Is Voyager 1’s mission over?
NASA’s Voyager 1 is the most-distant man-made object in space and is more than 24 billion kilometres away.  However, the first spacecraft to cross into interstellar space is not doing well and its days seem numbered as it’s been sending back incoherent messages to mission managers since November and scientists don’t know why.

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

NASA InSight Lander Arrives on Martian Surface to Learn What Lies Beneath

NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) lander successfully touched down on the Red Planet after an almost seven-month, 300-million-mile (458-million-kilometer) journey from Earth. InSight’s two-year mission will be to study the deep interior of Mars to learn how all celestial bodies with rocky surfaces, including Earth and the Moon, formed.

InSight launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California May 5. The lander touched down Monday, Nov. 26, near Mars' equator on the western side of a flat, smooth expanse of lava called Elysium Planitia, with a signal affirming a completed landing sequence at approximately noon PST (3 p.m. EST). "Today, we successfully landed on Mars for the eighth time in human history,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “InSight will study the interior of Mars, and will teach us valuable science as we prepare to send astronauts to the Moon and later to Mars. This accomplishment represents the ingenuity of America and our international partners and it serves as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of our team. The best of NASA is yet to come, and it is coming soon.” The landing signal was relayed to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, via one of NASA's two small experimental Mars Cube One (MarCO) CubeSats, which launched on the same rocket as InSight and followed the lander to Mars. They are the first CubeSats sent into deep space. After successfully carrying out a number of communications and in-flight navigation experiments, the twin MarCOs were set in position to receive transmissions during InSight's entry, descent and landing.

From Fast to Slow "We hit the Martian atmosphere at 12,300 mph (19,800 kilometers per hour), and the whole sequence to touching down on the surface took only six-and-a-half minutes," said InSight project manager Tom Hoffman at JPL. "During that short span of time, InSight had to autonomously perform dozens of operations and do them flawlessly — and by all indications that is exactly what our spacecraft did."  Confirmation of a successful touchdown is not the end of the challenges of landing on the Red Planet. InSight's surface-operations phase began a minute after touchdown. One of its first tasks is to deploy its two decagonal solar arrays, which will provide power. That process begins 16 minutes after landing and takes another 16 minutes to complete.

The InSight team expects a confirmation later Monday that the spacecraft's solar panels successfully deployed. Verification will come from NASA's Odyssey spacecraft, currently orbiting Mars. That signal is expected to reach InSight's mission control at JPL about five-and-a-half hours after landing. "We are solar powered, so getting the arrays out and operating is a big deal," said Hoffman. "With the arrays providing the energy we need to start the cool science operations, we are well on our way to thoroughly investigate what's inside of Mars for the very first time." InSight will begin to collect science data within the first week after landing, though the teams will focus mainly on preparing to set InSight's instruments on the Martian ground. At least two days after touchdown, the engineering team will begin to deploy InSight's 5.9-foot-long (1.8-meter-long) robotic arm so that it can take images of the landscape. "Landing was thrilling, but I'm looking forward to the drilling," said InSight principal investigator Bruce Banerdt of JPL. "When the first images come down, our engineering and science teams will hit the ground running, beginning to plan where to deploy our science instruments. Within two or three months, the arm will deploy the mission's main science instruments, the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) and Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP3) instruments."

InSight will operate on the surface for one Martian year, plus 40 Martian days, or sols, until Nov. 24, 2020. The mission objectives of the two small MarCOs which relayed InSight’s telemetry was completed after their Martian flyby. "That's one giant leap for our intrepid, briefcase-sized robotic explorers," said Joel Krajewski, MarCOproject manager at JPL. "I think CubeSats have a big future beyond Earth's orbit, and the MarCO team is happy to trailblaze the way." With InSight’s landing at Elysium Planitia, NASA has successfully soft-landed a vehicle on the Red Planet eight times. "Every Mars landing is daunting, but now with InSight safely on the surface we get to do a unique kind of science on Mars," said JPL director Michael Watkins. "The experimental MarCO CubeSats have also opened a new door to smaller planetary spacecraft. The success of these two unique missions is a tribute to the hundreds of talented engineers and scientists who put their genius and labor into making this a great day."

