What the KCIA and the Moonies did to the Editor of the Korea Journal, Song Sun Keun
Tumblr media
▲ Pictured: Song Sun-Keun pictured in the December 10, 1976 issue of the San Francisco Examiner
Mr. SONG: I would like to begin with a KCIA attempt to disrupt the speech engagement of Mr. Kim Dae Jung in San Francisco in May 1973 that was foiled; a KCIA-Moon Sun Myung connection through the Korean-American Political Association as early as 1970; and an assassination plot against me.
On May 18, 1973, Mr. Kim Dae Jung, sponsored by a group of Korean-American political science scholars, was to speak at the International Student Center in San Francisco. I understand you are going to question me about this, so I won't go into detail.
Mr. FRASER: Were you going to skip part of your statement?
Mr. SONG: Do you want me to read it?
Mr. FRASER: You might go through your whole statement. It might save some questions.
Mr. Young Shik Bae, a KCIA agent who also acted as vice consul at the Korean consulate general in Los Angeles, showed up with an entourage of more than 10 hoodlums from Los Angeles. Joining Vice Consul Bae were Mr. Dong Jim Kim, consul of the Korean consulate general in San Francisco and a certain Mr. Min Hi Rhee, a well-known karate instructor in the San Francisco area, and several of his karate students. Their tactic to disrupt Mr. Kim's speech was at once all too obvious to the entire audience.
As Mr. Kim began his speech, these hoodlums started to interrupt and harass the speaker. There was a commotion, shouting, and making ugly gestures and all. And they brought with them several bottles of tomato ketchup, dozens of raw eggs, and a movie camera.
The timely arrival of the San Francisco police, which resulted in removing Mr. Min Hi Rhee, saved the meeting from pandemonium. I was an eyewitness to the scene and duly reported the incident in my Korean language biweekly called the Korea Journal. Here I would like to submit the article with photos and its English translation.
Mr. FRASER: Thank you. We will make that a part of your testimony.
Mr. SONG: What surprised me was the fact that Vice Consul Bae Young Shik led this outrage openly. Furthermore, although I didn't realize at the time but later came to learn, Mr. Yang Doo Won, alias Sang Ho Lee, Minister at the Korean Embassy in Washington, D.C., who was also KCIA station chief in the United States, came to San Francisco and stayed at the Hilton Hotel, where Mr. Kim Dae Jung was staying and was the prime mover who directed that fiasco behind the scenes.
Second, I have heard that in 1970, Mr. Sang Ik Choi, a representative of Moon Sung Myung's Unification Church in the San Francisco area, received $25,000 from the Unification Church and set out to organize a Korean-American political group. Thus, the Korean-American Political Association (KAPA) was chartered in the State of California as a nonprofit corporation, and Choi set himself up as its president. Mr. Doo Whan Kim, while consul at the Korean consulate general in San Francisco, became the de facto vice president of KAPA.
The express purpose of this organization was to exert its influence on American politics, local as well as national. To date, KAPA is known to have contributed $5,000 to Gov. Jerry Brown during his 1974 gubernatorial campaign and $1,000 to Mayor Mosconi of San Francisco during his mayoral campaign in 1976.
However, I would like to point out to you that this nonprofit U.S. corporation had an official of a foreign government as a key officer, and in addition was receiving financial support from Moon's Unification Church as early as 1970. When Mr. Sang Ik Choi was promoted to the position of fundraising manager of the Unification Church of New York, Consul Doo Whan Kim succeeded him as KAPA's president after resigning his post at the Korean consulate general.
I gained my knowledge of KAPA while serving as a consultant to the San Francisco chapter of KAPA. I have supplied the subcommittee staff with copies of several KAPA documents, concerning the relationship between KAPA and the KCIA.
Third, in May of 1973, I began publishing a local Korean language biweekly, the Korea Journal, and also was its editor-reporter. As the paper started to criticize various overt activities of the KCIA in the United States and the Park Chung Hee regime, a businessman who is a former KCIA agent approached me and indicated that he would help the Korea Journal to expand if its coverage were confined to local matters—in his words, if it became a "pleasant community bulletin board." I declined the offer.
Then I received a substantial offer to purchase the Korea Journal. This offer came to me indirectly through close acquaintances of my family. I told them the paper was not for sale. At the time, I was having considerable financial difficulty. I was approached for the third time again through some close friends with an offer to engage in profitable trade with Korea. It was all too obvious to me that such offers were made to divert my attention and activities away from my critical stand on Korean politics. I refused.
On separate occasions, two old friends of my father, Mr. Il Kwon Chung, the Speaker of the Korean National Assembly, and Mr. Han Lim Lee, the Minister of Construction, sought out my father and tried to persuade him to change his views on the Park regime. My father is a Methodist minister, whose views on the Park regime could not be changed by these visitors.
After all these "friendly" attempts and offers were turned down, I began to receive telephone calls threatening my life. I reported these telephone calls to the local police and wrote about them in the Korea Journal. I would like to submit a 1974 San Francisco Examiner article for your reference.
The threatening calls backfired because I became more vocal than ever. Then Mr. Man Sung Limb, a KCIA agent at the Korean consulate general in San Francisco, came up with a plot to assassinate me. In order to save time, I would like to submit for your files copies of articles which appeared in the San Francisco Examiner, Los Angeles Times, Berkeley Barb, and the San Mateo Times that covered this plot. I am also submitting a tape recording and its transcript in translation of a personal interview with one of the witnesses who was present at the time Consul Limb discussed this plot.
