The manga are all separate canons from each other and the games, but are still based on the games, like how the anime is a separate canon from the games, but still shares a lot of characters and plot points.
Here’s the three that are generally the ones referred to as “the Kirby manga”. All others are below the cut. Warning: it’s a very long post.
Kirby of the Stars! Moretsu Pupupu Hour! (星のカービィ! も〜れつプププアワー!), by Taniguchi Asami.
This is probably the most well known Kirby manga, and the one most people refer to as “the Kirby manga”. It was originally published in CoroCoro Comic, has 13 volumes, and ran from 2006 to 2016, covering games that released in that time period, but also has a lot of random comedy stories. It tends to give the characters more dramatic and wild personalities, such as Marx’s love for blowing up planets, and Meta Knight’s narcissism. It’s scanlated by Kirby’s Manga Funshack. (Tumblr) (MangaDex)
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Pupupu Hero (星のカービィ プププヒーロー), and its sequel, Kirby of the Stars: Ultra Super Pupupu Hero (星のカービィ ウルトラスーパープププヒーロー), by Aoki Kei and Mikamaru.
This manga is popular for its art and the fact that a lot of its chapters focus on Magolor. It tends to have very “on model” type art in comparison to Moretsu, which has more expressive, comedic art - a good way of telling the difference between them. Pupupu Hero ran in Dengeki Nintendo: For Kids from 2009 to 2013, and was compiled into two (very limited edition) manga. Ultra Super Pupupu Hero ran in Dengeki Bazooka from 2014 to 2016 until the magazine was suddenly cancelled, and was never compiled into a volume. The creators are currently petitioning for get the series reprinted, as it’s hard to find now. It’s scanlated by The Fountain of Dreams. (Tumblr) (MangaDex)
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: The Legend of Dedede in Dream Land (星のカービィ デデデでプププなものがたり), by Hikawa Hirokazu.
This one also ran in CoroCoro Comic, from 1994 to 2006, then was revived in 2017 in CoroCoro Aniki and continues to run. It has 25 volumes, plus a "Best Of" compilation and mini-″25.5″ volume. The focus is on slapstick gags and dramatic behaviors from Kirby (usually negatively affecting Dedede). It was at one point picked up to be localized by Viz, under the title Kirby, but was dropped shortly after. That is the main reason it’s still some people’s most known Kirby manga. Only a few chapters have been scanlated, by Golden Roze. (MangaDex)
Tumblr media
Serialized Manga:
Kirby of the Stars (星のカービィ), by Sakuma Yoshiko, was published in Shougaku Ichinensei, Ninensei, and Sannensei from 1992 to 2009. Compiled into 12 volumes, plus a "Best Of" and other special editions and picture books. Kirby's a troublemaker who will do anything for food, but doesn't mean to do bad. He also wasn't originally from Dream Land, being born from a flower in the shape of a tiny star in a faraway place. He ran out of things to eat while growing, so he set off on a journey, eventually getting to Dedede's Castle and eating all his food.
Tumblr media
Great Commotion in Dream Land (プププランドは大さわぎ), aka Knock Out Kirby of the Stars (かっとび星のカービィ), by Abe Sayori, was published in Shougaku Ichinensei from 1992 to 1993. The one with the strange original characters, including a human girl.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars (星のカービィ), by Chibi Nyanne, was published in Shougaku Sannensei from 1993 to 1994. Kirby frequently has a :3 face, and this series also uses human characters.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars (星のカービィ), by Maeda Noemi, was published in Shougaku Ichinensei from 1994 to 1996. Kirby has a more bratty, mischievous personality.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Exciting Grand Adventure (星のカービィ ウキウキ大冒険), by Taijan Hokuto, was published in Monthly Shounen Gag King from 1997 to 1999, and was compiled into one volume. It has a 4-koma format, but a continuous story.
Tumblr media
Pupupu Grand Adventure ~Kirby of the Stars~ (プププの大冒険 〜星のカービィ〜), by Daimaru Roketto, was published in Pocket Land from 1997 to 1998. Rick, Kine, and Coo see Kirby as a friend and send him advice, but Kirby has a self-centred personality, and doesn’t give them much care.
Tumblr media
Kirby Quiz (カービィクイズ), by Takase Hiroshi, ran in Preparation for Entry: Kindergarten Learning for an unknown amount of time around 1995 to at least 1999. The "chapters" are quizzes, puzzles, and games for kindergarten children to complete, though there's sometimes little manga along with that.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Friends of Dreamland (星のカービィ プププランドの仲間たち), by Himeno Kagemaru, was published in Shougaku Gonensei and Rokunensei from 2002 to 2003. Kirby's kind but has strange behaviours, such as making crop circles in fields and filling a pool with detergent to wash it with a tornado. He lives in a house along with Waddle Dee, Cappy, Broom Hatter, and Scarfy.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Great Commotion in Dream Land! (星のカービィ プププランドは大さわぎ!), by Himeno Kagemaru, was published in Shougaku Yonensei in 2003, with two specials, one in 2004 for Amazing Mirror and one in 2005 for Canvas Curse.