JPL manages InSight for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. InSight is part of NASA's Discovery Program, managed by the agency's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The MarCO CubeSats were built and managed by JPL. Lockheed Martin Space in Denver built the InSight spacecraft, including its cruise stage and lander, and supports spacecraft operations for the mission. A number of European partners, including France's Centre National d'Études Spatiales (CNES) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), are supporting the InSight mission. Taking advantage of the moon, Mars, and other bright objects in the sky this week, the RASC Toronto Centre astronomers will hold their free monthly public City Sky Star Party in Bayview Village Park (steps from the Bayview subway station), starting around 7 pm on the first clear weeknight this week (Mon, Tue, or Thu only). You don’t need to be an RASC member, or own any equipment, to join them – looks are free! Check here for details, and check the banner on their website home page or Facebook page for the GO or NO-GO decision around 5 pm each day. 
Every Monday evening, York University’s Allan I. Carswell Observatory runs an online star party - broadcasting views from four telescopes/cameras, answering viewer questions, and taking requests! Details are here. On Wednesday nights they offer free public viewing through their rooftop telescopes. If it’s cloudy, the astronomers give tours and presentations. Details are here. 
On Monday, February 11 at 6 pm, the Toronto Reference Library will present a free lecture by Canadian astronomer Peter Broughton talking about J.S. Plaskett, the scientist who brought Canada onto the world stage in astronomy. Details are here. 
On Tuesday, February 12, starting at 6:15 pm, U of T’s AstroTour will present their free planetarium show entitled The Life and Death of Stars. Details are here. 
At 7:30 pm on Wednesday, February 13, the RASC Toronto Centre will hold their free monthly Speaker’s Night Meeting at the Ontario Science Centre, and the public are welcome. Lunar X on Monday Evening
A few times a year, for a few hours around the First Quarter Moon, a feature called the Lunar X becomes visible in strong binoculars and small telescopes. When the rims of the craters Purbach, la Caille, and Blanchinus are illuminated from a particular angle of sunlight, they form a small, but very clear and bright X-shape. It’s located on the terminator about one third of the way up from the southern pole (bottom) of the Moon (at 2° East, 24° South). The prominent round crater Werner sits to the lower right.

On Monday evening, a Lunar X will peak in intensity at 9:35 pm EST, but the phenomenon will be visible for approximately two hours on either side of that time. This is a global event visible wherever the Moon is in a dark sky during that time window. Simply adjust for your difference from the Eastern Time zone. For the GTA, the Moon will be nicely positioned in the western evening sky. 
Cupid’s Arrow?
The star Sigma (σ) Orionis is located less than a finger’s width below the bright, white star Alnitak, which marks the eastern end of Orion’s Belt. Sigma, which can be seen with unaided eyes, is actually a beautiful little grouping of stars. Viewed in any sized telescope, the stars form a narrow V or arrow shape measuring 8 by 2 arc-minutes and pointed towards the upper right (approximately towards the star Mintaka at other end of Orion’s belt). Perhaps sigma is Cupid’s Arrow for Valentine’s Day?

