Feibo Girl
For much of China, the phrase “Roaring Twenties” may have a less jovial meaning. While the U.S. is in the middle of its Jazz Age, China is in the middle of its Warlord Era. The end of the Qing Dynasty has seen China is split into waring fractions called cliques, with those living in the country suffering the worst violence. It’s an especially dangerous time to be a woman.
Fortunately, the Fa family lives in Shanghai, where the wars usually aren’t as close, and women’s rights are blossoming. Heavy with Western influence, the neon-lit city is “the cosmopolitan Paris of the East.” It’s an even blend of old and new. Ancient-looking ships sail past modern skyscrapers, and pedestrians push wooden carts next to buses and trollies. [Link] It’s a good thing the women of Shanghai have more opportunities, because the warlords impose high taxes on their people, and ill veteran Fa Zhou can no longer work. His wife brings in some money sewing trendy qipaos, but it’s not enough to cover necessities and the warlord’s taxes. So Mulan takes it upon herself to save her family from financial ruin.
She first tries getting a job at a cabaret called the Lucky Cricket. Her mother and grandmother help give her the makeover needed to transform Mulan into a winking Feibo Girl—a Chinese flapper. Then, hesitantly, Mulan bobs her hair using a long, sharp family heirloom. But despite her best efforts, Mulan’s clumsiness clashes with the cabaret owner’s inability to listen, resulting in a show that entertains everybody for all the wrong reasons. While the patrons laugh wildly and snark that the performer is “on fire,” the literally inflamed owner loudly fires Mulan.
Ashamed, Mulan sits in the family’s garden, deep in thought. Near an opened window, Grandma belts out to American jazz on the radio. Grandma’s dance session is interrupted by an announcement from Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, a political and military leader seeking to reunite China and put an end to the warlords. He is recruiting soldiers for what he calls “the Northern Expedition.” Mulan—athletic, strategic, crafty, and often mistaken for a boy—perks at the announcement.
Since Mulan has already been bobbing her hair and binding her breasts per Western flapper fashion, all she really needs is a fake name. She enlists in the National Revolution Army under the alias “Ping.” Joining her are a tiny dragon sent by her ancestors, and the mascot from the Lucky Cricket. Training with both swords and machine guns, “Ping” initially causes some mayhem (thanks in no small part to pranks from her comrades). But by the time the troop boards the train out to their first battle, Ping is one of the most promising recruits Captain Li Shang has ever seen. Control of the railways is crucial to the warlords’ power, and most battles are fought near tracks. While squeezed onto the train and speeding through the country, the soldiers’ songs about girls worth fighting for are punctuated with harrowing scenes of massacred villages. They pull to a stop at a town that’s been burned to the ground, where Li Shang’s father lies among the dead. This is not the work of just any warlord. This was the infamous “Dog-Meat General,” Zhang Zongchang. A particularly ruthless and incompetent ruler, Zongchang is the most feared of China’s warlords. Mulan’s ingenuity leads to the troop’s first major victory, when she creates an avalanche that buries Dog-Meat’s most important railroad—with most of his troops still onboard. While in the infirmary, Mulan’s true sex is revealed. At first, Shang and the other men don’t know how to feel. But it turns out that a woman may be exactly what they need in their next move against Zongchang. The Dog-Meat General has a harem of 30-50 women, who are assigned numbers because he can’t remember their names. And he forgets their numbers. The guy is just asking for this infiltration. Mulan’s experience at the Lucky Cricket cabaret is now inviable. She drills the men on how to dress and act like attractive ladies, and the operation is soon underway.
Ling, Yao, and Chien Po giggle behind their fans as Zongchang boasts of his supposedly enormous masculinity. Meanwhile, Mulan and Shang quietly move to free the captured Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. Along the way, they rescue another prisoner, from Zongchang’s kitchen; the Dog Meat General’s name has several possible meanings, but he does indeed enjoy certain canine dishes. Mulan saves an energetic pup from the butcher, and names him Little Brother. Though not the brightest pooch in the word, Little Brother sniffs out Sun Yat-Sen’s holding cell.
Back at the harem, it’s time for the next phase of the plan. This requires the drag-queens to take out some guards, which means another distraction is needed. Luckily, the Dog-Meat General also fancies himself a poet. Mushu and the cricket take over the job of distracting him, by claiming to be his new typists.  Cri-Kee hops from ink to paper, taking down what the Dog Meat General dictates, while Mushu observes. The finished poem reads: You tell me to do this,
He tells me to do that. You're all bastards, Go fuck your mother.