Tumblr media
Poyo Poyo Kirby (ポヨポヨカービィ), by Haribuki Shikimi, was published in Famitsu Cube & Advance from 2006 to 2009. It's a 4-koma with game information. Kirby speaks in "Poyo" like in the anime.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Kirby & Dedede's Pupupu Diary (星のカービィ カービィ&デデデのプププ日記), first by Michi Michiru, then by Matsuyama Noboru, was published in Famitsu DS+Wii from 2006 to 2016, and is currently being published in Terebi Gemu Magazine. There are 6 appendix collections (booklets only released in magazines), and one "Best Of" volume. Kirby and Dedede are often with each other in a non-hostile way.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars (星のカービィ), by Miyasumi, was published in Chara Parfait from 2006 to 2011. They're short, colour comics focusing on specific games.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Pakutto Big Laughter Show!! (星のカービィ パクッと大爆ショー!!), by Kawakami Yuuki, was published in CoroCoro Ichiban from 2012 to 2014, and compiled into two volumes. "Pakutto" is an onomatopoeia for a type of eating noise (think Pacman). It was revived just for 2015 as Kirby of the Stars: More Big Laughter Show!! (星のカービィ もっと大爆ショー!!), after the author recovered from illness.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Poyo Poyo Everyday (星のカービィ ぽよぽよな毎日), by Michi Michiru, is published in Pikopuri, starting in 2012, and is still being serialized. It's a 4-koma series, and despite being more modern, has characters showing up from the earliest games. It has a single volume so far.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Full 4-Koma Parfait♥ (星のカービィ まんぷく4コマぱふぇ♥), by Karino Tau & Poto, published in Chara Parfait Comic & Puzzle in 2013. It only ran for two months. It also has the same illustrator that does the novels' illustrations. The title's a punny one, with "Manpaku" meaning full as in "complete" but also full as in "full stomach".
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Sparkling★Pupupu World (星のカービィ キラキラ★プププワールド), by Nanjou Akisama, was published in Chara Parfait in 2014 until April, and is still publishing in Chara Parfait Comic & Puzzle. It has one volume. It's a 4-Koma that focuses on Kirby and Waddle Dee.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Daily Round Diary! (星のカービィ 今日もまんまる日記!), by Dynamic Tarou, is published in CoroCoro Ichiban, starting in 2016 and is still being serialized. Had a heavy focus on Robobot. Kirby is an innocent airhead, and Meta is a shy subordinate of Dedede who says he knows all about Kirby, but actually knows very little. Also, it's a "Manmaru Diary", with "Manmaru" meaning both "cute" and "perfectly circular/round", so it's also a punny title.
Tumblr media
Kirby of the Stars: Full Pupupu Fantasy (星のカービィ 〜まんぷくプププファンタジー〜), by Takeuchi Ibuki, is published in CoroCoro Comic, starting in 2016 and is still being serialized. It has one volume so far. Kirby's a bit dense, such as how he didn’t know how to make cup ramen. He and Dedede are friends.
Tumblr media
Anthology Comics
These all have a similar format: various non-connected 4-Koma, with each “chapter” being a collection of these strips done by a different author. They’re mostly just separated by game.

Tell us about your ocs :o
oh my god i thought the day would never come hold on got me cryin in the club
so basically ive got two main stories/universes im actively working on, 1 is ‘ARK' and the other is ‘Spawn’ and im gonna start with ARK because i can
ok so im gonna put these under a cut because im gonna GO OFF and if you want to hear about Spawn send another message because i dont wanna spam everyone with ramblings about my characters
Tumblr media
This is Luka, a raccoon boy who came to live in a settlement of other kids and teens on a secluded island. He's got issues expressing himself and often comes off as rude without meaning it. All his adopted little brothers and sisters love him though, and he absolutely adores his best friend, who’s really the only one who gets to see the sincere side of him.
Tumblr media
This is Finch, a bird boy who’s Luka’s best friend. He has a twin sister named Wren, and he loves tailoring and making clothes. He found Luka and invited him to come live with the rest of the settlement where he’d be safe. He’s super confident, outgoing, and friendly, but when his twin sister disappears without a trace, he and Luka set out to find her and end up falling into a completely new world.
Tumblr media
One of the first people they end up meeting is a bird man named Wil, who has no wings, and is very interested in having them again. He starts off as being extremely violent and ill-willed towards Finch and Luka, trying to get Finch’s wings to graft onto his own body. However, things happen and an old acquaintance of his manages to help him to snap out of his delusions, and he becomes a very loud, extravagant, but supportive guy.
Tumblr media
That old acquaintance was Pan, a snow-leopard lady who helps Finch and Luka when Wil is hunting them down. She’s been following Wil ever since he lost his wings trying to help him, but was only able to do it with the help of the boys. She’s got a sick motorcycle and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself or the weaker willed members of the group. Ultimate mom friend.
Tumblr media
This is Issu, the lost and forgotten moth prince of a kingdom of bugs. The previous four rescue him from a purple fox man named Tarou who was planning to use his status as prince to allow him to rise to power. Issu is nervous and unconfident in himself, but he rises to guide his kingdom in the absence of his mother and older brother.
Tumblr media
Finally there’s Damien, a lizard man who’s a criminal in his own desert kingdom. Despite Issu trying to smooth things over between his nation and theirs, he ends up straining their relationship when he saves Damien’s life and promises to carry out his punishment back home. Even though he was saved by the prince, Damien is notoriously hard to deal with, and absolutely refuses to be shaped into the prince’s personal bodyguard as ‘punishment’.
I’m still like. not sure how I want to tell their story, it originally started out as an RPG Maker game but then it grew from there. I’ve been debating on whether or not I should bite the bullet and do a webcomic, or swap from RPG Maker to try and learn Unity to make a metroidvania style game in this universe.
who knows hgueshugduhsuhgeuhsuhfes i love them all so much and i wanna do my story justice

I recently read through Kimi Ni Todoke and I'm embarrassingly invested in Ayapin, and now I'm so impatient waiting for more! I was wondering since it seems like you have good taste and read a lot of stuff, is there anything you can recommend that might tide me over until more KNT comes out? Are there any manga you know of with pairings that are kinda similar? I'm seriously in love with their dynamic but I'm embarrassed to ask other friends, romantic stuff is kind of a guilty pleasure for me...
