Update nobody cares about coming thru! 🤪
OCB is going on hiatus indefinitely. It's just not fun trying to write a joyous story based on someone who's determined to be pessimistic rn. Instead, I may just focus on Eyes of the Beholder for now since I've already started scripting the first episode. And since it's an angsty fantasy WIP, I have a fun stop-motion project that I'm gonna be scriptwriting beside it! Will reveal more details on that one later. 😉

What's this? PAPER? I use it sometimes. Didn't feel like setting up my tablet but I wanted to draw something based a convo artastic-friend and I had. Except it bears no resemblance to that convo.
The jist is that, (following this post) when DJ and the reader were kids, DJ was much smaller. And since spiders don't generate body heat, he liked to be close to the reader. Often either sitting on their head or on their shoulders. (He liked to be close for other reasons but huehuehuehue he doesn't need to admit that yet.)
Anyway. Reader is atop DJ's head in a role-reversal of when they were kids, pontificating that they're really no help in keeping DJ warm these days, and DJ is assuring them that, nono, they do quite well at keeping him warm. (More metaphorical than physical this time but again he doesn't need to admit that yet. ;3 )
And that's the overlong explanation for what is really just a simple picture of y/n on giant spider DJ's head.

Merry Whatever you Celebrate IF you do so! Here's an extra holiday-themed strip for the season! Now, for all the talk about the Mandela effect and if it was Berenstain or Berenstein, etc., here's a case where a beloved childhood memory actually HAS been manipulated and changed with multiple, wildly different versions out there that is rarely discussed. Seriously, look it up. The Rankin Bass Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer has about as many different edits and versions as the Star Wars Special Editions. It's kind of wild. When this eventually gets colored for the book collections, I am SO gonna make my sweater blue and then change it to green mid-way through. IYKYK. ;)

It's me and my partner's first Christmas together this year! So in true funny fur fashion, I had to draw us in the style of the two Rudolph Movies we watched this year
Our shared childhood favorite the 1998 Rudolph Movie
And then the Rankin Bass Special! (This style gave me a LOT of trouble tbh, it took me a day longer than I expected!)

Have you seen the classic Rankin Bass Rudolph films they were my favorite and if so what do you think of Clarice?
I have seen them! that's the Rudolph I grew up with tbh. I wish I remembered them more
I was thinking of making Clarice a thing, a childhood best friend/girlfriend for Rudy, it's where she got her ribbon from!

