hello party people - first of all, hi to all the peeps who followed me for my st fanarts?! like, hello, thank you for your support TwT. it's kind of unbelievable to me what posting fandom stuff can do to your reach lol, like it may not be much to many people, but over 300 likes on a post on instagram and twitter + so many shares on tumblr?? i am truly flabbergasted. 14 year old me would have had a stroke on sight if she saw that now. imagine if i didn't start watching the show finally this year lol.

By the time this posts, the 2nd run of this release may be sold out (check out Molina's page...there might be some there). Slumberland Records and Speakeasy Studios SF are co-releasing this ode to The Softies and Tony Molina.

Tony Molina get the lion's share of the ode. Rose Melberg and Jennifer Sbragia (The Softies) cover the entirety of Molina's "Dissed and Dismissed". Molina covers three songs by The Softies. It's everything you think it might be.

We'd previously covered another excellent Speakeasy Studios band - The Lost Days.

This fall’s darkest thriller reflects how the pursuit of power and sovereignty can make people walk over corpses. Literally.

The year is 1918. A relentless pandemic is spreading across the continent. While the Spanish flu is gaining a foothold in Norway, the indigenous population of our country has already fought a year-long battle against another evil: societies attempt to cleanse itself of Sami culture.

“”Possession” is absolutely my most ambitious film so far. I spent many years on the script and a long time researching to create this universe.”

This is what director and screenwriter Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken says about his newest movie. He is previously known from films like "An Affair" (2018) and "Merry Christmas" (2020).

He’s teamed up with award-winning actors like Jan Sælid ("Etaten", "Kong Curling") and Tarjei Sandvik Moe ("An Affair").

The universe he talks about is set over 100 years ago. Norway had recently been freed from the union with Sweden and the Norwegianization, which had already been a topic since the middle of the 19th century, reached its height.

Lost language

“The Sami culture was systematically and gradually pushed out of society over many hundreds of years,” says Torjer Olsen, professor of indigenous studies and head of the center for Sami studies at the University of Tromsø.

The professor highlights the school as an active part of the Norwegianization. Pupils who spoke Sami were being shamed, often in combination with physical punishment.

“Today, there are only around 200 people who speak Southern Sami left,” says the professor.

He believes films like "Possession" are part of a positive trend that’s opened up more of the Sami history in popular culture, with parallels to films like "Sameblood" (2016) and "Frost II" (2021).

“We are not as afraid to tackle it now as before; it is longer between stereotypical representations of the Sami people,” says Olsen.

A new time

"The Norwegian state is founded on the realms of two people, the Norwegian and the Sami."

This was said by King Harald during the opening of the third Sámi Parliament in 1997.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a significant proportion of Norwegians saw it differently.

Some were willing to go to great lengths to mark what they believed to be their territory. As does “Possession's” darkest character, Lauritz.

A pastor who has lived as a missionary in Madagascar, and now returns home to his family near Femunden.

There he wants to build a church on an old, South Sami burial ground. This will lead to reactions, from both the living and the dead.

“At that time it was not allowed for people with Sami names to own land. This resulted in many being robbed of land that was originally theirs,” said Professor Olsen.

Especially in the southern Sami areas - from Mo i Rana in the north, to Femunden in the south - the Sami areas were exposed to Norwegians who stole their land during the industrialization.

Missionary in Madagascar

Director Dahlsbakken himself spent much of his childhood in the areas around Femunden. He does not hide that he has been inspired by stories from his ancestors, who grew up around the lake.

“I have spent a lot of time in Os and Røros and heard many stories from the mining community there - the mines were the oil of that time,” he says, adding that mining has a natural place in the film.

The missionary environment, which we meet in "Possession" through Pastor Lauritz, is something Dahlsbakken is more familiar with than most. A few generations back, his family - without any other comparison to the troubled pastor - actually went on a mission in Madagascar.

“We have always had a safari hat hanging at home belonging to my grandmother's aunt Kristine and to her trips to Madagascar. I loved hearing stories about it and their undertaking as missionaries,” recalls Dahlsbakken

Although Norway has come to terms with how the indigenous population has been treated over time, the film deals with topics that are still around in various forms.

“How we humans encounter the unknown is eternally relevant. We are far more enlightened now than we were 100 years ago, but we still see examples of how xenophobia is expressed,” concludes the director.

"Possession" has its cinema premiere on 7 October.

Super Robot Wars 30

If you’ve been reading HG101 for awhile, you may be wondering what happened to that Super Robot Wars series. Long story short: There are over 90 (!!!) official releases in the series and almost all of them are Japanese only outside some rough translations done for obscure, limited releases, and region locked Steam ports. Until now. Super Robot Wars 30 was not only released on PS4 and Steam in English and for English speaking territories (unlike the VXT trilogy), it was translated by the team who translated Recettear. It’s also great timing because this release marks the game’s 30th anniversary celebration, a combination of everything the series has tried with one of the most bonkers series lists.
