#dead heat #american cinema #horror imagery tw #1988 #mark goldblatt #terry black #treat williams #joe piscopo #lindsay frost #darren mcgavin #vincent price #clare kirkconnell #keye luke #robert picardo #mel stewart #professor toru tanaka #peter kent #date night movie #look‚ i read about a buddy cop action zombie splatter film featuring Vincent Price‚ I'm gonna have to watch it. that's just how it is.#I'm not proud. this is supremely stupid but also kind of enjoyable; our two leads are literally 2 of the worst‚ most dangerous cops ever to #play hero in american cinema (so probably the most authentic aspect of the film). when one of them gets killed and resurrected they decide #to look into this whole zombie thing and get some JUSTICE‚ all while delivering truly horrible one liners and objectifying every woman in #sight. the leads are genuinely pretty horrible (particularly Piscopo‚ who's apparently an ass in real life too) but the plot is just dumb #and original enough to be entertaining. plus you have my boy Vinny‚ old hand McGavin‚ and some genuinely astonishing fx (there's a body #melt style scene which has to be seen to be believed‚ honestly very impressive in a gross way). things get surprisingly bleak and grim and #the body count is higher than most war films‚ but Vincent is a treasure and I've watched worse for him (and I'll do it again damn it!)#contains one highly entertaining scene of two undead guys firing machineguns into one another for waaayy too long #also the plot gets a bit gappy in places; isuspect this was cut fairly heavily by the studio bc honestly some of it just doesn't make sense

Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985)

This is Tim Burton’s directorial feature debut. I kind of love that.

Large Marge is 100% the best part of this movie.

Dinosaurs are a recurring theme in this film:

[3:30] In Pee-wee's bedroom when he's lifting weights right after he gets out of bed, there is a toy Tyrannosaurus rex on the window sill behind him

[3:39] When Pee-wee is pushing the toy fire truck just before he runs over Mr Potato Head with it, there is a giant dinosaur head to his left

[3:51] When he slides down the pole in his house, there is a silhouette of a brontosaurus in the translucent glass

[4:35] At Pee-wee's house, a toy pterodactyl on a clothesline-esque string carries bread to a toaster.

[5:15] A toy Tyrannosaurus Rex squeezes an orange to make orange juice

[7:34] at Pee-wee's house, a silhouette of a dinosaur can be seen on the glass next to the sliding pole, somewhat of a foreshadowing.

[43:08] The one every fan knows about: When Pee-wee gets off Large Marge's truck, the dinosaurs in the film are an actual tourist attraction.

Certainly I was familiar with the basic beats and plot points but then like a lot of Arnie #Films this has become something of a pop culture touchstone. On watching again (date night movie) it actually stands up pretty well #Oh sure it is meathead action nonsense and sure Arnie's one liners are pretty horrendous. But it's fun! Is it successful as a critique of #Consumer culture and trash TV? Not entirely but it at least has a go. Playing on long established tropes (with nods to The Most Dangerous #Game and Kneale's Year of the Sex Olympics) the film invites us to imagine a far flung future dystopia (2019..) in which uhhhhh there has #Been an economic crash and oil reserves are running dangerously low whilst the rich live in skyscrapers and the poor struggle to feed #Themselves and the police react with indiscriminate violence. So. Yeah. Pretty... Hard to imagine.. That.. Cough. Perhaps the most #Disturbing element of this film (certainly the most perplexing) is that the last forces of resistance are led by... Mick Fleetwood?!#Apparently playing himself?! I mean his character is called Mic and he refers to his music career... They even did a pretty good job of #Aging him up to look like his 2019 self‚ albeit with rather more hair than he actually retained. Also Dweezil Zappa is his right hand man?!