Needless to say, such KCIA harassment and threats would be illegal acts in this country even if I were not a U.S. citizen, and these acts should be duly condemned.

2019 (55th) BaekSang Arts Awards - May 1, 2019
Best Actor (Lee Byung-Hun)
Secret Garden, Descendants of The Sun, Goblin, The King: Eternal Monarch gibi dizilere imza atmış.
Gong-Mae, Ae Shin’i küçüklüğünden hatırlamaktadır.
Go Ae-Shin aslında asil bir aileden gelmektedir. Lee Jung-Eun’a ekstra bayılırım. Aklınıza gelebilecek bütün güzel dizilerde kendisine denk gelebilirsiniz. Oh My Ghost , Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo, Fight for My Way, Familiar Wife,  When the Camellia Blooms , Law School, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Soundtrack 1, Our Blues… diye oldukça uzun devam edebilirim. Ayrıca burada parantez açıyorum. Go Ae-Shin ailesi kalp kalp kalp. Babası Go Sang-Wan(Jin Goo), annesi ise Kim Hui-Jin(Kim Ji-Won)’dur. Bu çiftimiz “Descendants of the sun” dizisinde severek izlediğimiz ikinci çiftti.
Sahne durup müzik girdiği an, ekrandaki görsel şölen inanılmazdı. Her biri screenshot alınıp üzerine saatlerce konuşulabilir anlamlar içeriyordu. Aynı zamanda tablo gibiydiler. Duvarına assan sanat eseri olmadığını kimse söyleyemez. Sinematografisi enfesti.
Her birini alkışlıyorum.

Choi Woo-sik, Song Kang-ho, Jang Hye-jin, and Park So-dam in Parasite (Bong Joon-ho, 2019) Cast: Song Kang-ho, Choi Woo-sik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, Lee Sun-kyun, Jo Yeo-jeong, Jung Ji-so, Jung Hyun-jun, Lee Jeong-eun, Park Myeong-hoon, Park Keun-rok. Screenplay: Boon Jong-ho, Han Jin-won. Cinematography: Hong Kyung-pyo. Production design: Lee Ha-jun. Film editing: Yang Jin-mo. Music: Jung Jae-il. Comedy that turns violent seldom works. I'm thinking in particular of my recent viewing of Peter Medak's The Ruling Class (1972), which goes abruptly from a giddy satire of upperclass manners into a dark tale about homicidal mania, losing the audience's assent to its original vision. So why does Parasite, which takes a similar turn, work so well that it won over international audiences and walked off with three of the most prestigious Oscars, for picture, director, and screenplay? It's a story of how the Kim family, eking out a living in a sub-basement, conned their way into the household of the wealthy Park family, who live in a classy house designed by a famous architect, but are then undone by a secret built into the house itself. I think it works because Bong Joon-ho's vision is dark from the start, but his touch is light, making us appreciate what drives the Kims -- poverty and class resentment -- and what makes the Parks so vulnerable -- snobbery and vanity. Both families need a comeuppance, the Kims for their lack of scruples, the Parks for their sense of entitlement. Maybe the comeuppance is overkill, but Bong has kept his characters at a slight distance throughout the film, so that we don't feel the shock of loss when they meet their fates. The ambivalence we may feel about them is summed up in the title: Parasite could refer to either family, the Kims who exploit the Parks, the Parks who ride the crest of societal privilege unaware that their good fortune is built on the misery of others.

Moon Embracing the Sun. 6-7
Story: 7
Acting: 8
Chemistry: 8
At first the story was a little slow paced for me. I loved the acting from the younger actors and how they started setting up the story, but honestly i’ll admit, it did get long winded with six episodes before the time jump happens. Even if I did prefer the younger leads actress’s direction more then the adult actress’s version. (I’m sorry, but Han Ga In portayal for her character only had one look throughout the whole drama) 🤷‍♀️ I also wasn’t feeling the chemistry between the adult main leads either. Kim Soo Hyun played his part phenomenally, but I felt like when the two were together it was just ‘eh’. Once the main storyline did start lifting off midway around episode 10, my interest spike up slightly more then plummeted back down as the plot got spewed all around. I understand its a great love story that supposed to tell how a deep love can stand against politics, fate, and one’s own destiny, but it was poorly executed. I will give a big plus to the cinematography which was strikingly beautiful. Now before I get huge flames for this, I know this is a huge favorite amongst a lot of fans. No It’s not my mine, but I did enjoy bits of it here and there. I probably would recommend to try to watch it at least once for your own opinion and if by episode 8 or 9 your not feeling it yet, then I would say skip it.

Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" is a masterpiece of cinematic precision and control with such assured direction, brilliant writing, and staggering performances, that it works like a Swiss watch on steroids and might well be the best film of the year. Here's my full review!

My thoughts on... Hotel del Luna
Tumblr media
From left to right: Pyo Ji-hoon as Ji Hyun-joong; Yeo Jin-goo as Gu Chan-sung; Lee Ji-eun (IU) as Jang Man-wol; Bae Hae-seon as Choi Seo-hee; and Shin Jung-keun as Kim Sun-bi.
