How the Outlander Season 5 Finale Uses Easter Eggs To Tell Its Story
There were so many references and Easter eggs in the Outlander Season 5 finale.
The Outlander Season 5 finale was much more self-referential than most episodes of this TV show, as we delve into Claire’s subconscious as she dissociates to avoid the reality of her abduction and abuse at the hands of Lionel Brown. Instead of staying in the present, her mind brings her to a 20th century home filled with her 18th century family celebrating American Thanksgiving. The modern house is populated with references to things we have seen Claire experience in previous seasons of this show.
It’s a clever, visually-specific way of telling us about Claire: what matters to her, what she’s afraid of, and what she’s desperately trying to avoid. It is also the kind of episodic writing and direction that wouldn’t work for a less fervid viewership. The creators obviously had faith that fans will have been paying close attention, and the clues to Claire’s past will therefore mean something to them. Let’s break down all of the references and Easter Eggs in the Season 5 finale…
The House Painting
In the dissociation scenes, we see Claire looking at an abstract painting of a house, done in oranges and reds. No, this is not a painting of the house on Fraser’s Ridge on fire, as some people have understandably guessed, but a painting of the house on Fraser’s Ridge totally not on fire.

The Song
The song playing on the record player during Claire’s dissociation scene is 1967 tune “Never My Love” by The Association. It also gives the episode its name.
The Orange
One of the first Easter eggs in Claire’s dissociation sequence comes in the form of a lone orange, which is a call back to the orange that the King of France gives Claire back in Season 2’s “Faith.”
“After Claire sleeps with the King of France to save Jamie’s life, when she leaves Versailles Palace, the last thing she does is pick up the orange and take it with her,” executive producer Tonia Graphia told Elle. “It was a small gesture by Claire, a choice that symbolizes that she’s leaving with her dignity. Matt and I included it on purpose in Claire’s dream-escapes in 612: The orange being visible in the opening shot in her living room, then, when faced with the choice of whether to kill Lionel in revenge, Claire flashes on the orange—and then her walking out with it—a symbol that she takes the high road. She’s got a piece of herself that no one can ever take from her. We’re hoping the fans who remember the episode in Season 2 will get it!”
The Vase
The vase we see in Claire’s “dream home” is a callback to the very first episode of Outlander. In “Sassenach,” Claire wonders in voiceover how her life might have turned out different if she made different choices, like buying a vase she saw in a shop window.
Strange, the things you remember. Single images and feelings that stay with you down through the years. Like the moment I’d realized I’d never owned a vase. That I’d never lived in any place long enough to justify having such a simple thing. And how at that moment, I wanted nothing so much in all the world as to have a vase of my very own. — Claire as narrator, S01E01 Sassenach
The Dragonfly Toy
At one point in the sequence, a child is playing with a dragonfly toy. The second book in the Outlander book series is called Dragonfly in Amber, as is the final episode of Season 2. Both titles are a reference to the eternal strength of Jamie and Claire’s love. Like a dragonfly in amber, it can withstand even the forces of time (travel).
Claire’s Red Dress
Claire’s bright red dress seems to be a callback to the gorgeous dress that Claire wore in Season 2 when she and Jamie were in France. Or maybe red is just Claire’s power color?
Ian’s Uniform
Ian is dressed in a military uniform in the 20th century dream sequence. This is not a reference to anything that has happened on the show—other than Young Ian leaving home for a long while—but seemingly a reference to the Vietnam War, which would have been going on in late 1960s/early 1970s when this scene seems to be “set.”
While much of Ian’s uniform is a historically accurate U.S. Army uniform, he is wearing a patch on his shoulder that has a silhouette of a Native American, which is a reference to the character’s time with the Mohawk. Also, the medal ribbons are actually made out of Indian wampum beads,” Outlander costumer Trisha Biggar told Town & Country. You can read more about the clever costume choices she made for this sequence via Town & Country.
Jamie’s Outfit
While it might seem like Jamie’s outfit is strictly circa 1770s, Biggar told Town & Country that they made some 20th century adjustments, such as “narrowing down the fullness of the shirt” and “making his breeches look more like a 20th century pair of trousers.”
“Breeches go into the boots, so we just made the trousers go into boots, too,” shared Biggar, “and we made his trousers out of a black denim, so it was a contemporary fabric, but still gave him his 18th century silhouette. He sort of fits in to the 20th century, but is still very much of his own century.”
“You’re Shaking So Hard…”
There were certain lines of dialogue that were direct callbacks to lines of dialogue from earlier seasons. At one point, Dream Jamie says “You’re shaking so hard, it’s making my teeth rattle,” which is something the character said to Claire back in the Outlander premiere.
