Thursday,  20   July,  2023.......... Warmup..........Power Snatch.... 12  Minute AMRAP......Triceps  Extensions.
How many times do I start off the blog remarking how we were blessed with a tiny window in the weather so we can workout??  It happens so often that even old Joe, who is oblivious to all things other than birds, has noticed our good luck with the weather.  Well, the thunderstorms moved away around 3 PM, I blew the water off the mats, and we were all set.

Notes:
The post workout picnic table wine and snack celebration was fantastic.  I recall making a comment last week about people drinking but not bringing.  I musta struck a nerve, because we had a lot more people bringing in wine than we had drinking it.  A few people toted in wine and they don’t even drink.  We consumed a lot...like 10 bottles....and still have several bottles untouched, left at the Barn.
Food & snacks were far too many for me to remember who brought what.  An abundance, more than we could eat, more than even Herb could eat.  For political reasons I must highlight the large platter of meatballs with red sauce that were delicious.  Miss Linda made them.  There was chicken salad, pizza in a biscuit (?),  pizza on an English muffin(?),  chips and dips, several home-made cookies, and don’t forget the pickled okra.  Plus Plus Plus.
Please don’t bring any more cases of water for a week or so.  We have tons.
Herb will celebrate his 68th birthday in Florida this weekend.  I’m sorry he will not be here to help us honor him.
CrossFit’s Founder will also celebrate a birthday this weekend.  Coach Glassman’s 67th birthday will be Saturday the 22nd.
Saturday at 0730 and 0930.

Tennessee: 2022 Orange Bowl Champions
Tumblr media
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The sixth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers emphatically punctuated a memorable 2022 campaign on Friday night with a New Year's Six bowl victory, taking down No. 7 Clemson 31-14 in the Capital One Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium.
In his second year at the helm of Tennessee football, head coach Josh Heupel guided the Vols (11-2) to their first 11-win season since 2001. Friday's result marked Tennessee's first victory in a "New Year's Six" bowl game (2014-pres.) and first win in the Orange Bowl since defeating Oklahoma in 1939.
Playing 80 miles from his hometown of Pahokee, Florida, quarterback Joe Milton III shined under the bright lights in his fourth start for the Vols. The redshirt senior completed 19-of-28 passes for 251 yards and a career-high tying three touchdowns with no interceptions, and he was named the 2022 Capital One Orange Bowl Most Valuable Player.
Sophomore running back Jaylen Wright led the Vols in the ground game with a game-high 89 yards on 11 carries, while junior Jabari Small toted 13 rushes for 38 yards and his 13th touchdown of the season. The Volunteer receiving corps was paced by freshman slot receiver Squirrel White who cracked the century mark for the second time this season, finishing with a season-high nine catches for 108 yards and a touchdown.
Tennessee's defense reigned supreme in the battle between top-10 squads, and the Vols were led by senior linebacker Aaron Beasley. The Franklin, Georgia, native feasted with a game-high 12 tackles, career-high four tackles for loss and two sacks along with one pass breakup. Redshirt senior linebacker Solon Page III ended his career with a career-best effort, logging 10 tackles to rank second on the team.
The UT secondary got the job done on the back end, with junior defensive backs Tamarion McDonald and Wesley Walker posting one interception each and Doneiko Slaughter logging a career-high three pass breakups.
Tennessee grabbed momentum early after forcing a turnover on downs in the first quarter, halting Clemson's nine-play, 53-yard drive when redshirt junior cornerback Kamal Hadden and Page combined for a stop on a fake field goal rush. The duo stuffed holder Drew Swinney for a two-yard gain on fourth-and-4 to set up a scoring drive for the Big Orange.
Milton orchestrated an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown series off the turnover, culminating with a 16-yard scoring strike to redshirt junior wideout Bru McCoy who made a strong, two-handed grab on contact in the back of the end zone. Redshirt senior Chase McGrath knocked through his 67th PAT of the year, breaking his own school record from last season to give the Vols a 7-0 edge with 5:17 left in the opening stanza.
