TOO LAZY FOR A MARATHON? THINK AGAIN
Not even 12 years old, Aiden Jaquez has spent the last four and a half years running a half marathon in every one of the 50 states. It's a major achievement for someone so young.
Eleven years of age Jaquez, from Montgomery, Illinois, finished the IMT Des Moines half marathon in Iowa on Sunday, apparently being the youngest individual ever to run a half marathon in each express, the 50 States Half Marathon Club said.
As per the club, Jaquez ran his first half marathon at six years of age in Sarasota, Florida. He was roused by his grandma, Kathleen Taylor, subsequent to seeing her finish a race. He said he loved her glossy award and needed one of his own. From the start, their objective was simply to run a half-marathon in each state, yet Jaquez soon acknowledged he could be the most youthful individual ever to do it. The team crossed the finish line in Iowa together, finishing their joint objective. He grew a fan base throughout the years, as his family recorded his notable adventures on Facebook. His grandma was close by consistently.
He cherishes running half marathons on the grounds that relatively few children his age do it, and it's enjoyable to run and simply get a great deal of vitality out and keep running with his grandmother, said Aiden. Thinking that it's simpler to run long distances, provided that he runs short distances excessively quick, included Jaquez.
Iowa was the last state Jaquez expected to finish his club's 50 States Half Marathon Challenge. As per the club, the past record-holder was Syrafina Mohammed, who finished her 50th half marathon in 2016 at 12 years old.
Jaquez's record has not yet been formally confirmed by Guinness. However, his family is confident.

‘I’m just happy I finished it’: 11-year-old Illinois boy runs half marathon in all 50 states
MONTGOMERY, Ill. — What did you do this weekend? For one 11-year-old boy, the answer to that question is that he achieved his ambition to run a half marathon in all 50 states.
He may also have set a world record.
Aiden Jaquez from Montgomery, Illinois, has achieved his ambition to run a half marathon in all 50 states.
When Aiden Jaquez from Montgomery, Illinois, was just 6 years old, he wanted to run a half marathon just so he could have a cool, shiny medal like the ones his grandma had. So he ran all 13.1 miles.
Then he found out that he could set a world record by becoming the youngest person to run a half marathon in all 50 US states.
Aiden was obsessed with the Guinness Book of World Records. His grandmother, Kathleen Taylor, said the sixth-grader has always read the books from beginning to end and pored over them.
When he figured out there was a chance to be featured in its pages, he set himself the goal of being the youngest person ever to run a half marathon in all 50 states.
His first half marathon was in Sarasota, Florida, when he was 6. Then he began running all over the country, joining half marathons with Taylor.
Aiden Jaquez from Montgomery, Illinois, has achieved his ambition to run a half marathon in all 50 states.
Last weekend he crossed the finish line at the IMT Des Moines Half Marathon and crossed Iowa off his list — it was the last state he needed.
“When I was 6 years old, my grandma was running in Florida, and there was a cool medal,” Aiden told CNN. “So I begged her and begged her if I could run a half marathon, and she finally said yes. We found out not too long after that that there was a record. I’m just happy I finished it.”
Taylor said she started the process of getting verified with Guinness about two years ago. She said the current record is held by Syrafina Mohammed of Miami, Florida, who was 12 when she completed her 50-state journey in 2016. It could take several months to get Aiden’s record verified by Guinness.
But being in the Guinness Book of World Records was all the motivation he needed. The journey has always been Aiden’s choice, said Taylor.
Aiden Jaquez from Montgomery, Illinois, has achieved his ambition to run a half marathon in all 50 states.
There were races where the weather was dreadful — rainy or very cold — and she would ask him if he was sure he wanted to run. He always said yes.
The same goes for the travel. Running has taken them all over the country. Every single time they had to travel, Aiden was excited to cross another place off his list and come one step closer to the world record, said Taylor.
It’s also always been fun for him. Every race, he stops along the way to pet some of the dogs he sees.
“Most of the time he is just being goofy,” Taylor said. “He stops and pets dogs along the way. If he sees a park, he’ll stop at a park. He’s having a lot of fun. Most of the time he’s just having fun, and that’s all that matters.”
Now that his 50-state journey is over, Aiden plans to start playing football and run in local races.