20 Questions For Fic Writers
I was tagged by both @gretchensinister and @insufferablearchanist and am thus compelled by their charm and glamour to surrender my secrets! [grin]
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
93 at last count. It will probably stay at that number until 31 March 2024, which is when ROTG Hope Week starts. [I get a lot of mileage out of fandom events that are prompt-based.] My goal between now and the month of March is to complete or add to the chapter count of at least three of the multiple-chapter longfics I've got in various states of progress.
2. What’s your total word count?
AO3 says it's 220,945. I don't know if that counts chapters saved in draft on several of my works, which act as notes files for me. So I'm going to underestimate by a lot and say my word count is more than 200K and will leave it at that.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
I'm most well-known for fics in the RISE OF THE GUARDIANS/GUARDIANS OF CHILDHOOD fandom and its subfandom Nightmare Dork University. in the last two years I've ventured into writing fics set in the milieu of DELTARUNE [the videogame by Toby Fox], but those fics are so far into the realm of AU country that I can't claim to "write for the DELTARUNE fandom".
4. Top 5 fics by kudos?
A CITIZEN OF THE UNIVERSE AND A GENTLEMAN TO BOOT, which is the first fanfic I posted on AO3 and is still in progress. It's set after the ROTG movie and involves plot threads from the GOC books, as well as featuring several characters from the Rankin/Bass holiday specials.
"Fleecy Shining Streaming Gleaming/Gimme A Mare With Hair", a giftfic based on a prompt from the ROTG Kinkmeme on Dreamwidth from years agone. Still in progress; my giftee is ***extremely*** patient. [sob]
[[ATTIC]] [[NEST]] [[HOME]], my first DELTARUNE fanfic, set in an AU created by @penbwl and featuring the Swatchton pairing.
"A Temptation Averted", set in my Six Guardians AU series, and apparently everybody's favourite of my ROTG Blackice stories, probably because it's so schmoopy.
CALL SIGNS. Ah, CALL SIGNS. The mammoth fic that has eaten most of my current brain capacity, to the point where I have dreams about it. [and plans for sequels] It was supposed to be so simple. A "what if" story where two DELTARUNE characters met in a human!AU and at a different point in their timelines than they did in-game. Then it suddenly roared to life as a whole sequence of events lifted from my own experiences, spread out over an ever-increasing number of protagonists, not to mention featuring cameos from NDU characters. I wrote it to be accessible to people who haven't played the game and had no familiarity with the characters, and I've been told I've succeeded. I expect it will move up in the kudos count the longer it runs... so far it's the highest word-count work I have ever written. EVER.
5. Do you respond to comments?
99.9999% of the time, yes. [see the answer to questions 8 and 11]. I love comments... short comments, long comments, comments that are nothing but emojis and keysmashes, comments that are well-thought-out analyses. As long as the comment is offered in good faith, I'll answer it.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
If we're being strictly literal with the use of the word "ending", then it's a toss-up between "His Days Like Crazy Paving", "Exit", and "Making Fire".
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
So many of my stories are windows into my characters' "middles", rather than having narrative endings, and I tend to the fluph side of the writing scale. So here's a sampling of one-shots that conclude on a happy note... "Caterpillar", "Starmeadow", "Your First Memory Of All", "Bedtime Story", and "Centres Small And Still".
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I've never gotten out-and-out hate on fics. I *have* had someone react negatively when they wanted to use my comment space to plug fics they had written in fandoms I wasn't interested in and I said as much in reply.
9. Do you write smut?
On occasion. I *enjoy* smut... a lot... but I read more smut than I write. "The Joy Of First Flight" is probably my most explicit work to date, and even that is not terribly steamy.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Again, on occasion. CITIZEN ended up being a crossover about halfway in, surprising me rather completely. CALL SIGNS features cameos from other fanon characters, but isn't technically a crossover. AND FEAR AS MY COMPANION is the only work I've written with the initial intent of being a crossover between RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and DOCTOR WHO.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of. I **have**, however, fallen victim to being fooled by AI bots writing what I thought were truly sincere and sweet comments, which I foolishly answered before realizing the truth. Still kicking myself for how gullible I was, but it was at a low point in my confidence as a writer and I was starved for reassurance.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Into a language other than English? Not that I've been informed about. However, someone did make a podfic of my drabble "Hope In A Storm", if that counts as "translation" rather than "transformation".
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I've collaboratively tossed ideas around with @ksclaw and @piratekingpitchblack that have made their way into character development and plotlines for more than a few Nightmare Dork University stories.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
HOW CAN I CHOOOOOOOOOOOOSE?
Tumblr media
The one that started it all, that punched me in the gut not even twenty minutes after I saw RISE OF THE GUARDIANS for the first time, was Blackice. I devoured then and continue to devour now every Blackice shipfic I can get my little paws on. From there, once I found the NDU subfandom, it was NDU StageFright all the way, although it's now running neck-and-neck with NDU Nightmare Galleon as far as fics I've written. And currently, I have a very active Tumblr tag labelled "i have fallen down the swatchton sinkhole don't even try to rescue me", if that gives any hints.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?
I am realllllllllllllllllllly hoping that I can get inspiration for "Sweater Weather" going again.
16. What are your writing strengths?
RESEARCH.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Falling into the timesink that research leads to. [sob]
Tumblr media
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?
That hasn't come up in any of my fics so far, other than throwing gratuitous Italian into dialogue for my OC Mama Michelina.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
If you don't count the self-insert novelization of YELLOW SUBMARINE that I wrote when I was fourteen, then ROTG would be the first fandom I've written for.
20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?
That's a toughie. The most ***personally satisfying*** fics I've written have been "Deal The Cards", which is a love letter to one of my favourite relatives, now deceased, and "Which Witch", one of the few times a story came pouring out of me without needing to be edited to shreds.
I am hesitant to tag people because when I've done so in other ask games, it has often backfired on me. I love all my mutuals and don't want anyone to feel left out. Therefore.....
WHOEVER READS THIS AND WANTS TO PLAY, CONSIDER YOURSELF TAGGED.