The Tigers (11-3) had three chances at points early in the first half but were unable to capitalize after three consecutive missed field goals by senior placekicker B.T. Potter. His 55-yard attempt with 3:05 remaining in the first quarter fell harmlessly wide right and short of the goal post before a 49-yard try with 14:08 left in the second quarter was also pushed wide right. His third kick came from 42 yards and sailed just left of the goal posts, keeping Tennessee's seven-point lead intact with 10:15 to go in the half.
Tennessee quickly doubled its lead after the third kicking miscue, using 1:12 of game clock for a five-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to go ahead by 14 with 9:03 left in the second period. Milton completed four-straight passes on the drive, including a 50-yard deep ball to White that set up junior running back Jabari Small's two-yard scoring plunge.
Small improved his season total to 13 rushing touchdowns, moving into a tie for sixth in UT single-season history. His 13 scores on the ground are the most by a Vol since Montario Hardesty also had a baker's dozen in 2009.
Potter got Clemson on the board with 5:11 left in the first half, hooking his fourth field goal try of the night from 31 yards just inside the left post. Neither side scored for the rest of the period, and the Vols headed to the halftime locker room with a 14-3 lead over the Tigers.
After receiving the kickoff out of halftime, the Tigers doubled their point total when Potter's 40-yard field goal sailed between the uprights with 10:57 remaining in the third quarter. The kick capped a methodical, 10-play, 45-yard drive for Clemson to cut its deficit to eight points, 14-6.
Tennessee's offense stalled on the next two drives before Clemson marched into Volunteer territory. The Big Orange defense held up once again when linebackers Beasley and Juwan Mitchell stopped Tiger running back Will Shipley on fourth-and-2 to force the game's second turnover on downs with 1:27 left in the third.
The UT offense responded with another quick touchdown series, going 70 yards in four plays in 1:22 of game time. Wright broke off runs of nine, 42 and five yards before Milton's second touchdown toss found White in the middle of the checkerboard-painted endzone. The 14-yard throw vaulted Tennessee's lead to 21-6 with five seconds remaining in the third.
Clemson quickly narrowed the deficit with its first touchdown of the night when quarterback Cade Klubnik ran four yards into the endzone on a read option—capping a 12-play, 71-yard drive for the Tigers. Shipley broke through the middle on the two-point conversion to make it a 21-14 Tennessee lead with 10:01 left in regulation.
Milton put the game on ice midway through the fourth quarter on the ensuing drive, connecting with Keyton on a wide open deep ball down the right sideline for a 46-yard touchdown that put Tennessee ahead by two touchdowns. McGrath's program record 70th made PAT doubled up the Vols over the Tigers, 28-14, with 8:34 left in the contest.
Tennessee's attacking, staggering defense posted the game's first takeaway on Clemson's next drive to all but seal the win as junior defensive back Tamarion McDonald leaped in the air and nabbed his third career interception. McGrath put the finishing touches on the victory, knocking his final career field goal attempt from 32 yards between the uprights for the final score, 31-14.
Clemson threatened a late touchdown when Klubnik heaved his 54th pass attempt into the endzone, but redshirt junior Wesley Walker grabbed his first career interception to leave no doubt. Three Milton kneel downs ended the game and the Vols hoisted the Orange Bowl trophy for the first time in 83 years.
The Vols finished the 2022 campaign breaking several single season records, including total points (599), points per game (46.1), total offense (6,832), yards per game (525.5) and passing touchdowns (38) while tying the record for rushing touchdowns (40).

Are your eyes dry or your vision blurry after prolonged usage of a computer, phone or tablet?
Amplify EyeCare Manhattan's Dr. Sarah Pinkhasov discusses how digital devices can result in digital eye strain and dry eye and what can you do to reduce it. You can work on blinking exercises because patients who look at computer screens or any sort of digital device tend to blink 75% less. One exercise that you can do is to look in five different directions. You will look up, down, right, left, and straight ahead. When you're looking at those positions, you just need to blink 10 times. Another blinking exercise includes exercising the eyelid muscle to ensure that it is properly activated and working. The best way to do this is to close your eyes, pause, open your eyes, close your eyes again, pause, and forcefully close them. This will make that muscle work constantly so that you can blink more normally.
