REVIEW
Upon A Midnight Dreary: A Halloween Anthology
The perfect way to read favorite historical romance authors and meet new ones. I have seen many of these names in the past but realized, while looking through the list of authors, that I have only read a few of these authors’ work. I have read four of the twenty stories and each one was interesting and well written. I am looking forward to reading one or two per night until Halloween.
The stories span the centuries, are wonderfully told, had paranormal disturbances of the nice and not so nice ghost type, and all that I read made me want to read more.
Rohaise the Red of Delgatie Castle by Heather McCollum was scary for more than one reason. Glad I didn’t read IT before I went to sleep because that ghost was a nightmare in the making though the romance between Abigail and Kerrick was a delight!
Nevernmore by Kathryn Le Veque was first up in the anthology but second that I read. The evil abbess was someone I really didn’t like but I was thrilled with the romance between the night and his lady.
Blind Faith by Anna Markland was a sweet story with a ghostly presence that encouraged the blind soldier and the new housekeeper that came to his home. Liked this story quite a bit though not necessarily as scary as some of the others.
Into the Night by Chastity Bowlin had a mail order marriage with the couple meeting at an Inn only to have a rather horror filled night to contend with. This one was scary but in a different way that the first two.
I am eager to read the other books in this anthology and have told my sister that we might need it for our ereaders so we can revisit the stories again…or at least I can. Maybe I should have my daughter buy them for me as a Christmas gift? Hm…
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by the authors in this anthology? Definitely
Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for the ARC – this is my honest review.

Shortz #1: How Did It Come to This?
Short Stories by Poetess Denise Fyffe Shortz #1: How Did It Come to This?
Thomas stopped mid-stride on his way out the door.
His heart was heavy, as an anchor in the Chesapeake Bay. He turned, took a few steps and looked at the woman he had loved for fifteen years.
“Will you not reconsider Rosa?”
Hope floated to the surface of her eyes. But then a dark cloud hid her earnest intent.
“Thomas,” she sighed. “It’s too late. It is all in the burnt ashes of our old…

Hi! I hope I am not bothering you. If you don’t mind me asking, I don’t know if you have already talked about that before, but do you have any Dracula related books or movies that you would recommend, either because it is (at least relatively) good or because it is so bad it’s funny? I don’t mind if it is very old or weird or in any language (as long as there are subtitles). Thanks and have a wonderful day :)
Hi anon! Sorry for the late reply, I just saw this.
I think I’ve given some recommendations for Dracula adaptations in the past, but I don’t think I’ve ever answered this question specifically or made a master post, so here we go. My Dracula recommendations.
(Relatively) Good Movies:
My personal favorite is the 1977 BBC one, which you can watch here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=96OIILetaho
I also adore the 1958 “Horror of Dracula”, which is a classic. I’m pretty sure this is one you might have to pay for, though. Pretty much any of the subsequent Hammer Horror Dracula movies are great, but they do get very cheesy after this one.
Another Hammer Horror Dracula movie I reccomend in the 1973 “Satantic Rites of Dracula”. It’s hilarious.
Then there’s the 1979 Nosferatu silent film, which I thought was just beautiful to watch. Not the most accurate to the book, but very aesthetically pleasing. It’s based off of the 1922 silent film of the same name, which I have yet to watch.
If you like anime or manga, there’s also Hellsing, which I enjoy, but it’s very different from the book.
So Bad it’s Good Movies:
2004 Van Helsing. Cheesy, very, very cheesy. Pretty typical early-2000s action film. Mindless fun. I really like Frankenstein’s Creature in this, and also Dracula.
The 2006 BBC film, lovingly dubbed “Arthur’s Magical Syphillis Adventure” by our own @dracupa. Need I explain more? You can watch it here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NGMWgk18M3Q
Now, there is one more I reccomend but I can’t decide if it’s good or bad or what.
That is the 1968 made-for-tv adaptation. It’s not excellent, but it’s got some great westenray scenes. You can watch it here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GhqKw_YjilE
Now, for books:
(Relatively) Good Books:
The Many Faces of Van Helsing. This is an anthology of short stories, revolving around specifically Van Helsing. Not all of them are good, but most of them are excellent. My personal favorite short storiy in this anthology is “Remember Me” by Tanith Lee.
Sherlock Holmes vs Count Dracula. This one is pretty short, and so much fun. I do have some issues with it (mainly how they characterize Van Helsing), but Sherlock and Watson are soooo good. Especially if you like JohnLock. Here’s the audiobook: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0TX4rvB6mIs
I also really like the book “Terovolas” by Edward M. Erdelac. I haven’t read all of it, admittedly, bc I can’t find the full book online for free, but what I have read is wonderful. The writing is engaging, the characters are interesting and dynamic, and I just love how Erdelac writes Van Helsing.
The Journal of Professor Abraham Van Helsing, by Allen C Kupfer. This one isn’t spectacular, but it was fun to read and pretty short (I finished it in two days). This one is also Van Helsing-centric. I thought the ending was neat.
So Bad it’s Good Books:
Tbh, I don’t really know if books can be classified as “so bad its good” just because they take more energy to interact with than movies do, but honestly? Just about anything by Fred Saberhagen. Or Dacre Stoker.
There are a few other Dracula adaptations out there, and if you want to watch all of them I’d reccomend just searching it up, but most of them are boring imo.
Hope this helps! And I hope you have a wonderful day too :)

