Storia Di Musica #272 - Thin Lizzy, Black Rose: A Rock Legend, 1979
Still In Love With You.

A Past Echoed in New Beginnings
Róisín Dubh, the Black Rose of the Feywild, was settling into her dorm room - it smelt of dust and aged stone. Ink stained fingers meticulously placed her belongings in their place on the provided desk and within the set of draws. She placed her small collection of herbs in the window sill, taking time to tend to each of them and thanking them for making the journey. Her connection to the natural world was not as strong as that of a druid but she was not without her affinity for it. She thanked each of the herbs for being so brave as they traveled amongst the giants for these last few months. She took a seat on her bed and allowed a sigh of relaxation as she fell onto her side, closing her eyes and allowing her thoughts to drift. She saw visions of her past life.
Ruadhán Dubh, the Red-Haired, was the eldest son in a noble Faerie bloodline stretching back to a lover of Titania, the Queen of Light and Summer - cousin to Lady Shandria, the current leader of the great Eladrin city, Astrazalian. This is where Ruadhán had spent most of his days, in the city between realms - splitting its time between material and fey. Knowledge of both worlds forged his education of the realms, giving him a wide perspective on the connections between them. He learned of magics, trades, history, and tales of the domains, regions, and realms that made up the World Axis. Another feature of this divided upbringing was the difference each realm had on time and distance, making it rather difficult for Ruadhán to be sure of his own age - though he knew himself to be an adult. It was an ideal life of luxury and privilege but it was not a life that Ruadhán felt joy in - the Feywild would make colors, emotions, thoughts, feelings, and magics so much more vibrant due to its very nature being suffused with magic. However, in recent years Ruadhán only felt a growing despair and that feeling only felt amplified during his time in Feywild. It wasn’t until he began seeking his purpose, did he gain the knowledge that would permanently shift the course of his life.
Róisín rose from her bed and began to organize the last few of her possessions. The half dozen or so books she’d taken with her, mostly filled with her sketches and unfinished poems along with a few more informative tomes. They didn't even fill the first shelf of the small dark wood bookcase that sat in the corner of her room. She sorted and resorted her papers, quills and pens on her desk in some attempt at organization. The only other spare robe she had brought with her was hung in the closet, leaving most of the space empty. The room felt…cold and bare. It filled Roísín with a sense of discomfort and she committed herself to finding some decorations to bring life to this stone box. At that thought she remembered the last rooms she’d called her own…
Ruadhán had always taken a fascination in magic of all kinds and was also dedicated to the study of combat. Lady Shandria had inspired him to want to protect what was important to him. She was often referred to as a warlord, though rarely to her face, but he had always seen her as the protector of Astrazalian. He admired her and had taken every chance in his upbringing to study her work and speak with her on rare occasions. One day he dreamt of being able to protect what was important to him, though he was not sure of what that was. However, he knew he admired her and wanted to be like the mighty leader of Astrazalian. As Ruadhán delved further and further into his study of magic, weaponry, and the realms; in an attempt to escape the fear and despair that grew in his heart with each passing year, he learned of the magics of the Shadowfell. It too served as a mirror of the Material Plane much like the Feywild, but the magic was twisted, dark but undeniably alluring to the young faerie. He became fixated on the study of this place and found mention of Hexblades, an arcane spellcaster who combined magical power with martial skill. Interest led to fixation which quickly turned to obsession as Ruadhán believed becoming a Hexblade and dedicating himself to the Raven Queen, the Dark Mother of the Shadowfell would allow him to be what he truly wanted - to be a blade to protect what was important to him. He would ask her to give him this, he would ask for what his heart most desired and this was what he most desired, right? It had to be. So, as the cycle to the half year in the Material Plane grew closer, he made his preparations to contact her. He knew that there was no connection to the Shadowfell from the Feywild so he must take action while in the Material Plane. On the first day of Astrazalian’s presence in the material plane, he called upon the Raven Queen asking for her to give him what he most desired in exchange for his service, but he heard no reply. Again and again, he would repeat his pleas for answers but she did not offer him any sign of interest. Ruadhán had come apart at the seams, unsure of why the Dark Mother would not grace him with her presence so that he may be right by her. On the final night of that cycle in the Material Plane, Ruadhán took drastic measures and placed himself at the brink of death. He had stopped eating, leaving his room, and had become entirely dedicated to the study. In an act of desperation he attempted the ultimate act of loyalty - there he sat in a pool of blood, the world growing darker around him. caw A noise. What was it? caw caw There it was again, somewhere in the hazy and the gloom. His heavy eyes drifted to the window, illuminated by a night sky sat a raven with piercing red eyes. “I will have you as my Blade, serve me well, my Black Rose,” it echoed as a lost melody that sent a chill through Ruadhán and everything faded to darkness. The pact had been forged.
