My posts

We have had another Trespasser Weirdness Incident at my house, so. Suffice it to say that the Hot & Vintage Movie Women tournament is my primary coping mechanism at this point, and bless @hotvintagepoll for all their work. All 257 polls are up, although many of them have already closed on a rolling basis these last two weeks. Hedy Lamarr vs Sonja Henie was the very last one, and it is a blowout like I have not seen since the time I asked if people throw away their movie theater trash. I think round 2 starts a week from Monday? I would like to apologize for reblogging every single poll, except that I’m not the least bit sorry.

I posted propaganda several times--sometimes just because a contestant didn’t have much and I wanted to chip in (still in play: Juanita Moore and Martha Sleeper). But I also showed up specifically for Norma Shearer, Claire Bloom, Tallulah Bankhead, Deborah Kerr, a little bit for Joan Fontaine (poll here), Julie Christie (on my mom’s behalf), Gene Tierney, Paulette Goddard, and Ava Gardner. My loyalties will shift as we see who progresses, but I'm wearing the Ava jersey at this point.

The Jewish filmmakers who won an Oscar for The Zone of Interest, a Holocaust film, used their speech time to condemn what’s happening in Gaza. (It helps to read the quote as “as men who refute {their Jewishness and the Holocaust} being used as justification.” “Refute their Jewishness” jumps out weirdly at first glance and confused people.)

I can’t tell if the JKR defender/Holocaust denier in this ask knows they’re lying or just really didn’t know that transgender health books and surgery did, in fact, exist, and that the Nazis targeted them. The ache in her arm steadily grew worse, the claw marks starting to throb. Mike had helped her clean the blood from her skin, turning on the shower so she could stick her arm under the spray. The water flowing over the wounds had nearly driven her to tears, the nerves raw and angry. He pulled her to his chest as the water irrigated the wounds, guiding her breathing by taking deep breaths of his own and letting them out slowly. Once her arm was dry, he spread antibiotic ointment on gauze pads and pressed them to her arm, wrapping more gauze around it to keep them in place.

A strange sort of restless energy started building in her muscles and she found herself pacing, shaking and clenching and unclenching her hand. She knew they were watching her, could feel their eyes on her, but it didn't feel threatening. Introductions had been made. The one Sy called "Walker" was August Walker, the one with the shock white hair and amber eyes was Geralt Rivian, and Walter Marshall was the one with a halo of dark curls and a thick beard. Sy's full name was Markus Syverson, but everyone, even his brother, called him Sy. Stephanie got the feeling that August didn't want her there, despite him saying she could stay until her…transformation was complete. He wasn't hostile towards her, just severely uninterested. Sy, Mike, and Walter were the most outwardly welcoming and supportive. Geralt seemed…indifferent.

"Okay," Mike said, "I hate awkward silences. Steph, what's your favorite movie?"

"Michael." August said.

"If she's gonna be staying here, we might as well get to know her." Mike said.

"She's not staying." August reminded him and Mike flashed him an annoyed look before turning his attention back to her as she paced.

"Favorite movie?" He asked and she stretched her neck with a roll of her head.

"What genre?" She asked.

"Horror." Sy said.

"The Haunting."

"Julie Harris or Liam Neeson?" Walter asked.

"I saw the remake first and the original later, I like both." She said.

"Favorite band." Mike said.

"What genre?" She asked again and he pulled a small smile.

"Metal?"

"Motionless in White." She said.

"Classic rock." Sy said.

"Toss up between Queen and Journey, Eagles are up there too."

"Classical." Walter said.

"Love Vivaldi and Beethoven. Mozart's Requiem is also a big hit, but not Tuba Mirum."

"Going back to movies," Mike said, "Favorite action flick."

"The second Die Hard with Jeremy Irons."

"Musical?" Walter asked.

"2004 Phantom of the Opera with Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, and Patrick Wilson." She said.

"Creature feature." Geralt said.

"Toss up between Tremors: Aftershocks and Pitch Black."

"Classic movie." August asked and her eyes, which had been closed, opened and she fixed him with a look at his sudden interest.

"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, 1947 starring Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney."

