once again remembering how a signed, first edition copy of Will of the Empress by Tamora Pierce single handedly made little pre-teen me go from "wait these girls are kissing. can I read a book with girls kissing each other in it???" to "I aM Going to REREAD everY moment where Daja and Rizu exiST Together and Giggle The Whole Time", singlehandedly turning me gay forever
also singlehandedly setting the bar for breakups so high, like, excuse you having Daja keep a little portrait of Rizu to remember her by and be caught looking at it while riding home with her sibs is so freaking sweet, the empress wanting Daja to stay specifically just to make Rizu happy again is so sweet,
and them breaking up not because of a fight or from a lack of love but because they both have Other Things in their lives and those Other Things are just as important as being in love, and they're not bitter about each other for it?
Sad yes, hurt, heartbroken- but it wasn't the wrong choice to not choose each other in the end, and it wasn't the wrong choice to choose each other at the start. Like, damn. 12yo me's mind was BLOWN

Quote
"You looked like you needed rescuing," Rizu commented, smiling. "Servants get more wedded to the social order than nobles do, I think." "Licking the boot that rests on their necks," grumbled Tris, her eyes still on the fleeing servant. "Oh, no, we dare not rest it someplace that they might not like," protested Rizu, mock-serious. "They retaliate so deviously, Before I learned better, I found all my hose tied in one big knot, and the maid who was assigned to me had gone home to care for a sick parent. I went six months with hose that fell down because they were stretched all out of shape. Mother said that truly noble people didn't hit their maids with a brush, and made me wear the hose until they were worn out. I missed two birthday cakes that year because I was out tying up my hose, again."

Part 1 of "College DaZu Love" - hey I have to make some jewelry for my class will you be the person I size it too
Daja knew this girl, was so madly in love with her, that half the time, she wasn't sure if she loved her or wanted to be her (it was a confusing time in young Daja Kisubo's college life). Rizu was beautiful, brilliant, and far more fashionable and popular than Daja was. (Daja knew that Rizu must have flaws, but she preferred to ignore them most of the time, hoping instead for perfection in an imperfect world.)
One day, after her metalworking class let out, she had to find someone to make jewelry for...well, not for. She had to make jewelry, and she just decided to use it as a way to talk to Rizu. The making of the jewelry would be simple, she had always had a way with metals of all kinds. She went through the types in her head.
Earring...too small and way too intimate.
Necklace....pretty good, but accidental touching of chest might happen.
Bracelet....bracelet! It was perfect, minimal touching but intimate touching, decent length needed to size it properly to her wrist.
So, working the metal rods that she always carried around her fingers, she walked around campus, trying to find the girl. As she walked, she went though the barriers she could think of. 'Maybe she is straight' Nah, she was too affectionate with girls to be straight. 'Maybe she is dating someone.' Fully possible and plausible. Daja and Rizu did not often hang out in the same circles, especially as Daja's circle of friends was mostly her foster siblings, who had come to the school with her. 'Maybe she will think I am creepy for doing this.' Nah, she is too nice to think that, she hoped.
As she was walking and not paying attention, she bumped into someone, spilling their books to the ground. She kneeled down to pick up the books, and when she looked up, it was into the eyes of Rizu.
"I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going." The usually strong Daja always folded when she was thinking of Rizu and then bumped into her (it had happened 5 times so far).
"It's fine, Daja. Could have happened to anyone, plus I was not paying much attention either." Rizu replied, smile on her face.
Before letting herself dwell on Rizu remembering her name, Daja said, "Hey, you are very good with fashion. I need to fit someone for a bracelet for my class. Would it be okay if I sized it to you?" She held up what looked like a braided vine of metal.
Rizu's smile was infectious. "That would be wonderful. Can we do it here?"
"Ye-yeah. We can do it right here, in fact," she said, motioning to the bench next to them.
The two girls sat down, Rizu with her books behind her, Daja with her's between her and the bench back.
"Give me your wrist, and I will size the bracelet to you."
Rizu layed her wrist onto Daja's crossed legs, and waited for the girl to start the simple process.
"So, you are in a jewelry making class?" Rizu asked.
Daja nodded as she let her fingers linger over the pulse point in Rizu's wrist, the ends of the metal meeting each other near the top.
"Would you like to go on a date with me tonight?" Rizu asked, bravely doing what she had been wanting to do for the months since the two girls had first met.
"You want to go on a date with me? I would love to!" Her joy was evident, as was the fact that the vine bracelet was sized well, the method of connection and disconnection was obvious from a glance.
"Well, why don't we meet at the Commons in half an hour, and go from there? I am sure there are buses that run over the nearby cities." Rizu said, smiling as she began to undo the bracelet's connection.
"No, keep the bracelet. I can always do another and turn that one in for class." Daja said, smiling as she walked away. She had a date with Rizu, in 30 minutes! She had to tell Sandry when she got back to the dorm, hopefully the girl would be there. The textiles major tended to be in their room, looming it up all hours of the afternoon.