If you are experiencing symptoms of digital eye strain or dry eye you can schedule an eye exam by calling at (212) 752-6930 or visiting our website https://amplifyeyecare-manhattan.com/. #eyestrain #bluelight #vision #eyecare #eyehealth #optometrist #digitaleyestrain #computervisionsyndrome #dryeye #computerglasses - Do you want to learn more about Why are your eyes tired, dry, or vision blurry after hours on a phone or computer? DeFi Tokens Defy the Dip as Ethereum Slips Below $1,300
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Defying a broader market downturn sparked by the Fed’s interest rate hike, leading decentralized finance (DeFi) tokens have posted gains over the past 24 hours.
UNI, the token behind decentralized exchange (DEX) Uniswap, is up over 8% in the past 24 hours, leading the gains among the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market cap.
At time of publication, UNI is changing hands at around $5.80, with a whopping 55% increase in trading volume to $130 million.
With a market capitalization of slightly above $4.4 billion, UNI is the 19th-largest cryptocurrency, according to data from CoinMarketCap.
Despite today’s price action, UNI is down 87% from its all-time high of $44.97 recorded in May 2021.
LDO, the token powering popular Ethereum staking platform Lido, has also gained over 6.7% in the last 24 hours and currently trades at around $1.89, per data from CoinMarketCap.
The 67th-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, LDO, is down over 80% from its historical all-time high of $11 in November 2021.
COMP, the governance token powering decentralized lending protocol Compound, posted gains of 4.5% over the day and currently trades at around $55.60, according to CoinMarketCap.
DeFi, crypto, and the Fed
The primary driver behind the crypto market’s bearish price action is the U.S Federal Reserve’s decision to hike interest rates by 0.75% (or 75 basis points) announced yesterday.
The overall market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies has dropped by 0.04% to $919.45 billion over the past 24 hours, per data from CoinMarketCap.
Leading cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum have posted significant weekly losses, with Bitcoin dropping by over 5%. Ethereum, meanwhile, dropped more than 20% over the past seven days, and is now trading at under $1,300.
Ethereum (ETH) is on a continuous downtrend following its much-anticipated merge last week. ETH’s investors saw their wealth drop by nearly 21% since the merge, according to data from CoinMarketCap.
Of the $332 million liquidated in the crypto market over the past 24 hours, Ethereum, the largest liquidated asset, accounts for over $148 million, per data from Coinglass.
Despite the broader crypto market slipping in the wake of the Fed’s rate hike, DeFi tokens are on a tear, with their total market cap up over 30% to $45.89 billion over the past day, per CoinMarketCap.
Over the past day, trading volume for DeFi tokens has also jumped over 30% to $5.4 billion.

Leeds United: Meslier, Forshaw, Cooper (Struijk 45), Summerville, Llorente (Koch 45), Sinisterra (Roca 62), Gelhardt (Rodrigo 75), Hjelde, Drameh, Greenwood (James 75), Klich.
Subs not used: Robles, Aaronson, Harrison, Kristensen. Leeds started this Carabao Cup tie with a vastly changed line up and - not surprisingly - we took a while to find our rhythm. However, we eventually took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to a superb strike from Luis Sinisterra. Ten minutes later, Sinisterra was brought down in the box, Mateusz Klich converted the penalty and it looked like the game was already all over. But in typical Leeds fashion we then conceded a sloppy goal from a Barnsley free kick and gave away a penalty just before half time, which was saved by Illan Meslier. The second half was much less eventful (apart from a brief but entertaining full scale brawl in the 67th minute), and after Klich had restored our two goal cushion it was more like a training session. We play Wolves away in the next round.