Types of songs in "A Christmas Carol" musical adaptations
When a story has been adapted into so many musicals, it's easy to notice patterns in the songs that usually feature. These are the song types from all the musical adaptations of A Christmas Carol I know.
In chronological order, the musicals are: the 1954 Bernard Hermann operetta for CBS TV, the 1956 NBC TV musical The Stingiest Man in Town (later remade in animation by Rankin/Bass in 1978), Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, the 1970 film Scrooge, The Muppet Christmas Carol, the 1997 Nickelodeon animated film, Alan Menken's A Christmas Carol: The Musical, and 2022's animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.
*Fourth wall-breaking chorus invites the audience to celebrate Christmas/hear the story ("Holly-Ho," "Sing a Christmas Carol," or "Tell Me a Tale About Christmas")
*Londoners sing happily about celebrating Christmas Eve (e.g. "On This Darkest Day of Winter," "Santa Claus," "Jolly Good Time")
**Subtype: Happy Christmas Eve solo for Fred, with chorus (e.g. "An Old-Fashioned Christmas," or "I Love Christmas")
*Bitter and greedy Scrooge song (e.g. "Ringle, Ringle," "I Hate People," "Nothing to Do with Me," or "Tell Me")
*Londoners sing about Scrooge's meanness (e.g. "The Stingiest Man in Town," "Father Christmas," or "Scrooge")
*Happy Christmas Eve song for Bob Cratchit, sometimes with Tiny Tim too (e.g. "Christmas Children," "One More Sleep Till Christmas," or "You Mean More to Me Than Anything")
*Jacob Marley lament/warning song (e.g. "I Wear a Chain," "Marley and Marley," or "Link By Link")
*Lonely solo for Scrooge as a child (e.g. "Alone in the World," "When Shadows Fall," or "A Place Called Home")
*Festive Fezziwig party song (e.g. "December the Twenty-Fifth," "Mr. Fezziwig's Annual Christmas Ball")
*Happy love song for Belle and Young Scrooge – either a duet or a solo for Belle (e.g. "What Shall I Get My Lad for Christmas?" "Golden Dreams," "Happiness," or "A Place Called Home")
*Sad breakup song for Belle and Young Scrooge – either a Belle solo, a Scrooge solo, or a duet (e.g. "It Might Have Been," "Winter Was Warm," "You," "When Love is Gone," "Cross This Bridge," or "Later Never Comes")
*Ghost of Christmas Present song (e.g. "A Very Merry Christmas," "The Song of the Christmas Spirit," "I Like Life," "It Feels Like Christmas," or "Abundance and Charity")
**Subtype: Londoners sing of celebrating Christmas Day, joined by the Ghost of Christmas Present (e.g. again, "It Feels Like Christmas," or "Christmas Together")
*Heartwarming Christmas song for the Cratchits and/or Tiny Tim (e.g. "And Bless Us Every One," "Yes, There Is A Santa Claus," "The Lord's Bright Blessing," "The Beautiful Day," or "Bless Us All")
*Ensemble for people in the Future disrespecting Scrooge in death (e.g. "Thank You Very Much," or "Dancing On Your Grave")
*Scrooge sings of his resolve to be a better man (e.g. "Mankind Shall Be My Business," "I'll Begin Again," "A Thankful Heart," "Yesterday, Tomorrow, and Today/God Bless Us Everyone")
*Happy reprises of earlier songs in the final scene (virtually every version does this)
Songs where I can only think of one example each
*Duet for Scrooge and Fred of contrasting world views ("Humbug" from The Stingiest Man in Town)
*Ghost of Christmas Past song ("The Lights of Long Ago" from the Alan Menken musical)
*Tender song for Scrooge's mother in the past ("God Bless Us Every One" from the Alan Menken musical – one of the only versions of the story where Scrooge's mother even appears)
*Tender song for Scrooge's sister Fan ("Christmas Wishes" from Scrooge: A Christmas Carol)
*Duet for Scrooge and the Ghost of Christmas Present about Tiny Tim ("One Little Boy" from The Stingiest Man in Town)
*Festive song for Fred and his party guests ("Santa's Sooty Suit" from the 1997 animated film)
*Solo for Fred about the birth of Jesus ("Birthday Party of the King" from The Stingiest Man in Town)
*Reprise by Scrooge of his lonely childhood song at his own grave in the Future ("Alone in the World (Reprise)" from Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol)

what's your favorite christmas movie?
Santa Claus is Comin' to Town! It's one of those stop-motion Rankin-Bass productions and tells the story of how Santa came to be. The Year Without a Santa Claus, also a Rankin-Bass movie, is a close second. I cannot overstate how much these movies were a part of my childhood (so was the original animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Rudolph)

