"Hey," you stopped in front of the school and tapped one of the teachers on the shoulder. "I'm here to pick up Niamh Cassidy?"
"What's your name, miss?" when he turned around you nearly lost your balance completely. That man was so gorgeous, his smile could light up the entire world, his eyes were the color of mint leaves.
"I-I'm y/n, I'm her aunt."
"Just wait one moment, I'll be right back."
The beautiful man turned away to check with another teacher, they both nodded after exchanging a few words in Irish, words you couldn't understand after spending most of your life away from your homeland.
"Seems like she's finishing up a test, she'll be out in ten minutes, miss," the young man politely said. "Do you wanna come in? I'm pretty sure there's coffee in the teachers' lounge. If we're lucky we'll find biscuits as well."
"Um, sure," you followed him into the school, you were not about to miss the opportunity to talk to this man. "Also, you can call me y/n, it's just fine."
"Sorry, it's a habit," he chuckled. Despite being so nice and smiley, he had a weird air of... Obedience or conformity. Almost like he didn't allow himself to make any mistakes, like a horse that's been broken so severely it won't dare do anything it wants. "Y/n, after you."
The gentleman gestured to the door and looked down as you passed, but you caught yourself almost wishing he would look at you instead. Wishing his piercing green gaze would be glued to you like yours was to him.
"How do you like your coffee? Milk and sugar or just sugar?" he asked, carefully preparing the cups.
"Milk and sugar please, I like it sweet."
"Me too, guess I never grew out of it."
"There's nothing to outgrow, adults can like sweets too, right?"
"Yeah, right, sorry."
"You don't have to apologize," you felt bad for taunting him when he was so nice. "You can disagree with me, it's not a crime yet."
"So- Okay," he stopped himself before apologizing again and smiled as he placed a tiny tray with the coffee and biscuits on the table.
"Thank you."
"So, where is that accent from?" he sat across from you with his own cup in hand. "You're not from here for sure."
"Actually I am, but I grew up in Chicago. My parents divorced when I was a baby, I ended up going to the States with my mom while my dad stayed here. She remarried and decided to stay there, I used to come every summer, but now I think I might wanna move."
"Oh, I see! That sounds amazing, I feel like it might be a little boring for you here after living in America, and such a big city."
"It might be, but boring is exactly what I need right now."
"You've come to the right place, I'm very boring."
You laughed as he slowly realized what he just said and shut his eyes in embarrassment. Damn, he was so cute and that smile. That smile was so unique and still, you felt like you've seen it before, like Aurora in Sleeping Beauty meeting the prince for the first time.
"Once upon a dream," you murmured without realizing.
"Excuse me?" he tilted his head.
"I was just thinking you look so familiar... I feel like I know you."
He chuckled nervously once again, looking down at his coffee and you immediately regretted saying anything. Now it was your turn to apologize profusely for bothering him like that:
"I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to be rude, I say things without thinking sometimes," you tried to fix it, but he nodded as if somewhat used to that sort of thing.
"Maybe you've seen me in the paper once?" he smirked, there was a shadow of pain in his voice, but he wasn't mad at you or resentful in any way. "When I was a little lad?"
"OH MY GOSH!" you covered your mouth, the memory of the first time you saw that smile hitting you like lightning. "I didn't see you in the paper, I saw you in person. When I was younger, spending the summer here, I saw a group of kids shouting at these boys, you were there. I know because I- Nothing."
"Because you...?"
You definitely didn't wanna say you had a crush on him back then and spent the rest of summer wandering around the city and looking for him, but you were never able to find that boy again. It became a distant memory, but how could you ever forget your first real-life crush?
"I- I just- That year was really important to me. Why were those kids being so mean to you?"
"Because they could and we couldn't fight back. If the priests found out we did anything like that we'd be standing outside in our underwear all night."
"Priests? Like the ones in those industrial schools?"
"Exactly, I used to live in one, St. Judas."
"Oh," you understood then why he seemed a little hesitant at first. He probably was in the paper after the huge scandal involving the death of a young boy at the hands of a sadistic priest and all the sexual abuse allegations against school staff. "So that was you."
"That's me, O'Reilly 58... Well, now I go by Mr. O'Reilly or just Darragh."
"Wow, I'd imagine you'd never wanna set foot in a school ever again."
"You'd think, but I actually had an amazing teacher growing up and he somehow inspired me into becoming a teacher too."
"That's so sweet. You can give back to the kids the kindness you received... I'm so sorry, you probably hate remembering this, I shouldn't have brought it up, I feel like such a dick."
"No, I don't mind, really. I think we do need to talk about it, you know? Even if it's painful. The whole reason why those things used to happen to us was that no one talked about it, it only changed for me and my mates when someone decided to speak up. I take any chance I can get to talk about my experience, so people know it's real and don't let it happen again."
"Makes a lot of sense. You are so smart, no wonder you became a teacher," if it was even possible, he seemed even more attractive to you now. You saw all that braveness, all that perseverance, and resilience.
"Well thank you, I'm surprised you remember all that after 20 years, especially living in America. Was my uniform that hideous to be burned into your memory like that?" he joked.
"No! I mean, it wasn't great, you boys certainly deserved better, but I just... I thought you were handsome," you finally admitted.
Darragh stared at you for a few seconds agape, his eyes grew with surprise. Was it really so hard to believe? Did those monsters really destroy his self-esteem and self-worth that much?
"You did? Back then?"
"Yeah," you looked away, face flushed like a tomato. "I was so young and I went to an all-girls school, I didn't see boys often, you were so cute-"
"So I'm not anymore?" he teased, finally letting his true playfulness show.
"Auntie! I was looking for you everywhere!" Niamh stood by the door with her backpack. "Let's go home, I'm hungry."
You sighed, it was good that she showed up and stopped you from making a fool of yourself even more, but part of you wanted to keep having that conversation. You enjoyed talking to Darragh, he was sweet and funny, still just as handsome.
"Yeah, sure," you cleared your throat, grabbing your purse and getting up.
"Bye, Mr. O'Reilly," the girl waved. "See you tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow," he grinned.
"The answer is yes, by the way, you still are," you turned around to say before running off, excited to see what he had to say about that the next day.