Murtagh & Jocasta
While Claire doesn’t imagine other deceased loved ones in her dissociation sequence, she does interestingly imagine Murtagh, who died earlier this season, as part of the Thanksgiving Day scene. Murtagh, who mentions Prestonpans at one point in the “day,” is seemingly in a happy relationship with Jocasta, who is noticeably not blind in the sequence. Fergus also seems to have both of his hands, which is also a change from the reality Claire knows.
The Beatles and Ringo Starr
We get several Beatles references within this episode. First, it’s part of dinner conversation during Claire’s dissociation dream. Then, we hear Wendigo Donner use it as a way to confirm that Claire is from the 20th century. He asks her who Ringo Starr is (interesting choice of Beatle), and she tells him that he is a drummer.
The Plaid Blanket
The scene that sees Claire wrapped up in Jamie’s blanket after Jamie has rescued her from Lionel Brown is a call back to the scene in the Outlander pilot that sees Claire wrapped up in Jamie’s blanket after he has rescued her from Jack Randall.

*Willow and Tara's room. Willow and Tara sit on the bed side-by-side; Nigel stands before them with a notebook ready to interview them*
WILLOW: “Questions, great.”
TARA: “Well, we can answer questions.”
NIGEL: “Good. I need to know a little bit more about the Slayer, and about the both of you. Your relationship, whatever you can tell me.”
TARA: “O-o-our relationship?”
WILLOW: “We're friends.”
TARA: “Good friends.”
WILLOW: “Girlfriends, actually.”
TARA: “Yes, we're girlfriends.”
WILLOW: “We're in love. We're... lovers.
*Puts hand on Tara's knee*
Lesbian, gay-type lovers.”
NIGEL: “I meant your relationship with the Slayer.”
*Both girls look embarrassed. Willow removes her hand from Tara's knee*
TARA: “Um, just good friends.”
Let me just say how absolutely groundbreaking I think it is that the characters were actually able to confirm their romantic/sexual relationship to Nigel in explicit, leaves-absolutely-no-doubt-whatsoever terms. There is a similar scene in an episode of ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ where Xena and Gabrielle get interviewed on video camera, and are specifically asked (by a guy called Nigel as well, funnily enough) whether they are lovers. He only leaves them with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. But the filming is conveniently disturbed by “technical difficulties” in that the camera has a fault and the screen goes all fuzzy. And so you never actually get to hear what they answered with even though they did answer the question. This was done to mess with the fanbase, who shipped Xena and Gabrielle as a couple, in a fun ‘are they or aren't they’ way. It was actually never confirmed by the characters in dialogue whether the nature of their relationship was more than just friendship because the show creators could not do it without the network (NBC Universal) reprimanding them for it. They were severely censored in writing a WLW relationship between the two main leads of the show - but it never stopped them from writing it in an as-close-as-possible to main-text way because they honestly wanted it to be just as much as the sub-texter fans did. They didn’t just accept the fans shipping Xena and Gabrielle as a couple. They encouraged it. They catered to their LGBTQ audience over their straight one. That was something that rarely ever happens when it’s not allowed to be canon. In fact, I can only think of it happening twice in all of TV. That with 'Xena: Warrior Princess' and with 'The Legend Of Korra'. As far my awareness goes... any other TV show where there was an LGBTQ audience shipping two same-sex main characters together... the creators outright denied the fans any LGBTQ representation whatsoever that wasn’t used as a queer-baiting tactic to keep the ratings high and some even ridiculed them for it. A la 'Supergirl'.
So all that being said - the scene in ‘Checkpoint’ where Willow emphatically states that her and Tara are “lesbian gay-type lovers” is a groundbreaking declaration that serves to give huge validation to the LGBTQ, and specifically WLW, audience. Especially given this episode was filmed and aired in 2001. This is the same year as the episode where Xena and Gabrielle get interviewed was filmed and aired. And they couldn’t go there. Couldn’t do what ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ achieved. Couldn’t confirm a romantic/sexual relationship between two same-sex characters on TV. The scene from ‘Checkpoint’ stands out for being as groundbreaking as the Willow/Tara kiss from ‘The Body’, or the Willow/Kennedy sex scene from ‘Touched’, or the “mouth-to-mouth water transfer” kiss from ‘A Friend In Need Part 2’ in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ is. It really is incredibly groundbreaking that they were able to film and air this in 2001.
A TM FB ground asked ‘’What do you love about fen’’ I had a lot to say...
Alright, so I am procrastinating to do something else so let me write why I love fen.
Something Brittany said as she was saying goodbye to her character was how Fen was born to be a side character and became a hero. I remember starting to cry after hearing that because this is exactly why I adore her.