Christmas in Greyhawk - Adapting real world holiday traditions into your game
Tumblr media
Hullo, Gentle Readers. With the holiday season approaching, I’ve been chatting with some friends about potential Christmas games of D&D they’re going to run. It’s made me imagine working on my own game, and I thought I’d share a few ideas I had that might be enjoyable for a game set at a festive wintry time of year.
Anything related to Christmas is, of course, somewhat overshadowed by the figure of Santa Claus. He’s so rich with fantasy and mythology, too, that he seems like a character ripe for a D&D version. He has magical powers, he works closely with elves, he associates with flying reindeer...if you look at the Rankin/Bass specials, or the book The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus by L. Frank Baum, you can add even weirder elements to his story. In Baum, especially, he’s connected to nature spirits, immortals, and various animals. This makes me consider creating an Archdruid called Nicholas the Giftbringer.
Druid is a surprisingly good class build for Nicholas. Timeless Body would make him age much more slowly, allowing him to live over many years. Druid spells could make awakened and magical reindeer. I’d go with Circle of Dreams, to attach him to the fey (the elves again) and to traverse through dreams...how else can he make it around the world in one night?
In modern times, a lot of people are rediscovering the fun of an “Anti-Santa”, most often in the form of the Krampus. Krampusnacht remains popular in Germany, and it’s starting to catch on here in the U.S. in some areas. A figure that punishes naughty children seems like a good piece to add to our crazy Christmas materials.
To avoid making this a straight Krampus analogy, I’m thinking it would be fun to have a powerful figure as the center of this, but with servants who seek the naughty children. I kind of want to borrow the concept of a Snow Queen from Hans Christian Andersen, before she became Else in Frozen.
This could be an Archfey, similar to the Prince of Frost, or it could be a monster the PCs could fight. Depending on the level of the party, it might be a Frost Druid, a Bheur Hag, a Frost Giant Everlasting One, a White Dragon, or something else entirely. As far as servants to seek out naughty children, the Banderhobb seems a natural choice.
It’s worth noting that you don’t have to do anything traditional. This is your story, and you’re more than allowed to go in a crazy direction. Maybe Santa Claus is a polymorphed silver dragon who works with a wintry variety of gnomes to make toys. Maybe orcs of the frozen lands are his steadfast guardians. In his Guardians of Childhood books, William Joyce has Nicholas St. North, the Santa figure, as the leader of a group of Yeti.
To close out this bit of holiday fun, I thought I’d share a traditional wassail recipe, because drinking alcohol on the holidays is always a good time.
Ingredients
1 gallon apple cider
2 cups orange juice
1 cup lemon juice
½ cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 orange, sliced
½ cup brandy
Instructions
Mix juices, sugar, brandy, and seasonings together.
Slowly bring to a boil in a large saucepan or pot. Boil for 1 minute.
Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
Serve hot with sliced oranges floating in the punch bowl.
Note that I’ve mostly looked at Christmas traditions, but there are many holidays at this time of year. I’m sure my clever readers can come up with all kinds of story elements from holiday traditions they enjoy. And whether you run a game during this time of year, I hope you have a very enjoyable holiday season.

