Christopher Lee and Sotiria Bellou, the emblematic Greek rebetiko singer in the 80s.
Fun fact: Lee had met Bellou during his vacation in Greece in the late 80s. Lee described himself as a fan; he was a collector of her 50s recordings and he told her her voice reminded him of Billy Holiday. Naturally, Bellou took a liking to him. When a journalist visited her at her house for an interview, he was startled by a frame of Lee as Count Dracula hanging on the wall. This is how Bellou told him and we know about their encounter and mutual appreciation.
We all know Christopher Lee but here’s a song with the unique voice of Sotiria Bellou from 1951, so he definitely knew this song and probably loved it :)
youtube
This is rare footage from a live in 1972. The man with the mustache playing the bouzouki, Vassilis Tsitsanis, is also the composer of the song and extremely prominent in Greece’s music history.

This one is fairly short and sweet! I've had Himeko on the brain lately, so it's time for me to get to dance with the prettiest woman in the universe <3

Sotiria has never been much of a dancer. She’s not the most coordinated person in the universe, and she always feels like she looks dumb when she dances.
But today’s unusual. It’s not often that she goes on vacation, and she certainly hadn’t expected to come to Penacony for one. It seems only right that she let her guard down even if just a little bit on the planet of festivities, especially since this is a rare mission where she’s getting to spend some time off the Express with Himeko.
So when her girlfriend asked her for a dance, Sotiria couldn’t bring herself to say no.
She has to admit that she likes getting to dance with Himeko. Sotiria is the one leading, and it’s an interesting change of pace to be able to guide the Express’s navigator. They’re not doing any specific dance, but there's fun that comes with not following any set guidelines and Sotiria likes getting to twirl Himeko around, the skirt of her dress flaring around her.
And she always likes listening to music. That was part of her job back on her home planet— running one of the only operating radio stations was tiring work, but she does sometimes miss that. Just getting to spend some time with the woman she loves while dancing to a cheesy love song is refreshing, and Sotiria can feel herself relaxing as they go.
They know each other well. The two of them have been working together for well over a year now, and there’s a comfort that comes with the familiarity of it. So she knows that Himeko would trust her with anything, always being sure that Sotiria will be there to keep her safe.
She doesn’t need to ask before she guides Himeko down into a low dip, her arms positioned around her to make sure that she won’t fall. It draws a small, surprised noise from her, but Sotiria can tell it’s a pleased one.
Himeko smiles, raising her leg so that her knee brushes past Sotiria’s hip. It makes her more stable, and Sotiria has to admit that it’s distracting how pretty she looks staring up at her with her hair dangling down so low it nearly touches the floor.
Sotiria can’t resist leaning down to kiss Himeko. When she pulls away, they’re both grinning, always delighted by a chance to be close to each other like this.
“We should dance more often,” Himeko says with a teasing lilt to her voice as Sotiria guides her back up to a standing position again.
“This is a special occasion,” she replies, leading Himeko along in their dance. “Don’t expect it to happen in more than a dream.”
“I couldn’t even convince you to dance with me in our cabin?” Himeko asks.
Sotiria hums, stroking her hand down Himeko’s back. “Maybe you could convince me.”
“I like to think I can be very convincing.”
She can be. Sotiria knows that. She’d probably jump through any hoop that Himeko asked her to. The two of them have traveled the universe together, but Sotiria thinks the best thing she’s found among the stars will always be Himeko.
“Check in with me again when we’re back on the Express,” she says.

My God Netflix... take a fucking hint maybe. Let it rest, honestly, such projects are apparently not for you, it's okay.
Also, can I just add some screenshots from the Hercules thing because
Tumblr media
Okay, who watches this unironically and then unironically gives it a 3/5... come forth! I can't stop laughing it looks like bad porn

I will give Tarak and Saphirra the benefit of the doubt as apparently the movie has little to do with accuracy to mythology anyway. There are some scarce myths that Heracles had visited India with Dionysus but that’s nowhere in the plot. And I also doubt this is how the names were in Sanskrit but I don't know much about that.
Lucius is a Latin name, hope they din't give it to a Greek that was "contemporary" of Heracles, also hope they don't gave it to a Roman because there weren't Romans at the time of Heracles. But as I see in the wikipedia page that someone chose to make for this film, apparently, Heracles was sold to a gladiator slave promoter, who was Lucius, so I guess indeed according to Netflix Heracles / Hercules lived with Romans and more so at the time of their peak.
BUT all this is fine compared to SOTIRIS. Sotiris, a pal of Heracles. Sotiris is a Greek name all right and it has an ancient Greek origin indeed.... Soter or Sotir in the modern pronunciation is an epithet meaning "Saviour" and it was a way several gods were called i.e Zeus Soter. Then also some Hellenistic kings used it as an epithet, i.e Ptolemy I Soter. And finally, Jesus. The famous early crypto-Christian fish, if you know. Early Christians who did not want to be discovered and persecuted by pagan Romans and Greeks used as their secret symbol the fish, which in Greek is ΙΧΘΥΣ, and served as an acronym for Ἰησοῦς Χρῑστός Θεοῦ Υἱός Σωτήρ (Iēsûs Chrīstós, Theû Huiós, Sōtḗr - Jesus Christ, Son of God, the Saviour).
The problem is that from Soter the adjective Soterios was derived, meaning the same thing, and soon enough Sotirios (because the pronunciation was already half-modern at the time) was popularised after Jesus and Chirstianity as a first name for normal people that were getting baptised. Nowadays, girls are baptised as "Sotiria" (salvation, the noun, for them) and boys are baptised as "Sotirios" (the adjective) and almost always go with "Sotiris" for shorter.
In other words, they really went for "Hercules and Jack" or something.
This is the Thanos thing happening all over again.