I had an abusive relationship where the guy didn't even realize how abusive he was and destroyed the little self-confidence I had build in myself after years of bullying and not being smart enough in math for my high school. And then I decided to stop dating and rebuild myself and it is by mistake that I fell in love with my husband (We both didn't want to date, the irony) and when he introduced me to The Magicians he told me I’d associate with Fen. Most likely because I’d love her kindness and princess-y vibe. What he didn't expect is that I loved her for so much more than that
Fen comes from a world that doesn't value women the same as men. In a world where her father refuses to show her how to make magical blades because she was a girl . And yet, she learns how to use them and how to sharpen them with whetstone, despite not what a woman should do. She learned her father’s craft enough that she was able to appreciate a good blade (The couple’s torture device) or even know the difference between a blade cut vs an animal one (S03E02)
Fen was raised with the only goal to be a wife; one day it might happen that a stranger comes at their door and she will have to marry him without even saying anything, so her family could rise in the rank of Fillorian royalty. And arrive, Eliot who married her, thinking he would die and not to have to handle her, so when he came back alive she had to manage to be newlywed to a self-destructive man.
Tick never valued her or the pesant, we see her face when he get means to the FU fighter, and I am sure it is not the only side remark Tick has done toward her; she was never one of the ‘’royalty’’.
One of their first conversation in the castle is how she wants to be obedient to him. which means she was told to be so, and probably that her job was also to produce an heir. Her job was to be the quiet wife of the High King and provide lineage. But that is not what happens. Despite Eliot saying he wanted her to be his equal, it took nearly 4 seasons for him to do so. He dismissed her, never told her when he left or what would happen and only truly cared when she was in danger or taken over by the fairy. Fen only knew what she had to do: be a wife and give a baby . But Eliot was not attracted to her and would never love her and Margo gave her baby away.
So this leads us to her breakdown. Margo and Eliot clearly didn’t know what to do with her because they let her be in a psychosis where she was carrying a log as a baby, but losing her baby to the fairies was Fen's last straw. I think she was starting to accept that Eliot would never love her and that she might be able to help Fillory by staying with Eliot (’’You think I stay because of how deeply attracted to me you are. I love Fillory. It is my home’’ - S02E06) and losing her baby, the one thing she knew she could provide, was just too much; everything she was told to be and do she could not.
This is why Margo giving her the crown as an Acting King in the end of S03 is HUGE. Not only she became the first crowned Fillorian (Tick never wore it) but it was also a sign for Margo to recognized that during season 3, she was learning how to heal and becoming her own person. Not Eliot's wife, but fen. There is this amazing moment where Fen says to Eliot that she can’t go to her old life and they are stuck together. This is both of them admiring their marriage will never work, but they promised to care for one another and they will. At least, they try. They do.
If Julia showed Fen that healing of trauma is complicated but does not mean going toward a darker you, Margo showed Fen how to be her own voice. Not to be Eliot’s wife or Margo’s confidente, but Fen. Margo even let her lead the quest and make her own mistake before saving her from fraud (S04E08) because Margo knows that she would stay naive if she is never given the chance to do something on her own. Even more, when Margo learns that Fen wants to overthrow her, she trusts and know her enough that this is not a back-stabbing move but something bigger, and she accepts her fate in order to save Eliot, but also making sure Fen will be safe (’’I curse you Fen! But be nice to her!’’ S04E09) Fen will try to lead like Margo leads, being daring and trying to use her power to help; this is how her and Josh discover The Secret Sea in the castle after all.
But then she gets abandoned in the past and learns that Margo had given up on saving her and even tried to kill her in the heat of a battle. While part of it could be forgiven (margo was wolfing hard let's be real) That is when Fen stop seeing Margo on a pedestal. (S05E03) She discovers that Margo, much like Eliot, has severe flaws. This doesn't mean that she will stop caring about her, but that she will be able to have her own voice when talking to her.
Season 5, now having a voice, she had to struggle just like Kady not to be the one in the background that nobody listens. If more than once she is ignored and that some of them are just cruel for no apparent reason when they need her she decide to say no. To call their bullshit and say that they would try harder to save Earth if it was happening on their planet. Eliot teaches her then what it means to have a voice and to be a hero; sometimes there is no perfect solution, just two choices and you take the less shitty. She learns there that having a voice is to listen to what other say and then put your own knowledge into the group instead of trying to do like Margo and stump on everyone with her idea. (S05E11) We see her during the heist episode, she use herself being FIllorian to insure her friend security (S05E12) and this confidence was totally new for Fen. I don't think she would have been able to put her life on the line without what Eliot had told her before).
Lastly, Fen wanted to be a mom. Losing her baby will be a trauma she will have to live with forever. But it is beautiful that, in a sense, she carried Fillory within her (i Mean literally) until it was ready to be hatched. (S05E12-13) FIllory 2.0 is her baby, she will be forever the mother of the land, forever linked with the history of the one place she loved and defended from the moment we met her.