Wondering what🎁gift could possibly dazzle a beloved parent while also making them feel as happy as the day that they brought you into this world?😁⁣ ⁣ On the occasion of her mother's 67th 🎂birthday, @handiedan gave her *this* hand-cut paper collage piece layered atop two vintage ceramic plates (which, let's be honest, would make any art lover feel positively elated)! 🎈⁣ ⁣ The Dutch creative, however, kicked up the sentimentality factor a few notches by incorporating a few mother-and-daughter tokens into her collage.⁣ Nestled amid personal bits of ephemera, you can see fragments of their 🗼Paris and Berlin 🚇metro tickets from the time that they hit the wide open road together in pursuit of cool new cultural experiences.⁣ ⁣ Sure, 💎bling purchased from a store certainly has its appeal, but it really can't compare to giving someone you love a piece of handcrafted art that comes straight from the heart.❤ ⁣ ⁣ ARTWORK DETAILS:⁣ ⁣ Title: "Tetrade in Blue"⁣ Artist: @handiedan⁣ Medium: Mixed media (digital collage, hand-cut collage and vintage ceramics⁣ Dimensions: 12”.75 x 10" / 32 x 25,5 cm⁣ Date: 2020⁣ ...⁣ posted on Instagram - https://instagr.am/p/CKY6UlJrLCv/

No, your shitcoins are not likely to survive the next bear market. 72 out of top 100 coin in Dec-2017 are now out of top 100. DYOR and don't HODL blindly into hopeless projects. But there are a few gems, hard to find, but good to buy.
I just review a historical snapshot on 17/12/2017 - this is the day when BTC reached the top of the last bull run at over $19,000.
A staggering 72% of top 100 coins back then are now out of top 100. Of course looking at ranking is a relative perspective. However, even if you take market cap into account, the vast majority of these coins do not actually gain anything significant. Little upgrades, lack of funding, little innovation to keep it up with the current market needs - sending these coins into oblivion.
Top 100 back then, not now - the forgotten
18 Bitconnectttttttttttt
19 PPT (Rank 392 now, market cap dropped from $1.75B to just $99M today)
21 LSK (Rank 138 now, market cap dropped from $1.56B to just $480M today)
25 STRAT (Rank 164 now, market cap dropped from $1.11B to $349M today)

Heyyy I just found this adorable blog and wanted to ask if you had any first date headcanons for these two? Like, where would they go and what would they do?? Would it a quiet affair or would it be active? Maybe even them going to the arcade? Thanks and love you so much :3
1.
as 75% of kamishin fanfics say, one of their first date options would def be a cat cafe.
as cats are fucking awesome and one of shinsou’s favorite things. what better place to get to know someone when theyre surrounded by one of their absolute joys in life? also to find out what theyre tastes are in comfy beverages and deserts.
kaminari likes citrus and sugar and shinsou likes bitter coffee and lots of chocolate.
shinsou would be loving on all the cats and kaminari would mentally be loving on shinsou.
since its a first date, i’d imagine kaminari to be like a nervous boy ofc and so maybe since his heart is beating really fucking fast maybe his quirk would leak out a bit and thus makes everything static-y. such as cats fur. maybe his own hair elevates a bit too. shinsou’s already is.
when kaminari tries to hold shinsou’s hand he accidentally shocks him and he panics but its okay bc he’s being cute and shinsou takes it again.
kaminari hand feels tingly to him but its cute and exhilirating.
2.
oKAY AN ARCADE DATE ACTUALLY SOUNDS REALLY CUTE I LIKE THIS.
once they get their kaminari just. spends a lot of money on tokens. a lot.
shinsou’s like holy shit dude
kaminari is good at claw machine games and sucks at the shooting ones bc theres so much to pay attention to. whereas those are the games shinsou sucks at so plenty of plushies for shinsou.
kaminari swoons when shinsou hits the bell on one of those games where u hit a button with a hammer and it measures your strength.
pinball machine games get really competitive
so does DDR. theyre there half the date.
they play like 5 games of the racing games. shinsou came out victorious with 3 wins.
