FAVOURITE PHOTOS OF 2023

… Hello! Before I present my favourite photos, here is a little about the fun end-of-year. This week begins a series of special days to celebrate the end of the year and the start of the new one. There is a Winter Solstice walk with my close friend, which is a long walk (with camera!) in nature to celebrate its goodness, recognize the end of the darkening season (which was nice) and the beginning of longer days (nice, but…), and be thankful for the goodnesses in our lives. I even got a new positive affirmation song lyric ready.

Then there is Cozy Day, again with my close friend, which is a day with a special, comforting, sighful meal, in between photographing, hopefully when snowing, and a stop at a bakery for an evening treat. It is sometime before NYD because it is a "moveable feast" depending on how lazy I am. Cozy Day was created long ago in a city far away, in the middle of the mainstream holidays that did not cater to my irreligiosity. Apart from any "holiday" meal out in Chinese restaurants and Jewish delis, I started this special day where I would go out photographing in the older neighbourhoods, amongst the fallen or falling snow, going to a joint for a specific meal, like latkes at the Main Deli, photographing some more, and finally stopping at a bakery or deli, like La Vieille Europe, to pick up a treat, like a boozy fruit cake or expensive piece of cheese. And in the evening, lying on the sofa, likely wrapped in a blanket, I would watch a cozy horror movie, tasting that treat. It is a one-day organized hygge.

Then, on New Year's Day there's First Light, which is having a good night rest and getting up very early to go experience the last twilight and witness the first sunrise of the year. Oh, and to photograph it all. Oh, and a delish diner breakfast. I started doing this many years ago in that far away French city. And here in Vancouver I was glad that my close friend Sharon had been doing the same and so I get to celebrate the first dawn with my photo amigos.

I am also trying to organize an evening outing in January, in midwinter, for some café or bistro treats in between photographing the lights and activities of the city at night. I will write about it later. So…

Here are my favourite photos of 2023. It was a pretty good year for photographing, including lots of urban outings, visiting new industrial spots, reacquainting myself with our Chinatown, and a wonderful trip to another Chinatown, big nature, and beaches on Vancouver Island.

I bet you already know, for me, practicing photography is truly important and meaningful. I try to make contemplative photographs. I spend a lot of time observing, thinking about where I am, engaging with the place, and self-reflecting.

I like these photos because the forms are nice, their relationships are curious, and the framing makes it all cool. Importantly, these photographs make me smile, wow me, surprise me, and impress me. I almost cannot believe I experienced these scenes and made these pics. But, I do, as I believe in my abilities, my curiosity, my creativity, my drive, and myself. And I bet if you reader also practice photography passionately you feel the same. Yay!

A Garneau-area condo building has been struggling with heating issues, leaving residents to find another place to stay as the complex was evacuated.

On Saturday, Strathcona House residents got notice that the building's boiler had failed and required a full shutdown. This meant that the entire tower would be without heat until repairs were completed.

"As there is no heat and no domestic water, the building is no longer deemed habitable," an evacuation notice to residents read. "All residents will need to make alternate arrangements for accommodations."

Several unit owners previously told CTV News Edmonton that the building's parking access door had broken in November, leaving the garage open to the elements. That caused heating issues, flooding, and frozen pipes.

Emma Lawczynski has called the building home for more than three years. Her landlord told her the news this past weekend that she would have to take what she needed and leave the building for the time being.

"They were going to have to flush out all the water so that the pipes wouldn't freeze," she told CTV News Edmonton.

She moved to Strathcona House to be close to the University of Alberta. Now she is staying with family in the west end.

"I am very lucky, I have family in the city," Lawczynski said. "But I now have a commute.

CTV News Edmonton observed a sign Monday posted to residents saying in part, "The boiler has been restarted and moderate heat has been restored."

According to provincial minimum housing standards, a building should have a minimum temperature of 22 degrees Celsius during winter.

The property management company has asked residents to hold on to any receipts for expenses associated with the evacuation. Staff will also be monitoring suites regularly to check for any water and add anti-freeze to drains.

There is no timeline for when residents will be allowed to stay in their suites. Lawczynski has had to pay out of pocket to kennel her cat.

"It's tough to have to worry about paying rent here but also bringing my groceries somewhere else," Lawczynski said. "I think all of us are frustrated."

David Eby promises swift and decisive action on homelessness as B.C. premier | CBC News

David Eby claims that under his leadership, the province would do everything possible to address the ongoing homelessness crisis that cities like Vancouver are experiencing.

Coordination between the province and the city has been lacking in some areas.

The remarks come as officials continue to clear the sidewalk of tents and structures.

Over safety concerns in the Downtown Eastside, the fire department ordered the immediate removal of tents and structures along East Hastings in July.

The dismantling of yet another tent encampment in the city has resulted in clashes between police and residents, as well as where displaced people should go.

Before entering politics, Eby worked on the issue of homelessness as a lawyer with the Pivot Legal Society and as the executive director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association.

He had been the attorney general since his election in the Vancouver-Point Grey riding in 2017 and the minister responsible for housing for the previous year and a half.

During his tenure as housing minister, Eby earned a reputation for barging into local city halls to protest stalled or stonewalled housing projects, sometimes coming into direct conflict with local leaders.

He gave up those portfolios last month when he announced he would run for the leadership of the B.C. NDP after John Horgan announced he would step down this fall after a successor was chosen.

So far, with only one other candidate standing against him, Eby appears to be on track to become the next premier before a general election in October 2024.

Quinn pressed Eby on the seemingly intractable problem of housing some of the most vulnerable people and the resulting encampments in a nearly 30-minute interview in Vancouver's Strathcona Park, once the site of a tent encampment.

Eby insisted that the problem could be solved if all levels of government, advocates, and community organizations worked together. He stated that there currently is a lack of coordination and that he would use his experience in the Downtown Eastside to bring people together.

Eby chastised the City of Vancouver for having complicated approval processes in place to build temporary modular or permanent housing that can be built quickly.

Stewart said this week that cities on their own can't do this," when it comes to housing people displaced from the East Hastings encampment, and he asked for more provincial and federal assistance.

Eby stated that as premier he will work to expedite the replacement of single-room occupancy housing in Vancouver, much of which is in poor condition and is one of the reasons why people prefer to live in encampments rather than SROs.

There were 6,680 open SRO rooms in 157 SRO buildings in 2019.

Eby is also pledged to do more as premier to implement health support for people who are ill, which can be a barrier to finding appropriate housing.

A couple of weeks ago, Ray and I did a little day trip into Strathcona Park here on Vancouver Island. It's been a long time since I've gone anywhere for photography! I managed a short 5 minute hike to Lupin Falls with Ray carrying my gear. It's one of my favourite spots in the park.
