i saw a tweet earlier today regarding barbie and oppenheimer and I realized how I haven't seen a lot of people talking about the potential anti-asian racism and whitewashing in the oppenheimer movie considering that it's a biopic set during world war 2 (tbf, I haven't gone through the oppenheimer tags on tumblr and twitter). I just know that those parts are gonna be overlooked due to being a Christopher Nolan movie
ok just for context i'm gonna paste the trailer for oppenheimer here
youtube
So I haven't talked about the inherent racism of making a tragic hero out of Oppenheimer on here but I want to clarify I'm not Asian and I'm not Japanese and I would like those voices prioritized here.
If you don't know much about Christopher Nolan besides yay batman movies... you gotta know a few things about him. Even in his batman trilogy he whitewashed nonwhite characters. Notably Ras Al Ghul, Talia Al Ghul and Bane. i'm not going to delve into how his movies besides tenet predominantly featured white casts. but just take that as a fact. Tenet was an exception not the general rule of his filmography.
Moving on for those that don't know about Oppenheimer I'm gonna refer you to a few wiki articles
First Oppenheimer
and now his legacy the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Even though I'm referring you largely to wikipedia articles you gotta understand followers that the casualty numbers are wrong on article
Tumblr media
mainly the bottom number of 129,000-226,000 killed.
Like that may not seem like much heck its not even the population of San Francisco. But you gotta understand that these numbers are wrong for the plain and simple fact that Japanese people around Hiroshima and Nagasaki also were affected with radiation and like chernobyl some died quick deaths and others died slow deaths. So you can't really put a number to that sort of devastation.
There's this narrative in the USA that in WWII we did everything possible to stop the nazis. But instead of focusing on the devastation of the bombings we're focusing on a tragic white man who from the beginning understood what this bomb would do??? Like yes he was haunted there's even this
Tumblr media
So like we have this narrative of a tragic antihero that saved us from war with the axis but then was haunted by what it had cost him. And what I can't understand is why we revere him so much. This is as much a movie about USAmerican ingenuity as it is about how poor widdle Oppenheimer created the most powerful weapons in history and was haunted by it.
I haven't seen it but its very telling that Nolan didn't choose to depict the horror of the bombings and instead the single tragic man that choose to create them.
honestly its sickening. because now Cillian is gonna get nominated for his role as Oppenheimer, they're going to shove it down our throats that old USAmerican propaganda that we needed to bomb the Japanese to stop the war even tho nazis were defeated already. the Japanese were still fighting but we had them out manned and out gunned.
Tumblr media
Don't let anyone tell you that this movie isn't propaganda.

I was tagged by @lunar-gltch in a getting to know you meme!! And I knew if I put off doing this until later I’d end up losing track of the meme in a sea of other posts/notifications/etc and never doing it (which happens a lot, I’m sorry), so here we go
LAST SONG
I.............. am not sure lmao. That’s not something I really keep track of unless I literally just listened to it a minute ago or have something I’m listening to on repeat
CURRENTLY READING
I just finished reading The Scarlet Gospels by Clive Barker. And on the comic book front, I just started reading Batman vs. Ra’s Al Ghul by Neal Adams. And frankly I think reading those two things back-to-back while also experiencing the stressed out mind-melt of a cat having emergency surgery (it went ok! and he’s home now, and he’s fine! but it’s been a wild and very sleepless few days) is An Experience (TM). Though at least I understood what was happening in The Scarlet Gospels. I sincerely have no idea what is happening in this comic book.
I also started reading Books of Blood Volume 6 (also by Clive Barker), which I probably should have read before Scarlet Gospels but I love doing things wildly out of order
CURRENTLY WATCHING
I’ve been making my way through Buster Keaton’s entire filmography and also have started watching Kamen Rider 1971 (though I haven’t watched much of either in the past week or so)
(if you write) CURRENTLY WRITING
I’ve been pecking at one of my batjokes fics after not writing much (or......... at all) for a couple months, so at my current pace I’ve calculated that I might actually get a new fic posted in approximately 35.9 years
tagging: Whoever feels like doing it!