kaminari misses on a wack a mole game and hits shinsou and shinsou hits him back and its kind of a sword fight but with plush hammer things
shinsou actually follows the rules when it comes to those bowling games but kaminari is just like “YEET”
they get a warning when kaminari is yelling at street fighter and gets kicked out when he breaks it
they then go out for ice cream bc theyre sweaty boys
they end up holding hands but shinsou also kisses him and kaminari blows a fuse and shinsou has to call sero
“remember that time u blew a fuse”“we dont talk abt that babe”“right after our first kiss”“l i e s”
i hope these are satisfactory aasdfa
there’s a lot of possibilities for these two tbh. but these are the ones of both scales of cute, quiet and comfy then to active and competitive. and a lot of their characters would prolly come out in both and idk theyre cute. if u have other date ideas, be it first or 67th, hmu! also ily2, thank YOU for sending this ask

Sunday, September 26     Med-Ball Warmup.....Bench Press.....300 Reps and a Mile Run.
It was a positively glorious Fall day at the Barn.  We had 75 degrees in the shade, and no rain.  A lot of people were at the Titan’s game, but Robert had it available for us on his laptop.
Paul led us in a very fine session of exercises and mobility/flexibility and we highly enjoyed it.
Warmup:
Partner up and do 50 reps of various Med-Ball passes.
Five different types of Med-Ball Passes, 10 reps each.  Chest pass, overhead pass, right side pass, left side pass, underhand pass, all done to get our upper extremities prepared for the Bench Press which is next.

Notes:
Lots of chatter was heard from our nearly elite athletes regarding their plan to take it easy during this LHCF sissy WOD, so they would be able to blow it out full force in their 6224 workout in the AM.  I suspect that they really bad mouth this lowly free CrossFit workout at the Barn, especially since the coach at the Barn  is a senile old coot.
Yesterday was Manny’s 67th birthday.  He led the warmup yesterday, but no one knew it was his birthday, so he got no special love.  If Miss Linda ever disappears from my kitchen, I know where to look.  She has loved Manny for at least 30 year.
Warren A brought water.  But we still are several cases low.  Bring it.
Tuesday at 4 PM.

Tosca against violence on women at the Puccini Opera Festival
FLORENCE, ITALY – Stefania Sandrelli says her debut as opera director, a production of Tosca at this year’s Piccini Opera Festival, presents the heroine as a symbol of the fight against gender violence. The 75-year-old screen legend’s first opera production debuts in Viareggio, her hometown, on Friday in kicking off the 67th edition of the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago near Lucca. “Violence…

America’s Love of Male Trees Could Be Why You’re Sneezing Right Now 😷
More diversity in city trees would probably be a good thing. Atlas Obscura  Sabrina Imbler
One day in April 2019, the residents of Durham, North Carolina, saw the sky turn a peculiar but familiar shade of chartreuse. Enormous clouds of a fine, yellow-green powder engulfed the city. It looked, and felt, like the end of the world. “Your car was suddenly yellow, the sidewalk was yellow, the roof of your house was yellow,” says Kevin Lilley, assistant director of the city’s landscape services. Residents, quite fittingly, called it a “pollenpocalypse.”
Male trees are one of the most significant reasons why allergies have gotten so bad for citydwellers in recent decades. They’re indiscriminate, spewing their gametes in every direction. They can’t help it—it’s what evolution built them for. This is fine in the wild, where female trees trap pollen to fertilize their seeds. But urban forestry is dominated by male trees, so cities are coated in their pollen. Tom Ogren, horticulturalist and author of Allergy-Free Gardening: The Revolutionary Guide to Healthy Landscaping, was the first to link exacerbated allergies with urban planting policy, which he calls “botanical sexism.”
In trees, sex exists beyond the binary of female and male. Some, such as cedar, mulberry, and ash trees, are dioecious, meaning each plant is distinctly female or male. Others, such as oak, pine, and fig trees are monoecious, meaning they have male and female flowers on the same plant. It’s easy to identify female trees or parts—they’re the ones with seeds. And yet more, such as hazelnut and apple trees, produce “perfect” flowers that contain male and female parts within a single blossom. But while both monoecious and male dioecious trees produce pollen, Ogren claims the latter are primarily to blame for our sneezes and watery eyes.