Hi @mobstersought! Thank you for your message, and welcome to the ayapin life! It’s a majestic existence, full of waiting, swooning, daydreaming about big hands and hoping! :)
But mostly waiting lol - I feel your pain!
While nothing I’ve read quite fills the huge ayapin shaped hole in my heart, there are a few series that help tide me over during the long waits. Ayane and Pin have a very special dynamic that I haven’t seen anywhere else, but I’ll try to recommend some series that are kind of similar. This is a pretty long answer, so let’s continue under the cut…
Tumblr media
1) Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii by Fujita
This is a great romantic comedy series about an otaku couple: a mid-20s gamer and a fujoshi artist who work at the same company. Their relationship is really fun and cute, but I think you might enjoy the “side” couple even more. Tarou Kabakura and Hanako Koyanagi are both in their late 20s and are also otaku, but they have a playful love / hate dynamic (see the hate side above). They give each other a hard time, but at the end of the day they’re really in love with each other.
The series is a fairly realistic portrayal of otaku relationships (more or less haha), and there’s a great balance between the comedy and romance. It’s hilarious and really sweet!
Tumblr media
Bonus: there’s an anime adaptation coming out in Spring 2018, and Miyuki Sawashiro (who plays Ayane in the anime version of Kimi ni Todoke) is going to play Hanako Koyanagi!
Tumblr media
2) Takane to Hana by Yuki Shiwasu
This series has an old-school shoujo set-up, plus a ton of amazing sass. The story begins with high schooler Hana Nonomura attending a marriage interview in her older sister’s stead. Her partner is the 26 year-old scion of a huge and successful company, Takane Saibara. Their personalities clash and the matchmaking meeting is a failure…until an “interested” Takane shows up at Hana’s school!
Takane to Hana is also a really funny series - Takane and Hana come from very different backgrounds and have very different ideas about the world, but they’re both incredibly proud and stubborn. Takane tries to provoke and impress Hana with absurdly lavish gifts, but she’s always ready to knock him down a peg.
Tumblr media
It also has plenty of heart-pounding moments! The teasing dynamic between the characters means there’s a lot of tension and they’re slow to recognize their feelings.
Tumblr media
3) Shiota-sensei to Amai-chan by Kumiko Nakatoka
I recommend this manga about a student-teacher relationship because of the way it’s handled. The two main characters, Shiota-sensei and Yayoi Amai are already in a secret relationship before the start of the manga, so we don’t see a lot of drama and pining. The series is also pretty funny, and focuses on cute little episodes in their daily lives. Their dynamic isn’t like Ayane and Pin’s, but they do enjoy messing with each other.
I will warn you though - the scanlation only covers 7 of the 27 chapters in the manga and it hasn’t been updated since 2016. I ordered and read the Japanese volumes to finish the available story (it’s still ongoing). The art is really retro and fun, and the story is also great, so I’d still recommend checking it out!
Tumblr media
4) Dengeki Daisy by Kyousuke Motomi
Dengeki Daisy is sort of a modern day Daddy Long Legs story. Teru Kurebayashi is a high school student who lost her beloved older brother a few years ago; before he died, he gave her a cell phone so that she could communicate with his good friend, “Daisy”. She doesn’t know Daisy’s identity, but she exchanges emails with them and receives moral support and encouragement from this mysterious surrogate brother. One day, after accidentally breaking a window at school, she’s suddenly forced to work under the school’s 24 year-old janitor, Tasuku Kurosaki…who may or may not be her precious “Daisy”…
Teru’s personality is a bit more like Chizu’s from Kimi ni Todoke, but again, she and Kurosaki have a great teasing relationship. They’re also similar to ayapin in the sense that Kurosaki watches over Teru and provides her with gentle words of encouragement through his role as “Daisy”. This dual relationship causes a lot of tension as he starts to fall in love with her, and it becomes increasingly difficult to hide his secret.
It’s a pretty touching story that explores guilt and forgiveness, in addition to the romance. There are a ton of heart-pounding scenes, but there’s more to it than that, which is what I think makes it especially great. It’s also the only series I’ve recommended that’s complete, so you’ll be able to read it from beginning to end without having to wait (I think we’re already doing enough of that as ayapin fans, right?? Lol).
Tumblr media
I also wanted to recommend another series that I’m in love with, but that isn’t anything like Kimi ni Todoke.
Tumblr media
Koi wa Ameagari no You ni by Jun Mayuzuki
This is right up there with Kimi ni Todoke in terms of favorites for me. I will warn you that the subject matter is pretty problematic - however, I enjoy the complexity of the story and I think it’s beautifully done. The story centers around Akira Tachibana, a 17 year-old girl who was the ace of her high school’s track and field club, until an injury to her Achilles tendon during a practice meet left her unable to run. One day, alone and depressed, she seeks shelter from the rain in a family restaurant - while waiting for the rain to stop, the 45 year-old manager brings her a free cup of coffee and cheers her up with a magic trick. Touched by his kindness, Akira gets a job at the family restaurant to be close to him…
Tumblr media
I can’t recommend this enough. The two main characters help and heal each other, and their relationship is really sweet, complicated, and well-done. Even when he knows how she feels, he tries very hard to discourage her and maintain boundaries, so it’s not a story about an older man taking advantage of a teenage girl. If you like unconventional friendships / romances, forbidden love, and difficult situations, this is definitely a must! The author has a very unique art style and approaches her story almost as a work of literature - it’s probably one of the best romance manga series I’ve read. Though it can be very serious, there are plenty of light comedic moments too, and all of the characters are really interesting - the series focuses on more than just the potential romance between the main characters. It’s also getting an anime adaptation in January, so that’s really exciting!
