As I implied up above, I'm a fan of both Baker in general and the Company books in particular; I read her first novel IN THE GARDEN OF IDEN in manuscript, longer ago than I want to remember, and put together the eight Company novels into four omnibuses when I worked at the SF Book Club. (See my reviews of the last few Baker books NOT LESS THAN GODS, THE BIRD OF THE RIVER, THE EMPRESS OF MARS, and THE HOTEL UNDER THE SAND for more of my burbling about how great a writer she was.) I wouldn't necessarily suggest starting here, though -- these are sidebar stories in an existing universe, so knowing the ground rules going in is a good thing. Instead, if you haven't read Baker, I'd suggest the first Company novel, IN THE GARDEN OF IDEN, first, or perhaps the Company collection GODS AND PAWNS, or one of her standalone fantasy novels if you like fantasy better than SF.
But do read Kage Baker: her career wasn't as long as it should have been, but she was very prolific for about a decade and wrote a whole bunch of really good novellas in particular -- the hallmark, I think, of a quintessentially great genre writer. And if you are a Baker fan who didn't know this book existed, or had forgotten about it -- well, you've just been reminded.

On today’s episode Anton talks thirty years of publishing with author Tad Williams on his return to his epic fantasy world of Osten Ard, his Bobby Dollar urban fantasy books, his Shadowmarch and Otherland series, writing, and most importantly who we’ll eat in pecking order to survive whatever apocalypse hits us first!
After falling in love with FALLING IN LOVE WITH HOMINIDS last year, Inda Lauryn of CORNER STONE PRESS sought out more Nalo Hopkinson.
I expected this one to be a short story collection as well. However, of the four pieces in this collection, two are fiction. (“Message in a Bottle” is also included in FALLING IN LOVE WITH HOMINIDS.) However, the title piece is a speech given at the International Conference of the Fantastic in the Arts from 2009. I can say with no exaggeration that this speech is life changing. Hopkinson addresses a pivotal moment in the speculative community that occurred before I became embedded in it: RaceFail. I don’t want to give away the point here, but for those of us who were not around when it occurred, this speech is a great primer for finding out the gist of the issue and the fallout that occurred afterward and continues to affect speculative communities. The interview at the end is also enlightening and can make Hopkinson a favorite writer before you ever read a word she wrote.
I fell in love with FALLING IN LOVE WITH HOMINIDS last year, so I was thrilled to find that SKIN FOLK was also a short story collection. One of the things I love most about Hopkinson’s writing is that she has a great ability to extend the unique voices of her characters in a way that makes me truly hear them in that voice, not my own. I honestly cannot say this about many writers. Hopkinson includes short blurbs at the beginning of stories, sometimes explaining inspiration or how these stories fit into speculative fiction. In any case, she centers her Caribbean upbringing with no explanation or apology. I’d highly recommend this one and point to “The Glass Bottle Trick” and “Greedy Choke Puppy” as two of my favorites in this collection

The Selecția Națională final is happening on Saturday! Now we’ve heard them all live, I’ve gone back and ranked the finalists:
PETRA – Ireligios

Romania have got their selection down to just 10 songs out of an original 46, and while there are several songs I miss, and a few fan faves I'm surprised didn't make it, I think this is a decent enough set of finalists.
Of my original top 5, only two remain, and I have to admit that the live of Llamame was a bit of a letdown – vocally he wasn't very strong and while I understand the choice to just go for dancers in the staging, I was hoping for something a little more atmospheric, so it's slipped down my rankings.That leaves Ireligios as the only one of my original favourites, and honestly if I only get one I’m glad it’s this one! The live performance was everything I wanted from it – PETRA sounded so good, and I love her voice! The chorus is really powerful, with the jazzy, melancholic tone, and I love the ‘whoa whoa’s with the backing singer’s supporting her, it’s a strong moment.