Ogren has been talking about this botanical misogyny for over 30 years. After buying a house in San Luis Obispo with his wife, who suffers from allergies and asthma, Ogren wanted to get rid of anything on his property that might trigger an attack. He began examining the neighborhood, plant by plant, when he noticed something unusual: All the trees were male.
At first, he thought this pattern may just have been a strange quirk of one city. But when he studied frequently landscaped plants in other cities, he noticed the same thing: males, all the way down. “Right away I started realizing there was something weird going on,” he says. While tracking down the origin of this trend, Ogren stumbled upon perhaps the first trace of sexism in urban landscaping in a 1949 USDA Yearbook of Agriculture. The book advised: “When used for street plantings, only male trees should be selected, to avoid the nuisance from the seed.”
Urban forestry’s apparent sexism seems to boil down to our distaste for litter. The USDA reasoned that tiny allergenic spores are likely to be blown away by wind or washed away by rain, making pollen an easier civic task to manage than, say, overripe fruit or heavy seed pods that would need to be cleaned up by actual humans.
The preference indicated by the USDA recommendation is one element of the story—the other is something more tragic, from an arborial perspective. In the first half of the 20th century, lush, hermaphroditic, not-so-allergenic elm trees towered over many American streets. But in the 1960s, a virulent strain of Dutch elm disease, a fungal illness spread by the bark beetle, stowed away on a shipment of logs from Britain. The fungus wiped out some of American cities’ longest-lived trees and left many streets almost entirely devoid of green or shade. By 1989, an estimated 75 percent of North America’s 77 million elms were dead, according to The New York Times.
City planners and landscapers repopulated the nation’s barren, sun-scoured streets, according to USDA guidelines, with more than 100 new varieties of maple clones, Ogren says, all male. Over the years, male willow, poplar, ash, mulberry, aspen, and pepper trees joined them. As these trees matured, they shed increasing quantities of pollen. Nurseries began selling more male plants, too, in part because it is easier to clone an existing tree than to wait for males and females to pollinate each other naturally. Now, it’s not just trees and shrubs, but ornamental plants sold in urban nurseries that skew male. “Botanical sexism runs deep,” Ogren says.
In a cruel kind of irony, if urban landscapers had prioritized female trees in the same way, neither pollen nor unsightly seeds or fruit would be much of an issue. “If they had done it the opposite and planted hundreds of female trees with no males, it would have been just as sterile and tidy, without any pollen,” Ogren says. “Female trees don’t make fruits or seeds if there are no males around.” A large tree will scatter the majority of its pollen within 20 or 30 feet from its roots, Ogren says, so relatively isolated female trees simply wouldn’t bear much fruit.
Another argument proffered against female trees is that certain ones can produce an unpleasant odor. For example, when a lady gingko tree is in heat, it produces an odor not dissimilar to rotting fish or vomit. Ogren cedes this point. But if a city planted only female gingkos, decreasing the chance of fertilization, there would be neither pollen nor its infamously noxious postcoital odor, he says.
Ogren sees gingko gametes as the far greater threat. Unlike almost every other plant, gingko trees produce motile sperm, capable of swimming in pursuit of germination. Where human sperm each have a single tail, or flagellum, gingko sperm have around a thousand. “Once the pollen gets in your nose, it will germinate and start swimming up there to get to where it’s going,” Ogren says. “It’s pretty invasive.”
To guide cities to plant less allergenic trees, Ogren developed the Ogren Plant Allergy Scale (OPALS). The scale rates plants from 1–10 based on their allergy potential. But while certain institutions, such as Ogren’s hometown of San Luis Obispo and the California Public Health Department, have consulted OPALS while landscaping new developments, cities have been generally slow on the uptake. “It’s much harder to make changes when everything is already planted,” Ogren says. “Nobody wants to cut down trees.” Instead, Ogren wants cities to replace dead or dying trees with low-allergy options, such as hawthorn, mountain ash, and serviceberry trees. In certain cases, such as around daycares and hospitals, Ogren advocates actively removing extraordinarily allergenic species such as male elder, yew, and mulberry trees. (For most people, urban allergies are a seasonal nuisance. But for vulnerable populations, such as children or adults with respiratory conditions, they can be much more serious—even deadly.)
