Steam vents and reflection at 大雪山旭岳 Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway by Daniel Poon Via Flickr: Steam vents and reflection on Sugatami Pond at 大雪山旭岳 Daisetsuzan Asahidake. Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園) in the center of Hokkaido is the largest national park in Japan, the size of 226,764 ha, and has been designed as the national park since 1934, and is the oldest national park in the Hokkaido along with Akan Mashu National Park (阿寒摩周国立公園). A mountain named Daisetsuzan does not exist, and the whole area including the mountains with over 2,000 m above sea level such as Mt. Asahidake (旭岳), the highest mountain in Hokkaido, Mt. Kurodake (黒岳), Mt. Aibestudake (愛別岳), Mt. Tomuraushi (トムラウシ山) is collectively called "Daisetsuzan", and those are called "A roof of the Hokkaido" ,too. Rare nature such as active volcanoes, Lare Columnar joints, a sea of trees and permafrost even in the Hokkaido can be seen. About 250 types of alpine plants grow naturally, and various forms of life such as brown bear, blakiston's fish owl, dolly varden and pine grosbeak inhabit here. By the way, A right notation is "Daisetsuzan", but local people often call "Taisetsuzan".

Asahikawa is the second biggest city in Hokkaido and takes approximately 1.5 hours by flight from Handa airport in Tokyo. Surrounded by various mountains including Taisetsuzan, the basin has a lot of rivers and a beautiful bridge colors the scene. The city has history and culture of being developed with the wisdom and devices; rich forest allowed them to developed furniture manufacturing, pulp and paper industry, and people here created architecture which is suitable for the northern province.
From June 21 to 25th, 2017, an international furniture competition “International Furniture Design Fair Asahikawa”, which is running over 30 years, was held in the city. A lot of designers and people concerned with furniture design from Japan, Europe, America, and Asia gathered this event and discussed about products, materials, and manufacturing methods. Even a chair can tell the reason why it attracts a lot of people ; there’s a technique to make a beautiful design into form, honesty to use a tree which has grown over decades, and the grandeur in the design.
When I visited the factory, I could see a part of life of craftsmen who make chairs and shelves. Facing with the woods and run them into a machine to make a form. No need to create too much of them. They don’t so overproduction, but create only what they need.
Manufacturing style of the city suggests a way of life.