So if you're one of the Many People who follow Me, you'll know that I've created my own Personal Bully Character for my own Rudolph Adaptation Project. Welp, here he is. Just as I've been doubting on what the Son of Blitzen would even look like but after sketching it out and even coloring it, so far, this is the True Concept on how I imagine my own Antagonistic Reindeer character would be.
Meet Storm, one of the Yearlings of one of the Reindeer of Santa Claus (Blitzen) as well as an Arch-Rival to Rudolph. Inspired by the Character from the 1998 Version, Arrow. Those who have seen the Famous Rankin Bass version might very unfamiliar towards the Underrated Goodtimes version (to those who haven't seen nor never watched the 90s version), specifically being very unfamiliar on who this "Arrow" is that I speak of that this Character of Mine is based on within Another (yet, Obscure) Adaptation.
If you're "Half" the kind of Christmas Movie fan that's unaware of the Lost Media of Christmas films out there or to those who have a Lost Memory in case if any of y'all have at least seen the Goodtimes version in your own Childhoods, I'll give you guys some brief info of where my own Character draws from;
Arrow is a Cousin to Rudolph (specifically in that version where Rudolph is Blitzen's Son, Cupid, Comet, and Dasher are Rudolph's Uncles/Blitzen's Brothers as Arrow is the Son of Cupid). He basically constantly bullies his own Cousin because of his Red Nose at School just to ridicule Rudolph, but only then that it's confirmed that there's a Love Triangle between The Two Cousins over one Doe that being Zoey (not "Clarice" like in the R/B version). In addition to this Original Character's lore, at the Reindeer Games, when Rudolph's Nose glows (only to cause Arrow and the Other Reindeer to go blind and lost the game), Arrow is crowned champ & for some reason, Zoey breaks up with him after all of these years somehow (causing his own Cousin to go off on a Lost Journey where his Ex-Girlfriend had to find him).
Now while I do think that the idea of a Love Triangle for a Character within the Trope of The Ugly Duckling sounds very Interesting, the Writing behind the OG Love Triangle is such a confusing mess that I personally think it could've been done better. I don't wish to spoil every much detail of that version but given on how that Goodtimes Entertainment is a Dead Company, only to be infamously known that their own personal Adaptations are only infamously known to be "Bootlegs", I don't personality understand nor why people would randomly call a Non-Disney adaptation of a Famous Old Story a "Knock-Off" just because of the Cheap Animation that almost looks similar to your average run-of-the-mill Decade 2D Animated Film. Though, one thing that I will have to admit is how some of their adaptations can be poorly written or just left explain as the '98 does have a lot of its problems than the '64 one.
(Seriously, you need to look up on how that their Movies are so comparable to Disney's).
Granted, I KNOW for a fact that the '64 definitely didn't aged well either, but in regards, I wouldn't even want to come close as to wanting to call the '98 version "Problematic", it's just suffers from most of Goodtimes' writing and so many Interesting concepts were left out on what could've been.
Without any further, here is some brief info about my Personal Rival Character;
Storm is the Son of Blitzen and Pele, as well as The Youngest Brother of Lighting.. He is a Braggart whose shown to be Misogynistic, Arrogant, Overconfident, and Narcissistic whose shown to be within of a more "Bad Boy" type as he tends to prove willingly that he's strong enough to pull Santa's sleigh someday in order to follow and take over his own Father's hooves. He's also very envious as he shown to be very jealous of Rudolph. Deep down, outside of his Mean-Spirited Nature, he's shown to be passionate and loyal enough for his Father in order to improve himself that he can be complex when it comes to his practice towards his Flying Skills.
He somewhat holds an Platonic Interest towards Ava as he likes to tease her just for giggles (though No Romantic Affection is shown as to why he likes her), but he desires to have her and other yearlings be on his Future Team for someday when they fly the Sleigh as The Next Generation of Santa's Reindeer to gain his Father's legacy and prove that he can actually be the lead Reindeer of his own herd.
When Rudolph came to class for the very first time, Storm recognized his Red Nose as he began to make fun of it (causing the Other Yearlings to ridicule him), making Poor Rudolph to cry. However, when Ava came and took Rudolph in her own Friend Group, Storm somewhat became jealous of Rudolph that he took one of the Yearlings off his own future team. Although He didn't seem to care about Ava's own herd anyways, since the Reindeer Bully had to look for New Yearlings for Special Teammates in order to produce a "Friend" Group of his own Herd to start a Bully Posse.
When the Day that the Reindeer Games came, Storm and his own Group rivaled against Other Yearling Teams (including Rudolph's) as The Reindeer Games only had about 5 Teams of their own Herds. But Storm and his Herd were a Match against Rudolph's, beating every level that the Naughty Reindeer Posse could just so that they could afford to win an award of their own. During the Final Showdown, when Storm was about to beat the Very Last Level of the Games, Storm instantly threw dust into Rudolph's eyes, causing his Nose to blast a huge glow (which made Storm's final award to be ruined) as everyone else was very shocked to see Rudolph's shining nose.
This huge level failure caused Storm to be angered and even more envious for he wanted to get revenge on the Reindeer for doing so on what he did to him in the Games.
On a regular basis of a day, He and his Group pretends that they've completely reformed for themselves as Storm (lyingly) apologizes to Rudolph of what he did to him of all these years of ridiculing. Believing in Storm's lie, Storm then leads Rudolph the way (along with his troops) into a long walk through the Forest away from Christmas Town. Confused about where they're at now, Storm instantly pushes Rudolph off of a small cliff as he lands on the Ground hurt which soon reveals the hidden dark truth as Storm and his Gang leave him to rot alone in the Forest.
Throughout the Story, Storm sures himself not be worried about anything if his Father were to find out the Truth about Rudolph or else, he won't get any presents for Christmas as he keeps his own Truth to be hidden while Rudolph and Ava (who are split apart by their own Groups) are still out there looking for each other.
Near the end of the Story, when everyone found out about where Rudolph was all along throughout that Crazy Snow Storm, Blitzen was extremely pissed and disappointed in his Son for not telling the truth all along that he left Rudolph out there in the Woods, when Storm tried to convinced his Father not to ground him and swear that he'll change for the better, he was then punished to be on the Naughty List as he was not allowed to get Presents this Year as Storm would then for now on have to face his own actions for his consequences after when Christmas was over.
In an early concept when creating this Character, I was originally going to name him "Spike" (to try rhythming it with "Blitzen") but then I realize that the first name itself had absolutely nothing to do with the common nature of Blitzen (but I also realize on how stupid the name was and how it was often more of a Dog's name rather than an Reindeer name), so I instantly switched it to a much and more fitting name to suit within of a Spawn of a Particular Folk Figure's Meaning behind the Name itself.
Storm (c) Me Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (c) Robert L. May
