Now That’s a Snowplow! - June 2023 Keeping the road up to Pikes Peak cleared of snow is a mammoth job. And to do the job, they have a mammoth snow blower. This fairly new unit was parked right at the entrance to the parking lot at the peak. It makes a good image as well as a very interesting one. The tall cutters at the front slice off the snow so that the blower can throw it well away from the road. There are two exhaust stacks on this snow blower. The front one is for the powerful truck engine which moves the unit. The back stack is for the even more powerful engine which drives the blower. MWM

Pros and Cons of Using Snow Shovel
Does Snow Shovel really help in removing snow around the car?
Winter can bring beautiful snowfall, but it can also be a hassle. One task many people face during winter is shoveling snow around their cars. But is a snow shovel the best tool for the job? Here are the pros and cons of using a snow shovel to remove snow around your car, and consider whether it is the most effective method.
Advantages of Using a Snow Shovel:
Convenience: A snow shovel is a simple and inexpensive tool that can be easily stored in your car or garage. It does not require special training or knowledge and can be picked up and put to work in a matter of minutes.
Portability: Snow shovels are lightweight and easy to carry, making them ideal for removing snow in tight spaces or hard-to-reach areas around your car.
Versatility: Snow shovels can clear a wide range of surfaces, including driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. They can also be used to remove snow from around your car's wheels, undercarriage, and other areas where snow may have accumulated.
Disadvantages of Using a Snow Shovel:
Physical Effort: Shoveling snow can be physically demanding, particularly if you have a lot of snow to remove or if the snow is heavy and wet. This can be especially difficult for older individuals or those with physical limitations.
Time-Consuming: Shoveling snow can be time-consuming, especially if you have a large area to clear. It can also be frustrating if the snow keeps falling while you try to shovel, making it feel like a never-ending task.
Limited Effectiveness: A snow shovel may not be the most effective tool for removing large amounts of snow or clearing packed snow and ice. It may also be difficult to use a snow shovel to clear snow from the roof of your car or other hard-to-reach areas.
A snow shovel can be a convenient and effective tool for removing snow around your car, particularly in small amounts or tight spaces. However, there may be better choices to remove large amounts of snow or deal with packed snow and ice. If you live in an area with heavy snowfall or have physical limitations that make shoveling difficult, consider other options, such as a snow blower or a professional snow removal service. Ultimately, the best tool for removing snow around your car will depend on your specific needs and circumstances.

Some things are still fluffy!
Some things are still fluffy!
Yesterday, one of my daughters worked on shoveling paths in the yard, to the burn barrel and the electricity meter, while the other broke out little Spewie and started on the driveway. The problem is that, with the winds we’ve been having, what had earlier been light and fluffy snow is now hard packed. Since the wind was also coming from the north, it was blowing the snow off the garage roof and…

Today the Toro company could have filmed a kick-ass TV commercial at my house. The 15″ of fresh snow was light powder. My Toro snowblower is pretty big. I was throwing snow 25 feet vertically and about 40 feet horizontally.
After clearing the driveway and patio I made another race track around the back yard for the dogs.
Some neighbors have a roommate, a guy about my son’s age. He was out there wearing jeans instead of snow pants and wielding a plastic shovel against the snow. Perhaps he was working off some of the rent payment.
A city snow plow left about three feet of heavy snow at the end of our driveways. I went over to clear the bottom of that other driveway. The guy was so relieved.
Later, another neighbor asked to borrow my snowblower because his is broken. I don’t mind doing the work myself. It’s fun. But I had to get back to office work and gladly let him use my Toro. I was rewarded with a 12-pack of Surly beer. Have fun with the snowblower or get free beer? There’s no wrong answer.