Sorry for the super long answer, but I hope these recommendations help tide you over as you wait for more ayapin!! :)

For Matna
I think I’ve done her justice so far. Let me know if anything needs tweaking.
Nadirah stared down blankly at the dwarf as he ranted angrily at her. Behind him, the druid lay panting on the grass, her dark fur glistening with sweat. The dwarf pointed back at the ill doe several times during his furious outburst, but nothing he said made her stir.
“Ok, so I didn't understand a single word you said.” Nadirah finally interrupted, patience at its end. “But this was supposed to be a one day trip. This is our third rest stop and your 'wife' is only getting sicker and slowing us down. At this rate, we won't make it there within a week. So either you make her get up and keep moving, or I leave you both behind. If she can't walk, you can carry her.”
“Please...” The druid croaked weakly. “Just a few more minutes and I'll be just fine. I promise.”
“That's the same promise you made the last two times we stopped as well, but I don't see you getting any better.” Nadirah called back over the dwarf's head.
The dwarf made a rude gesture at the MidKnight before scurrying to the druid's side and muttering to her.
“There's no need for that.” The druid replied softly. “I'm sure it's the undead king's influence and not bad breeding,...” She stopped talking a moment to catch her breath before continuing. “That accounts for her bad manners.”
Nadirah gave a snort of annoyance. “Are you coming? Or do I put you out of my misery?”
“No.” The druid replied, panting heavily. “We...we're coming.” Rising to her feet was a struggle, even with the assistance of her dwarven husband, but the druid finally stood and began to hobble unsteadily toward the MidKnight.
“If you can keep yourself alive for a few more hours, we should reach their camp.” Nadirah said with an irritated snort. “Then maybe I'll finally be left alone.”
The dwarf and druid exchanged hushed words as they walked, but Nadirah neither spoke nor listened. Several times she had to slow her pace and would pretend to find tracks or hear a threatening noise as an excuse to stop and wait for the pair to catch up. The first sun had set and was being followed by the second when Nadirah finally halted and turned to look back at her followers. “It should be just over this swell here. They don't tend to move very fast.” Without waiting for them, she turned and began hurrying in the indicated direction. She stopped as she crested the small hill, her shoulders slumping wearily and her head drooping low. “Ah hell.”
“What?” The druid wheezed. “Have they already gone?” The pair awkwardly hurried to join Nadirah on the hill, but were also struck still by what lay before them.
The ground had been torn up and trampled into mud. Mutilated bodies lay scattered haphazardly. A cart had been overturned, its contents strewn around it. “Ghouls!” The druid spoke in a harsh whisper.
Nadirah walked to one of the corpses, which had once been a tarin bull, and knelt down to inspect the wounds.
“You! You did this, didn't you!” The druid accused, jabbing a finger angrily in the MidKnight's direction. “You killed them!”
“No.” Nadirah replied calmly. “And it wasn't ghouls, either.”
“And how would you know?” The druid demanded.
Nadirah took her time standing back up, taking a moment to look around her. “Because none of them were eaten.” She finally replied. “Controlled ghouls are basically just mindless mouths that happen to still be connected to a body. This is different.”
“What do you mean... different?” The druid panted heavily. Carefully, she lowered herself to the ground and leaned on her husband for support. “Different how?”
“Who or whatever did this tore the victims apart and then left them. It almost looks like an attack by the Kin, but why would they come all the way here?” The MidKnight's ears twitched alertly as she searched the immediate area for any sign of danger.
“The Kin?” The druid wheezed. “What in the world are-”
“Hush.” Nadirah interrupted. “Did you hear that?” Without waiting for an answer, she turned and stormed off.
The druid carefully dragged herself to her feet, barely able to keep her balance, and followed her. The dwarf grunted with the effort of keeping her upright but did not offer complaint. The pair found her a short distance away, kneeling at the head of a kordox. At first the druid thought the mountainous beast was dead. The shafts of two arrows protruded from its shaggy side, and another rested deep in its shoulder. Rings of old blood crusted the fur surrounding the wounds. Its breathing was so shallow that its side barely moved.
As the pair came closer, the druid saw a large dark eye peering out from beneath its thick mane. As it spotted them, it let out a mournful moan and shuddered. The MidKnight had one hand resting on the animal's neck while another gently stroked its broad muzzle. “Can you heal him?” She softly asked without looking away from the big brown beast.
The druid shook her head, again sinking to the ground. “No, not in the shape I'm in. I never trained as a healer anyway. But maybe we could find-”
“Understood.” Nadirah interrupted again. “You may rest now, my friend.” She spoke in soft tones to the kordox. The druid watched in horror as one hand swiftly moved to her belt to grab a small dagger, which she used to cut the kordox's throat. The beast gave a brief noise of protest before falling silent. Its eyes rolled back in panic before sliding closed.
“What did you do?!” The druid screamed, immediately regretting the waste of energy.
The MidKnight raised her head to look at her questioningly before wiping the blade clean on a patch of fur and returning it to her belt.
“You killed it!” The druid continued, struggling for enough breath to yell.
“Why would you ask me a question you already know the answer to?” Nadirah asked, rising to her feet.
“You killed that poor thing!” The druid accused again. “You monster!”
Nadirah gave an irritated snort, her gaze moving from the ill druid to the dead kordox, then back again. “This animal would not have lasted more than a few more hours and you would rather leave it to suffer alone. But I'm the monster. I see.”
“You killed it.” The druid's voice broke and tears began to moisten the fur around her eyes.
