Tuesday, April 23, 2024: 6:30pm ET: Feature LP: Oak Ridge Boys - Fancy Free (1981)
Fancy Free is the fifth country studio album by the Oak Ridge Boys, released on March 26, 1981. It featured their biggest hit “Elvira”. “Somewhere in the Night” was covered by Sawyer Brown in 1987 from their album of the same name. The title of the album was suggested by longtime Oak Ridge Boys personal assistant Charles Daunis, and he is thanked for this contribution in the liner notes. The…

collaboration spotlight — Elvira by Home Free & The Oak Ridge Boys
youtube
It's common advice to never meet your heroes. But if you do, and your heroes turn out to be great guys, and then they ask to work with you, it would be silly to turn them down. So, when the Oak Ridge Boys' lead singer Duane Allen suggested a collaboration with Home Free, they jumped at the chance. They had already been planning to cover "Elvira" on their upcoming album due to fan requests, but the Boys were also excited to put a fresh a cappella twist on their biggest hit.
Luckily, Home Free didn't have to start from scratch on their arrangement. They were friends with VoicePlay, another five-man a cappella group who had been performing a version of this song for several years and were happy to lend a hand.
Details:
title: Elvira
original performers: The Oak Ridge Boys
written by: Dallas Frazier
arranged by: Tim Foust, Geoff Castellucci, & VoicePlay
release date: 21 August 2015
My favorite bits:
such robust opening harmonies
Rob's sassy little hummed downward run
Adam's percussion dropping into a half-time groove at the start of the second verse
the pure enjoyment on Joe's face as Austin tears into that riff
♫ "Oom papa mow-mow" ♫ Oh yeah, young-un? ♫ "Oom papa ⇓ mow-mow ⇓" ♫
Austin getting everyone to take a commemorative selfie (see below for the result)
everything dropping out to make space for Tim's final growled ♫ "mow-mow" ♫
all of The Oak Ridge Boys autographing Austin's shirt
beard management tips with Rob and William
those crunchy rising chords on ♫ "fi-i-i-rrrrre" ♫ 🔥

Trivia:
Home Free enjoyed VoicePlay's more goofy and theatrical version of this song so much that, when The Oak Ridge Boys approached them about recording together, they reached out to Geoff to ask if he'd help create a new 9-man arrangement.
Footage from the audio recording session is part of Home Free's behind-the-scenes video for their 2015 album "Country Evolution".
The Oak Ridge Boys joined Home Free a year and a half later for a live performance of this song at the Grand Ole Opry, which gave Chance an opportunity to sing with them, as well.