And now for something old an' ummm, something older -- pretty soon (May 26th to be precise) marks “The Receiving of RA”, a ancient Egyptian Holiday – from waaaayyyy back when they were building the Pyramids an’ really seriously needed a holiday! Which brings us around to this bit of fractured filmography – For hours of fun (well, maybe a minute of fun) Can you spot how many Bogart movies are referenced?
Wednesday May 24: As no one else seems inclined to post an answer  -  in the final panel Katz mentions that Bogie is towing them to Martinique, the Caribbean Vichy French island where the 1944 film, "To have and have not" took place - and also where Bogie first met Lauren Bacall - so he's not doing too badly...
In 1946 Bob Clampet parodied the film in a Merrie Melodies carrtoon, "Bacall to Arms" (actually this was made at the point where Clampett left the studio, so it was finished by Arthur Davis)...

Bholaa Movie Abhishek Bachchan,Ajay Devgn,tabu,Deepak Dobriyal,Gajraj Ra...
Name: bholaa Director: Ajay Devgn Cast: Abhishek Bachchan,Ajay Devgn, tabu,Deepak Dobriyal,Gajraj Rao,Sanjay Mishra, vineet kumar IPS officer Diana (Tabu) seizes a truck loaded with Rs 1000 crore worth of cocaine owned by a drug lord, Ashwathama (Deepak Dobriyal). A series of events puts a prisoner, Bholaa (Ajay Devgn) in the midst of this fight between the cops and the gangsters. Bholaa shoulders the responsibility of saving the police community from the wrath of the drug lord, in lieu of getting support from the cops to ensure the well-being of his daughter. Does he succeed in doing so? All the action, drama and thrill will unfold when you watch Bholaa. The Ajay Devgn starrer is loaded with brilliantly choreographed action sequences which are sure to induce goosebumps. There are certain elevations that his character has got through the course of the film which stand out in the narrative. Watch out for the Trishul combat scene and the pre-interval block, which act as the main highlights of the film. The prolonged 6-minute bike chase sequence also keeps you on the edge of your seat and speaks volumes about Devgn’s calibre as a director to pull off a sleek action scene with conviction. Tabu’s entry sequence is also well designed. The film has been paced well in first half, but there are moments in the second half that feel like a slog through the course of its modest runtime. The story is easy to follow, but also predictable. Ajay doesn't disappoint on the directorial front and is mostly in control of the subject matter as a director, however the screenplay could have been better. The comic portions are decent. Ajay Devgn essays his role of Bholaa very well. He has great body language and commands a solid screen presence. His confrontation sequences with the villains are among the major highlights. He aces the action sequences like a boss. Bholaa is yet another strong performance in Ajay Devgn's illustrious filmography.

My friend just randomly messaged me about Bridgerton (which I don’t watch) and after a few minutes she asks if I watched House of Anubis because she thinks one of the Bridgerton girls was in it but can’t remember who.
This occurred as I was scrolling through the HOA tag. I think it’s a sign ya bitch needs to rewatch

2021 Kdrama Year in Review
2021 has been a very mixed year for me as far as drama watching goes. I started by watching at least 3 shows simultaneously and now I'm ending with watching maybe 1 episode a week, if I remember to. (Wheel of Time, in case you're wondering :D) .
On the kdrama side, I think I've probably dropped more dramas than I finished, especially ones that aired this year. I didn't get past two episodes of Sisyphyus: The Myth (sob!my Cho Seung-woo loving heart is a desert) and I dropped Jirisan post episode 10 (more sobbing for Kim Eun-hee nim and the Jujubes); Reflection of You seemed like a promising lesbian-arthouse drama, but poisoned itself with heterosexuality early on, and I had to drop it despite Shin Hyun-been's prodigious, chameleon-like talent and Go Hyun-jung's everything.
I discovered, binged on and loved 2020's Hospital Playlist season 1 this year, and then was incredibly disappointed by the lacklustre season 2 (except by the music, Let's Forget It is my top song of the year).