Róisín listened but it seemed that her roommates had not yet arrived. She took a seat at her desk, dipped her long black raven feather quill into the ink bottle and began to write a poem…or would it be a story, she never knew what it would end up being when she picked up her quill. However, she still began to write all the same.
Ruadhán awoke the next morning, feeling more alive than he ever had. As he came to, he took note of the dried blood that covered the floor. Looking toward the window he saw no messenger, only the twilight of the Feywild. It was only when he turned away from the soft light that the long soft red, no - pink locks entered his sight. In a moment, he came to his senses. He ran to the shards of shatter glass that once stood as a full length mirror. A stranger looked back at him, from the shard in his hand. She had soft features, long pinkish hair, gray skin slightly speckled with black freckles. But his eyes…her eyes? They were the most distinct feature, large gray windows into this world - he…no, not he…she knew their purpose. She was to be the eyes for the Dark Mother. Next she came to realize his…her height, he had shrunken though only slightly. Then there was the matter of his…her wings, which had been those of a beautiful blue butterfly, had been replaced by ones of a pale green with small circular patterns, the wings of a Luna moth. He…she had asked to be crafted into a Blade to protect what was important…no, she had asked for what she most desired. Slowly, she walked on new legs to the center of the room which had been torn apart by her descent into maddening darkness - she took hold of the blade she had used to take her old life. It was stained red but she could still see herself, her true self, reflected in it. She swore herself to the Dark Mother and it felt as though this blade was perfectly made for her hand - she twisted it around with ease and felt a smile creep across her face with delight. This would be her first thorn. “Thank you my Queen,” she uttered softly, “I shall prove to be a loyal Blade, never shall I falter, bend or break. I shall be your Black Rose~”
Róisín wrote the tale of a lost prince of the Feywild - a noble who had given everything for happiness. You see, a noble ‘falling’ to dark magic and desires, rang too similar to the Queen of Air and Darkness - the sister of Queen Titania who stood to symbolize the corruption that they feared awaited all fey. They said that, ‘Once, the Queen of Air and Darkness was the sister of Queen Titania, ruler of the fey, in the land of Ladinion. But one day a group of dwarves, who had been mining in a mountain to the south, brought to the Seelie Court a great, ten-faceted black diamond they had found as a gift for the fey queen. However, Titania was away swimming that day so her sister accepted the gift. This diamond began to corrupt her, transforming her nature, and one day she took the diamond and other magical treasures and left in a chariot of smoke and fire that was said to have appeared out of the sky. Some time later the mountain that the dwarves were mining exploded, slaying the dwarves and causing sickening smoke to cover the land.’ The noble was stripped of their title and left under threat of violence. The last remnants of their family saw them only through the lens of disgust, confusion and pity. Those stares and comments would haunt the noble for many nights to come. However, no longer would the noble waste away in the dark, instead taking to exploring the Feywild, Feydark, and eventually the Material plane. They had been gifted with new eyes and with them saw beauty in these worlds. Traveling amongst the common folks, learning from the peoples of nature, finding comradery amongst thieves in the darkest of places, and most recently exploring herself amongst the artisan Stone Giants. A desire for knowledge and a letter of acceptance fueled the noble to seek out a place of proper study. And finally, she had arrived.
Róisín stopped her writing at the sound of the door to the common area opening, it was time to meet her new roommates.

“Róisín Dubh” (pronounced Ro-sheen dove or Ro-sheen doo, meaning “Dark Rose”), written in the 16th century, is one of Ireland’s most famous political songs. It is based on an older love-lyric which referred to the poet’s beloved rather than, as here, being a metaphor for Ireland. The intimate tone of the original carries over into the political song. It is often attributed to Antoine Ó Raifteiri, but almost certainly predates him. Originally translated from the Irish language by James Clarence Mangan, this translation is credited to Pádraig Pearse.
