BTW, in the new concept art released on the N7 day, there seems to be a mysterious new alien species present

It has similar legs to turians, but turian signature collar is missing. Considering Turians are an avian species, I think this might be the mysterious Raloi species (also an avian species), which has integrated into Council space in the period between Mass Effect 2's ending and Mass Effect 3's beginning. They were absent from Mass Effect 3 as they went back into hiding on their home planet.

To celebrate N7 day, some bits of background ME lore you might not know about:

There was a famous batarian pirate (Essul) that was killed by the Spectres after leading 11 blitz and a huge pirate army in the Terminus. Nowadays, young spacers swear they will be the ones to find his lost legendary stockpiles of eezo and live like kings.

There is a garden planet in the Terminus that is nearly impossible to live in, because of its earthquakes, radiation and storms. However, the latter made it a sanctuary for escaped batarian slaves, since it meant no sensors could find them there.

There is an Alliance planet where slavery was technically legalized (the reasoning behind it was that if they abolished the minimum wage, they could rival batarian economy on that system). This decision led the planet to a brutal civil war that broke both sides, but the minimum wage ended up being restored.

The "Leviathan of Dis" (not actually Leviathan, just a reaper) was already referenced in ME1, and had been with the batarian hegemony for years when the game started. This is confirmed by Balak if you meet him in ME3.

There was, somewhere, a horizontally-oriented race.

There is a huge ancient burial ground on Vecchio, but the closest garden world (Volturno) bears no sapient life, and the remains are too damaged to identify who those people might have been

You probably already know about the Raloi, the race that joined the council shortly before the Reaper war. What you may not know is that during the welcoming ceremony, a well-meaning group of krogan representatives tried to introduce a sport called Kowla. There were a lot of injuries and multiple deaths.

Do you remember Aish Ashland, the human heiress you could talk to in the casino infiltration? She donated her DNA to the Hollywood bank of fame. Except for the fact it wasn't her DNA at all, it was her (estranged) twin sister's. She claimed it was her way of "of apologizing for a lifetime of stealing her boyfriends and tormenting her".

Kruban is a planet named after a krogan mythological paradise, where a warrior may feast on the guts of his enemies. Every year a few krogans go to Kruban (a venusian hothouse filled with sulfur) to prove their "kroganhood".

Commander Shepard is in a Tupari ad. If you don't know what Tupari is, there's a few buttons in ME2 you still got to press stubbornly.

The Milky Way has been made into one planet and the territories are continents, every inhabited system is a country, and every colonised planet is a city. Information not provided in game was sourced from the fanwiki (the location of the Hanar, Drell, Raloi and Yahg homeworlds etc.)

2. a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom

Oh my god okay I can see where the problem lays. I too prefer seeing characters switch, so I'm going to be a Naughty Nelson and switch things up a little. I always see Zaeed depicted as a top, very in control of the situation and a real dominate (hell I perpetuate this myself), but I want to play in the space of him being the bottom. Of Zaeed, for all his bravado and temperament, after yelling at Shepard for letting his revenge against Vido go tits up, finally gets what's coming to him.

Shepard comes into Zaeed's room and pushes him down with a snarl. "You think you have the rights to call the shots outside this room? Out on the field you are my bitch, got it?"

I'm quickly losing sight of the original point, but renegade Shepard fucking that old man with a gun. Why hasn't BioWare answered any of my calls?

14. that one thing you see in fics all the time

Any time I venture out of my specifically curated fic circles I tend to see my faves (re: Kaidan and Carth) as the whiny butt of a joke, or being written off as these nobody bitch boys and it's like. Okay I get it. Bye.

White Kaidan. I'm definitely guilty of perpetuating this, and of course BioWare is big on whitewashing their own characters, but I would just love to see more of ME3 Kaidan with his ME1 skin tone.

Not that the fandom has a lot to go on in the first place, but I want to know more about the supposed bird people that were just starting to get their space legs right before the reaper war. All that's known about them is that the Asari attempted contact with them. I might be misremembering, but come on!!! Literal bird people!! Shut up with calling turians bird people because there are (probably) actual bird people!!

I gotta circle back to those bird people. I went on the wiki real quick, they're the Raloi, and they withdrew back to their home planet and destroyed all their satellites when the Reapers came. And they have to wear environment suits when engaging with other races like the quarians. I just think they're really neat is all...

It had been about a month since Suzume formerly known by a different name had gone into a deep sleep due to the nanite treatment at the Raloi embassy which had changed her whole body from the inside out to the way she was always meant to be and how she imagined herself to be.

"Mmmm....." She slowly woke up after the treatment had fully finished and she felt oddly refreshed and felt like she could take on the whole world seeing Kilena and the others sitting at the side of the bed.

"Oh hey! How are you all and ehmm.. H-How do I look?" She asked with her voice sounding feminine and different but exactly how she imagined herself to sound like.

"You look amazing, my love." Kilena gives her a peck on the forehead and the other girls agree. "We're going to be around all day while you get your bedrest. If you need anything, like food, water, or more pillows, just call us and we'll help you out, Suzume." Kilena says.

I: Hi Ted good to see you, thank you so much for agreeing to this interview, I know being you’re very busy and all. How are you?

T: I'm doing good, how are you?

I: I’m great thanks for asking. Before we get into KingsGuard let’s talk about this collaboration album you just released, what inspired that?

T: Nothing really, I just thought it'd be a good idea to release a whole collection of them so that people don't have to pay for the separate CD's.

I: You’ve also just released a wonderful track with Elton John, I absolutely love the song, how did the process go with getting him on. Was he hard to reach?

