Theory, the pokey hallucination demon thing actually creates an alternate reality. A nightmare reality but one the victim would still be tempted by. The toxin has magical properties allowing Buffy to see glimpses into this newly created world.
This would aid the demon, which prefers to sting its victim and run, by securing an easy and abundant food store when the poisoned person inevitably kills their loved ones (and possibly themselves, we don't ever really get the final outcome to what the poison does.)
In the end of the episode, institution Buffy sinks back into the normal state she would be in for that reality, no longer connected to the main timeline Buffy's mind.

SUMMARY:
What if Eddie and Christopher had also come over during Buck's catastrophic at-home date with Natalia? How will she handle this particular part of Buck's life?
EXCERPT:
He listened as Kameron explained how she and Connor were fighting, how she felt he was pulling away, and that she needed a place to crash for a couple days. Buck opened his mouth to offer his apartment, when another noise distracted him.
A key in the lock of his front door.
“Buck, you home?” Eddie called as he opened the door.
“Buck!” Christopher called a moment after his father.
Buck was frozen in place. Inside his apartment now were three separate parts of his life that he hoped never would intersect. Eddie came to a standstill just inside the door, seeing Natalia first, then Kameron. Chris, like the angel he was, cut through all the tension and immediately strode over to Buck.
“I need help with a project, and Dad’s hopeless at it, can you help me?” Chris asked.