I love fen for all those reasons. Because sometimes, rebuilding yourself after trauma is messy and full of mistakes. But when you are ready to listen to your friends, to forgive and to stand up for what you believe, you can become a version of yourself nobody ever believes you could ever be. I am pretty sure if she’d go back to her dad, he would not recognize his daughter. This proud and self assured woman who, despite her trauma, seek to find good and kindness in people, try to forgive those who hurt her and also, fucking put fillory in her vagina.
1) the proposal in s05e12. it has one of my favorite Winger speeches, both of them looking gorgeous, a beautiful kiss, and an unexpected amount of emotion and depth. no matter how many times I hear “let’s get out of here and never look back”, I start crying like a baby.
2) s01e13 when Britta sees Jeff holding hands with Slater and is so Shook™ that she can’t finish her tap routine. and then when he gives her flowers afterwards I- 🥺🥺
3) when Jeff looks across the room at her in s05e07 as she’s delivering a speech about being yourself and he just has this look on his face like “shit. I’m so in love with her, I’m so screwed”.
4) their conversation on the couch during s01e15 where they talk about having kids.
5) when in s02e06, we see Jeff helping her drink, eat, and do whatever else she needs to do because she can’t do it herself with the dinosaur costume. it’s more of a little detail, but it’s so adorable that Jeff’s like “we’re not dating. what we are doing is not dating. here sweetie, let me follow you around all night and hold your cup as you sip from it :D!! let me feed you :D!! do you need me to get that door for you :D??” like I just think it’s so cute that he’s playing it cool but doting over Britta until the zombies show up.
honorable mention: not strictly a j/b moment, but when they’re making out in the car during a scary story in s03e07 and the “that’s just the sound of my heart, baby”. I can’t remember clearly rn so correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Britta is the one telling it, which means she pictures the main characters as her and Jeff. that concept just makes me 🥺🥺
They are in chronological order, from season 1 (2005) to season 11 (2018), not of preference, two parters are counted as one episode. (edit: I had forgotten about “Midnight, so there are 26 now instead of 25, ops?)
★ S01E06 "Dalek" this episode really made me love the 9th doctor, Christopher performance was fantastic, I wish they had given him more time on the show so that we could have seen more of that rage.
★ S01E09-10 "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances", this will be no surprise to anyone because it's a fan favourite of almost everyone, but that's because it's such a well written episode, creepy and intriguing, original and with a beautiful and heartwarming ending. That "For once everybody lives" always makes me tear up a bit.
★S01E12-13 "Bad Wolf/The Parting of Ways", RTD has always had beautiful endings and this surely is one, emotional and beautiful, but also funny at times. The final part where Rose looked into the TARDIS and her interactions with the Daleks was badass as fuck, and her interaction with the Doctor was beautiful. And let's not talk about "You were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And you know what? So was I!"
★ S02E08-09 "The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit", this is such an underrated episode but a brilliant one. It's scary and it always keeps you on your toes because you don't know what's going to happen. I didn't appreciate it enough the first time I saw, only when I rewatched it I realized how good it was.
★S02E12-13 "Army of Ghosts/Doomsday", of course this is going to be on the list, Rose was my first companion and seeing her go was a devastating experience that I can't forget. I remember seeing this episode for the first time and crying like a baby just during the initial monologue "[...] But then came the Army of Ghosts. Then came Torchwood and the war. That's when it all ended. This is the story of how I died." Still crying over this. And let's not talk about the wall scene. You know which one.
★S03E01 "Smith and Jones", when I first watched season 3 I didn't appreciate it enough because I was mourning Rose's departure and couldn't get over it, however, when I rewatched it, I finally was able to appreciate this season because it's a really good season. I know this episode is an odd choice, not a lot of people talk about this specific episode, but I think it's a really good episode, really enjoyable, but not too heavy, and Martha in this episode is absolutely brilliant, we can see just how smart and brave and smart and smart she really is.
★ S03E08-09 "Human Nature/The Family of Blood", this is another really popular and loved episode by the fandom, and again, there is a really good reason. This episode it's fun but also emotional, it's really original and super intriguing. And of course we can't forget to mention the "fury of a time lord", that scene where he punishes the family of blood is just perfect. Loved it.
★ S03E12-13 "The sound of Drums/Last of the time lords", as I said, RTD finales are absolutely brilliant, and this, like the others, is brilliant too. It shows what a complete badass Martha is, traveling the world all alone because she is a woman on a mission. I didn't really like how the doctor got back to normal, but let's not think about it too much. My favourite scene ever, that gave me the chills is when Martha finds out what's inside those robots, it still gives me chills every time I see that scene.
★S04e08-09 "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead", again, this is a really predictable episode, but it is a beautiful two parter. The villain is brilliant and super scary, the whole concept of the episode is brilliant and it's executed perfectly, and we are also introduced to River, for whom we are sad when she dies the first time we see it but it's so much better when you rewatch the episode after having watched all the other episodes with her, including The husband of River Song, which take place right after this episode.