Most of Ogren’s current battles are hyper-local. He recently walked by a children’s center in Santa Barbara where a massive Podocarpus tree (a 10 on OPALS) was planted by the entrance. “It had so much pollen that if you flicked your finger on a leaf, a huge cloud would spurt out,” Ogren says. “So now I’m in a fight with the city of Santa Barbara.” Ogren’s proposal isn’t to chop down the tree but to have it regularly cut back, which would slow pollen production. In comparison, female Podocarpus trees produce a fruit around the size of an olive—and are a 1 on OPALS.
Though the biology behind Ogren’s idea passes muster in the field of urban forestry, many experts shy away from his terminology. Paul Ries, the director Oregon State University’s College of Forestry, sees botanical sexism as just one arm of the larger, historical problem of lack of diversity in urban forests. “Anytime we plant an overabundance of one type of tree, whether it is a single species, a genus, or, in the case of so-called ‘botanical sexism,’ male trees, there are bound to be problems,” Ries says. He cites the downfall of species that were widely and homogeneously planted, such as Bradford pear and ash trees, the latter of which are fighting a losing battle against an invasive, wood-chomping beetle called the emerald ash borer.
Still, Ries believes Ogren is on to something, adding that he’d like to see more research on the unintended effects of over-planting male trees. “I just wouldn’t call it sexism. Ascribing a real-life human problem to the botanical world might seem like we’re trivializing what humans, particularly women, face,” he says.
Terminology aside, the problem shows no signs of getting better. Unsurprisingly, climate change isn’t helping. According to a recent study in Lancet Planetary Health, the increase in extreme temperatures contributes to more potent allergy seasons. Summers come earlier and last longer, and certain species, such as cypress and juniper, have begun blooming again in the fall, Ogren says. In Durham, Lilley says he’s never seen anything as monumental as April’s pollen clouds in the city before. While it’s hard to say if the yellow sky was directly linked to climate change, pollenpocalypses will only become more and more common. It’s easy to see these clouds as freak occurrences—like a megadrought or superstorm—but they may be a sign of things to come.
Durham is far from the most pollen-polluted city in America. That superlative belongs to Tulsa, Oklahoma. (Durham ranks 67th, according to a 2018 report from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.). But Durham now has the unusual potential to radically diversify the makeup of its botanical residents, as the majority of its trees are approaching their twilight years. In the 1930s and 1940s, the city’s public works department oversaw a massive urban forestation effort that saw thousands of willow oaks planted within the city limits. Though they thrived for nearly a century, the oaks are reaching senescence. Under Lilley’s guidance, Durham has begun to reforest with a more diverse array of trees, including pines, maples, elms, dogwoods, and cherries.
Durham has no official guidelines for what kinds of trees can or will be planted, though the city does ban female gingkos. “The sex of the tree isn’t something we pay attention to,” Lilley says, adding that he hadn’t heard of the concept of botanical sexism. But he says Durham makes an effort to plant mostly monoecious trees, or ones with both male and female parts.
Ogren sexes trees wherever he goes; he can’t help it. He recently visited Sacramento for a conference and saw a dozen cedar trees planted by the capitol building—all males. On a recent trip to London, he spotted a veritable forest of male sweet bay trees. He was asked to give a lecture on botanical sexism in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he spent the entire day hunting around the city for a single female Podacarpus totara tree (spoiler alert: males, the lot of them). “A big part of the problem is most people don’t know much about trees, and think, well, trees are good and no trees are bad,” he says. “But trees are just like people, they have a multitude of differences. Some trees are human-friendly, and some are just the opposite.”