Another "oldie" that I watched this year was 2019's "Melo is my Nature" which I've written about here, and which really is THE perfect rom com, and in conjunction with 2021's Run On made me think that kdrama romances needn't suck. But the sensibilities of these two and 2020's Into the Ring (reviewed here) are more the exception than the rule in this genre, I've found.
For reasons that don't need explaining at this juncture, around mid-year, I decided that kdrama romances and the associated fandom were Very Much Not For Me, which basically put about 60% of what gets aired and is accessible to me out of my to-watch list; in a move I can only describe as a self-goal, I then went ahead and watched twenty hours of 2014's Fated to Love You anyway. On the plus side, this definitely cured any lingering temptation to watch kdrama romance while also making me root for the Jang (squared) Heist-Romance drama that surely somebody, somewhere is writing the script for even at this moment. The power of the Jangs cannot and should not be denied. (as an aside, someday I should probably write the meta on the line between Jang Na Ra's character in FTLY and Kim Shin-ah's character in Chief of Staff as a meditation on the more-things-change-the-more-they-stay-the-same on the merry-go-round of misogyny)
I thought Move to Heaven and Squid Game existed on a continuum of butter-smooth Netflix era kdrama: easy to consume and easy to forget; Hellbound, later in the year, was more of the same. I've forgiven The Silent Sea a lot of its, hmm, gonna go with lack-of-smartness, for the incomparable Bae Doona, which is obviously entirely reasonable of me; but if you're going to watch a space themed Korean media product for the year, please let it be the ridiculously fun and marshmallow-soft movie Space Sweepers. (KIM TAE RI, KIM TAE RI, KIM TAE RI etc)
In the crime/ thriller/ political genre, which became my go-to dramas once I factored out romance, I found two of the year's biggest hits Beyond Evil and The Devil Judge banal in their world view and mediocre-to-bad on almost every other count- script, editing, performances. If you must pick one to watch, Beyond Evil is better by leaps and bounds, not the least because it does have outstanding performances- Gil Hae-yeon as a corrupt, abusive councilwoman and Choi Dae-hoon as her traumatized son; Choi Seung-un is a star and I hope I will get to see her in something good really soon!
I really enjoyed 2020's Nobody Knows, not the least because Kim Seo-hyung in turtle-necks and long coats is clearly our reward for surviving this life. If you're catching up with Lee Jung-jae's filmography post Squid Game, 2019's Chief of Staff isn't bad as a political drama, though Lee Jung-jae's stardom quite obviously warped the entire thing, in the same way that it did Squid Game's ending.
So! Best dramas of 2021?
In the order that I watched them:
Run On
This is a series I became more fond of in hindsight than while I was actually watching it! I think that's because the entire plotless, feelings-only vibe is a bit difficult to sustain in a continuously engaging way over 16 episodes; a lot of the quirkiness of the series relied on its dialogue, which I think, didn't always translate well into English (no shade on the translators, who are obviously doing the best they can in demanding circumstances). Some of my tension with the series came from a ham-handed Schrödinger's lesbian subplot for one of the characters- that part dimmed my enjoyment of a series that was, I thought ,fundamentally queer in its worldview. But! once it was done, I was able to savour its ambition and its main conceit- pulling off a "rom com" that's actually about two people falling in love with themselves as much as each other, while avoiding the pitfall of navel-gazing whinginess in the characters. This is a show that's got a very soft heart, and doesn't mind showing it: what else is life for, it seems to ask, if not for choosing to be kind to ourselves as much as others, if not to show our love and revel in giving and receiving it?
Mine
I've written a long-ish review here about everything that I loved about this genre-defying series, and I don't have anything more to add to that, except to say, watch it and thank me later!