The Moon and Planets
This is the best week of the lunar month to view the moon. Our celestial partner will be rising during the middle of the day and then setting at about midnight, leaving it perfectly positioned for evening enjoyment. Waxing fuller every night, the moon will pass its First Quarter phase on Monday afternoon (setting up the Lunar X phenomenon I described above). 
When we see the moon’s disk fill with light, night-after-night, we are witnessing the sun slowly rising over the moon’s eastern horizon. If an astronaut were standing somewhere along the terminator – the line that divides the moon’s lit and dark hemispheres – she would see the sun hugging the lunar horizon. Meanwhile, the sunlight striking the moon is slanted, and casts long shadows from any topographic high (mountains, ridges, and crater rims), enhancing subtle features. The result is a spectacular view in binoculars and telescopes, especially along the terminator. And new areas are illuminated every night! 
In the western evening sky on Sunday (tonight), the nearly half illuminated moon will pass a slim palm’s width to the lower left (south) of Mars and Uranus. Reddish Mars will be visible to the naked eye, but much more distant Uranus, which will be sitting 1.6 finger widths to Mars’ upper left, will require binoculars or a telescope. 
On Monday evening, the orbital path of the moon will generate an occultation of a medium-bright star named Mu Ceti in Cetus (the Whale). The event will be visible for North American skywatchers at latitudes north of 34 degrees, although the sky will not be fully dark for viewers in the west. In the Great Lakes region, the dark leading edge of the moon will cover the star at about 8:24 pm Eastern Time. The star will pop out from behind the bright edge of the moon about an hour later. (Watch near the bottom of the moon for the re-appearance.) Timings vary with latitude, so find the star near the moon well ahead of time and watch their separation shrink. This event will work for binoculars and for telescope owners.

On Wednesday evening, the waxing gibbous moon’s orbit will carry it directly through the triangular grouping of stars that make up the face of Taurus (the Bull). In late evening, the moon will pass within a finger’s width of the bright, reddish star Aldebaran, which marks the bull’s southerly eye. Check the moon’s position every hour or so, and you’ll see just how rapidly it moves compared to the distant stars.

The moon’s position near Aldebaran also starts the moon’s passage directly through the giant ring of stars that form the Winter Hexagon asterism. I wrote about that shape a few weeks ago, and posted a sky chart here. The moon will reach the opposite side of the hexagon, below the bright stars Castor and Pollux, on Saturday night. 
But wait – there’s more! High in the southeastern sky on the evening of Sunday, February 17, the nearly full moon will skim the southern edge of the large open star cluster known as The Beehive (or Messier 44) in the constellation of Cancer (the Crab). The moon and the cluster will both fit within the field of view of binoculars or a low magnification telescope, but the moon’s brilliance will mostly overwhelm the clusters’ stars. These encounters occur frequently because the cluster holds a position only 1 degree north of the ecliptic.

As far as evening planets go, Mars is the only easy one to see this week – but its location close to Uranus will make finding that distant planet relatively easy in binoculars and telescopes. After dusk, Mars will appear as a medium-bright, reddish pinpoint of light in the lower half of the southwestern sky. The Red Planet will set at about 11:30 pm local time. Mars is slowly shrinking in size and brightness as we increase our distance from it little-by-little. 
On the evenings surrounding Tuesday, February 12, Mars’ faster eastward orbital motion will carry it closely past Uranus, which will be more than 12 times farther away from Earth. Their minimum separation of 1 finger’s width will happen on Tuesday evening, when the red and blue planets will appear together in the eyepiece of a backyard telescope at low magnification. Much brighter Mars will be to the upper right (north) of Uranus, but your telescope might flip the view. (Use the nearby moon to test how your telescope alters the view.) 
On the subsequent evenings, Mars will move higher and farther away from Uranus. The distant ice giant planet will also remain positioned about 1.6 finger widths above the modestly bright star named Torcular (or Omega Piscium). This week, Uranus will set at around 11 pm local time.

Mercury will be visible in the evening sky this week after sunset. It will become easier and easier to see on each consecutive evening. For your best chance to see it, you’ll want binoculars and an open western vista. Look just above the west-southwestern horizon at around 6 pm local time today, and look closer to 6:30 pm local time by the end of this week, when it will have climbed higher in the sky. If you see a bright, unmoving dot, that will be the elusive planet. Nothing else in that part of the sky will match it in brightness.

The real planet fun is in the morning sky during the coming weeks. Bright Jupiter will rise in the southeastern sky first; at about 3:30 am local time. Even brighter Venus will join the parade just before 5 am. Dimmer, yellowish Saturn will rise before 5:30 am local time, forming a nearly straight line along the ecliptic with Venus and Jupiter. All three planets will remain visible while the morning sky brightens. Venus is swinging back towards the sun now, bringing it closer to Saturn every morning. On Sunday morning, February 17, the two planets will be only 1.5 finger widths apart – a beautiful sight. (They’ll be even closer the next morning!)