Nadirah sighed and turned away. “You do like to point out the obvious, don't you. At least now it will be useful for us.” She walked over to one of the corpses and began to drag it closer to the dead kordox. “I might be strong enough to make two of them.”
“What do you mean?” The druid sobbed. “What are you doing?” The dwarf looked uncomfortable at her display of emotion.
“You can't walk and I'm tired of waiting on you.” Nadirah said, dragging a second corpse to the first. “I'm going to summon us some mounts. They won't be pretty and they won't last long, but it's faster than dragging you by your tail.”
The druid fell to all fours, her tears burned away by a burst of rage. “What!” she exclaimed. “You would desecrate the bodies of my fallen brothers and sisters to practice your forbidden magic?”
“I doubt they'll complain any. They don't seem to be using them anymore.” Nadirah drew her dagger and looked around the darkening surroundings again.
“You really are a monster.” The druid hissed, her fingers tearing into the soil.
“Not as much as whoever killed them.” The MidKnight replied, drawing the blade swiftly across her palm. “I was wrong about the Kin. They don't use weapons to kill. So we need to get out of here before they come back.” Curling her fingers, she tossed her hand as if casting seeds. Small drops of black blood splashed into the air before landing on the two piles of bodies.
The druid looked away as the corpses began to shiver and writhe, the ground around them beginning to crack. Despite odd sounds she heard, she refused to look back until finally it was silent. Finally daring a glance, she nearly screamed at the abominations that stood before the MidKnight, submitting to her inspection.
The smaller of the two golems almost resembled a horse at first glance, with the appearance of a long neck and sloping, triangular head. But as the druid looked closer, she realized that what she had mistaken for a neck was actually made of several intertwined arms, ending in a pair of forearms, bent at the elbow and interlocked at the fingers as if to form a mouth. Lidless eyes stared out from the cradle of inner elbows.
The rest of the creature was a further amalgamation of misplaced parts, including the face of a tarous bull stretched across the golem's shoulder, the bull's horns sticking out at odd angles. The large of the two was more reasonable with almost no mutations except that the creature's rib cage appeared to have been inverted, sticking up through the pelt to create a sort of saddle, the belly of the beast concave with its loss.
“Not my best work, admittedly, but I think they'll do.” Nadirah said, giving the former kordox an affectionate pat. “We need to hurry, though. They only last a few hours.”
“Do? Do for what?” The druid asked in horror. “You don't expect me to do something with those horrid things, do you?”
Nadirah turned her head to look at the druid, tail whipping in irritation. “No. I'll be controlling them. All you have to do is stay on.”
The ride was hard and long, taking several hours to cross the hilly grasslands. The druid managed to stay righted only with help from her dwarf husband, her own failing health worsening with every step of the hellish creation she rode.
Nadirah took no notice of her plight, her own attention focused on scanning the land and controlling the golems. When she finally spotted a small village, she slowed the golems, approaching carefully.
As she expected, the protectors of the village gathered quickly as she approached, their weapons and bodies held in threatening poses. The flight of a spear brought their progress to a temporary halt, the doe's eyes tracking its progress until it sank harmlessly into her mount's flank. The amalgam gave no indication of distress at the wound, and was soon moving forward again.
Nadirah's ears flattened with the throwing of another spear that sank near her leg. “If one more of those come my way, I won't be coming in peace anymore!” She yelled to the gathered protectors, tiring of their warnings.
Instead of ceasing the attacks, the group charged, surrounding the golems and their riders, weapons held at the ready. “What do you want?” Demanded a young bull, his battle axe held ready to swing. “Why do you bring the necromancer's beasts to our home?”
Nadirah's tail lashed in irritation and her eyes narrowed, but she kept her voice even as she spoke. “I came because we require a healer.” The doe's ears snapped forward as the loud thump of a heavy body striking the ground reached her. Immediately the midknight's body relaxed, although she didn't bother to turn her head to look for the source of the sound. “Oh. Never mind. The problem seems to have corrected itself.”
Chapter 8
Matna awoke with a gasp, pursued by her nightmares. Frantically, she clawed at the air until the images melted away. If she expected comfort, she found none as she looked around the unfamiliar room that was mostly empty but for the mattress she was laying on and a messy bedroll near by.
Closing her eyes, Matna tried to clear her mind while taking several deep breaths. As she felt herself grow calm, she began to search her memory for where she was and how she had gotten there. Brief flashes of images began to surface. A fire. A fever. A doe with glowing eyes. Monsters with tarous faces stretches across their hides rising from the ground. The glowing eyed doe again.
Footsteps interrupted her thoughts and made her eyes snap open. At the opposite side of the small room, the door began to slowly swing open, making the doe sit up and lift her arms defensively. She felt a tingling in her skin as it began to wrinkle, her body preparing itself for the fight begun in her own mind.
The door finally went still and a shaggy head poked in, a pair of dark spectacles pointed in her direction. Instantly the druid relaxed as she recognized her mate. “Ah good, you're finally up.” The dwarf said in his thick brawl of an accent. Shoving the door aside, he carried two large steaming bowls into the room, handing one to Matna as he approached her.
“How long have I been out?” She asked, bowing her head to sniff the bowl's contents. Deciding that the smell was palatable enough, she glanced down at the contents, seeing what appeared to be a breakfast gruel with chunks of dried fruit mixed in.
“Handful of days.” The dwarf replied. He then plunked himself down on the bedroll and began to slurp down the gruel.
Matna brought her bowl to her mouth to take a tentative sip. “And where are we? What of the MidKnight?”