Deserter Pursuit
This is probably the most obviously hard to watch, given its subject matter. I think what I essentially enjoyed about the show is that it knew what it wanted to say and said it well. It's not experimental in aesthetics or story structure and its emotional beats are predictable. But the familiarity of these things doesn't detract from your emotional and intellectual experience of the story- a trick that Squid Game didn't quite pull off, imho-instead it allows you to have just enough of a safety net that allows you to separate the fictional from the factual; the show offers you catharsis without absolution- a pretty difficult thing to pull off, usually, in stories about war. Jung Hae-in is currently in some kind of drama jail for Snowdrop, I think (?) but I enjoyed him in this; though the real revelation for me was Koo Kyo-hwan who should clearly be in all of the things, all of the time.
Inspector Koo
I've been resisting writing a review of this, because I...don't know how to? Inspector Koo's charm lies partly in its outlandish premise and plot, it's zany, theater-esque screenplay and performances, and mostly in its self-aware, utterly joyful enjoyment of its own absurdity. It's a show that's deeply painful but also absolutely hilarious; a show about being women in a post Me Too, post truth, post-everything world; when our species is hurtling towards its inevitable end, is there any point to an individual pulling themselves out of a landfill? And that too, for some arguably quaint- perhaps even archaic- idea of justice? Koo Kyung-yi (Lee Young-ae) and Song Yi-kyung (Kim Hye-jun) are harlequins in our late-capitalist theatre; beneath their comedy is unspeakable tragedy, truth that's only palatable if you approach it sideways, or in secret, private places, in dark woods, or in dreams where you throw yourself from a moving car or face it with a shotgun, (like Kim Hae-sook in a mindblowing performance as Director Yong). "Rookie" writer team Chung So-yi and director Lee Jung-hyeum barely make a misstep in the show; the performances are uniformly engaging, with a special shout out to Kim Hye-jun who's an actual movie star; Lee Young-ae's years of experience show in her equal parts-wacky-yet-restrained and deeply emotional performance, and oh, yes, my fave fave fave Kwak Sun-young gets to shine as Koo Kyung-yi's best friend, co-conspirator, sometimes-betrayer and love interest (fight me!). In short- if there's one kdrama you're going to watch in the last three days of this year, let it be this one!

Recently watched: Voyage of the Rock Aliens (1984). Tagline: “the story of a guy, a girl and an alien... and one night they will always remember!” I’m using this period of enforced social isolation to explore the weirder corners of YouTube for long forgotten and obscure movies. (My boyfriend is accompanying me only semi-willingly).
Incomprehensible. Stultifying. Bizarre. Botched! In the early eighties, former child actress, cherub-faced starlet and “triple threat” Pia Zadora reigned as the undisputed queen of bad movies. (Her filmography-from-hell includes crimes-against-cinema like Fake-out (1982) and The Lonely Lady (1983)). Enduring the 97-minute duration of misbegotten low-budget New Wave musical comedy Voyage of the Rock Aliens certainly justifies how Zadora earned that title. (Note: don’t confuse Voyage of the Rock Aliens with Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (1968) – an entirely different but equally terrible film starring that earlier queen of bad movies, Mamie Van Doren).
Voyage was calculatedly formulated to promote Zadora as a viable pop siren in the vein of Madonna or Cyndi Lauper. In fact, it opens with an epic rock video for “When the Rain Begins to Fall”, Zadora’s hi-NRG disco duet with Jermaine Jackson. The video has that artfully distressed post-apocalyptic / post-punk look typical of the era (it’s hard to overstate the stylistic influence of Mad Max in the eighties). Seemingly tacked-on at random, the video bears zero relation to what unfolds next. How to explain Voyage of the Rock Aliens? According to Wikipedia, its scriptwriter conceived it as a deliberately campy tongue-in-cheek spoof hybrid of fifties and sixties b-movie genres. A postmodern mash-up of science fiction, beach party musicals, monster movies and rock’n’roll juvenile delinquent flicks sounds potentially amusing in more competent hands, but the conception and execution here is frankly - if cheerfully - inept.