Released in 2019, Hotel del Luna was my introduction to the works of the Hong sisters as well as actors Yeo Jin-goo and Lee Ji-eun (IU), and what an introduction it was! The first episode of the show was excellent, giving us a hint of Man-wol’s tragic past that left me wanting to know more, then moving forwards in time to reenact that scene from Beauty and the Beast where Belle’s father is caught trying to steal a rose from Beast’s garden to give to Belle, and finally reaching present day as Man-wol tries to recruit Chan-sung and introduces him, and us, to this world of gods, ghosts, and souls with lingering grudges, that reminded me of the wondrous world of Harry Potter. Everything clicked for me in this episode, from the beautiful cinematography and music to the strong performances, particularly IU’s as Man-wol who knocked it out of the park and, incidentally, has a most impressive wardrobe and an uncanny ability to look amazing in every single one of her outfits. This was a highly promising start for my next modern fantasy show after Goblin and I couldn’t wait for the next episode. But what is this show about and why should you watch it?
Plot synopsis
Tumblr media
21 years ago, Gu Chang-sung’s father cut a deal with the beautiful and mysterious owner of Hotel del Luna, Jang Man-wol, so that she would save his life in exchange for his son. Regretting the deal afterwards, the father left the country with his son hoping to spare him his fate. Believing himself to be safe, Gu Chan-sung has returned to work as assistant manager in one of Korea’s top hotels but Jang Man-wol is intent on collecting on the old debt by having him work in her hotel instead. However, Hotel del Luna is not your typical establishment, as Gu Chan-sung soon finds out, providing a service for souls who need healing or have grudges left to settle before moving on. While initially afraid of the prospect of becoming assistant manager at a hotel that serves ghosts, Gu Chan-sung finds himself intrigued by the challenge and curious about the story of the beautiful owner who runs it.
A magical atmosphere
Tumblr media
Stepping into the world of Hotel del Luna feels like taking the train at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters and attending Hogwarts. In fact, our intrepid hero, Gu Chan-sung, also receives a magical letter welcoming him as Hotel del Luna’s new manager, and while there’s nothing magical about the subway that takes him there Jang Man-wol does use a little magic to ensure their first encounter goes undisturbed. The hotel itself reminded me of Hogwarts, not because it is filled with ghosts and can only be found by them (and the very much alive and fearful human manager), but because of the feeling of perpetual wonder knowing that behind every door lies a new magical mystery waiting to be discovered, be it a room only people who are alive can enter but not exit, the sky lounge, a swimming pool that is actually a beach in some undetermined plane of existence, or a beautiful garden with a magical tree that holds one of the hotel’s biggest secrets. Of course, one should not forget CEO Jang Man-wol (if one wishes to live) who, while certainly a very different character from Albus Dumbledore in terms of personality, always knows more than she’s letting on and is usually in control of any situation, even if the outcome isn’t always the one she anticipates. There is also the wonderful supporting cast in the form of the different incarnations of the deity Ma Go-sin (played by Seo Yi-sook, who looks like she’s having a blast playing the different sides of the goddess), a reserved but diligent Grim Reaper (played by Kang Hong-suk), and the welcoming staff of the hotel, represented by the trio of Kim Sum-bi (the bartender), Choi Seo-hee (the room manager), and Ji Hyun-joong (the hotel receptionist).

In the same way we cannot divorce Harry Potter from its music, given its distinct signature by that legend that is John Williams, I cannot forego mentioning Hotel del Luna’s mysterious, magical, and ethereal, instrumental soundtrack. Let me take you on a brief musical tour, shall I? Let’s start by taking subway line 4 and going to Hotel del Luna. The receptionist seems to be asleep so why don’t we let ourselves in? Wow, looks like the hotel’s throwing a party, apparently they’re welcoming human guests for the first time in years and the staff is particularly excited about it. That explains how we managed to get in (remember, this is not really a hotel for living, breathing, people). I can see that the bartender is busy receiving food orders and members of the staff are decorating the hall with real flowers. Hey, where’s that kid sneaking off to? Let’s follow him. Oh, that’s the Samdocheon Tunnel, which marks the boundary between this life and the afterlife. The Grim Reaper and the manager are there to bid farewell to one of the hotel’s guests. Apparently, there’s a bridge beyond the tunnel that takes 49 days to cross! I’m not eager to cross it just yet so let’s return to the hotel. Wait, why is there water everywhere? Looks like a water god managed to get past the receptionist (not that difficult when he’s asleep) and the CEO isn’t very happy about it. Yup, she definitely doesn’t look happy. We’d better make our exit before she figures out we shouldn’t be here.
Tumblr media
To complement this excellent instrumental soundtrack, my favourite among all the kdramas I’ve watched to date, there’s an amazing selection of songs by artists like Red Velvet, TAEYEON, Heize, Punch, Chung Ha, and Paul Kim, among many others. IU herself sings an absolutely beautiful song that plays in one of the most highly-anticipated scenes of the show but which, sadly, has not been released. However, just as important as having a great soundtrack is using it well. If you’ve read my reviews of Angel’s Last Mission: Love or Strong Woman Do-Bong Soon, you should have an idea of how much I value using the right music at the right time to convey or accentuate the proper emotions during dramatic, comedic, or romantic scenes. Correct music usage can lead to your soundtrack being memorable, whereas incorrect music usage will surely render it forgettable. Fortunately for us, Hotel del Luna knows precisely when to use its music and how. It knows when levity is called for and when it’s not, when to highlight the wondrous side of magic and when to show its darker side, when to use Heize’s “Can You See My Heart” or Punch’s “Done For Me.” I believe it was John Williams, when talking about the music of the original Star Wars trilogy, who said that he wanted the score to tell the story of what was going on in the screen. I believe Hotel del Luna’s score achieves this feat.