The dwarf took his time in answering, too busy noisily slurping down his meal to speak. Finally the bowl was lowered and he looked at her, letting out a large belch and swiping his arm across his mouth. “Aye, that.” The empty bowl was put aside and his eyes fell her her own, although Matna made no move to offer him her unfinished portion. “That nasty-tempered hess out there managed to find us a training camp. Bunch of unblooded calves. But they make a good porridge, says I.”
“You think everything is good if it fits in your big mouth.” Matna grumbled as she lifted her own bowl for another mouthful. “But what happened with her? They didn't harm her, did they?”
“It lives.” The dwarf replied callously. “Swingin' in a cage outside is all. They don't know what to do with it yet.”
The druid sighed through her nostrils and tipped back her bowl to finish her meal. Setting the empty dish aside, she closed her eyes and leaned back her head to sort through her tangled thoughts. The fever was gone, for which she was thankful, and she was sure her strength would return soon enough. “I'm not sure what should be done with the Midknight either. Obviously such a dangerous creation of the undead king can't be allowed to roam around free. But... she did save my life.” She opened her eyes to look down at the bored-looking dwarf. “Or was that a hallucination?”
The dwarf gave an indignant snort. “Aye, suppose that's one way you could describe what happened. If you want to be nice.”
“I was...” Matna closed her eyes again and rubbed her forehead. “Things started to get a little fuzzy after those.... things... were created. Did I really ride one of those monstrosities? It almost feels like a dream.”
“T'weren't no dream, lass.” He replied with a shake of his head. “Waking nightmare, mayhaps, though. I'll go tell the calves you're up. Or try too, anyway. All daft, these 'uns. Keep askin' me what I said and giving me these stupid stares like I'm flick'n me lips!”
Matna said nothing as her husband collected the bowls and left, but she knew well the difficulties of understanding the dwarf's mangled common. Only months of familiarity allowed her to understand him easily. Not that their time together had increased her affection for him or his habits. She furiously forced the memory from her thoughts as soon as it began to rise, the wounds still far to fresh to poke at.
A soft knock drew her attention and she looked to the door. “Come in.” She called after several seconds of silence. The door cracked open slowly and an inquisitive head popped in. “Ah, good. You're finally awake.” The doe spoke, her head disappearing behind the door again before it suddenly swung wide open.
The doe filled the space of the doorway, a large woven basket filling her arms. As she entered the small space, she paused a moment to kick the door closed behind her before walking over to Matna. As the basket was set down on the floor beside her, Matna could see that it was filled with steaming water and several cloths. “That hill-hopper you were traveling with found me and kicked up a bit of a fuss, so I figured either you were worse or better, but I should check on you either way.” The doe smiled and knelt on the floor next to the basket. “How do you feel?”
“I feel...” Matna paused a moment to think about the question. Several answers floated through her mind. Devastated. Disgusted. Enraged. Alone. All of them were appropriate, but none of them were the answer the other doe was looking for. “Much better now. Thank you.” She finally answered. “Whatever you all did for me, it certainly helped.”
The grey doe's smile widened, but she shook her head. “Just gave you a place to sleep and kept you cool until the fever broke. You did all the rest yourself.” Suddenly her smile melted away and her eyes narrowed. “You're quite lucky, you know. That midknight nearly turned you into a ghoul! You and the hill-hopper did good to bring her to us. A messenger has already been sent and there's a squad on their way to come fetch her.”
Matna nodded, but a tickling in her conscience made her frown and flatten her ears. “What will they do with her?” She asked softly, unable to meet the other doe's gaze.
“Execute the creature would be my best guess.” The grey doe replied. “Can't have those things wandering around freely, now can we.”
“No... I suppose we can't.” Matna spoke, her tone growing increasingly morose. “But...” Her lips tightened as she fought with herself. The grey doe watched her with an interested stare but did not speak. “Never mind.” She finally finished, hanging her head wearily.
The other doe shrugged and her smile returned. “Well, I imagine you could really use a good wash, so I brought you some hot water. I've already steeped the soap root. Your clothes have already been taken care of, so I'll bring them in to you shortly. If you need anything, just give a shout for Shashjii.”
“Thank you.” The druid said softly, waiting for the younger doe to leave before she rose to bathe.
It was several hours before Matna finally emerged from the room. The bath had been soothing and it felt good to be in clean garments again, although she knew they wouldn't stay that way for long. She had taken her time painting her face, carefully drawing each symbol to denote her station and abilities. The pair of claws that graced each of her cheeks warned those in the know that she was a skilled fighter and shape-shifter while the stylized feather along her snout hinted at her form of flight.
Not every druid could shift, and of those who could, very few took the form of a bird to do it. Matna took pride in being in such a minority class. Birds were the most difficult animal to learn to change into because they had no equal in all of Eidra, and to fly as one was something only the most skilled and most determined could ever hope to accomplish.
Head held high, she took her first step outside. She had to blink rapidly several times until her eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight. With trepidation, she looked around the small encampment, expecting to be mobbed by curious or suspicious young warriors, but she was largely ignored except for a few polite nods in passing.
Small shacks similar to the one she had just vacated randomly spotted the fenced in area. They appeared to be hastily erected from whatever scavenged wood could be found nearby; temporary lodging meant to be torn down and abandoned once the occupants were ready to leave.
It didn't take her long to spot the hanging cage. It had been created just as hastily as the structures, and it's purpose was just as temporary. Made from spears and scavenged branches lashed together, the odd contraption was barely bigger than the doe it held. It swung lazily a few feet above the ground from the joining of three long poles. As Matna moved closer, she saw that the dreaded MidKnight appeared to be asleep inside the container. The undead doe had shattered parts of the barrier large enough to stick her legs out, allowing only the very tips of her hooves to drag across the grass as she leaned back against the make-shift bars.