Zany hijinks, wacky misunderstandings and “what-the-fuck” moments ensue when a group of rock’n’roll-crazed aliens (styled to vaguely resemble Devo) land their guitar-shaped spaceship on earth and try to ingratiate themselves with the local teenagers of a town called Speelburg. Voyage’s tone is established with an introductory Beach Blanket Bingo-style musical number. The song is grating. The choreography is clunky. The weather is visibly overcast and chilly. Some of the “high schoolers” are seemingly well into their late twenties. To be fair, it does offer a time capsule of eighties fashion trends: it’s a veritable day-glo riot of ra-ra skirts, crimped hair, fingerless lace gloves and wraparound sunglasses. Dee Dee (Zadora) yearns to sing with her boyfriend Frankie’s band (Frankie and The Pack) at their high school’s upcoming cotillion. But surly delinquent hoodlum Frankie (Craig Sheffer) is such a selfish, insecure jerk he won’t let her. (This scenario reminded me of Lucy constantly wanting to crash Ricky’s stage show in old episodes of I Love Lucy). The leader of the aliens (Tom Nolan) develops a crush on Dee Dee and has no qualms about her joining his band, inciting Frankie’s jealousy.
Proceedings are padded-out with some annoying sub-plots. Two homicidal killers escape from a high security mental facility. The eccentric elderly female sheriff investigates the town’s UFO sighting. (This surely represents an unseemly career low for Academy Award-winning veteran character actress Ruth Gordon of Rosemary’s Baby and Harold and Maude fame). There’s also a sea monster whose tentacle pops up at random and is never explained. Storytelling coherence isn’t one of Voyage’s strengths: it frequently feels like some pages have gone missing from the script, or some crucial explanatory scenes have been accidentally deleted.
Anyway, Zadora gamely tackles the acting, singing and dancing with more enthusiasm than skill. Frankie’s bandmates are played by a genuine Los Angeles psychobilly band called Jimmy and The Mustangs - a poor man’s Stray Cats, although it must be said they do provide eye candy in their mesh t-shirts and studded leather biker jackets. Speaking of which: pouting young pretty boy Craig Sheffer’s Frankie is filmed like an escapee from an eighties gay porn film, with a homoerotic focus on his sinewy torso and painted-on black jeans. With horrible symmetry, Voyage concludes by reprising “When the Rain Begins to Fall” (with Scheffer lip-syncing to Jermaine Jackson’s vocals) with some of the most half-assed green screen technology ever captured on celluloid. Clearly the filmmakers had stopped caring by then. Problem is, you will have too!
Voyage of the Rock Aliens is FREE to view on Amazon Prime. Watch the trailer here.

The comic is a nice idea, but personally i wish Miranda new Adventures for her career and definitely not a caos reboot. Unfortunatley some fans seem to only see this role and not the actress behind it. She deserves new interesting big projects and to work with great directors on characters with better storylines and more depth.
I’m conflicted. On the one hand, I would love to see CAOS come back if someone besides Roberto were writing it. Basically, I only want it back if they fire RAS and hire a competent writing staff, which I know is unlikely to happen.
I definitely agree that Miranda Otto is more than just the role of Zelda, and if she decides not to sign on to the reboot in a few years, I won’t blame her one bit. But as for the fans currently being excited about Miranda possibly returning to Zelda in the future, I don’t think it’s quite fair to equate that excitement to people being blind to her other talents. Miranda has already gone on to do four more projects since the end of CAOS, and she has a large filmography that precedes Zelda. I personally don’t think anyone is saying that Miranda’s only talent lies in playing Zelda, as a lot of fans know her first and foremost as Eowyn to begin with.
In the two or three years (or 4, 5, 6) it will take for Netflix to relinquish the rights to the live-action version of CAOS, I’m sure Miranda will have worked on plenty of new and interesting projects. If she continues to film new things at the same pace she’s currently doing it, we’ll probably have eight or more new projects to consume before Miranda ever gets handed a script for the CAOS reboot. She’ll have worked with plenty of great directors and colleagues in that time, and hopefully will have been given material worthy of her talent.