"Favorite food." Mike said.

"Japanese anything, and fried cheese."

"Favorite color." Sy said.

"Purple and black."

“Black isn’t a color.” August said.

“Don’t be pedantic.” She said simply and he scowled at her.

"Asmr?" Mike asked.

"Asmr drives me up a wall. I don't understand how people can get enjoyment out of the sounds of someone taking a bite of something crunchy or tapping on a microphone with fake nails. Pisses me off." She said and stretched her shoulders, but stopped with a wince as it aggravated her arm.

“How’s it feelin’?” Sy asked.

“Sore.” She said simply and he pushed away from the wall he was leaning against, going over to her.

“Let me see, doll.” He said and gently took her arm in his hands, pushing up her t-shirt sleeve that was stiff with blood. Unwrapping it gently, he pulled the gauze pads away from it and growled slightly as he saw the ragged claw marks tearing open the skin. It had stopped bleeding, thankfully, but dark lines of corruption branched off from the ruined skin. The skin around the wounds was warm and she winced as he pressed on them, making him mumble an apology. “Upside is, the infection will keep everything else out and it should heal without a scar to show for it.”

“Downside?” She asked, looking up at him.

“Downside is that there is an infection.” He said, “Feral infected you on purpose, couldn’t tell you why. Normally they just kill people. Don’t know why he bothered datin’ you first.”

“Gee thanks.”

“Nothin’ against you, doll, it’s just how ferals are.” Sy said and she nodded, “Seein’ as it stopped bleedin’ and ain’t at risk of goin’ south, we can probably keep it uncovered, but if it starts up again, let one of us know and we’ll wrap it up.”

“Okay.” She said with a nod and he carefully pulled her sleeve back down.

“We should probably get some of your things if you’re going to be staying here.” Walter suggested. “Do you live far?”

“Town over.” Stephanie said and he nodded. “Was camping though when shit went down, if he didn’t get rid of them to cover his tracks, the stuff I brought should still be there.”

“You can show me.” Geralt said, “We’ll bring them back here.”

“I can--”

“No.” Geralt said, “He might be there waiting for you. You’re not going alone.” He let his arms fall from where they had been folded over his chest. “Come on.”

“I didn’t exactly run in a straight line.” Stephanie said, “Do you have a map or something I can look at?”

“Not needed.” Geralt said, shaking his head. “I can track your scent back through the forest.”

“Okay, then.” She said.

“You want me to come with you, sweetheart?” Sy asked.

“No, it’s fine, it should be fine.” Stephanie said.

“Geralt will keep you safe, don’t worry.” Sy said and she nodded, following Geralt as he left the cabin and headed for the tree line.

A guide to hockey nicknames

It’s hockey season my friends, and as a true Canadian who’s spent the last little while glued to the WJC and watching the leafs get sniped day after day, I’ve obviously been thinking about hockey nicknames.

So naturally, I decided to create this little guide. Drop what your hockey nickname would be, I’d love to read them!

Most of the time your main nickname depends on your last name, but there are many nicknames based on first names too.

Most common nicknames based on last names are a shortened version of the name accompanied by an -Sey/ Sie, or a simple S or E

Examples:

Connor Bedard- Bedsey

Michael Bunting - Bunts

My Week(s) in Reviews: December 31, 2023

My last post of 2023! Gonna make this quick-ish, but stay tuned, because sometime in the coming week I'm going to start posting My Best of 2023... Starting with My Most Anticipated Films of 2024. So yeah, be on the lookout for that. Anyway, here's what I've been watching...

