10 places to see in Mount Pelion, Greece in autumn
Pelion is a very beautiful lush green mountain in a privileged location in the heart of Greece. It lies on the east of Thessaly, in the prefecture of Magnesia. The mountain forms a curved peninsula into the sea, which creates a gulf, and consequently is surrounded by water; the Pagasetic Gulf on one side and the open Aegean Sea on the other, together blessing it with beautiful and diverse coastline. Another of its charms is its famed architecture, as Mount Pelion has been relatively densely inhabited for centuries. During the Ottoman Occupation, Pelion managed to maintain a local aristocratic society, thanks to its proximity to Volos city. All these elements combined create an idyllic scenery - lush mountain vistas, breathtaking beaches and elaborate traditional architecture. Here are 10 beautiful places in Mount Pelion to visit in autumn.
1. Makrinitsa
One of the most accessible villages of Pelion, Makrinitsa is only a few minutes from the port city of Volos. Like several villages nearby, Makrinitsa offers tremendous views to the city and its harbour, the gulf and even the Sporades islands in the distance. Makrinitsa has maintained its architecture in perfect conditions and has not been affected by the many tourists. When there, do try the local spoon sweets and the herbs. It is recommended to stay in one of the many traditional mansions that have been turned into boutique hotels. Nearby villages just as attractive are Portariá and Vyzitsa.

2. Miliés
It is one of the most quaint villages of Pelion and the final destination of the century old train ¨Moutzouris¨. Milies has one of the oldest public libraries of Greece and a very unusual church built in 1741. You should go there by taking the small beautiful train from Volos city, have a dessert in singer Tania Tsanaklidou´s coffee shop "Ἀννα να ένα μήλο" and do a 14 km hike that will take you to the villages Pinakates and Vyzitsa and then back.

3. Tsagarada
Tsagarada is possibly the most popular mountainous village of Pelion. It is a large village built in lush scenery and close to stunning beaches like Mylopótamos, Damoúhari and Fakistra, which you should absolutely visit if the weather is mild. You should also see the gigantic 1000 year old plane tree in the square and eat in its restaurants, especially the sophisticated "Dipnosofistis". Tsagarada is also ideal for horse riding and hiking.

4. Stayates
Close to Volos yet still mostly unknown to tourists, Stayates offers beautiful architecture and authentic village lifestyle. Stayates has been well known for the quality of its livestock produce, exporting meat inland and abroad. Stayates also has so great springs that people from Volos used to go to this village to fill their pitchers with crystal clear water.

5. Lafkos
Lafkos is ideal for peaceful vacation. You should enjoy the views to the Pagasetic Gulf under the plane trees of its square, visit the Radio Museum (one of only two in the country) and take your coffee in Forlida´s coffee shop which dates back to 1785. Lafkos is full of centuries old and well preserved two-storey mansions.

6. Tríkeri
Trikeri offers something different. Located on the far edge of the peninsula, it is essentially the cape of Mount Pelion and enjoys a 360 degree view. It is a village with vibrant local character. Few minutes off the cape there is the tiny island of Paleó (old) Tríkeri, with only 20 inhabitants in winter!

7. Ágios Lavrentios
Agios Lavrentios is known both as the medieval village (because it was built in the 11th century) and the music village (due to the music festivities taking place there). There you will enjoy a maze-like system of alleys, perfectly preserved humble houses and three-storey mansions alike, the monastery of Saint Laurence dating to 1378 and the absolute absence of cars. Cars are parked outside the village and are forbidden inside.

8. Kissós
Kissos is built in one of the most verdant and lush regions of Pelion, to which it most likely owes its name [κισσός (kissós) = ivy]. With the village as your starting point, you can explore the beautiful nature of the mountain. The village is also loved for its hearty food and one of the most beautiful churches in the mountain, and a cafe that is often chosen by distinguished artists for small gigs. Rigas Feraios (1757 - 1798), one of the most influential visionaries of the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire, served in this village as a teacher, hence his monument in the stone-made square.

9. Pinakates
Pinakates is probably the best preserved settlement of Mount Pelion in terms of architecture. The village is so well preserved because until recently it was only accessible via one road which ends in the center of the village. All other roads could only be used on foot or by mule. In 1979 it became a category 1-protected landmark.

10. Chánia
Hánia or Chánia (not to be confused with Chaniá city in Crete) is ideally a winter destination but it is wonderful in autumn as well. It is built in a higher altitude (1200 m)  than any other settlement in the mountain and it is the closest to the ski resort. The village took its name from the many inns operating in the location for centuries. True to its name, there are still many hostels and taverns with traditional hearty food to try.