It’s rare that Sotiria feels relaxed. She’s pretty sure there’s an anxiety disorder she has to blame for that, but admitting out loud that she has a problem has never been her strong suit.
Sitting in the parlor car of the Astral Express feels peaceful though. Even when the express isn’t moving there’s a subtle movement to the car. It’s barely noticeable unless you know what you’re looking for, but Sotiria’s been on the express for a while now. She knows the way it moves and shifts, how it’s never completely still.
Sotiria has never been one to get philosophical. She did a philosophy class back in college, and everyone in it was unbearably pretentious. But looking out on the universe, it’s hard not to think about her place in the grand scheme of existence.
She’s a long way from home, and that’s a good thing. Sotiria had grown up looking at the stars from a telescope. The thought of one day getting to actually be amongst them was unimaginable, though, more a fantasy that she’d hold to help go to sleep than something she thought was actually possible.
Sotiria has come a long way. She’s gotten to help a lot of people too. That’s part of being with the Nameless. And it’s never what she would have expected she’d be doing, but it’s exciting. She gets to see more than she ever would have at home, do more than she ever would have been able to while working in some office.
Everything looks so small from here. Ships and planets are like specks hidden throughout the cosmos. Sotiria knows that even being part of the Nameless, she’s just as small as everything else. But for once the thought of being small doesn’t seem like a bad thing. There are so many beautiful, amazing small things out there. To count herself among them is an honor.
“What are you thinking about?”
Himeko’s voice draws Sotiria out of her thoughts.
Sotiria hopes that Himeko hasn’t been here long. She’s not very good at this relationship thing— she never had much experience with romance. But she’s pretty sure that ignoring her girlfriend for minutes as she stares out literally into space wouldn’t be very positively received.
“I don’t know. I guess just what we’re doing,” Sotiria admits.
“Hmm.” Himeko comes to stand next to Sotiria, looking out to the stars herself. “I do that sometimes too. It’s easy to let your mind wander when you’re looking out into the stars.”
Sotiria nods. There’s something about the vastness of space that makes it easier to get lost in your thoughts. It’s somehow both dark and light, with rich dark blues and purples melding together, dotted with bright bits of stars and distant planets.
“It’s beautiful,” Sotiria says. She glances at Himeko out of the corner of her eyes. She’s pretty sure this is when she’s supposed to flirt. “And, uh, so are you.”
Himeko laughs, covering her mouth with one hand. Sotiria thinks she’s adorable when she does that, the corners of her eyes crinkling.
“So are you,” Himeko says. She brushes her hand against Sotiria’s. “If you’d like I could get us some coffee?”
Sotiria is pretty sure that she’s in love with Himeko. She’s not quite ready to verbalize it, but that’s the only way she can think to describe the feelings she has for her.
What she doesn’t love is Himeko’s coffee. As much as she loves making it— and Sotiria does usually love coffee— there’s always something that’s off about it. She’s heard it described as being brown sludge before, and while she doesn’t think it’s that bad, it certainly isn’t good either.
“I appreciate the offer but I think I’ll pass for now,” Sotiria says. She has a better stomach for Himeko’s coffee than most, but even she has her limits.
“If you say so,” Himeko replies.
“But thanks,” Sotiria says. One day she’ll have to tell Himeko the truth about how awful her coffee is to anyone with a decent palate, but that won’t be today.
“You could thank me in another way,” Himeko says, a teasing lilt to her voice and sparkle in her eyes.
Sotiria knows exactly what she’s suggesting. “Alright, princess.”
She has to lean forward a little to get to Himeko, placing a soft kiss on her lips. It’s short but sweet. Another quick reminder that even in all the smallness of the universe, there can be beautiful, wonderful things.
Himeko smiles, wrapping her arms loosely around Sotiria’s waist. “That was a very good thank you.”
“Well, you deserve nothing but the best,” Sotiria states, and she can’t help but smile too. Himeko tends to have that effect on her.
“You can be quite the sweet talker,” Himeko comments.
Sotiria rolls her eyes. “You’re the only person who would ever think that.”
“Hmm. Maybe I’m just special.”
Himeko is special to Sotiria, far more than she knows. Words have never come easily to her, and while she does her best to show Himeko just how much she cares, it never feels like quite enough. Words have never been her strong suit.
So instead Sotiria tries to show Himeko she cares through the little things. Because if there’s one thing that she’s learned from her time on the express, it’s that even the smallest things can have an impact.