Usually, when people say the first kiss I imagine something romantic and beautiful even tho I, personally, never heard of a romantic first kiss story. When reblogging tell me a story of your first kiss and let’s see if we’ll find one!
Mine:
So, I was 13 and there was that boy that really liked me and was friend with all of my friends. He was nice, but I wasn’t into him (probably because I was 13 and I had no intentions of having a boyfriend).
One day I was at a gymnastics practice and my friends realized that the boy was standing in front of the practicing room. As I found out later one of my friends told him to come because it would be romantic to watch me (?!). So they were all trying to make me go out and say hi. At the moment when the coach wasn’t looking they pushed me out of the room and told me they are going to hold the door until I don’t kiss him.
In that moment a quick kiss with a guy was nothing compared to the rage of my coach when realizing I wasn’t in the room. So I looked at him (he was frozen, poor little thing) just staring at me, kissed him quickly and run back into the room.
Not so romantic, hm?

Any of the fluffy storiy ideas you asked for?
Are you asking if I’m writing any?
Not right this moment.  I got several that could be longfics, but not really short ones (and I’m saving them for later, but I’m not starting another long one at the moment).  I also got smut, but I’m 200% not feeling smut for smut’s sake. Do you have any particular interests for me to gnaw on and see if I can stir up something?

What were some of your past identities/aliases
I discuss them in my short storiy segment of the experiment: Simon’s Snacks, which are written in direct reply to questions about my past.
I am not going to tell you any of the ones that are recent because I don’t want people following me and tracking me down.
Peter Conroy and Albert Hall were recent ones I discussed

My Oldest Friend
My oldest and most profound relationship,
the one I hold closest to my heart and loathe with the most passion,
the most complicated yet ever-present relationship in my life.
Is that which I hold with the darkness,
the shadow,
the night.
It has been with me since the moment of my birth,
and will be the last thing I see before I die.
It envelopes me in warmth,
holds me when I cannot hold myself.
It comforts me,
traps me in a way that makes me feel free.
It suffocates me,
It lies and hides the truth,
It takes over my soul.
It is void of life.
Void of love and hope and air to breath.
I love the dark,
Or do I?
I don’t know,
I’ve never been without it.
I know It scares me,
but I find that inviting,
It is my natural enemy,
and oldest friend.
It is an enigma,
A paradox.
It exists in two opposite forms at once,
The Schrodinger's Cat of relationships.
My enemy, My friend, my lover, my ex, my predator, my prey, my stalker, my
attacker, my captive, my kidnapper, my sibling, my parent, my child, myself.
I know it better than my own mind,
but could not explain a thing about it to you.
Except this:
I prefer it to the light.
The light is boring, normal, temporary.
The darkness will remain when the light’s long faded.
It will be the last thing left when everything else is gone.
Maybe that’s why it is the way it is.
It’s lonely.
It’s as alone as I am.
Well, don’t worry darkness,
you have me.
And while like the light I may be temporary,
I will never leave you.
You are my oldest and most profound relationship,
my closest and most trusted companion.
My truest never-ending friend.
You are alone,
But so am I,
let’s be alone together.

Buried Treasure * from a writing prompt*
“Stop! We hit something,” Smith said, “Look here, there’s a chest, a big one. Red, help me get it open.”
I dropped my shovel and went over to Smith’s side of the hole. Sure enough, there was a chest. I helped him brush the dirt off the top of it. Smith cracked it open and immediately we were assaulted by a smell so horrendous it caused us both to cough and gag. Smith looked up at Captain Greyson who nodded for us to continue. It was a big chest and it took both of us to lift the lid all the way open. We let the lid fall back as we looked into hell itself. We now knew what the smell was. There were four bodies, all beheaded with their limbs bound together and their heads at their feet.
“Who would mark this place on a map?” I asked.
Captain Greyson climbed into the hole. He reached into the chest, picked up one of the heads, and looked at it intently. It was a man’s head and unless I am quite mistaken, it seemed to resemble the captain. He dropped it back into the chest before pulling out his flask of whiskey.
“You’re going to burn them?” Smith asked as the captain opened the flask and flung the contents over each body in the chest.
I looked at them again. The bodies had been stabbed many times, seemingly after they had been put in the chest. All of their blood mixed at the bottom of the chest adding to the stench caused by their rotting flesh. They couldn’t have been there long, which didn’t make sense considering the age of the paper on which the map was drawn. They were also all men… perhaps we weren’t the only crew to come upon this site.
“Could someone have replaced the treasure with these men,” I asked as the captain lit a match and pressed it to the end of a cigar.
“I have no doubt that is what happened. These men all bear the same mark,” Captain Greyson replied.
“They were from another crew?” Smith asked.
“Yes. It was my son’s crew. Someone left this for me to see it.”
“But how could they know we would get that map?” Smith again, staring at the bodies and then at the heads. He picked one up… “George!”
“That’s your son?” I asked.
“No, this is a friend of his. And George was the only one I showed the map to.”
“Why would your son kill mine, Smith?” Captain Grey son asked in a voice much too calm for the situation.
“I don’t know, Captain. I don’t know that he did.”
“Well you can ask him when you see him in the afterlife,” the captain said and kicked Smith into the chest and dropped his cigar in after.
Smith screamed as the captain drive his cutlass into his heart and the fire began to catch on the first body. The captain took my own
flask and emptied it into the chest before climbing out of the hole.
“Get some wood. Stoke the fire. When they’re nothing but ashes, bury them.”
“Aye, aye captain,” I said as I climbed out of the hole.  I knew in my heart Smith’s son would suffer a worse death than this.