*For some reason, Wikipedia and other sources list 24 villages for Mount Pelion. I am no authority but I believe this to be false, because I have vacationed in places there that were not included in this list and are pretty touristy even. I don’t know what’s up with that (unless some are considered...suburbs of the villages idk)  but anyway Mount Pelion has 24 and / or more villages, each of them being at its prettiest in a different season. Some more honorable mentions for autumn are: Portaria, Vyzitsa, Zagora, Anakasia, Keramidi, Agios Georgios Nilias, Horto, Ano Lehonia.
This guide was inspired by these two articles in Greek:

The Sunday song
I decided to start posting one song from my country, Greece, along with some information for the piece I choose and why I think it’s an important song. The posts will be every Sunday.
In honour of the great poet/writer Manos Eleftheriou that passed away early this morning at 80 years old, we start with “Μαλαματένια Λόγια” (Malamaténia Logia/ translation: Very good words/ words from heart)
youtube
The song was released in 1974, after the restoration of democracy in Greece, following a 7 year dictatorship. The music is from Yannis Markopoulos and the first recording was with Lakis Halkias, Haralampos Garganourakis and Tania Tsanaklidou in vocals. The first recording was included in the album “Thiteia” from Yannis Makropoulos.
The song has become very famous in Greece and has had notable recordings from popular singers like Vasilis Papakonstantinou and Yannis Haroulis, who includes it in all his concerts.

Manos Eleftheriou wrote the lyrics during the 7-year dictatorship and they were censored. According to some, the song refers to the labour movement and narrates a period from the Nazi Occupation time (1941-1944) up to the dictatorship years (1967-1974). Some of the lyrics that were changed were:
«κι όχι να ζεις μ' αυτή τη συμμορία» -> «κομπανία» (original is gang, that refers to the military officers that made the coup on April 21st 1967, and became company)
«και ξημερώνοντας Παρασκευή» -> «μέρα κακή». ‘Friday’ was turned to ‘bad day’ because the coup happened on a Friday and a liberal member of the parliament, Grigoris Lamprakis, was also murdered by paramilitaries on a Friday.
The lyrics are also an indirect reference to the poetry of George Seferis, a Nobel awarded Greek poet. Most lyrics refer to the poem “Ελένη/Eleni”, and some also note references to “Επί Ασπαλάθων/Epi aspalathon”.
Yiannis Markopoylos had thought of the melody at the age of 13 when he was trying to write music for Christmas carols.
You can read a translation of the wonderful greek lyrics