Tumblr media
Another aspect that contributes to the magical atmosphere of the show is, without a doubt, its incredible cinematography (from camera angles, through its beautiful use of lighting and colours) which, combined with its excellent score, can create scenes that are best defined as poetry in motion. I particularly liked how it favoured studio sets for shooting many of its scenes, giving the sensation that we’re watching a superb play that encourages us to send our imagination into overdrive. Even some of the more noticeable VFX work, like the city view from the hotel’s sky lounge plays into the notion that one cannot always tell what’s real and what’s fake in Hotel del Luna, as Man-wol warns Chan-sung that the view from the sky lounge is not from this world, but the fall will kill him just the same (Man-wol being Man-wol). Because I’m not knowledgeable enough to explain the show’s cinematography in technical terms, I’ll leave you with a trailer that captures some aspects of it and, luckily, also showcases Jang Man-wol’s incredible selection of dresses.

A part of a greater whole
In my review of Bring it on, Ghost I mentioned the show followed a certain formula that is often poorly executed in Western shows. There is a main story-arc that encompasses the whole of the show and there are side stories where our protagonists confront the “ghost of the week.” One of the strengths of Bring it on, Ghost lied in how these side stories would sometimes tie into the main story or would be used to expand on a character’s backstory so that they rarely came across as filler. Hotel del Luna executes the same formula with a lot more thought and care, often laying out the groundwork for events later down the episode, what is expected, or even later down the show, what is a bit more impressive. The Hong sisters remain true to their initially-stated intention throughout the show and reinforce this with the aid of these side stories, preparing both Gu Chan-sung and us for the inevitable dénouement of the show. Let me try to illustrate my point by way of an example. I don’t want to give more for fear of completely spoiling the show for you.
Tumblr media
Episode 5 tells the story of a ghost bride whose parents want to give a soul wedding so she will be able to peacefully pass into the afterlife. Unfortunately, the chosen partner for this soul wedding ends up being Gu Chan-sung’s best friend, Sanchez, so while Man-wol goes shopping as Audrey Hepburn with the parents’ black card (our girl has very expensive tastes), Gu Chan-sung tries to figure out a way to spare his terrified friend. After some twists and turns, what is often the case with this show as the truth is not always what it seems, it is revealed that it is actually the groom’s parents who want to marry off the bride so she’ll let go of their son, who’s in a coma. For those who’ve watched Bring it on, Ghost, the parallels with the ghost side story from Episode 10 are fairly evident, as the ghost bride needs to find the strength to let go of the person she loves and she ultimately does so in one of the most beautifully composed scenes of the show. This is one of those “poetry in motion” scenes I was talking about. As the groom runs away in shock and fear, the bride gathers the courage to cut the red string of fate tying them together, under the intent gazes of Gu Chan-sung, dressed as the groom, and Jan Man-wol, dressed as a bride (in red).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You need a stronger will to let go than to hold on.
This scene is a portent of events yet to come, when the day finally arrives where Chan-sung and Man-wol will also have to part ways. Indeed, several episodes later, the room manager will remind Gu Chan-sung of the words Goddess Ma Go-sin then told the ghost bride, “You need a stronger will to let go than to hold on.” The bride’s selfless act of letting go of the person she loves, breaking free from her earthly tether of her own volition, can be seen as a challenge to Man-wol, whose hatred for the man who betrayed her has been her sole drive for the past 1,300 years but also a curse that has bounded her to the hotel and prevented her from dying. Could she, like the bride, unburden herself by letting go of her hatred? Is it possible for someone with such a long and deep resentment to simply let go? This is a recurring question throughout the show and one that puts her at odds with her increasing desire to protect Gu Chan-sung, as she fears her actions, born of her hatred for the people who wronged her, might end up harming the man she loves.
Side stories such as this one often give us further insight into Man-wol, whether it be a glimpse of her past or challenging her beliefs, making her question herself and her actions, however briefly.
A fairy tale romance
Tumblr media
Man-wol is a tsundere character, both a Beauty and a Beast, who has been nursing a thousand-year-old grudge against the people who betrayed her and consequently filters every human interaction through a lens of cold cynicism, expecting the worst from people. Chan-sung on the other hand, is a proper gentleman, a type of character we don’t often see in kdramas and a natural consequence of his training as a hotel manager. He’s friendly, cultured, well-mannered, kind, clever, and someone who's very much in control of his emotions most of the time. The evolution of the relationship between these two characters is the centrepiece of Hotel del Luna, a breath of fresh air in a landscape that often feels the need to use love triangles, or other polygons, as a shortcut to properly fleshing out the relationship between two characters. While there are elements of a love triangle present, such as expressions of jealousy for the sake of comedy, Hotel del Luna chooses to forego this trope and commit fully to the main characters’ fairy tale-like romance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When you tell her you’ve been dreaming about her.
Another trope the Hong sisters mostly dispense with is that of misunderstandings, which are kept to a bare minimum, as Man-wol and Chan-sung are very open with each other regarding their thoughts and feelings, although Man-wol is, understandably, less transparent about her feelings in the beginning. It was incredibly refreshing to witness two characters that could guess each other’s thoughts and were willing to have an open and honest conversation about it rather than to hold back for the sake of drama. Of course, this did become somewhat frustrating for Man-wol (and fun for us) when Chan-sung started gaining more confidence, feeling at ease with Man-wol, and rebuking her selfish or materialistic actions. Their playful banter and bickering throughout the show is, to my mind, a clear indication that they’re comfortable with each other, as strong a sign of the chemistry in their relationship as half a dozen kisses, if not a better one, what is a good thing because those are few and far between. On the other hand, it makes those moments much more valuable and meaningful. The love between Man-wol and Chan-sung comes across in the gestures they make, in their facial expressions, in the words spoken and left unsaid. When Man-wol tries to comfort Chan-sung but doesn’t know how (Video), when she confesses she wants him to stay with her till the end and they share an intimate hug (Video), when Chan-sung breaks down and cries at the thought of not being able to see Man-wol ever again (Video), when the two have a conversation on the balcony under the moonlight (Video)... These are a precious few examples of the beauty, strength, and depth of feeling, of their relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the adult catches you in a lie.
