Record Store Day 2022 announced Taylor Swift as its first-ever global ambassador, for its 15th-anniversary celebrations that took place on April 23rd. Another Record Store Day will take place on June 18th, 2022 to release items that were either delayed in production or could not be made in time for Record Store Day in April. Jack White has addressed this issue by calling out major labels who are overloading the pressing plants to invest in their own pressing plants. This remaster sounds fantastic🔥

I picked this up last week for Record Store Day, and nearly 40 years later after its initial release, it remains a confounding, exciting, over-stuffed explosion of sound that wants SO BAD to be a hit dance song but pushes the envelope a little too much. This re-released extended remix highlights why as it strips away the different elements in places to reveal the individual parts more clearly—drums, synth bass, scratchy funk guitar and more. They’re all moving in different time signatures and to this day, I can’t quite tell how it all locks into place like a Swiss Watch when the 4/4 beat comes in, but brilliantly, it does. How he pulled that off in the pre-DAW era is beyond me. Mixing together together that guitar funk, young Michael Jackson-like backing vocals, New Orleans trombone, orchestral synth hits, a sprightly flute solo, a circa-1978 vocoder intoning a catchy slogan (“Wise up, hyperactivate”), a German psychiatrist and a tale of childhood anxieties, the song has enough ideas in play for an entire album side, much less three-and-a-half minutes. Will Thomas Dolby ever get his due as more than a purveyor of novelty songs? Probably not, but the epic construction of this track highlights just how serious, calculated and ambitious he actually was.

The year was 2001. I was in my junior year of college, I’d been married less than a year, and I was living in abject poverty. I think my apartment was 350 square feet, and it had cinderblock walls. I scraped together enough money to buy a used promo copy of Black Label Society’s Alcohol Fueled Brewtality Live on CD and I happily listened to it for months on repeat. I formed lots of good memories with this album as the soundtrack. So I really had no choice but to pick up the new RSD vinyl release when I saw it at @soundrevolutionhtx last weekend. Sounds pretty good.