Poor Things (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2023)

So damn good, but also significantly overlong. I hate that Emma Stone’s odds are going down, as she delivers what will likely remain a favorite ‘til the end of the decade. Mark Ruffalo is also a blast, and also deserves the win. I honestly didn’t think he still had a performance like this in him. Dafoe is magnificently weird, and every time he graced the screen was a treat. Yorgos went off, here. This is probably his best work yet, despite being in need of some serious trimming. It’s also one of the most visually interesting films of the year. I just loved how this movie was shot. And it’s very easily better than the book. So, y’know, there’ that too. - 8.5/10

Saltburn (Emerald Fennell, 2023)

Awkwardly overwritten but exquisitely shot and weirdly intoxicating. There's no character, here, that's less than detestable, and I kinda loved it. - 7/10

The Iron Claw (Sean Durkin, 2023)

This would’ve been better if they’d had all of the actual wrestling happen off-screen. It would’ve cut the bloated running-time without affecting its emotional heft. Sean Dunkin did great work, though, and captured these brothers’ relationships in such an emotionally raw manner. Maura Tierney quietly delivered the film’s most gutting performance. Well, kinda, but not really, because Zac Efron seriously impressed. I didn’t know he had this level of emotional fragility in him as an actor. Damn. - 8/10

Maestro (Bradley Cooper, 2023)

Structurally flawed and occasionally over-directed, but both Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan knock it out of the park, and that major conducting scene was absolutely breathtaking. - 7.5/10

Saw X (Kevin Greutert, 2023)

So, what, Jigsaw's like a Dexter-type anti-hero, now? I don't know, maybe that's not new, it's been a while since I've seen one of these. The violence is creative and painful enough to make it worth watching, especially with how awful the people are. Nothing special. It's torture-porn at its most reliable, maybe? I don't know. - 6/10

Past Lives (Celine Song, 2023)

I can see why people are taking to this one, but aside from the general yearning for the nostalgic hitting home, this didn't do too much for me. Greta Lee is really good, though. - 6.5/10

there’s comfort in chaos, at least if you were to ask shiv, that’s what they’d say. there’s comfort in chaos and an older brother that exudes sunshine on a not so very nuclear family. but they wouldn’t have any other way.

shiv is the second oldest of the mclaughlins and often feels like the most lost, but they’d never say that out loud.

they had always known that they were a little bit different growing up but took that in stride, where kids were playing on the playground shiv was wondering what it took to make the playground... the playground, often coming up with their own grand ideas of how to make it better. putting their hands to work on things that could improve their life had always been something that they found joy in and wanted to carry that into adulthood.

though by the time that they’re old enough to know better, that kids like them with big dreams won’t ever make it that far because of the lack of money and belief from teachers would be enough to crush a kid but never shiv who took the defeats in strides. their family was never meant to have it the easy way.

they’ve always been a con artist at heart, making schemes to get somewhere in life, not to try and catch up with the people who already had it all, but just to get by. they used their brains to their advantage, earned money by taking the SATS in neighbouring towns for people, writing essays for older classmates that were barely making it by, stealing what they could, but always being genuine in their own work.

teachers said that if they just stopped getting in trouble that they’d make it far.

shiv danced to the beat of their own drum, embraced their weirdness, and explored their likes and dislikes. made it on the soccer team, tried band once and failed, but brushed it off. they were good in workshop, their hands always known what they needed to do before their brain did.

shiv has had the same job at bradley’s since they were fifteen and it hasn’t changed even when they went to school, it’s a steady pay even if it isn’t much, and if anyone sees them stealing they don’t say anything.

personality wise they’re a little aloof but talkative if you get them on the right day, very deeply loyal, intense trust issues, prefers random hookups, sorry to say shiv will never settle down with anyone simply because they don’t want to, they figured this out pretty early on when kids were getting crushes and people their age started dating. they simply don’t work that way and are at peace with it.

refuses to talk about their mommy and daddy issues, why bother when you have a great older brother?? ( but seriously its a sore subject they refuse to think about it or acknowledge that they exist )

shiv helped with the rebuild of the town and the library with their degree, despite feeling stuck here they do kind of have a fondness for hawkins even if it’s kind of going to the shitter.

wc ideas:

best friends -- shiv is very loyal and will pretty much do anything for their best friend and i mean literally anything

smoking buddy -- self explanatory, probably will talk the person’s ear off about their pretentious taste in music

fwb -- self explanatory, probably high fives by the end of it i hate them

old friendship -- while shiv is loyal that doesn’t mean they haven’t accidentally hurt people in the past due to their nature of trust issues and fear of abandonment, they leave before they get left