★ S04E10 "Midnight" do I even have to explain why this episode, which is loved by everyone, is in this list? I don't think so.
★ S04E11 "Turn Left", this episode is criminally underrated. I LOVE this episode with all of my heart. When people talk about Blink, they praise it because it was brilliant even tho the doctor wasn't even in it, well this is brilliant and the doctor isn't in it. This episode is so devastating to watch trough the eyes of a human, the devastation and pain that is caused by the fact that the doctor is not there to save earth is just, you know, devastating. I don't know how to explain how much I love this episode.
★ S04E12-13 "The stolen earth/Journey's end" another beautiful finale from RDT. Not only because it's a beautiful episode but also because we got EVERYONE in this episode, Rose, Jack, Martha, Sarah Jane, Donna, Micky, Jakie literally everyone was there, and it was just beautiful to finally see again some old friends.
★ S05E01 "The Eleventh Hour" this was a perfect introduction to the new doctor, we needed something strong that could make us like him after loosing Tennant, someone that everyone loved, and this episode did it. Matt did and incredible job in this episode, which introduces to Amy and Rory, the crack in time and space and the new doctor. I loved the episode and 11 speech was just phenomenal, really made me like him instantly.
★ S05E02 "The beast below", I guess this can be considered an odd choice, because I never hear anyone talk about this specific episode, but I loved it, it was fun and it also showed us a bit more about the doctor, how he is, what's his moral compass like, how he acts and reacts to things, and also we learned more about Amy. The plot was really interesting and cool, at time a bit creepy but also really sad because of what happened to that whale-thing.
★S05E04-05 "The time of angels/Flesh and stone", I actually have no clue of how people feel about this episode, but I personally really loved them, we got the angels, the crack in time and space, cool moments with River, Amy and the doctor, it was exciting and it was cool, but also a bit emotional at times.
★S05E12-13 "The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang" Moffat showed us that he could make a good finale too. I really loved this finale, it's so exciting and it ties a lot of ends together, which is always cool to see it happen. The Pandorica speech is one of my favourite moments ever and also we got Rory back. Really awesome ending that didn't leave you underwhelmed and it was completely satisfying.
★ S06E01-02 "The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon" is one, if not the best opener ever. It just keeps you hooked and excited, not only for these two episodes, but for the whole season. The episode literally starts with the death of the doctor, and then it introduced a new and cool villain that is the Silence.
★S06E04 "The doctor's wife" is one of the best episodes ever, it has a cool and we'll executed concept, it's really emotional but also cool as hell? And it also has one of my favourite quotes ever "Fear me I've killed hundreds of time lords" "Fear me, I've killed all of them".
★ S06E07 "A Good Man Goes To War" is just PERFECT, the plot twist were brilliant, they left me speechless, I cry and laughed and I just loved the episode. Bonus points because in this episode Rory was a complete badass. It has my favourite doctor who quote of all times
"Demons run when a good man goes to war
Night will fall and drown the sun
When a good man goes to war
Friendship dies and true love lies
Night will fall and the dark will rise
When a good man goes to war
Demons run, but count the cost
The battle's won, but the child is lost"
★ S06E08 "Let's Kill Hitler", from what I saw people don't really love this episode, but I absolutely did love it and this is my list, so here it is.
★S06E10 "The Girl Who Waited" this episode was really devastating but so so beautiful, this is another fan favourite, at least it was before, I haven't heard a lot people talk about it recently. But again, there is a good reason if it is so loved.
★ S06E11 "The God Complex" surprisingly I haven't seen anyone ever talk about this episode even though it absolutely brilliant and spectacular. It's not a really heavy episode, but heavy enough. It's also a bit of a strange episode, but not in a bad way.
★ The day of the doctor/The time of the doctor
★ S08E05 "Time Heist" this is not a really popular episode and I saw a lot of people say that they didn't like it, however I did, probably because I'm a slut for heist movies and this episode combined two things that I love, Doctor Who and Heist Movies.
★ S08E08 "Mummy on the Orient Express", this episode really blew me out of the way, it was just brilliant. I don't even know what to say, it just was.
★ S09E11 "Heaven Sent" (I know I said that two parters would count as one episode but I HATED Hell Bent, I'm not going to get into why or it'll take to long) This episode was probably one the best doctor who episodes ever , the acting was phenomenal, Capaldi is just great, and the plot and dialogue and monologue and plot twist and everything. Even if you don't like doctor who this is episode is great. It has my favourite quote:
"As you come into this world, something else is also born.
You begin your life, and it begins a journey towards you. It moves slowly, but it never stops.
Wherever you go, whatever path you take, it will follow me. Never faster, never slower, always coming.
