Listen, listen, hear me out ok please-
I wanna talk about Tarantulas for a second, like specifically the multiple posts I've seen of people saying "Well ofc they toned down Tarantulas, it's a kid show"
I... ?? Listen I know you guys are all referring to IDW when ya'll say that, but BW Tarantulas was like, his own breed of fucked up and BW was for all intents and purposes a kid's show. He's not the same as IDW, but again he's got his own thing that's pretty fucky. And also like. Earthspark is really dark too? Or at least it's leading up to be??
SPOILER WARNING but uh, yeah no G.H.O.S.T is hella fucked up if you think about it for more than a minute. Everything they're doing to the cons with the memory wiping and generally how they're treated is really bad (in a good way I love this show-), and also labeling Bee a 'rouge Autobot' that they're trying to arrest, yeah not cool-
Plus. The last episode of Season 1?? Mandroid and his... EVERYTHING??? Bee having his fucking energon drained???? Did we all just forget that???????
I think they absolutely could've made Tarantulas really like, fucked if they wanted to. But I don't think they wanted that, I think they wanted a new take on his character? I mean, that's a huge part of transformers, no? Look at all the different conts and how characters change between them-
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think Tarantulas was toned down due to mandates or anything, I genuinely believe they just,, wanted to put a spin on him and make him more chill and lonesome, and something of a tragic anti-hero cause,,, I dunno, they just thought it'd be neat!

Earthspark(?) Prowl/Tarantulas oneshot
This one's gonna be really short.
I and a friend of mine have been thinking of what Prowl and Tarantulas might be in Earthspark season 2. At this point we've basically made our version of Prowl for this show and shipped him with their Tarantulas LOL
Truth be told, the lab was fairly quiet, with only a low rattle of metal against metal, and the hum of a radio jammed somewhere in a far corner of the room. It was only in Tarantulas’ mind that this was all a raging tornado. Submerged in his own mind, he dashed from shelf to shelf, grabbing unidentified pieces of electronics and hardly more identifiable tools that only he knew how to use. There was no world to him in this moment, none other than this sudden burst of inspiration.
He eventually halted by his worktable, staring at the blueprint scribbled on the holoboard in front of him. He couldn’t be certain that it would work, given that he’d only come up with it minutes before, but the concept seemed flawless. His optics glistened and he happily got to building.
So absorbed was he that he never heard the sound of someone approaching. Prowl stopped a couple steps away, just far enough to avoid getting in Tarantulas’ way. He watched. It was so familiar to him, seeing the spider bot at work, and it made Prowl feel like something was clutching at his chest. And, he was able to tell now, that was not a bad feeling. The only bad part of it was that it held a clutch on his throat as well, which had him worried. Saying the words was difficult for him. But he knew the right ones this time - he thought he did - and right now, he could say them. He could. That was something he was not going to miss.
He took a step closer as he noticed that Tarantulas calmed down a bit. Perhaps he had some precise piece of work to do, that usually made him cool down. He heard Prowl this time and rose his gaze from his work.
“Oh, hello”, he said, excitement still vibrating in his voice.
“Hello”, Prowl responded blandly, walking around the worktable to stand next to him.
“Is it something important? I’m busy right now.” Tarantulas gestured proudly at the pile of shapeless metal and cables in front of him.
He snapped back to reality quickly enough when Prowl gave him no answer, instead moving closer to his side and sliding a hand into his own. Silence came over them. Prowl was staring at their hands, and he felt the clutch on his throat tighten. He, too, squeezed Tarantulas’ hand. He felt it in his spark when Tarantulas gave it back.
He could say it. He knew exactly what to say.
“Is something wrong?”, Tarantulas asked, his voice filled with worry. He could never be sure when Prowl did this. But he need not worry, Prowl thought as he pulled his hand back. Keeping his breath steady, he looked up at Tarantulas’ face.
And said:
“I love you. I wanted you to know. No, I wanted to tell you”, he corrected himself.

Alright so I just finished Earthspark and boy fucking howdy do I have opinions, but I’m not talking about those right now because I’m tired and the ending broke me in such a way I no longer care about anything.
What I would like to say though is I think Tanatulas should have been replaced with Shockwave in that on episode he had with Nightshade. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Tanatulas. He was literally so good, I loved his designs and his vibes and the only bad thing about him is that he never said his pronouns back. But really think about it. He didn’t have to be there. Earthspark spends too much time with the Maltos to really develop anyone so the more characters you add the more everything struggles.
Tanatulas showed up for one episode, he’s not even in the finale. Shockwave was there though and vaguely important, but it doesn’t make sense for him to just suddenly be okay with the Maltos. Unless he took Tanatulas role. Then his sudden willingness to help them would have made so much more sense. It also wouldn’t have been a very hard change, just as a whole, because neither Tanatulas or Shockwave are that important.
Just give Nightshade a line about how they should save Shockwave because they trust him and well everyone else acts the same.
Shockwave even fills a similar general role as Tanatulas being a weird scientist who care more about their science than the war. So it really wouldn’t be a hard switch and would make Shockwave make more sense. If you want to go further too Shockwave doesn’t even have a normal vehicle mode so he really could have given similar lines about alt modes to Nightshade.
Obviously Shockwave actual introduction episode would be different or maybe he’d just get replaced entirely but I really don’t think any of those changes would be too hard. Because again, he’s just not important enough for any changes to his character to be hard.
Tanatulas in Earthspark doesn’t validate his existence much as is. I really do love him, but he’s replaceable and just clutters an already poorly handled cast. While I think it would be cool if he was just more important they clearly didn’t want that by not even giving him a finale shot. So I do think just swapping his episode with Shockwave (and whatever other alterations are needed to make that perfect) fixes the problem with having too many underdeveloped characters since it removes one character and in the process developes another.