“One day someone will fall in love with you despite all your flaws! Then magic will happen in your life!” ― Avijeet Das
Not unlike a bricks and mortar home, a home-on-wheels requires regular maintenance. When you own a home there is always something to be done … from replacing batteries in smoke detectors to a new roof or furnace. Depending on the age of the home you might have to replace old wiring and plumbing. If you’re lucky the list includes primarily cosmetic changes. And so, with a 28-year-old vehicle you can certainly expect not only regular maintenance but also replacement of key components of the machine. And if you have an aesthetic bone in your body you will want to also make some cosmetic changes too.
Looking at the underbelly of the Vanagon with mechanic, Chris Melo.
When we bought our then twenty-four-year-old Volkswagen campervan four years ago we had a few minor maintenance issues taken care of before we hit the road. We also made cosmetic changes like new curtains and a new linoleum floor and added some storage solutions like baskets, a roof rack and Thule box.

Van restoration by Mark Robson.
Choosing the paint colour: 1978 Ravenna Green.
Second life for the old VW.
It wasn’t until two months later when we reached the northern tip of Newfoundland that we had our first breakdown. It wasn’t that it was major – it was just a water pump. The hitch was that we were in a remote part of Canada where it took a week to receive the replacement water pump. In the end it was an incredible place to spend a week. We met awesome people – locals and travellers – some with whom we are still in touch. If you are not on a schedule, and we were not, breakdowns can be a blessing. For one thing you may end up exploring a place you had only meant to pass through quickly. And the memories of your time there may end up becoming some of your favourites. This first breakdown definitely set the tone for future breakdowns.
#gallery-0-18 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-18 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-18 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-18 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
At L’Anse aux Meadows, NL – our water pump needed to be replaced.
Enjoying our time at the top of NL.
This breakdown / maintenance formula has worked well for us as we’ve travelled from coast to coast in Canada and the USA and into Mexico in our van:
We have used two websites to help us find Vanagon mechanics all over North America: Vanagon Rescue Squad and Road Haus. These resources have been super helpful. We’ve also referenced forums on the The Samba and available articles and video on the GoWesty site.
Remain calm. Don’t stress over the time it might take to receive a part or how long the repair will take.
Trust those willing to help you. And be grateful! But also be informed yourself. Research, research, research.
Make the most of being in the place in which you are ‘stranded.’
Try not to make plans. Be flexible. Adapt.
Use the experience as a learning opportunity.
Trust your intuition. Learn to know the sounds your van makes and when they change you will recognize there is a potential problem.

Just as we were driving into Marathon, TX our alternator gave up the ghost.
We decided to meet the new alternator in Alpine but only made it half way.
Della Shackelford to the rescue!
Thanks to Sheriff Skelton for towing us to Alpine and finding a garage to install the new alternator.
We half jokingly say that we have replaced almost all of the parts in this Volkswagen van. In truth we have replaced a good number and some of them more than once.
“Gumption is the psychic gasoline that keeps the whole thing going.”― Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
We have visited mechanics all over Canada and the USA. We do have our favourites! One of the challenging issues of dealing with maintenance and breakdowns when you are living and travelling around the continent in your home-on-wheels is the lack of continuity in mechanical care. Sometimes we wish we could visit a favourite mechanic in Sarasota or San Diego but the distance is too great and the issue at hand needs a mechanic that is far closer and immediate.
#gallery-0-20 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-20 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-20 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-20 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Ron and Fran of Sunshine Auto Garage in Sarasota. Two of our favourite VW specialists.
We loved these guys at San Diego Westy!
We know this van so well now. We know every sound and smell intimately. It has, after all, been our home for the past four years. We’ve loved it despite it’s weaknesses and sometimes because of them. Just because something is old you don’t necessarily discard it. You cherish it, treat it with respect, love it. It is, after all, in many ways no different than we are…. aging, tired sometimes, parts are wearing and in need of a break. We have pushed this old van to many corners of this continent and for the most part it has been uncomplaining and we are so grateful. We have after all experienced magic these past four years. Thank you Van Morrison and Gibb!