This is all to say: yes, Miranda is more than just the role of Zelda, and we should definitely consider the possibility that Miranda herself might not want to reprise her role, but I think it’s far more likely that by the time the reboot would logistically happen, Miranda will have done so many new things, that it might be a welcome change to return to Zelda (especially if she gets to do the storylines that she always felt would be “endgame”). I get the sense that Miranda felt cheated at the end of Part Four, and it’s entirely possible that she would sign back on if the show allowed her to do what she wants with the role the second time around.
At the end of the day, I have no special insight into Miranda's career choices, but i know from press that she seems to consider the CAOS cast and crew as good as family. i don't think she would consider it a hardship to reprise her role if it meant seeing all of her friends (family) again, especially if she's already finished a bunch of new projects that possibly satisfied her need for doing different roles.

No one sent me any asks for the most recent ask game but I decided on some voices anyway for 6. Headcanon VA.
Borgakh I generally imagine with a French Accent based on how I played her in our d&d game. I’ve been speaking french all my life, and I wanted to do something different at the table. Still, I’m going to go with Regina King. Here’s an 8 minute interview / Badass Questionnaire she filled out this year / was posted just a few days ago, it’s a really fun watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCMqEjDqnBU
Faedolyn I picture as sounding like the default Byleth voice, but deeper, speaking in a more slow and measured way to align with the silent protagonist elements of fe3h rather than the voiced elements of combat. I’m saying they sound like Orla Brady, who I selected based on sounding just enough like me / with an accent I definitely fall into when I’m speaking with people from Ireland / when my really, real customer service voice comes out. Here’s an old speech from a version of Wurthering Heights to try and capture a younger voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR64mE3iGPc And here’s an interview about Doctor Who from 2013 for a more recent clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXpGYjHwRcY
Étoile I might even be fine identifying as the default voice actor in bg3, but there’s so few voiced lines in cutscenes ... I actually couldn’t pick out who that is or what they sound like. So I went looking at indigenous actors, and I really liked Tatanka Means’ voice. Unfortunately his filmography is ... not great. But I’m going to include a link for an ad for Tiger Eyes so you can hear his voice with a professional microphone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdqMpHvlA7s And a link for an interview where he talks about how he’ll come to an casting and they expect him to “speak indian” and he’s spoken at least 5 different indigenous languages for movies and shows, and sometimes will still lose the job to a pretendian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKVhEEO5_CY
Arilemn I picture as having a raspy, squeaky voice, and even in the information I gave my DM about them, I referenced AJ Michalka because of her performance as Catra in the recent Netflix She-Ra show. Here’s the link I gave to my DM for a compilation of her being mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXnKhn7ERJ0
Jay’s setting is classy and I pictured their voice as much the same. Rhythmic, even if they don’t sing. Maybe I should describe their setting some time, but really only I and two or three other people know the details of it because it’s indulgent and personal. For reasons related to that setting and their past though, I’m choosing Gladys Knight. Here’s a lovely interview of her and The Pips from 1973: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y7lgB7fXhc Here’s a remaster of Midnight Train to Georgia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4KZs0mLJiQ

Okay I’m probably the only one who care about this but I was watching Scooby Doo, and thought one of the voices sounded like Azula, and it turns out the voice actress of Azula has been in a LOT of animated tv shows/movies.
Grey DeLisle played Azula in Avatar along with Kya, Ta Min, Actress Katara and of course the servant Azula herself banished.
Tumblr media
She’s also in the Legend of Korra as young Lin Beifong, Lilly, Dark Spirit, Spirit Mushroom, Dark Scorpion Spirit, Kuon’s Wife and Ming Hua
She voices Daphne in Scooby Doo among many other side characters. She has multiple roles in The Fairly OddParents, Rugrats, The Powerpuff Girls, Danny Phantom, Gravity Falls and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
She voices Asajj Ventress in Star Wars: Clone Wars, Queen Butterfly and Jackie Lynn Thomas in Star vs. the Forces of Evil and more characters in each respective show.
And trust me, there are many MANY more characters that she’s played in popular shows and movies. This is just a FEW. Here’s a link to Grey DeLisle’s filmography page on Wikipedia if you want to check out everything she’s been in (and I recommend you do).