While Man-wol is not the same ruthless person she was at the beginning of the show as she is at the end, she still retains some elements or traits of her personality throughout the show (there’s still a little tsun in her dere), as it should be. In one episode Chan-sung is remarking upon how much nicer she has become and she replies, “Gu Chan-sung, you’ve made leaves and flowers grow and have changed me a lot. But you won’t be able to change my core personality. Don’t even expect that.” Even as she says this you can see her looking a little uneasy about something, a little girl about to be caught in a lie by the adult who’s trying to keep her out of trouble. It is thanks to Gu Chan-sung’s patient and enduring love, that protected her from the worst aspects of her own self, that Man-wol is able to let go of her anger, both literally and metaphorically. But Man-wol also deserves praise, as she reciprocates Chan-sung’s love and equally tries to protect him from the dangers of this new world he has entered but most of all from herself, to the point she is willing to renounce her revenge and extinguish her existence to ensure she can never harm the man she loves.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
It should be evident by now that I absolutely love this show and it is, without a doubt, my favourite out of all I’ve watched thus far, including Goblin. This is not to say the show is without flaws. Its almost single-minded focus on the story of Man-wol and Chan-sung has some collateral damage, most notably in the form of a character’s loved one, an event used as a means to highlight the pain experienced by those left behind, anticipating the day when our main protagonists will be forced to part ways. In another case, a poignant encounter for Chan-sung is not properly fleshed out, perhaps intentionally so but it seems like a wasted opportunity. Additionally, the introduction and development of the secondary villain’s arc (Man-wol is both the love interest and the main antagonist) felt a little weak, but is still a functional plot device that leads to some of the show’s best scenes. Finally, there is also the way the Hong sisters handled the riddle of Chan-sung’s dreams, which I may address in a separate post because it has too many spoilers.
If you’re a fan of fantasy dramas like Goblin, there’s simply no reason for me not to recommend this show and, hopefully, I’ve given you a few to persuade you as to why this is such a standout drama and, to my mind, the Hong sisters’ best work to date. It’s even on r/KDRAMA’s banner as one of those must-watch shows. If you do decide to watch it, I advise you to pace yourself so you don’t have to say goodbye to Hotel del Luna’s wonderful family too soon.

WHY PEOPLE ARE BUZZING ABOUT STRANGER S2 : INTENSE INTRIGUE + EVERYONE IS A SUSPECT
Can you find the culprit?
Tumblr media
All the puzzle pieces in the crime series Stranger S2 are coming together as our favorite crime-solving duo team up to find missing Prosecutor Seo Dong-jae (Lee Joon-hyuk). While Prosecutor Hwang Si-mok (Cho Seung-woo) and Police Inspector Han Yeo-jin (Bae Doo-na) retrace Dong-jae’s steps, they discover that cases brought up earlier appear to be related to his disappearance. What makes the series so interesting is the brain-racking mystery and how suspicious all the characters are. Enjoy sleuthing alongside the duo and check out the possible culprits here.
Choi Bit
Tumblr media
Most of the primary suspects are new characters in the second season, including Chief Choi (Jeon Hye-jin). Choi Bit has no qualms about bending the truth for the good of the police. She can be hot-headed and calculative. Prior to Seo Dong-jae’s disappearance, Choi Bit was concerned about him prying into the case of Police Sergeant Song Gi-hyeon (Lee Ga-sub)’s death. Now she’s worried about the public thinking that a police officer might be behind Dong-jae’s kidnapping. She’s clearly nervous and has something to hide, but could she be responsible for Dong-jae?
Woo Tae-ha
Tumblr media
Both Choi Bit and Chief Prosecutor Woo Tae-ha (Choi Moo-sung) seem bothered about the fact that Seo Dong-jae was looking into the death of prosecutor turned lawyer Park Gwang-su (Seo Jin-won) before his abduction. However, Woo Tae-ha might be experiencing more difficulty in trying to appear nonchalant. He’s on edge and doesn’t want Hwang Si-mok to dig too deep. Tae-ha already lied about the other file Dong-jae gave him and spoke to Park Gwang-su’s wife secretly. Could he be involved in Dong-jae’s abduction?
Lee Yeon-jae
Tumblr media
Lee Yeon-jae (Yoon Se-a) is now in charge of Hanjo and embroiled in a power struggle with her brother Lee Sung-jae. She’s determined to keep her position and continue rebuilding Hanjo’s reputation. Could she be entangled in some dirty dealings though? When Dong-jae brought up Park Gwang-su’s death she jokingly asked if she had killed him. Furthermore, before Dong-jae’s disappearance Yeon-jae cryptically says, “There was one more,” after receiving a supportive text message from Dong-jae. However, Yeon-jae may not be directly involved in his disappearance because she does appear to be worried about him.