New extremely distant solar system object found during hunt for Planet X
Carnegie's Scott Sheppard and his colleagues -- Northern Arizona University's Chad Trujillo, and the University of Hawaii's David Tholen -- are once again redefining our Solar System's edge. They discovered a new extremely distant object far beyond Pluto with an orbit that supports the presence of an even-farther-out, Super-Earth or larger Planet X.

2015 TG387 was discovered about 80 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, a measurement defined as the distance between Earth and the Sun. For context, Pluto is around 34 AU, so 2015 TG387 is about two and a half times further away from the Sun than Pluto is right now.
The new object is on a very elongated orbit and never comes closer to the Sun, a point called perihelion, than about 65 AU. Only 2012 VP113 and Sedna at 80 and 76 AU respectively have more-distant perihelia than 2015 TG387. Though 2015 TG387 has the third-most-distant perihelion, its orbital semi-major axis is larger than 2012 VP113 and Sedna's, meaning it travels much farther from the Sun than they do. At its furthest point, it reaches all the way out to about 2,300 AU. 2015 TG387 is one of the few known objects that never comes close enough to the Solar System's giant planets, like Neptune and Jupiter, to have significant gravitational interactions with them.
"These so-called Inner Oort Cloud objects like 2015 TG387, 2012 VP113, and Sedna are isolated from most of the Solar System's known mass, which makes them immensely interesting," Sheppard explained. "They can be used as probes to understand what is happening at the edge of our Solar System."
The object with the most-distant orbit at perihelion, 2012 VP113, was also discovered by Sheppard and Trujillo, who announced that find in 2014. The discovery of 2012 VP113 led Sheppard and Trujillo to notice similarities of the orbits of several extremely distant Solar System objects, and they proposed the presence of an unknown planet several times larger than Earth -- sometimes called Planet X or Planet 9 -- orbiting the Sun well beyond Pluto at hundreds of AUs.
"We think there could be thousands of small bodies like 2015 TG387 out on the Solar System's fringes, but their distance makes finding them very difficult," Tholen said. "Currently we would only detect 2015 TG387 when it is near its closest approach to the Sun. For some 99 percent of its 40,000-year orbit, it would be too faint to see."
The object was discovered as part of the team's ongoing hunt for unknown dwarf planets and Planet X. It is the largest and deepest survey ever conducted for distant Solar System objects.
"These distant objects are like breadcrumbs leading us to Planet X. The more of them we can find, the better we can understand the outer Solar System and the possible planet that we think is shaping their orbits -- a discovery that would redefine our knowledge of the Solar System's evolution," Sheppard added.
It took the team a few years of observations to obtain a good orbit for 2015 TG387 because it moves so slowly and has such a long orbital period. They first observed 2015 TG387 in October of 2015 at the Japanese Subaru 8-meter telescope located atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Follow-up observations at the Magellan telescope at Carnegie's Las Campanas Observatory in Chile and the Discovery Channel Telescope in Arizona were obtained in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 to determine 2015 TG387's orbit.
2015 TG387 is likely on the small end of being a dwarf planet since it has a diameter near 300 kilometers. The location in the sky where 2015 TG387 reaches perihelion is similar to 2012 VP113, Sedna, and most other known extremely distant trans-Neptunian objects, suggesting that something is pushing them into similar types of orbits.
Trujillo and University of Oklahoma's Nathan Kaib ran computer simulations for how different hypothetical Planet X orbits would affect the orbit of 2015 TG387. The simulations included a Super-Earth-mass planet at several hundred AU on an elongated orbit as proposed by Caltech's Konstantin Batygin and Michael Brown in 2016. Most of the simulations showed that not only was 2015 TG387's orbit stable for the age of the Solar System, but it was actually shepherded by Planet X's gravity, which keeps the smaller 2015 TG387 away from the massive planet. This gravitational shepherding could explain why the most-distant objects in our Solar System have similar orbits. These orbits keep them from ever approaching the proposed planet too closely, which is similar to how Pluto never gets too close to Neptune even though their orbits cross.
"What makes this result really interesting is that Planet X seems to affect 2015 TG387 the same way as all the other extremely distant Solar System objects. These simulations do not prove that there's another massive planet in our Solar System, but they are further evidence that something big could be out there" Trujillo concludes.

