You were born with a silver spoon in your mouth and a pretty little Bonnet on your head,
And you grew up climbing a rope that burns your Hands and hardens your heart,
But then you learn to love and be loved, and you Teach those you love what you know.

[OFMD Poetry] 10/13/23
I met fate while you were gone
And I fought her
With my sword
And with my gun
And when she surrendered
Lying on the ground
I took my rusted blade
And my flintlock
And carved a hole
For you to fit perfectly in
And I waited for you by the docks
So when you never came
I got rid of everything
And it was only the scar tissue
That screamed your name

List of Works/Links
Hi all! Here is any information you might want to know such as links to other social media and a list of works. All works are also available on ao3. If any links don't work, please check out my ao3 instead. Fics there are organized into the same series they are here.
Links:
My Linktree
Note: Chapter fics have a special tag that goes with each one so you can find them that way if you don't want to click through here.
This fanfiction is tagged with the assumption that you have watched the show Our Flag Means Death and are okay with the canon content. All fics are tagged for triggers beyond what is shown in the original show. For example, I will not be tagging fics for swearing and alcohol use because the original show has plenty of it.

Nameless Fear
I’ll be unforgivable in your wake -
The monster at the end of the book.
The nameless thing that everyone fears.
Speak the devil and I appear.
I’ll be cruel and merciless -
Dousing all my meals in blood still warm,
straight from the artery,
straight from the heart.
I’ll live in smoke and shadow
and easily disappear into
night and fog and rolling mist
leaving no sound or footprint behind.
You’ll only know I was here
by the limp bodies curled on the floor,
by the weeping and wailing
and the gnashing of teeth.
I will live on the edges of reality -
Enough true stories to strike fear,
enough unconfirmed details to cast doubt.
My legend will be whispered in the public houses,
over campfires and anytime a ship loses sight of land.
Sailors will guard up their hearts and their vessels
to keep me at bay.
I’ll lay in the spaces between days -
the hazy twilights, the slow dawns,
the fog dunked sea and the lingering crisp of autumn air.
You’ll never trace my steps, never find me back at home.
You are the reason for all this suffering -
the beast gave you its heart
and you gave it back.
When they see the mast and that black scrap -
They’ll know the end is here.
No turning back.
I’ll be the creature of myth
drowning ships down in the deep.
All hands on deck. No survivors to speak.
I’ll take my pound of flesh from everyone’s back-
and they’ll know your name like they know my name.
They’ll know better than to speak it out loud.
You’ll be like Lilith, like Eve, like Pandora -
unleashed all this misery
with no way to put it back.

it’s absolutely essential that ed didn’t want to drown when he was in purgatory. he didn’t jump — he was pushed. it’s so essential that he wanted to live before hearing stede’s voice. essential that he stood his ground and said “no. you don’t get to say that to me.” and when stede tells him that he doesn’t have to say it back, it’s so important that ed says “i’m not about to.”
he’s been so hurt and has felt things so deeply and he’s not going to just let that slide the instant stede comes back into his life. they’re two whim-prone people who are learning to be patient and take their time and do things right because they see the value of what they have. they don’t want to lose it again.

ofmd12verse Day 4 (pastoral): we’re gonna have fun today, and that’s an order
A pastoral poem is one that glamorizes and idealizes country life. It speaks of a yearning to get back to that simple life, and that it is somehow more godly and superior than any other. It is often couched in religious allegory.
With this poem I decided to hit the major beats of a pastoral poem but reflect the reality of "country" life for someone like Stede, who owned slaves. His father owned slaves and he owned slaves, and I thought it would be interesting to watch the reality of that start to creep into his mind the more time he spends with his crew and realize that his history being "on top" of everyone necessarily meant that there were people at "the bottom," the kind of people he is growing to like and admire a lot. Does Stede making himself captain of a ship put him in a similar position of power? Is he continuing the same practices from his previous life as a plantation owner? That's ultimately for him to decide and express through how he sees and treats others going forward.
When Stede turns to Lucius and says,
"We're gonna have fun today, and that's an order!"
He expects it done, because he is after all, the Captain
And that night, when Lucius, ever insubordinate,
Makes light of his order,
his order
his order to have fun
Stede lays awake and remembers
He remembers all the orders
All the orders he ever gave
All the orders he ever heard
And those who obeyed them
And those who did not
"You are a Shepherd," his Father told him
Holy Father, Holy Shepherd, one and the same,
and a Shepherd tends to his flock
He keeps them safe
He keeps them fed
And in return, they feed him
They keep him secure
It's a healthy balance, totally normal
that people like them, not people, sheep
should support people like us, the Shepherds,
for whoever heard of sheep herding Men?
And though the Holy Father thought Stede more sheep-like,
Not quite the Man he should have been,
He believed that an education in the ways of us and the ways of them
Was all it would take to mend his lost sheep of a son
That and some beatings, some harsh words, a gilded paddock,
And one might say that a gilded cage is still a cage,
But in truth, a gilded cage is much nicer than what the rest of them got
And this was the natural order, the way it should have been,
So Stede did not question the orders of his Holy Father,
And if sheep took a lashing, or were sheared, or were sold,
It was the way things had to be
There was a time when Stede became the Holy Father,
Owner of sheep, owner of men who were not men,
They had arms and legs and eyes and ears,
But their pain was not the same as his, he knew,
Because they were just sheep, and he was the Shepherd,
And he did his job as he had been taught
He gave his orders, and his orders were obeyed,
and if they were not obeyed, he did what he had to do
Until the day of the big reveal,
This Sheep in Shephard's clothing,
Escaped from the paddock and ran away
Now he is no Shepherd, this crew is not his flock,
he is their Captain, their leader, and Captains govern through merit
Don't they?
Then why did Stede purchase this life?
Why did Stede purchase this ship?
Why did Stede purchase this crew?
He hadn't earned it.
It was no different.
And maybe his orders now are to have fun,
talk it through, listen to story time,
but they are still orders
they're still orders
they're orders
orders
And Stede thinks then, not for the last time
That to truly be born anew
To truly unshackle himself from his past
He must earn it, or give it up
He must cast off his wealth,
And become an equal
But he isn't ready
He's a coward
It's all he has
It's all he knows
He's scared
He's hiding
He's ashamed
He's pathetic
He's considering
But he's not there yet
But one day it won't be an order
They'll have fun with him because they want to
Because he's earned it
Because they are all free
