Leaning towards my next big instrument purchase being a handpan drum whenever I have around $200 saved up. I've been neglecting myself of one these beauties for about 10 years now. 😩
OCTAfan's Obscure Obscure and Weird Musical Instruments Tournament Round 1 Part 5: Carillon VS steelpan
Essentially a tower of bells, the Carillon is probably the largest instrument in the lineup, being tied with the pipe organ. It is a percussion instrument that involves a keyboard... and at least 23 large bells that are casted in bronze. They are usually found in churches, but there's a mobile version, although that's still pretty large compared to most of the instruments in the tournament.
Hailing from the Caribbean, the steelpan is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, and is referred to as 'the only instrument invented in the 21st century.' It's basically a steel drum container that that is tuned and hit with mallets.
Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful
There are two widely recognized instruments that scream "Island Vacation" the most: The ukulele (which I've already done) and the steel drum (which I am doing right now). More accurately called the steelpan, the development of this instrument was started by Caribbean slaves bringing over African drums then morphed and changed as their overlords kept trying to outlaw things that could be drummed upon. This resulted in the pan we know today when people realized that hitting dented industrial oil drums made really cool sounds and said overlords just gave up. The result is an instrument with a lot of distinct warping metallic twang yet a lot of versatility in where it can be used and what music it could be used in. Regardless of this adaptability, it is undeniable the music of the islands just wouldn't be complete without these wonderful music makers. JAM OUT!!!