T: It was a lengthy process, we 1st had to talk to his agent, then his lawyer, then his agent again then we got through to him and he was amazing.

I: Yea he’s always amazing, what’s the story behind this song, because this song isn’t just singing words into a mic, this song sounds and feels like it comes from a place within you, it’s deep.

T: I don't know really, its probably just all the built up stress just leaving us from writing it, to producing it and even meeting up.

I: good you could find a way to relieve that stress into a beautiful song! Ok now let’s get into KingsGuard what can you tell us about this movie?

T: Its set in LS and its about a normal guy who keeps getting himself in trouble because of the people he was brought up with and because of the loss of his father.

He meets up with someone who got him out of serving jail time and finds out he's a secret agent.

That guy brings my character to a training facility and trains him with a bunch of others to become secret agents.

I: How are you and your character in KingsGuard alike and how are you two different?

T: Well he's a master at using guns and I'm still learning to use one properly,

What we have similar is parkour and gymnastics skills as I had to learn it in PE in my primary school in London and my middle/high school here. I still do it sometimes but I mainly do flips and stuff on my bmx.

I: How long did KingsGuard take to film?

T: Up to 2 and a half months due to it being filmed in LS we was able to get permits to close certain streets and film in certain locations.

I: What or who inspired you to get into acting?

T: No one really, I had to do it in Primary School and I enjoyed it so I just carried on doing it.

How do you continue the Mass Effect series in the Milky Way when the original trilogy is so antagonistic to anything being canon?

I'm not talking about Mass Effect 3's ending choices, those are just the tip of the iceberg. Mass Effect’s choice-based design means there are millions upon millions of Shepards, with different names and sexes and races and backgrounds well before we get into the colossal number of choices big and small that shape each playthrough. How do you pick just one of those to be canon?

My "sequel" concept both sidesteps the issue of continuity and embraces the spirit of choice to proudly proclaim that they're all canon. Ludmilla Shepard, the Engineer who cured the Genophage but got her whole crew killed, is canon. Hakeem Shepard, the Vanguard who kept Grunt in a pod and never got drunk with Dr. Chakwas, is canon. Even Shepards who didn't date Garrus or Tali are canon. All of them are canon, because all of them take place in an alternate universe, with similar but distinct variants that make each player's experience unique.

Mass Effect Echoes takes place in a universe much like the one the Original Trilogy introduced us to, reshaped by a single seismic difference: when humanity activates Relay 314, it goes unnoticed by turian patrols.

While this change alone assures a very different reality than the one we're used to, everything changes in 2186, when millions of alternate Shepards' timelines converged with the release of a catastrophic burst of energy. Regardless of what each Shepard chose to do with this energy, the effect is so potent and simultaneous that ripple effects are felt in the Echoes reality, resulting in three major events: all relays shut down temporarily, every keeper in the Citadel dies, and the Reapers, who haven't even begun their conquest of the galaxy, are destroyed.

Mass Effect Echoes begins in 2192, six years after the Surge upends galactic politics. Committed to finding the source of this shutdown out of fear the relays may fail again, a team of scientific ships are combing the galaxy for answers and solutions. And while they dodged the ultimate bullet of the Reapers, the denizens of this galaxy must contend with threats old and new as fear dominates the Milky Way.

As a further meta-commentary on this game’s relationship with the Original Trilogy, a major theme of the game is rebelling against expectations established by the classic games. Your squad is full of oddballs and revolutionaries, and your ship’s resident Spectre is David Anderson’s old friend and colleague Saren Arterius, who thanks to a different First Contact War is now chummy as hell with humanity despite his occasional ruthless streak (tamped down due to lack of radicalization, but still present). That said, my goal is creating a realistic alternate timeline, which means characters who were very young before the timeline split will have radically different lives and will likely not be seen beyond maybe a cameo (sorry Garrus!), and any character born after the split will not exist (sorry Tali!); to use Tali as an example, while it’s certainly possible that her parents had a child in this timeline, and even named the child “Tali” if it was a girl, this version would be more like a sibling than the Tali we know, as the odds of getting the exact same kid are statistically impossible (as twins show, not even identical circumstances of conception guarantees the same appearance or personality). The butterfly effect can be cruel.

A final goal is to explore new sides of the Milky Way in a similar way that Mass Effect 2 provided; your crew includes a raloi (an offscreen race whose introduction to the Council was cut short by the war) and we finally get a batarian squadmate to gain perspective about their culture. It’s frankly weird as hell that the Original Trilogy features only a handful of female turians (DLC-only) and zero female batarians, drell, volus, or elcor (unless we count voice lines from Blasto); the dearth of female salarians and krogans at least gets explained on a cultural level. Andromeda does a decent job rectifying this where it could, but for some reason forgets the position of codified societal power that female salarians have over male salarians (somehow one of them is a receptionist?). All of this will be fixed! We’ll see what an actual galactic civilization would look like without the bizarre absence of folks who aren’t adult men, which means we include children as well here and there (we’re gonna see tiny elcor with slow helium voices if it’s the last thing I do).

I’ve played Mass Effect for a long time, but your post on the Reapers arriving early was the first I’ve ever heard of the Raloi

They are mentioned once in the entire series, and a couple times in supplementary materials.

They're a feathered bird-like species that achieves spaceflight and is welcomed into the Galactic community in 2185. Beforehand, their existence was known to the Elcor, but the Asari ultimately make first contact.

Their one mention in the games is a news broadcast you can hear on the Citadel in ME3.

They pull their representatives from the Citadel and destroy all the satellites and ships, hoping the Reapers see them as a pre-spaceflight species and will skip over them, because they don't have the technology to fight.

We don't learn if it works.