Eurovision 1978 my top 20
Tumblr media
Hello, and welcome to another episode of my ESC top series, as we go now to April 22, 1978 when the 23rd edition was held in Paris, France after Marie Myriam’s win in London last year. 20 countries took part, Turkey and Denmark returned to the contest, and Denmark made their return after 12 years. Also this was the first contest hosted by two people and also we had the first nul point result with the current system, which I will tell you later who it was. Israel won the contest for the first time with Izhar Cohen & Alphabeta singing A-Ba-Ni-Bi. Ans now let’s review the songs.
1st Place: ISRAEL/Izhar Cohen & Alphabeta-Ah-Ba-Ni-Bi (Real Placing: 1st-157 points)
Oh this one is an excellent song, also Nurit Hirsh again conducts the orchestra here. The music is so disco and I love it, they sing so well and the song is very catchy, I can sing to it even I don’t understand Hebrew. IMO a deserved winner and one of the best songs Israel has sent to the contest.
2nd Place: LUXEMBOURG/Baccara-Parlez-vous français? (Real Placing: 7th-73 points)
Bonjour, je ne parlez français but this song is wonderful, they are such amazing singers and the performance is magical, the song is very disco and, even this isn’t as good as Yes sir, I can boogie, this has it’s own charm and certainly stood out in quite a dull year. OLÉ BACCARA.
3rd Place: GERMANY/Ireen Sheer-Feuer (Real Placing: 6th-84 points)
Before Eleni’s Fuego, there’s Ireen with Feuer, and... I’M SO IN LOVE WITH THIS ONE, the music is crazy and amazing, she’s a wonderful singer and this is miles better than her 1974 song. What a strong song and entry, certainly deserved better in 1978.
4th Place: BELGIUM/Jean Vallée-L’amour ça fait chanter la vie (Real Placing: 2nd-125 points)
Awww this is so charming!! I think it’s better than his 1970 song. His voice is full of feelings and I’m in love with the music. At first I thought this was quite boring but I started liking it after many listens, so magical and I think it’s a deserved runner up, but there are 3 songs I like more.
5th Place: MONACO/Caline & Olivier Toussaint-Les jardins de Monaco (Real Placing: 4th-107 points)
Also this one is amazing, I love their voices and the music is brilliant, those violins are superb and the chorus is so catchy, certainly a deserved 4th place and this was the last top place for Monaco :(
6th Place: SWITZERLAND/Carole Vinci-Vivre (Real Placing: =9th-65 points)
The music on this one is very beautiful, and Carole’s voice is charming and strong for this song, this song is very nice and the orchestra makes this one wonderful.
7th Place: FINLAND/Seija Simola-Anna rakkaudelle tilaisuus (Real Placing: =18th-2 points)
Seija’s voice makes this song very special and powerful, this is such a cute ballad and the music is very lovely, the last part of the song is amazing and I’m in love with this particular one.
8th Place: IRELAND/Colm C.T. Wilkinson-Born to sing (Real Placing: 5th-86 points)
I absolutely love this entry, his voice is very strong and I can relate to the lyrics somehow, the music is so great and his energy on stage is contagious and what a performance he delivered that night.
9th Place: NORWAY/Jahn Teigen-Mil etter mil (Real Placing: 20th-0 points/last)
Our first nul pointer under the 12 points system, and what an undeserved one, I’m mad about this one, but I must admit that the studio version is miles better than the live version. Jahn’s performance is hilarious and makes me smile, what a song this one.
10th Place: FRANCE/Joël Prévost-Il y aura toujours des violons (Real Placing: 3rd-119 points)
This is lovely somehow, maybe a bit boring but the singer’s voice is perfect and the performance has such a French charm, such an enjoyable song and again, France delivers quality on this one.
11th Place: THE NETHERLANDS/Harmony-’T is OK (Real Placing: 13th-37 points)
I LIKE THIS ONE A LOT, this is very good, the music is perfect and their performance makes me so happy, but the clothes are a problem here. Anyway, a good little entry.
12th Place: DENMARK/Mabel-Boom Boom (Real Placing: 16th-13 points)
The music is so lovely and charming, this entry makes me happy and it’s so nice, I love their voices, they are appropriate for this song. I like it so much.
13th Place: SWEDEN/Björn Skifs-Det blir alltid värre framåt natten (Real Placing: 14th-26 points)
This is a nice song, his voice is so wonderful but I think this wasn’t the best choice for ESC, maybe Miss Decibel may have been a better choice. The music although is great.
14th Place: UNITED KINGDOM/Co-Co-The Bad old Days (Real Placing: 11th-61 points)
The music on the chorus is quite bad, or maybe was the orchestra but something sounded off, their voices are good and the song was good, but I think I like more other songs. Also, what’s with their clothes?
15th Place: ITALY/Ricchi e Poveri-Questo amore (Real Placing: 12th-53 points)
Their voices here sound awful, the song certainly was one of the best of the night but the performance was mediocre. The music is very good and the lyrics are nice though, also, I like more another song from them called Será porque te amo.
16th Place: SPAIN/José Vélez-Bailemos un vals (Real Placing: =9th-65 points)
I kinda like this one... but I hate so much the music and the lyrics aren’t so good, anyway his voice is good and his smile is contagious. Maybe the backing singers are the problem here.
17th Place: GREECE/Tania Tsanaklidou-Charlie Chaplin (Real Placing: 8th-66 points)
I have a problem with her voice and the music isn’t very good either, not one of Greece’s best entries IMO, but certainly stands in a quite weak year.
18th Place: AUSTRIA/Springtime-Mrs. Caroline Robinson (Real Placing: 15th-14 points)
The music on this one makes me feel so bored, but their voices are good. The song overall is average but far from bad.
19th Place: TURKEY/Nilüfer & Nazar-Sevince (Real Placing: =18th-2 points)
This one is forgettable and the voices of the female singers are annoying in the chorus, also the music is quite bad.
20th Place: PORTUGAL/Gemini-Dai li dou (Real Placing: 17th-5 points)
This song is so annoying and repetitive, I can’t stand this one. Certainly one of Portugal’s worst entries ever.

Eurovision 1978: My ranking
Ohhh, 1978... you are an exhausting year. This is one of the years were I’m inclined to agree with the winner by default, as it is one of the least dreary and boring songs of the night. Nothing this year is stellar, but nothing is one-star awful either. Most of it is total middle-of-the-road filler that does not leave any mark in your mind and just passes by unnoticed. 1978 has an average rating of 3.15 stars