"Poem about bastards" by Zhang Zongchang[b]
Tumblr media
Instead of applause, this poem is followed by an explosion of fireworks detonating all around his military base. Mulan has finally destroyed Zongchang’s army beyond salvaging. The Dog-Meat General himself is killed by an officer avenging his father; Li Shang blows his smoking pistol with satisfaction. Shang follows Mulan back to Shanghai, where they begin a new life together in a unified China.
AN: This picture came out looking very similar to the design that Jacquelynn Harris gave Mulan in her Disney flapper series. I assume this is because we both based the outfit on Mulan’s matchmaker attire, and her hair on actress Anna May Wong. The background border is clipart.
On the story: In the old version of my Disney flapper series, I set all the stories in the U.S. Someone suggested that I look at non-Western fashion from the era, and I dismissed the idea, ignorantly assuming that the Roaring Twenties only happened in the West. This time around, I decided to check if anything interesting was happening in China in the 1920s…and wow, what a rabbit hole! So many things fit so perfectly with Disney’s version of Mulan, especially with that bizarre Zongchang character. I’d never personally create an Asian villain with “dog meat” in his name, but the Dog-Meat General is one of those “can’t make this sh-t up” historical figures. Of course I took liberties with how the history actually played out, as Disney often does; but all of the personal traits described, from the numbered harem to the literal dog meat to that poem, were real. And yes, he was killed by an officer avenging a relative.  To anyone so inclined, here are a couple of incredible time-capsul videos from China in around this time period.  Up the Wangpoo River to Shanghai (1920s)  A video with sound and color from 1929

fuck it, night at the museum in disney world — here are the charas favorite attractions. don't ask me how everyone and the tablet got to orlando
larry — carousel of progress. vaguely, vaguely remembers going on the original as a kid at the 1965 world's fair and nicky calls him an Old
nicky — rock 'n' roller coaster or cosmic rewind. but he's one of those guests that gets annoyed if the ride song is "everybody wants to rule the world”
teddy — hall of presidents, OBVIOUSLY. does the spider-man pointing at the other theodore roosevelt animatronic
sacajawea — jungle cruise. gets REALLY into the S.E.A. lore, but besides that, she and teddy are always the ones laughing the loudest at the skipper's puns. you also best believe she's making everyone go on living with the land, too
ahkmenrah — loves haunted mansion for the macabre. murderous, power-hungry constance hatchaway cuts a little too close to home tho, so he prob prefers to ride tower of terror. also a cosmic rewind enjoyer, but if they get any ride song EXCEPT "september", grumbles about how they wasted a virtual queue reservation for the rest of the night
jedediah — big thunder mountain railroad. gets whiplash from staring at the goat during that one turn. goes tf off if anyone suggests him or octavius go on it's a small world
octavius — spaceship earth for the Roman Representation:tm:. appreciates the distinguished, old-school "edutainment" vibes (and the soothing voice of narrator dame Judi Dench)
attila — can't sit still on traditional omnimover rides, so he's really into fantasmic and the fireworks (absolutely loses it at the part with sorcerer mickey and the maleficent dragon). basically any show with flashy "magic" effects
joan of arc — rise of the resistance. 100% has no idea what the fuck is going on for most of the ride, but once she catches the general rebellion concept, she's ALL IN. prob tries to climb out of the ride vehicle to take a swipe at kylo ren
amelia — soarin', for the flight simulation vibes. tries to get the pilot role on smugglers run every time too, and takes it waaaaay too seriously, no matter how bad the team is. also forces everyone to wait in line for four hours for flight of passage
custer — splash mountain or country bear jamboree. loves all that old-timey, yeehaw shit. you Know why
kahmunrah — the great movie ride (cause i'm ignoring the existence of runaway railway lol). absolutely tries to take over the ride with ivan, napoleon, and al, plus recruiting the misc gangsters and western bandits/bank robbers. absolutely get their asses beat by the cast members
tilly — not a big fan of rides in general, but loves the beauty and the beast live show and goes to every princess meet and greet : )
lancelot — seven dwarves mine train, because they remind him of his jester and he likes to laugh at them (it also makes him feel like he's saving snow white at the end). if they go on pirates, he also tries to white knight for red and the ladies at the auction without realizing the scene has totally changed
laa — they stick him on the peoplemover and leave him there until the night is over lmao

what other characters are involved in the story that do not have refs?
Tumblr media
hiro hideki. a time traveler from 100 years ago. generally wise and gives good advice, he's attentive and quick to notice change. he’s also incredibly good at noticing small details of a person or place, like how someone’s face changes when they smile. his memories are all over the place, sadly. all he knows is that he arrived at sodor heavily injured exactly 5 years ago out of nowhere and lived in solidute inside the forest until thomas met him.
after retrieving his lost memories and realizing what had happened to him (and eventually, his old hometown and loved ones), he went back to japan and stayed in kotohira for 3 months to process the weight of his situation. his arc (hero of the rails) serves as a turning point in the story, making thomas and percy start to have differing opinions on their adventure, and generally turn the tone of casa tidmouth from light and comedic to darker and cosmically horrific.
