more yelling about SW species, specifically the ones in the first few eps of CW S4 eyyy

ofc the Mon Calamari are a classic favorite of mine, both out of nostalgia and attachment to Admiral Ackbar, but also out of admiration for their uniqueness! it’s great to see more of them in CW, especially Prince Lee-Char, who is already a new favorite in his own right!

they’re so well-designed - they’re believably well-adapted to their environments as well as aesthetically appealing (look at that cute lil face!!!). i love the little tentacle-beards they have (and i appreciate that they grow with age, regardless of gender), and their super-interesting hands and feet:

look at that!!!!! look at the vestigial(?) suction cups! the webbing! the fused carpals! THE VESTIGIAL(?) SIXTH DIGIT! they do look a little confusing - do they have cartilaginous ‘bones’? did they evolve from tentacles and are now reverting back into tentacles, or are they still in the process of developing into hands? - but either way they’re so gnarled and fascinating i love them.

i have super mixed feelings, though, about the Karkaradon.

on one hand, how uninspired. that skull is totally nonsensical and downright breaks physics in animation. but on the other hand.........its a motherfuckin shark alien holy shit how sick is that

im also really torn on the Quarren, because from the neck-up they’re extremely unique and really cool:

SQUID MAAAAN. SQUID MAAAAANN. but then. (outside of CW, so i’m not faulting these guys specifically for this). oh my god. the dumb motherfucking designers. went and made them sexually dimorphic, which wouldn’t be stupid if it was something logical like the females are bigger or more colorful or something. but no. they gave them squid tiddies. squid. tiddies. THAT MAKES NO GODDAMN SENSE. if there’s ONE single design trope that i hate more than anything else, its mammaries on a non-mammalian race. this is absolutely kindergarten-level basic-ass biology, people. don’t put fuckin tiddies on your squids. fuck you.

on a much more positive note, shout-out to the guys who came up with the Hydroid Medusa:

technically not a race, but i had to say that i literally cannot think of a more fitting, underused, and terrifying underwater monster than a gigantic cyborg jellyfish, complete with deadly electrical stingers. if you haven’t seen the episode, i must emphasize these things are like...well over three stories tall, with the bell having the radius of probably two school buses, and there is an entire forest of them. hundreds of them. they’re beautiful and incredibly scary and i love them.

also i know i went off about my love for the Nautolans (especially Kit) in my last post but can i just say, from the bottom of my heart,

also to duck back to S3 (most of which was really boring to me) im totally obsessed with Anoobas. my girl Terryl Whitlatch went OFF on the original design (she’s my idol and i particularly admire her ability to make things ugly-cute without shying away from traditional aesthetic appeal):

but also.....i fucking love hyenas, especially Ardwolves, so aliens based on Ardwolves, while less creative than the original design, is still A+ in my book alsdkjfalsdf