You will run. It will walk.
You will rest. It will not
One day, you will linger in the same place too long. You will sit too still or sleep too deep, and when, too late, you raise to go, you will notice a second shadow next to yours. Your life will then be over."
★ S10E11 "World Enough And Time" (In this case I did like episode 12 but it wasn't good enough to make it into the list) This episode left me speechless, I really wasn't expecting this episode to be that good. Absolutely loved this episode, it was brilliant.
I actually like the next bit, but then, I’m a mean person.
Donna tries to go toe-to-toe with Faye, asserting that she and Harvey actually serve the firm’s best interests by being a couple, because they balance each other. Faye says that’s irrelevant, and Donna retorts that this is personal for Faye because she and Harvey remind her of herself and her ex-husband. This may or may not be the case, but either way, Faye shuts that shit right down: “This is a conflict of interest, and I will not be cajoled, threatened, or coerced into thinking it’s not.” My hero.
Up next is Harvey’s one-on-one with Donna’s father. They’re laughing along to some story about Donna being a competitive skier before she got into theater until Harvey gets back to business with the acknowledgment that James has some concerns about him that Harvey’s “taken some steps to alleviate.” James appreciates Harvey meeting him “man to man,” but things take a turn for the worse when Harvey explains that he pulled some strings to get the money James needs for the deal he’s in town to settle, and James accuses him of digging into his business and trying to buy his approval.
Hold the fucking phone.
James’s last and only other appearance in this series thus far was in “Live to Fight” (s05e12), in which it’s revealed that when Donna was a child, he lost all their family’s money on a real estate gamble, and after Donna started working for Harvey, he asked her to get Harvey to give him a loan for $250,000, which Harvey refused. Donna proposed to give her father access to her 401(k) until Harvey threatened to tie up his legal proceedings for the next 20 years, after which point James declared his intentions to commit bank fraud by illegally inflating his assets and disappeared into the night. And now he’s getting on Harvey’s case for trying to help him with a business deal that’s apparently going very badly? Sounds to me like Harvey is very much looking out for Donna’s best interests by trying to keep this asshole in the black so he won’t be tempted to commit another federal crime! “Treat my daughter better than you treat me,” get out of here with that shit, you shyster.
Also Katrina refuses to modify the code of conduct for Louis because it’s precisely that sort of thing that got them “saddled with Faye in the first place,” so, good call there.
More fill-in-the-blanks for Alex and the Masterson case; eight years ago, Bratton heavily implied that he would have Alex’s family hurt or killed if he exposed the conspiracy, which I guess is a decent enough reason to not do that, but now in the present day, Rosalie wants her revenge. She goes to Samantha for help and Samantha agrees to help her “find something on this guy”; I’m not sure if they’re talking about Bratton or Craig, but it doesn’t really matter.
Donna found out about Harvey’s meeting with her father and is none too pleased about it, accusing him of “making it clear to him that [Harvey thinks] he’s a bad businessman,” which, yes, hi, bank fraud. She then projects the fuck out of her anger at Faye by expressing her fear that Harvey thinks he’s better than her, which of course Harvey vehemently denies, and Donna finally tells him about Faye’s sine qua non for them to both keep their jobs. (Funny that she says “one of [them] has to give up their vote, and that one of [them] is [her],” when Faye was pretty clear that it could be either of them making the sacrifice.) She then lets slip an interesting detail: She didn’t tell him about it right away because she didn’t want to hear him say that his vote is more important than hers. I’ve already established that I think that’s true, but I wonder if this is a case of Donna agreeing with me—she knows it but doesn’t want to hear it out loud—or she thinks it’s not true but she doesn’t trust Harvey. But yeah, no, the firm is stronger because they’re a couple, for sure.
Then Louis comes in to argue, again, that they need to get rid of Faye, this time because “she’s turned Katrina against [him],” and Harvey argues right back that they have to use their limited amount of leverage wisely (what leverage) and the “bigger fish” at the moment is getting Donna her vote back. Louis yells that it’s unfair the battle they’re choosing is Harvey’s, especially since it’s Harvey’s fault Faye is there in the first place since this goes all the way back to Harvey hiring Mike; there’s a lot of shouting, and Donna tries to play the voice of reason by insisting that it’s not worth it to be at each other’s throats over Faye because she won’t be there forever. Louis goes to the bullpen to pout (or, uh, reminisce) and Harvey goes to forgive him for blaming him, acknowledging that he was disrespecting Louis, which he knows because Donna accused him of doing the same to her father, and I’m only this saying this one more time, James Paulsen lost his family’s finances on a bad business deal and committed bank fraud to save himself after Harvey stopped him from pilfering his daughter’s 401(k).
ANYWAY.