Tumblr media
scott ficus gresley, gordon's only remaining brother. he's the driver of the flying scotsman (boy, what a coincidence) and is frequently on tour. he's friendly and proud, and he likes to tease gordon by calling him "gordie" or "little brother". however, there's this insecurity inside of him regarding the fear that he'll never be able to put whatever remained of the gresleys back together. sometimes he thinks that gordon is annoyed at him. overall, he and his brother have a generally good - if not a rivalry on one side - relationship.
rebecca nassif, a young newcomer that came to sodor to support her family (they initially had no idea). appears in act 2 when shit starts to hit the fan. gordon took her under his wing as an express driver trainee, and she looks up to him immensely (though she sometimes wishes he wouldn't overwork and be too hard on himself). she became a prominent character in act 2 after.... several important characters went missing out of the blue.
much to thomas and gordon's dismay, she was unaware of the mysteries and occurrences sodor has to offer. they hope that rebecca won't lose her spark someday.
nia wanjala, also a newbie. she appears in act 2 when things starts to get concerning. she and rebecca became friends over the fact that they are the newest recruits in the north western railway and the ones with the least experience. unlike her friend, however, she quickly catches on to the realization that sodor isn't as quirky or happy as she initially thought with how her senior coworkers kept talking about memorable drivers that went missing. she now rocks back and forth between striving for what she considers is safe and what she considers is beneficial to everyone around her.
there are many more characters, but for now these are the more important supporting cast.

“Two world wars have obscured the huge scale and enormous human cost of the Crimean War. Today it seems to us a relatively minor war; it is almost forgotten, like the plaques and gravestones in those churchyards. Even in the countries that took part in it (Russia, Britain, France, Piedmont-Sardinia in Italy and the Ottoman Empire, including those territories that would later make up Romania and Bulgaria) there are not many people today who could say what the Crimean War was all about. But for our ancestors before the First World War the Crimea was the major conflict of the nineteenth century, the most important war of their lifetimes, just as the world wars of the twentieth century are the dominant historical landmarks of our lives.
The losses were immense – at least three-quarters of a million soldiers killed in battle or lost through illness and disease, two-thirds of them Russian. The French lost around 100,000 men, the British a small fraction of that number, about 20,000, because they sent far fewer troops (98,000 British soldiers and sailors were involved in the Crimea compared to 310,000 French). But even so, for a small agricultural community such as Witchampton the loss of five able-bodied men was felt as a heavy blow. In the parishes of Whitegate, Aghada and Farsid in County Cork in Ireland, where the British army recruited heavily, almost one-third of the male population died in the Crimean War.
Nobody has counted the civilian casualties: victims of the shelling; people starved to death in besieged towns; populations devastated by disease spread by the armies; entire communities wiped out in the massacres and organized campaigns of ethnic cleansing that accompanied the fighting in the Caucasus, the Balkans and the Crimea. This was the first ‘total war’, a nineteenth-century version of the wars of our own age, involving civilians and humanitarian crises.
It was also the earliest example of a truly modern war – fought with new industrial technologies, modern rifles, steamships and railways, novel forms of logistics and communication like the telegraph, important innovations in military medicine, and war reporters and photographers directly on the scene. Yet at the same time it was the last war to be conducted by the old codes of chivalry, with ‘parliamentaries’ and truces in the fighting to clear the dead and wounded from the killing fields. The early battles in the Crimea, on the River Alma and at Balaklava, where the famous Charge of the Light Brigade took place, were not so very different from the sort of fighting that went on during the Napoleonic Wars. Yet the siege of Sevastopol, the longest and most crucial phase of the Crimean War, was a precursor of the industrialized trench warfare of 1914–18. During the eleven and a half months of the siege, 120 kilometres of trenches were dug by the Russians, the British and the French; 150 million gunshots and 5 million bombs and shells of various calibre were exchanged between the two sides.
The name of the Crimean War does not reflect its global scale and huge significance for Europe, Russia and that area of the world – stretching from the Balkans to Jerusalem, from Constantinople to the Caucasus – that came to be defined by the Eastern Question, the great international problem posed by the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. Perhaps it would be better to adopt the Russian name for the Crimean War, the ‘Eastern War’ (Vostochnaia voina), which at least has the merit of connecting it to the Eastern Question, or even the ‘Turco-Russian War’, the name for it in many Turkish sources, which places it in the longer-term historical context of centuries of warfare between the Russians and the Ottomans, although this omits the crucial factor of Western intervention in the war.”
- Orlando Figes, introduction to The Crimean War: A History
