In the grand scheme of things- Dynasty House is an avenue for experimentation. There are very few hooks to speak of on this EP. But the band plays with irregular arrangements and dynamics that fall somewhere between jazzy psychedelia and art-punk.

Toronto indie-noise quartet, Hooded Fang, have delved deeper into the realm of sinister and outlandish songwriting. Their experimentation of various noise landscapes have put them in a dichotomy compared to early release such as 2010’s Album and 2011’s Tosta Mista. The new Hooded Fang that we’re getting to know slowly evolved from the garagey bubble-gum pop of their inception to the fuzz-laden noise-rock of 2016’s Venus on Edge.
The band has now followed up with a six song EP, titled Dynasty House. The clashing whirlwind of Lane Halley’s off-kilter guitar riffs with Nicholas Hune-Brown’s twilight keyboard tones casts an abstract polarity of grim melodies. The unabiding ear, may get lost in the multidirectional distribution of noise. But something about Hooded Fang’s unusual soundscape is as surreal as it is brilliant.
“Queen Of Agusan” opens Dynasty House with doomy guitar riffs correlating, menacing keys and Daniel Lee’s vocal drawl. Hooded Fang sticks with the same formula of sound on the remaining five tracks. “Sister and Suns” and “Paramaribo Prince” are more punked up and rhythm-driven than the latter. The closing track, “Mama Pearl,” encompasses a consistent mathy rhythm ornate with synth-based overtones and pulsing bass-lines.

Lerner began conducting a series of unusual experiments to find out. On the campus of the University of Kansas, he had subjects observe a woman undergo a series of tests. When the woman (ostensibly a fellow test subject but actually a grad student playing a role) got a question wrong, she was given a jolt of electricity. As the subjects looked on, the jolts became more severe. She writhed in pain. It gradually became clear: they were witnessing a woman being brutally tortured.
The subjects were understandably distressed. When given the option of changing the experiment, the vast majority chose to end the electric shocks. When they weren’t given that option, however, Lerner witnessed a disturbing reaction. As the participants continued to watch, unable to alter the victim’s fate, they began to derogate the woman. Different groups were told she was being paid different amounts of money for the experiment. The lower the pay, the more the subjects disliked her. Irrationally, with no evidence to support it, the observers became convinced the woman deserved her punishment.

Why It’s so Hard to Actually Work in Shared Offices
WeWork offers freelancers a chic workspace and beer on tap—but are people productive?
During my final week at WeWork, the building held a party. All six floors were crowded with tenants and guests eagerly drinking WeWork margaritas and awkwardly swaying to Drake. A young, blond exec cut the music for a moment to stand up on a riser and say how much she loved fulfilling the company’s mission. “This is more like a bar or a club than a workspace,” said the local member of provincial parliament, taking in the scene. Entrepreneurial caterers handed out business cards along with their miniature cups of artisanal pho. This party was work, of course, just like work was always a party. I ate a plate of duck-ragù pasta served on a pillow of cauliflower foam, drank a craft beer called Food Truck, and felt an inexplicable and totally disproportionate sense of despair.

Foreign students are lied to and exploited on every front. They’re also propping up higher education as we know it
In recent years, there is some evidence that schools have started to recognize the gravity of the problem on campuses: some have rolled out peer support groups, others have brought in counselling in students’ first languages. But the fundamental way the system is set up ignores the reality of the pressures these students face. Community colleges and even large universities aren’t equipped to manage an immigration settlement program for teenagers. They’d rather think of themselves as institutions of higher learning, not convenient waystations for young people in search of better lives. "It’s wilful denial," says Earl Blaney. "Purposeful denial. They don’t want to be responsible."