Kim Sa-hyun
Tumblr media
Prosecutor Kim Sa-hyun (Kim Young-jae) joined Woo Tae-ha and Hwang Si-mok to represent the prosecution for the Prosecution-Police Council Meeting. He comes off a bit arrogant and annoying at first, but he seems different after Dong-jae’s disappearance. Sa-hyun has a bit of a heart-to-heart with Si-mok when he talks about having known the late Lee Chang-jun (Yu Jae-myeong) and being affected by his passing even though he had not seen him for 13 years. He also notes that if a police officer is responsible for Dong-jae’s kidnapping then the investigative authority fight between the police and the prosecution is over. Sa-hyun seems harmless, but you never know what could happen in this series.
Kang Won-chul
Tumblr media
Chief Prosecutor Kang Won-chul (Park Seong-keun) quickly signed off on the ruling for the Tongyeong drowning case which wrapped it up in a short amount of time. While Si-mok didn’t disagree with the ruling, there are some signs that show Won-chul might have changed since the first season. He’s in a higher position of power than before, and his meeting with prosecutor turned lawyer Oh Ju-seon (Kim Hak-sun) reveals that Won-chul might be considering what to do with his career after leaving the prosecution someday. Is Kang Won-chul still trustworthy?
Lee Sung-jae
Tumblr media
We have yet to see Lee Yeon-jae’s brother Lee Sung-jae. We do know that he’s ambitious and eager to take over control of Hanjo. Seo Dong-jae got involved when Yeon-jae asked him to speak to her father on her behalf. Although he wasn’t able to get inside her father’s residence, he did succeed with investigating and discovering some medication in the trash. This information helped Yeon-jae realize her father’s current state. What if Lee Sung-jae found out about Dong-jae sneaking around and reporting to Yeon-jae? Would he have played a hand in his disappearance?
Jeon Seung-pyo
Tumblr media
Former Dongducheon Chief Jeon Seung-pyo (Moon Jong-won) is a favorite potential suspect amongst many viewers. He’s got anger issues and is implicated in two of the three cases Dong-jae was looking into. The first case centers around his demotion after assaulting his driver. This was the case that Woo Tae-ha pretended to have forgotten in front of Hwang Si-mok. He was also questioned for whether or not he was involved in Song Gi-hyeon getting transferred to the precinct where Jeon Seung-pyo’s nephew works. Yeo-jin and Si-mok observed that Seung-pyo could have overpowered Dong-jae, but is he guilty of attacking him?
Kim Su-hang
Tumblr media
Kim Su-hang (Kim Beom-su) is Jeon Seung-pyo’s nephew and finished serving his sentence for receiving bribes. We know he had an antagonistic relationship with the deceased Song Gi-hyeon, but he claims to have repented upon being questioned by Yeo-jin. Su-hang’s employer described him as a hardworking person and well-liked by the elders. Is he truly a changed person, or is he just putting on an act? While he has an alibi, is it possible that there’s an accomplice?
Baek Jung-gi
Tumblr media
Police team leader Baek Jung-gi (Jung Seung-gil) seemed pretty guilty earlier on. It appeared as though he was receiving bribes and potentially guilty of killing Song Gi-hyeon. When questioned after a witness comes forward, Jung-gi appears more innocent. He does seem genuinely remorseful about leading his team to accept bribes in order for Lee Dae-seong (Park Sung-il) to afford his ill mother’s medication. However, when the Segok officers are walking to the room to be identified by the witness, Jung-gi is the only officer who knows that there is a witness. Did he just hear it from colleagues or is he more involved than he lets on?
Prosecutor Seo Dong-jae’s Wife
Tumblr media
Seo Dong-jae’s wife (Choi Hee-seo) reacts atypically at the news of her husband’s disappearance. When the police check the DNA of the blood stain at the scene against her child’s cheek swab, she appears more worried about her children than her missing husband. However, she does film a video pleading for any witnesses to come forward. When Jang Geon (Choi Jae-woong) shows her the photo of Dong-jae’s bloody tie, she cries and pleads for help. However, when she watches the news with her son later, she looks oddly detached as she reassures her son that the news is not about his father. Is she hiding something?
The Father of One of the Drowning Victims
Tumblr media
The Tongyeong drowning case was the very first case we saw in the second season. There’s got to be more to the case than what we’ve seen thus far. The father of one of the drowning victims was visited by Choi Bit, Seo Dong-jae, and Han Yeo-jin separately. While he initially believed it was a simple drowning accident, the case became scrutinized for potential mishandling. Yeo-jin remembered the older, wooden flooring at the father’s home but has kept the information to herself. Is it just a coincidence or is the father involved with Dong-jae’s disappearance?
Tumblr media
Aside from the characters mentioned already, there are plenty more suspicious people to consider. Some that come to mind include Prosecutor Jeong Min-ha (Park Ji-yeon) who might harbor feelings for Dong-jae, and Lee Yeon-jae’s right-hand man Director Park (Jung Sung-il), who seems a bit shady. The culprit could even be someone not mentioned on this list at all. However, it’s clear that most of these people are hiding secrets. Only time will tell as Si-mok and Yeo-jin work together to expose the secrets. In the meantime, hang in there Dong-jae!
Don’t forget to tune in and watch Stranger S2, only on Netflix. Catch the culprit yourself!
Synopsis: In the midst of a power clash between prosecutors and police, Hwang Si-mok (Cho Seung-woo) and Han Yeo-jin (Bae Doo-na) reunite to uncover murky secrets as they pursue a labyrinth of intertwined cases.