However, Ireligios isn’t my only favourite, Ana has joined it in that category! Back when I did my original ranking I thought it was a nice enough folk rock song but nothing more, which kept me from originally considering it a favourite – but on relisten and seeing the live performance I think this is really great! I really like the music, the violin works so well with the rock beat, and while I feel Dora’s performance could be slightly more confident, her voice is fantastic!
Outside my two favourites, there are plenty of other songs here I like well enough, especially Never Give Up, which has catchy chorus with a nice sing-along quality to it. I also want to mention Hurricane, which was the biggest climber on my ranking – I ranked it in the bottom half of my original ranking, well below most of these eventual finalists, but now there’s fewer songs and it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle, I actually find it really touching!
I’m rooting for either Ireligios or Ana to win and represent Romania in Turin – I have zero preference either way, as long as one of them wins I’ll be happy! While I might enjoy some of the songs a little further down my ranking, I’ll see any of them winning as a missed opportunity considering how much I like my two favourites. I also don’t think anything else has as good a chance of a decent result at Eurovision as either of those two songs!

Din 9 septembrie, un nou format muzical, o nouă grilă, mai multe surprize, la BFM
(5 septembrie 2019)
Bucureşti FM (BFM pentru ascultătorii săi) deschide noul sezon pe 9 septembrie cu o serie de schimbări, toate create pentru a-şi respecta misiunea asumată în faţa publicului său încă din 1990.
„Prin modificările operate în grila de program 2019-2020 adăugăm conţinut şi îl proiectăm mai eficient, on air şi online, publicului ţintă - oameni activi, cu vârste între 29 şi 45 de ani, dinamici, implicaţi în societate, cărora le pasă, single sau cu familie şi copii, cu o viaţă profesională plină, interesaţi de subiecte şi activităţi extra-profesionale, care activează în propriile comunităţi sau îşi doresc să o facă, cu pasiuni pe care şi le cultivă în afara serviciului, preocupaţi de un stil de viaţă sănătos”, spune Flavia Voinea – managerul postului.
BFM devine HOT AC INFO (Hot Adult Contemporary INFO)
Bucureşti FM este radioul comunităţilor urbane creative. 98,3 este frecvenţa pe care se regăsesc oamenii dinamici, implicaţi în societate şi în care îşi fac auzită vocea, cei care vor să schimbe percepţii şi mentalităţi, care dau plusvaloare comunităţii din care fac parte.
Muzica Bucureşti FM se adresează unui public matur (28-49 de ani). Principala schimbare pe care o aducem este îmbunătăţirea conţinutului muzical prin diversitatea genurilor şi a decadelor abordate, dar şi printr-un sound original şi o atentă selecţie a melodiilor, pentru a influenţa obiceiurile de ascultare şi preferinţele muzicale ale publicului.
Formatul muzical al postului se va adapta creşterii de conţinut editorial propriu şi se defineşte ca HOT AC INFO (Hot Adult Contemporary INFO), ceea ce presupune o creştere a ponderii de informaţie în directă legătură cu difuzarea unui număr mult mai mare de piese, selectate riguros pe criterii de notorietate/gen/mesaj şi ritm. Selecţia pieselor, categoriile şi playlist-ul zilnic sunt realizate de o echipă alcătuită din trei redactori cu experienţă în domeniul muzical.
Matinalul – o nouă formulă
BFM de Dimineaţă, matinalul care poate fi ascultat între 06:30 şi 10:00, primeşte o nouă faţă, faţa lui Minculescu! Ce se întâmplă dacă-l pui pe Alex, un rocker convins, lângă funky Marius? Ies scântei!
Realizatorii matinalului, Marius Stoica şi Alex Minculescu, promit artificii pe tavan, dimineaţa la trezire, pentru toţi cei aflaţi pe frecvenţa Bucureşti FM, şi-ţi dau un sfat: Ca să ai noroc în viaţă, BeFM de Dimineaţă!
Ştiri proaspete aduse de Tudor Dumitrescu, întreruperi, restricţii, trafic, meteo şi alte informaţii, rubrici cu lipici, funny stuff, fresh music şi invitaţi cu ştaif. O nebunie de emisiune, produsă de Roxana Drăgan.