Matna couldn't help but wonder if the Midknight had the strength to shatter the rest of the cage, and if so, why she had made no attempts to escape already. She stopped a few feet from the cage and peered in at its occupant curiously. Despite giving the appearance of sleep, the midknight's ears twitched to follow the druid's every movement. She had no doubt that the prisoner could still cause trouble at the first opportunity. A dangerous predator at rest was still dangerous.
“You don't have to pretend.” Matna said softly. “I know you're not asleep.” The midknight gave no indication she heard her speak. She made no movement and her eyes remained closed. “You're not fooling anyone, you know.” She said louder. Again, the Midknight remained silent. Even her ears remained in place to continue tracking the druid's movements while giving no importance to her words.
Matna wrapped her arms across her chest and snorted in irritation at the Midknight. Just by existing, she was an abomination and a danger to everyone around her. And yet, she hadn't actually tried to harm anyone yet. Her very actions had been atrocious, but the druid's life had been saved. The Midknight was a confusing puzzle, and Matna hated not being able to understand.
“Why did you save me?” She finally spoke again, her voice raising with the shortening of her temper. “Why didn't you kill us? You had every opportunity.”
The Midknight finally opened her eyes, their soft glow almost invisible in the bright sunshine. Her gaze was as sharp as a dagger. “You know, as I sit here counting clouds, I ask myself that exact same question.”
Matna's mouth drew tightly together. She felt the slimy grip of guilt war in her mind with common sense. “I feel like I owe you some sort of thanks, ancestors only know why. But you know I can't let you out of there.”
“Your overwhelming show of gratitude is thanks enough.” The Midknight snipped irritably before closing her eyes again.
Matna let out a noise akin to a growl. “They're going to execute you, know know.” She snapped.
“I know they plan to try.” The Midknight replied calmly without opening her eyes.
“And you're not going to do anything about that?” Matna's tail began to swish furiously back and forth.
“I'm too busy wondering why you won't go away and leave me alone.” The Midknight said.
“Because I.... I...” She paused, unable to finish the statement. She wasn't sure herself why she couldn't seem to leave the other alone. Part of her was driven by the guilt of her unrepaid rescue, but she also knew that there was more to it than that. She briefly wondered if it was because she had already experienced so much loss that she couldn't stand to lose any more, even if it was someone she detested.
The Midknight's eyes reopened and pinned the druid in place. The glow burned brightly with hatred. Her lips pulled back in an expression of murderous intent. “Let me guess,” she sneered. “It's complicated?” Giving a disdainful snort, the doe turned her head away. Her legs stretched out and dug her hoof tips deeper into the earth, using a series of tiny steps to turn the cage around until her back was to the druid.
It would have been comical had Matna not been so taken aback by her behavior.

Bookshelf Briefs 9/18/17
Akashic Records of Bastard Magica Instructor, Vol. 1 | By Hitsuji Tarou, Tsunemi Aosa and Kurone Mishima | Seven Seas – Combining a magical academy story with the ‘eccentric guy who ends up being a good teacher’ story that manga likes so much isn’t a bad idea, and Akashic Records does a decent job of it, though it gets off to a sluggish start. Frankly, Glenn is far too irritating to bear, and this one of the rare times where you are 100% behind the angry tsundere from the start. Of course, what he really needed was something to snap him out of his funk, and once he decides to actually turn on his brain and start teaching, things get exponentially better. It’s still a standard light novel adaptation, but I’m interested in seeing where it goes next. – Sean Gaffney
Anonymous Noise, Vol. 4 | By Ryoko Fukuyama | Viz Media – A good deal of this volume is devoted to a flashback showing us how the band In No Hurry came to be, and while a lot of the narrative points I was expecting were absent (why were they all hospitalized long-term?), the emotional beats were there. Certainly it was more entertaining than the love triangle we’re getting here. Not that it’s not well-written—in fact, the reverse may be the case. I’d rather go back to the standard shoujo cliche of having one person have it all together while the others flail. Seeing all three characters do stupid things and then immediately castigate themselves can be exhausting. On the bright side, we get more of Nino screaming, which remains the book’s high point. – Sean Gaffney
Anonymous Noise, Vol. 4 | By Ryoko Fukuyama | VIZ Media – I think I may only enjoy this series when Nino is performing, because the best moment in this volume is the brief one in which she accompanies herself on Momo’s guitar. The rest of it involves romantic angst from the two boys who have appropriated Nino’s voice as their personal property, unsuccessful attempts at comedy, and some (vague and improbable) backstory about how the band came to be. I did appreciate that Nino comes to see herself as a caretaker of her bandmates’ dream, and the parallel that while Nino has been hoping that her singing would bring Momo back to her, Yuzu has been hoping that his music would do the same with her. While this volume was a little on the meh side, I do look forward to the rock festival performance coming up in volume five. – Michelle Smith
Bloom Into You, Vol. 3 | By Nakatani Nio | Seven Seas – The first half of this volume is far more light-hearted than the rest of the series to date, which is fun but may be to its detriment. When it’s relaxing and showing the characters being happy, Bloom into You is like any other yuri series. But when Touko is being so aggressively forward that you want to slug her, or when Yuu is once again reminding us that she may very well be asexual (though that does not stop her from being lonely, as someone else pointedly notes), the series takes it to the next level, albeit a very uncomfortable one. There’s also another pairing casually introduced here that startled me, but I suspect the reason for it was more to have more adult ‘mentors’ the kids can ask for advice. Good stuff. – Sean Gaffney