Right now, The Killers are being driven out to the desert and proving themselves oddly incongruous characters. Mark Stoermer, bass player/songwriter, the one with the hippie beard, is 6ft 5in and not so much deadpan as dry as a cactus on the sun. "Jesus, does he have to drive so crazy?" balks Stoermer as we're bounced around in a people carrier across infinite dusty, bumpy terrain. "We're going so far out to go to the desert and there's desert everywhere. You know what? We're always in the desert. Photos, videos… We are The Desert Band. I never come out here. There's snakes out here." Dave Keuning, guitarist/songwriter, the one with the Marc Bolan hair, concurs. "I don't wanna get my boots dirty again," he laments. "This is almost like where we went for a music-magazine shoot a coupl'a years ago. That one sucked - they didn't even put us on the cover. They made a flap over three of us!" Ronnie Vannucci, drummer/songwriter, is always happy: "The desert makes you feel like a cowboy!" And Brandon Flowers, singer/songwriter/keyboardist, the one who looks like Matt Dillon in the 1980s and has never been flapped off a magazine cover in his life (and is, as far as we know, the world's only Morrissey-fixated rock'n'roll Mormon in eyeliner), loves the desert so much he's just bought a piece. "I bought some land," he smiles, all enormous American nuclear-white teeth. "I love the city too, but people don't realise the beauty in the ancient dirt. I try to capture that in our songs, how I feel when I'm looking at the sunsets in the mountains. Have you been to Los Angeles? Well, our sunsets are better!" They say Flowers is a competitive man. So much so, indeed, he's even competitive about sunsets...

Neon Waves and the Unexpected Sound: Readable Noise reviews Riptide Music Festival- Day 1
Tumblr media
South Florida’s premiere alternative music festival continues to hit it’s mark in combining the old and new
Fort Lauderdale- FTL has always been a city within a city.
Bordering the Miami gateway and its Northern areas of suburbia, it’s an odd metropolitan escape that has never quite received the note of recognition it deserves. Except for of course, in the arms of its beaches.
Stretching for miles, the solar mirrored sand along the Atlantic is serene as it is comforting, with a State Park nestled almost oddly alongside it. And it’s in this multi leveled plateau that 104.3 The Shark makes it’s home for Riptide Music Festival; South Florida’s only alternative based music festival, following the departure of it’s predecessor, 103.1 The Buzz’s annual Buzz Bake Sale.
The station, started by the former operator of the aforementioned FM local staple, John O’ Connell, is done in good hands and with good intentions; the festival occupying a good stretch and interspersed with two stages in one hand, and a cavalcade of acts in the other including modern staples in the form of The Killers, Silversun Pick-Ups and newcomers, the 1975.
Tumblr media
What is so vastly important however, is the reception and welcoming of new acts to the fold; such as White Reaper, who opened the festivities on the Sharkwrecked Main Stage, Friday afternoon.
Tumblr media
The quartet from Kentucky are an interesting and refreshing mix of The Cars sensibilities, alongside 90’s pop-punk. With tight melodies, and that special thrill that comes from seeing an act fresh not only in their element, but their ambition. It’s something that instantly makes you smile, and happily sway in their sound, with songs rooted in proper composition but with an unexpected, exciting edge to the performance.
It’s an introduction that is not only needed, but necessary in the genre, allowing new blood in as, no pun intended, chumming the water as proof of existence that the genre is still alive and well.
Tumblr media
Whether through the open and unique performance of Morgxn, whose infectious smile and honesty in their performance that touched on Southern gospel rock with an Elton John showmanship, or the female version of Rhye’s silky smooth vocals, in the form of DC’s own Shaed; it’s an infusion that leaves you breathless. This is the new class in it’s prime, and just a taste of some of the forms that are to come.
Tumblr media
One of those interests being K. Flay. There is an undeniable, enjoyable bite to her tracks, like a flavor you can’t quite describe but enjoy all the same. It’s a feeling that carries into whose live performance, and makes itself more clear. A gritter version of Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel, Flay’s stage presence is electric, opening “Not In California” to an already palpable crowd, she carriers herself in her words, and using that presence as an instrument itself. It’s something wonderful, and a wonderful addition to the start of the festival.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And with the new, so comes due respect to the those that helped pave way to the current path, in the form of Silversun Pick-Ups.
It’s also here, that we unfortunately ran into the sole issue of the ambitious festival and its current venue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the experience is rightfully and Thankfully fan friendly, geared with the right intentions (a day out on the Florida sands, with music and good memories in both the sun and moonlit hours), it made behind the scenes work at times, tenuous. Due to the venue itself, and the corporate strings that do follow with more major festivals operated by outside hands, we were unable to watch more than three songs of most of the bands featured in this review, including that of SSPU, Matt Maeson, and all acts throughout Saturday’s festivities as well.
Tumblr media
This is not at all to say the fault fell with the behind the scenes crew, who were more than gracious to all reporting on the festival.
However, with tied hands, the opportunity of accurately capturing the tempo, surprises and the elation of both bands and fans present were a bit chaotic at times, given the strict time restraint allowed by higher powers to capture photographic moments. It was truly the only downside of this otherwise truly special music festival.