“Believe in Yourself a Little More.”
 ~unknown
Upon the sale of our place, my husband and I moved to his dad’s house. What we thought it would be a fast transition with an estimated stay of no more than 30-60 days, it turned out to be 3 long months. We were very grateful for his accommodation, but my training routine and body was getting very cranky by the end of the second month!
My scheduled was jammed six-day a week. Mondays and Wednesdays were designated for strength training; Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays were my typical running days, and Fridays was allocated for stretch/foam roll/rehab work. Sundays was my sleep-in day but not really a rest day to simply do nothing. And please, let’s not forget to add the 8-5, M-F work schedule as icing-on-the-cake because the bills got to get paid!
The only way to get these workouts in was to get up every single weekday at 5:00 a.m., otherwise it would not get it done. After work, the only time I had was to grab somewhat a decent dinner, go to the in-laws to unpack the day’s dirty laundry and dirty snack/lunch dishes only to pack a new set of cleaning clothes and snacks for the next day. Feeding my puppy was next, shower, then trying to go to bed by no later than 10:00 p.m. to get somewhat a decent sleep and recovery time.
Once we closed on our house, the renovation process begun. We didn’t have a major renovation project, but we certainly needed to hire a contractor to get the heavy projects done. To that end, a renovation project that should had only taken an average of 4-5 weeks ended up taking 10 long weeks! The contractor took his sweet-time, working whatever hours he wanted (like 4 hours a day on many occasions) and taking an entire week off due to what he said was a family emergency. My husband and I were stuck! We had already invested half of the money and time, so we really had to just make the best of the situation and keep the complaint double-digit pace to avoid any attitude by the contractor. God forbid getting on a contractor’s bad side, right!?
My training and energy was taking a hit and my body was asking for help. Not having my own space or the time to decompress from one activity to the next was getting draining. In one of the assigned treadmill speed workout in mid-August my quads and hamstrings let me know that something was off. At first, it occurred to me was a normal soreness, but in the follow run (a 12-miler run on Saturday), quads, hams and back let me know that it needed a lot of attention. I settled for a 9-miler on that day.
I rest up from running for a couple days, but the recovery process was slow at that point. My rehab routine wasn’t working so I had to schedule a few PT sessions with my physical therapist. I was really scared because the discomfort was affecting my hip and back – and hellooo – my husband just had back surgery. In the process of addressing this injury, I got an infection in one of my root canals. Sure, why not! Some bed rest was then mandatory but the hamstrings and quads were still not healed.
Throughout the month of September, I was only able to login 40 miles in comparison to 67.4 miles in August and 72.2 in July – right in the midst of moving and all the other shenanigans. But in September, my scheduled got even crazier since the thick of the renovation was about to get “done”; therefore, it was time for my husband and I to get our sweat equity in the bank. I don’t mind grabbing the paint roller and some other tools, but doing it after a workday or on Sundays when this is so supposed to be your rest day, it didn’t settled well for me, but it had to be done and my husband needed my help.
I really should not be complaining because whether I was training for a half marathon or just running for the fun of it, it’s totally my own free choice to do so. My husband on the other hand, he was still doing PT and healing from back surgery, and yet, he was doing what he could to help us get set to move-in.
My scheduled half marathon race was the Florida West Coast in Sarasota, FL on October 2. When I signed up, I was sure we would be done with renovation and settled in – wrong! I had no choice but to defer to next year, besides I wasn’t 100% healthy. My other option was to run the Lighthouse Loop Half marathon in Port Orange, FL on October 30 so I signed up for it. I was confident that therapy would help me be ready by then. My husband also had set the deadline for the contractor to turn-in our keys and expressed our expected move-in date.
We finally moved-in on the eve of hurricane Matthew’s landing through Florida’s east coast. The walls needed to be painted, the floor needed to be done, the kitchen needed its make-over, the backyard needed landscaping and the house needed all the little projects that comes with finishing touches. However, we could not be happier to start living in our own home and waking up to the sight a nice pool in the backyard.
R2-D2 is ready to move-in!
Although we were living in our home, my training routine was far from being stable and I was still playing the multi-tasking game. There’s no short cut to training. And unless you plan on having a miserable race or taking the time to finish it, it’s hard to depend on half training. Through these experiences and trying to get “everything” done, my body and mind got burnt out. The body and mind need rest and we can only push so far before realizing the consequences of our actions. With caution and no PRs in sight, Lighthouse Loop, here I come!

First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon Recap.... And Other Antics!! #runningpup #whitedog #runCLE40 #runyourtailoff
For the past couple of years, I’ve really struggled with any improvement on my pace. The most truthful answer I can give is that I am not consistent in my running. In the past, I would run three or four times in one week and then not run for two weeks. Then, I would lace up and try to run a half marathon or something equally crazy and wonder why my pace was stuck in the 14 minute mile or even…

race photos - 2011 sarasota half marathon
I honestly have no idea why I ever get excited to see race photos. There is just nothing flattering about getting your picture taken while running.
Somehow, Jeremy always looks good though. I guess if you're a guy, sweaty with a mean look on your face works. Not so much for me.
That being said, here are the photos from the half last weekend. The one of the three of us is kind of cute -except for me. Seriously, remind me to stop lifting my arms when I cross the finish line. I always regret it when I see my pit stains ruining the pictures.
I seriously look like such a tool in this photo. But at least I don't look like I peed my pants. As always, Quinny is rocking it.