Final flashback (finally)! Eight years ago, Alex repeatedly tried to give Craig a consolation gift after Bratton gave Alex the Masterson account (for blackmail reasons) but since Alex wouldn’t tell him why he wouldn’t share Masterson, Craig started holding a grudge, so that’s what that’s about. In the present, Alex asks Samantha what Rosalie’s plan is and further asks her to let him fix everything instead, so that’s sweet, I guess, that they’re trying to protect each other, but you know what might work better is if they talked to each other and worked together. Then Harvey shows up with some incredibly clumsy dialogue to fill them in on recent events (“Harvey, what’s going on?” “A lot of things, some of which you know, some of which you don’t. But I’m gonna tell you what they are, and then tomorrow morning we’re gonna put a stop to them.”) and…that’s that? Oh, Louis apologizes to Katrina but asks her to put something else in the code of conduct and “ram it down [Faye’s] throat” rather than try to slip it past her, so that's…colorful.
Alright, I know this next scene is supposed to be very badass, what with the rock music and the power walking and the slow motion effect, but my god it looks so stupid. I mean come on, they’re in slow motion. There’s rock music. Seriously, all that’s missing is a massive explosion in the background. Harvey, Louis, Alex, and Samantha storm Faye’s office and declare that they’re a united front, they trust each other, they’re not hanging Donna out to dry, blah blah whatever. It seems that the addition Louis asked Katrina to make to the code of conduct is a blanket waiver of conflict? Boy, that is…optimistic, but they are boxing themselves into a tiny, tiny corner there. Then they all threaten to resign if she doesn’t start treating them with respect, and points for aiming high, but she’s threatened to fire them and close the firm before; the first thing she said to Louis, right after she arrived, was that if he didn’t hand over control of the firm, she’d have them all suspended from the bar for six months, and in “Special Master” (s09e02), they asked what would happen if they didn’t follow her rules and she said, quote, “You mean if you continue to cross lines? Then you’ll be fired.” Why do they think this is going to be an effective tactic? If I was in her position, I think I’d just be like, “Yeah, okay, good luck in the jobs market with this dumpster fire on your résumé.”
The first example of really open communication so far this episode does unfortunately come with a little bit of a damper on it, and not just the fact that there are only about eight minutes left: Faye asks Gretchen if she told Donna about her divorce, because it was “very painful to have that thrown in [her] face” (she does have a heart!), but as a result of that bullshit the Power Rangers just pulled with their conflict waiver, she’s decided to return Donna’s vote because “maybe [they] all have things [they] can learn from each other.” Oh, Faye. You were doing so well.
Deus ex machina alert: Samantha has…something on Craig that persuades him to finish the Panasonic deal sans blackmail to avoid “mutually assured destruction” (based on what), so that’s convenient. Then Harvey meets with James again, at Harvey’s place this time, to apologize for disrespecting him, James says Harvey and Donna sound like him and Donna’s mother, Harvey says James has an amazing marriage, and this is so much cheap talk without any supporting demonstration that I can’t take any of it seriously at all.
Back in “Stalking Horse” (s08e15), Donna asks her mother if she regrets giving James the money for that business deal that didn’t work out; her mother says no, because how could she have known it would fail, and Donna says, with no clarification, that he’d let her down before (quite a shift from her early assertion in “Live to Fight” that “[her] father has never done anything wrong in his life”). Her mother says he never let her down in ways that matter, but between her claim that James is the “kindest, gentlest, most loving man [she’s] ever met” and his literal attempt to save himself from financial ruin by taking custody of his daughter’s retirement account, I’m starting to wonder if self-delusion isn’t something of a habit in the Paulsen household. And what about that much older daughter who emotionally manipulates all of her romantic partners?
In any event, James admits that he might’ve overreacted (you think?) and also that he’s still having trouble with his business deal and if Harvey could help him out that would be great, and seriously, I have less than no respect for this man.
Rosalie approaches Samantha to thank her for taking care of things with Craig, Samantha thanks her for welcoming her into their home, Alex invites her over to play “a late-night game of Settlers of Catan,” they call her family, it’s all very cute, and then.
And then.
Donna is leaving Rachel a message (more Mike Ross priming, I guess) when Harvey comes in and delightedly brags that her dad loves him, but holy shit character development, he goes on to say that while he knows he needs to share when he disagrees with her, “if [they’re] gonna make this work, [she needs] to come to [him] when something is wrong in [her] life.” Brace yourself, every fic writer who’s ever spent hours agonizing over how to do a proposal scene just right, because I am here to tell you that your efforts are not only good enough, they’re probably too good for mainstream television, because here’s your competition:
“Wait a second. What do you mean ‘if’ this is gonna work?”
“Donna, you know we’re gonna be together forever, right?”
“Well, not if that’s how you’re gonna ask me.”
“Doesn’t matter how I ask you.”
“Why not?”