Complex Age, Vol. 6 | By Yui Sakuma | Kodansha Comics – Complex Age has been pretty upsetting at times, so I confess that I totally looked at the last page to make sure Nagisa looked happy before I committed to reading this final volume. Its pace is somewhat accelerated, covering about a year after Nagisa’s meeting with her mother’s loli-loving friend as she tries to figure out what it is she loves best about cosplay and what kind of new shape it might become in her life. True, her conclusion is somewhat bittersweet, but it’s hopeful too, and I think that’s just the right combination for this series. If you were put off by the rough going in the middle volumes, take heart that this final installment remains realistic, but isn’t gloomy. I’ve really enjoyed this series. – Michelle Smith
Demon King Daimaou, Vol. 2 | By Shoutaro Mizuki and Souichi Itou | J-Novel Club – It’s finally happened: I’ve come across a light novel with so little to say about it that it’s only getting a brief. The light novel world is not exactly littered with deep, meaningful stories, but even among the fluff Demon King Daimaou is still pretty throwaway. That said, it’s not actively bad, and reads quickly—I don’t feel a need to drop it, I just feel no need to worry about what happens next. It’s at its best when at its least serious, such as Akuto’s constant desire to not seem like a villain, and the fact that he always does. (He’s desecrating hundreds of hero’s graves… but for good reasons!) As for the girls, we get a new one here, whose first scene amused me, but they’re as forgettable as anything. Only if you really liked the anime. – Sean Gaffney
Everyone’s Getting Married, Vol. 6 | By Izumi Miyazono | VIZ Media – This series is in somewhat of a holding pattern, despite a few changes. Asuka keeps coming into contact with Kamiya, who keeps trying to wear her down on marrying him despite the fact that she’s told him in no uncertain terms to back off and that she isn’t interested, and Ryu continues to be troubled by this. There are a few new elements in this volume with the introduction of Asuka’s protective 18-year-old brother Kanade and the fact that she and Ryu officially move in together, but since a) Kanade puts forth Kamiya as an alternate candidate and b) oopsies, they moved into Kamiya’s building, it’s really just more of the same. Everyone’s Getting Married is still fairly entertaining, but it’s not at all surprising or exciting, even with the possibility that Ryu will be transferred overseas. – Michelle Smith
Golden Time, Vol. 8 | By Yuyuko Takemiya and Umechazuke | Seven Seas – Linda returns in this volume… though it’s more about Banri returning, as he goes with her to a class reunion. The reunion itself goes off fairly well, and doesn’t really bring back too much. Unfortunately, he does have a bit of a breakdown later on in the middle of a festival dance, which leads to disaster. (And holy crap, that festival guy yelling at the cast was appalling. I really really hated him.) As for Banri and Kouko, it seems they’re doing very well, though I suspect both are trying just a little too hard—I have a nasty suspicion the next volume will be even more dramatic, especially after the medication discovery. Golden Time is heavy-duty romantic drama, but worth the slog. – Sean Gaffney
Haikyu!!, Vol. 15 | By Haruichi Furudate | Viz Media – Answering the cliffhanger from last volume, we get a few chapters showing us who Karasuno will be facing in the semifinals. The actual winner is not a surprise, but the author does a good job at keeping things tense anyway. As for the main event, it’s what you’d expect from a sports manga. Our heroes have shown off that they’re not the team they were before, but their opponent also has a few tricks up their sleeves, and so things could go either way. I like the constant emphasis on how important momentum is to a game. And of course things end with Yamaguchi, on the sidelines, desperate to make up for his earlier play. Classic Jump sports manga, and you should be reading it. – Sean Gaffney
Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You, Vol. 27 | By Karuho Shiina | Viz Media – Credit to Pin, he is doing his best to make sure the ship with Ayano does not get further—something Ayano is tearfully aware of as well, though at least she’s started to openly admit her feelings. That said, Pin is up against the author here, and so I’m not sure how things will go. I’m not… TOTALLY against the ship, but I want it to wait till he’s not her teacher in any case. The other big news is that Kazehaya finally confronts his father, and the two learn a lot more about their similarities. They both communicate poorly, though Kazehaya has gotten better now that he’s dating Sawako. As for Sawako, after a long sweet date she admits she’s applying to the educational university, and he can how happily cheer her on. Sweet stuff. – Sean Gaffney
No Game No Life, Please!, Vol. 2 | By Kazuya Yuizaki and Yuu Kamiya | Yen Press – This is pretty much exactly what hardcore NGNL fans would want out of a spinoff manga, which means about half of it is not my cup of tea, because heavy fanservice and fetishes just don’t do much for me. I’m also not fond of the suggestion that Fi and Chlammy is a yuri pairing, and this book really loves to suggest it in unsubtle ways. It’s at its best when developing the characters, be it Steph thinking on her feet (or with her bladder) to escape a dungeon that Jibril has created, or Izuna continuing to learn from the masters—our sibling heroes—on how to both improve her gaming skills and also have more fun. Lacking a proper manga version, this is a decent alternative for those who want pictures. – Sean Gaffney
One-Punch Man, Vol. 12 | By ONE and Yusuke Marata | Viz Media – The tournament is perhaps the least interesting part of this volume. In that, it’s not dissimilar to many other tournament battle manga, though those lack the deadpan blaseness of our hero. Fortunately, there’s also a slew of monsters and villains attacking outside the arena, which allows Genos to remind us he’s still really tough despite being Saitama’s self-appointed lackey. The best scenes, though, involved Blizzard and her sister Tornado, whose family issues certainly seem to be deeply seated—Blizzard’s almost jaded “don’t worry, she’ll be coming to save me anyway” is well done, and you really sympathize with her here, especially with Tornado at her most arrogant. Essential, despite the tournament. – Sean Gaffney