After all, where else would you find Silversun Pick-Ups, whose glistening opening song “Neon Wound” was met with incredible, and deserved reception from the audience and perfectly cascading into latest “It Doesn’t Matter”, proudly showing the incredible power and chemistry the quartet still have; or The Revivalists, whose Southern honey tinged rock feels as at home on the picture perfect shore as it does in the glades, dancing to their sway of smooth ballads and jam oriented blues?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In that same vein of great surprises featured in this festival, were Judah & The Lion; a Cage The Elephant style of bombast meets Johnny Rotten explosion. With a flurry of strobe lights greeting their arrival, it was an unexpected and special treat to witness, opening with “Pep Talk” and seamlessly crescending into “Quarter Life Crisis”, frontman Brian Macdonald is a powerhouse to watch, and is reminiscent of those legendary live shows.
Their performance was a truly wonderful treat, with tracks that while undeniably smooth, formed like a punk show and leaving the crowd alight with excitement. Nowhere else will you get audio fireworks other than with this sound, and it’s one we were grateful to see for the time we were given to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And as the sun set, and the muggy Florida cool of the night set in, the Main Stage crowd began to grow closer in quarters, as the 1975 set the beginning machinations for the final songs of the first night to a frenzied crowd.
It isn’t a stretch to say the fervor attached with the Manchester based group is that of almost reminiscent of The Beatles in the frenetic frenzy that follows them with their audience, which while perhaps surprising at some moments, is not out of the ordinary.
Tumblr media
Their digital aesthetic intertwined with modern age love songs are relatable on an odd wavelength, and never left feeling out of place. In addition, their stage performance is electric, with frontman Matthew Healy coming out in full form wearing a Fugazi longsleeve and swinging his mic around as the act performed “Give It A Try”. And while most bands reach for their own brand of identity, as all acts should, it’s extremely rare that a band can actually make their own aesthetic, with a following that actively and appropriately combines photographs of love, heartache and neon with the act’s lyrics; something that the band also do in graphics of vaporwave stylings throughout their performance. Say what you may about the band, who are definitely riding and enjoying their wave, it’s always something special when an act can connect on such a level that sound becomes material.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it’s on that note that we get to the main headliner for the night, alternative and rock legends, The Killers.
The Las Vegas act first arrived on the scene in 2004 with a then uncarried bombast, catering to a curve no one had quite yet acknowledged, much less heard of. Following in the footsteps of New Order, The Cars and Depeche Mode, it was still a ground less followed as it was sacred.
As it should be, with the new wave acts paving the way for the future, which following the Madchester and deep house tiering, coupled with the arrival of grunge rock and nu-metal, remained a path that seemed to have stopped dead. Enter in the quartet, who not only took back up the mantle, but aimed to become it, releasing “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me” with a glamour and decadence not quite Las Vegas, but not quite English either. They were the perfect hybrid of UK arena interspersed with American ambition, and it’s a formula that is still followed today by the band, albeit with a pinch more Springsteen.
As the band open with signature “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine” if you have followed the band since their debut, it’s a consistent and almost parental wonder to see how far they have come.
Tumblr media
As with any band you may have grown up with, there is always that glimmer of wonder; something uncontainable that rises like static electricity after it’s first viewing, or listen. It’s a hard feeling to ensure, time after time and after nearly two decades, their formula is still potent.
With frontman Brandon Flowers coming more into his own, drummer Ronnie Vannucci still being the electrifying mixture of John Bonham meets Keith Moon and even adapting with evolution; allowing  guitarist Dave Keuning and bassist Mark Stoermer optional time away from touring while still being part of the experience, something that no band never truly been done before.
It’s a testament to the strength of the act themselves, still able to carry a crowd like absolute ease, performing “The Way It Was” with earnest bombast, and proof of the faith in their tracks. Whereas some acts might choose to leave their hits for the latter part of the set and lure potential new ears into the fold by keeping those immediately recognizable songs to the end, they proudly display it on their sleeve; Flowers leading into “Smile Like You Mean It” with a serene build-up of synths, or even the instant crowd pleaser of “Somebody Told Me”, all with neon graphics accompanying, alongside a glittering assembly of lights, complimenting the show as it’s own type of instrument.
Tumblr media
Their regard of the experience to be a apart of the music, giving support to each respective feel is the showmanship of Vegas coming off their sleeves, and it works well.
Including, and most importantly, for the audience themselves, with a recent concert rite of passage that The Killers have started doing at their shows: inviting any potential audience members who dare hold up signs asking to play a track with the band, and honoring that request. Tonight’s aptly named “Victim” was Jayson, a native of Gainesville who accompanied the act on  “For Reasons Unknown” and absolutely nail it; mirroring Vannucci’s signature energic frenzy throughout the hills and valleys of the tracks composition, had the crowd chanting following his performance, and deservedly so.
Tumblr media
And as the night continued with a spectacular cover of Tom Petty’s “American Girl”, and the act’s own “Run For Cover” you see the Las Vegas act still elicit that same special blend of magic the band have created; raising crowds to an electric level, and bringing the best out of tired feet and glittering eyes. It’s a recipe that’s hard to nail, and even harder to consistently deliver. And as The Killers arrived at their closing track, “Mr. Brightside” (cooly and beautifully split up into half Jacques Lu Cont remix and half original banger), with Flowers remarking earlier in the night the incredible spirit of the tightly packed crowd, promising to return next year, is where you see it.
Underneath the moonlight, and river of lasers and lights the desert act combine into their shows, the heartbeat of a crowd coming together for one more song. Right as the last note plays, and the sand settles once more, that smile starts creeping up without any necessary thought. It’s the strength of music delivered right, in a climate that’s created in the best components. And
Thankfully, bands like those featured today, alongside Riptide itself, are helping to truly keep that feeling alive.