„În cadrul programului matinal vom invita în studio, ca şi până acum, artişti de top, dar şi performeri, indiferent de domeniu, a căror activitate are relevanţă pentru ascultători, oameni care inspiră şi care sunt modele de urmat”, a punctat Flavia Voinea.
BFM susţine tinerii artişti
În cadrul emisiunii Ore deschise, între 11:00 şi 14:00, Răzvan Petre pune muzică bună, dă informaţii soft despre evenimentele ce au loc în oraş şi primeşte invitaţi în studio, artişti tineri – aflaţi la debut. „Încercăm astfel să îi încurajăm pe cei care nu sunt încă într-o relaţie contractuală cu o casă de discuri sau care se află la începutul carierei şi au nevoie de sprijin. Bucureşti FM îşi asumă prin asta şi misiunea de promotor al tinerelor talente”, explică Flavia Voinea.
În comunitaterevine
Între 14:00 şi 15:00, Mihaela Ioniţă şi Răzvan Ursuleanu strâng rândurile În comunitate şi te aşteaptă la un talkshow pe teme diverse ce ţin de comunităţile din Bucureşti, dar şi de subiectele majore aflate în dezbatere publică.
Schimbări şi în drive-time
Emisiunea Sens unic, programul de drive-time de luni-vineri de la 15:00 la 19:00, îi va avea ca realizatori pe Andreea Bratu şi Eugen Vrabie. Primeşti tot ceea ce ai nevoie să ştii şi eşti dispus să asculţi dacă eşti la birou sau captiv în maşină. Noutate absolută este rubrica Contre-jour - despre fotografie şi muzică, realizata de Bogdan Iorga, artist vizual, fotograf şi pasionat de istorie.
BFM rocks
Vineri între 22:00 şi 24:00, Lenţi Chiriac va realiza în direct emisiunea Studio Rock, cea mai veche emisiune de gen din România, care are deja un public fidel de 29 de ani de când se difuzează pe canalele radioului public.
„Serile de vineri, sâmbătă şi duminică vor satisface gusturile celor care de-a lungul vremii ne-au solicitat mai mult rock în emisiuni specializate, invocând corect rolul pe care radioul public îl are în a difuza muzică din toate genurile. Cu cele trei emisiuni realizate de Lenţi Chiriac (Studio Rock, Hit Single Rock şi Istoria Rockului) ne asigurăm un număr constant de ascultători în serile din weekend.
Sâmbăta, în intervalul 19:00-20:00), vom difuza în varianta editată City Vibes by Bucureşti FM concertul organizat miercurea în Bucureşti Mall Vitan. În cadrul concertelor vom aborda toate genurile muzicale şi vom invita artişti folk, pop, rock etc. din toate generaţiile”, conchide managerul BFM.
Studio între ascultători
„Cu microfoanele deschise îi aşteptăm pe cei valoroşi care vor să intre pe piaţa muzicală românească, în studioul amenajat în Bucureşti Mall Vitan. Acolo vom înregistra emisiunea Music Hub by Bucureşti FM, care va fi difuzată on air duminica între orele 19:00-20:00. În fiecare ediţie va fi invitat un aspirant sau un artist consacrat alături de un debutant, pentru că schimbul de experienţă între generaţii şi susţinerea valorii şi talentului artistic este parte din misiunea noastră. Vom continua seria evenimentelor muzicale realizate în Bucureşti Mall Vitan. Vom avea un studio propriu în locaţie şi vom organiza evenimente, concursuri, emisiuni, interacţionând direct cu publicul ascultător. Vom continua să realizăm propriile proiecte speciale (ex. 9 scriitori din 9-a generaţie – o campanie de promovare a tinerilor scriitori, pe care o desfăşurăm cu două săptămâni înainte de Târgul Internaţional de Carte – Gaudeamus)”, explică Mihaela Ioniţă, redactor şef BFM.