WASHINGTON — A growing number of spacecraft missions, as well as NASA’s Artemis program, are putting new pressures on the agency’s Deep Space Network of antennas that communicate with them.
In a July 7 presentation to the steering committee of the planetary science decadal survey, Brad Arnold, manager of the Deep Space Network (DSN) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, says that even with upgrades to the radio antennas at sites in Australia, California and Spain, the system can’t keep up with growing demand from missions.
“We’re trying to add capacity and more antennas, but we can’t keep up with the demand that’s currently out there, so missions should expect to be getting less availability,” he said.
The DSN is used for communications with missions beyond Earth orbit. Arnold says the network relies on projections of demand from current and proposed missions, then runs “loading studies,” or simulations to see how the various antennas can accommodate them.
Missions typically ask for about 20% more data than they actually get. “At this point, nobody is complaining about that. That’s sort of the game: you ask for 20% high and you end up with what you need,” he said. However, over the next decade that 20% difference between what missions ask and what the DSN can provide will grow. “Instead of being 20% short, we’re going to be about 40% short.”
Those missions in critical phases, such as launches, orbital insertions and landings, will be prioritized so they get the communications they need. “Outside of that, you will get a little less,” he said.
Another factor will be demands on the DSN from Artemis missions to the moon. “This is the gorilla in the room,” he said. “When they need telecom and hot backups and priority 24/7, they’re going to get it. That ultimately will affect our ability to service the rest of the missions.”
The proximity of the moon would appear to allow the DSN to use smaller dishes, saving larger ones, 34 and 70 meters across, for more distant missions. “Obviously at lunar distances we don’t need a 34-meter” dish, he said. However, he added they may be cases where larger dishes may be required to provide sufficient margin for some receivers.
Arnold said the DSN is looking at several approaches to increase capacity on the network. One is to push missions to move from X-band to higher Ka-band frequencies. “X-band is becoming congested and the spectrum for data is limited. We really need to start pushing up to Ka-band,” he said, along with studies of optical communications that could provide even higher bandwidth.
X-band, he added, will be around “for the next couple decades” for current missions and those in development. “My point is, we really need to collectively as a group, as we move to the future, think about getting off X-band.”
While NASA is exploring commercialization options for communications with spacecraft in Earth orbit, Arnold says that is not an option for the DSN. “The return on investment is not clear right now for a commercial enterprise,” he said. “We’re quite a long ways off from that actually happening.”

These demonstrators were driven by technology and were executed every one to two years. They were done quickly, for low cost, and for a wide range of technologies and applications. The X-34 program was cancelled in 2001."