“Because we both know however I ask it won’t be exactly the way you would have instructed me to ask, so might as well ask you any way I want.”
“Well— That— I—”
“Go ahead.”
“Okay—”
“Keep stumbling. That’s only the second time I’ve ever seen you at a loss for words.”
“So, we’re engaged, then?”
“Well, I— No, it’s—”
“Look who’s stumbling now.”
What. The fuck.
What…the fuck.
Harvey actually says “Sweet baby Jesus” when he sees his mom is calling (that’s a real thing he says, with words from his mouth), she asks how things went with Donna’s dad, he says it went great, he “introduces” her to Donna (over the phone, no video chat), and Donna grabs the phone to tell her “what [her] son just tried to pull off.” Lily is “all ears,” and…fade to black.

Kevin Cage of @spotlightsaga reviews... Orange is the New Black (S05E12) Tattoo You Airdate: June 9, 2017 @oitnb Ratings: @netflix original Score: 8.5/10 ***********SPOILERS BELOW*********** This is it... It's all about to go down. The writers have done the best they can to pad what is surely to be an inevitable fall onto a hard concrete slab or 'told ya so' realness. What really kills me is that we are seeing all these epiphanies and personal revelations come to light in the penultimate moment where everything is about to change. Piper and Alex (Laura Prepon) have been mainly an afterthought throughout the entirety of S5, and that's ok. They've had their time to shine and it's been great to see others step up and fill that revolving, main character role, not just throughout this season but through others as well. But here we are back inside a bottleneck moment where we've been waiting for Pipes (Taylor Schilling) to truly embrace Alex and distance herself from what other people think, what society thinks, what she thinks she's supposed to do in life and just do what she feels right for her. She's going with her gut and her proposal to Alex was so incredibly sweet, so endearing... That I just have this terrible feeling that it's also going to be bittersweet, because this isn't exactly a tv series known for its happy endings. 'Tattoo You' ends on the exact moment that Taystee realizes that it's over... Everything they've worked for has fallen apart. She's going to the door and shouting 'Wait'... How ironic is that? It's too late, boo... Taystee (Danielle Brooks) has already made herself the face of the riot, the lead negotiator... And as much anger as I was harboring towards Gloria (Selenis Leyva) for risking everything to attempt to see her son... It was always a pipe dream that was never going to happen, and even if it did, it wouldn't change the future. That's why I had been so frustrated with Gloria. She of all people is much too smart and much too wise to be acting on her raw emotion like that. As much as I would like to see Maria Ruiz (Jessica Pimentel) redeem herself, as we know deep down she's a good woman... Here she is, once again, taking a situation and blowing it out of the water. And for what? It wasn't even Maria who had been in contact with anyone. She straight stole Gloria's thunder right from underneath her nose... And she was just expecting someone to hand her a promise, a Medal of Honor, a gift of gratitude? Now Maria, I expect this from... So I guess it's fitting that it ended up being her that freed the hostages and not Gloria. I guess being upset at any of these characters in the prison, at this point, is completely irrelevant. It doesn't matter. If Maria hadn't done it... Gloria would have. It's not even like Taystee was never going to get justice... Not for the inmates, not for Poussey, not for the people that loved her, and certainly not for herself. That sinking feeling when you round that first turn on a roller coaster and start taking that first huge dip, that feeling it etched into my body and I feel like I'm on a horrific freefall, we're about to take a massive loop, and my safety harness has just flown open. I'm preparing myself for the absolute worst. What if something happens to Lorna (Yael Stone)? After everything we saw Nicky (Natasha Lyonne) do for her by calling Vinnie (John Magaro) and laying out the truth for him... All of it now just feels too good to be true. Pensatucky is in the guard house and has found that gun... What if something happens to her? It seems, with the exception of S3, every season ends on a major death or tragic event... And I'm just not ready. Whatever it is, I don't know if I can watch it. How do we even press on from here? OITNB5 has been very much an experimental season for the writers, actors, creators, directors, producers, and everyone involved in this show. They've taken some bold and completely unexpected creative chances... And while they haven't always worked, it's been a pleasure to watch these characters, some who we've come to know and love through good and bad since the very beginning, some coming to the forefront for the very first time. I don't think anything can happen that will push my love of S4 down below any season of OITNB... For now that will always be the most emotionally effective season for me to date. OITNB is never perfect, but that's part of the charm... And now we're at this huge penultimate episode and everyone is making amends and coming to terms with their realities, I just don't think that I can stand to see what happens next. Whatever the consequences are for this riot, and it's subsequent takeover... One thing is for sure... We will feel it too. Everyone ok that screen from inside the prison, to the protestors outside, to MCC, to Linda in Purchasing (Beth Dover), to Caputo, to Fig, and to everyone watching at home... Its about to get REAL.