Mercury ahead! The ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury will make the first of six flybys of its destination planet on 1 October before entering orbit in 2025. Hot on the heels of its last Venus flyby in August, the spacecraft’s next exciting encounter is with Mercury at 23:34 UTC on 1 October (01:34 CEST 2 October). It will swoop by the planet at an altitude of about 200 km, capturing imagery and science data that will give scientists a tantalising first taste of what’s to come in the main mission. The mission comprises two science orbiters which will be delivered into complementary orbits around the planet by the Mercury Transfer Module in 2025. The ESA-led Mercury Planetary Orbiter and the JAXA-led Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter, Mio, will study all aspects of this mysterious inner planet from its core to surface processes, magnetic field and exosphere, to better understand the origin and evolution of a planet close to its parent star. BepiColombo will make use of nine planetary flybys in total: one at Earth, two at Venus, and six at Mercury, together with the spacecraft’s solar electric propulsion system, to help steer into Mercury orbit. On track for Mercury slingshot Gravitational flybys require extremely precise deep-space navigation work, ensuring that the spacecraft is on the correct approach trajectory. One week after BepiColombo’s last flyby on 10 August, a correction manoeuvre was performed to nudge the craft a little for this first flyby of Mercury, targeting an altitude of 200 km. At present, the craft is predicted to pass the innermost planet at 198 km, and small adjustments can easily be made with solar electric propulsion manoeuvres after the swing-by. As BepiColombo is more than 100 million km away from Earth, with light taking 350 seconds (about six minutes) to reach it, being on target to within just two kilometres is no easy feat. “It is because of our remarkable ground stations that we know where our spacecraft is with such precision. With this information, the Flight Dynamics team at ESOC know just how much we need to manoeuvre, to be in the right place for Mercury’s gravitational assist,” explains Elsa Montagnon, Spacecraft Operations Manager for the mission. “As is often the case, our mission’s path has been planned so meticulously that no further correction manoeuvres are expected for this upcoming flyby. BepiColombo is on track." First glimpse of Mercury During the flybys it is not possible to take high-resolution imagery with the main science camera because it is shielded by the transfer module while the spacecraft is in cruise configuration. However, two of BepiColombo’s three monitoring cameras (MCAMs) will be taking photos from about five minutes after the time of close approach and up to four hours later. Because BepiColombo is arriving on the planet’s nightside, conditions are not ideal to take images directly at the closest approach, thus the closest image will be captured from a distance of about 1000 km. The first image to be downlinked will be from about 30 minutes after closest approach, and is expected to be available for public release at around 08:00 CEST on Saturday morning. The close approach and subsequent images will be downlinked one by one during Saturday morning. The cameras provide black-and-white snapshots in 1024 x 1024 pixel resolution, and are positioned on the Mercury Transfer Module such that they also capture the spacecraft’s solar arrays and antennas. As the spacecraft changes its orientation during the flyby, Mercury will be seen passing behind the spacecraft structural elements. In general, MCAM-2 will point towards the northern hemisphere of Mercury, while MCAM-3 will point towards the southern hemisphere. During the half hour following the close approach, imaging will alternate between the two cameras. Later imaging will be performed by MCAM-3. For the closest images it should be possible to identify large impact craters on the planet’s surface. Mercury has a heavily cratered surface much like the appearance of Earth’s Moon, plotting its 4.6 billion year history. Mapping the surface of Mercury and analysing its composition will help scientists understand more about its formation and evolution. Even though BepiColombo is in ‘stacked’ cruise configuration for the flybys, it will be possible to operate some of the science instruments on both planetary orbiters, allowing a first taste of the planet’s magnetic, plasma and particle environment. “We’re really looking forward to seeing the first results from measurements taken so close to Mercury’s surface,” says Johannes Benkhoff, ESA’s BepiColombo project scientist. “When I started working as project scientist on BepiColombo in January 2008, NASA’s Messenger mission had its first flyby at Mercury. Now it’s our turn. It’s a fantastic feeling!” Celebrating BepiColombo’s namesake The upcoming first Mercury flyby falls on the 101st anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe 'Bepi' Colombo (2 October 1920–20 February 1984), an Italian scientist and engineer for whom the BepiColombo mission is named. Colombo is known for explaining Mercury's peculiar characteristic of rotating about its own axis three times in every two orbits of the Sun. He also realised that by careful choice of a spacecraft’s flyby point as it passed a planet, the planet’s gravity could help the spacecraft make further flybys. His interplanetary calculations enabled NASA’s Mariner 10 spacecraft to achieve three flybys of Mercury instead of one by using a flyby of Venus to change the spacecraft’s flight path – the first of many spacecraft to use such a gravity assist manoeuvre. Following Mariner 10’s mission in 1974-75, NASA’s Messenger spacecraft flew by Mercury three times in 2008-09 and orbited the planet for four years (2011-2015). The BepiColombo mission will build on the successes of its predecessors to provide the best understanding of the Solar System’s innermost planet to date.

- FrDP has weird pairing names. I’ve seen a few lists floating about but they’ve either been incomplete or not up to date. One night, we were talking on the slack and one of said lists were brought up... and I may or may not have got annoyed at the organization of said list, made my own list, and then updated it.
