It is the nature of the news cycle that huge things get passed over.

But what happened just over a month ago in Israel should not be passed over.

The scale and catastrophe of what happened is still becoming clear.

Yet the world seems to have moved on.

Already the international media are focused not on the atrocities Hamas committed against Israel but on the response of Israel to the terrorists of Hamas.

Every day the New York Times and other papers give their views on how Israel should bring the war to a draw.

And every day there are protests across the world made up of people who are either evil or ignorant.

That some of the anti-Israel protesters are ignorant is provable.

Two girls interviewed at one pro-Hamas protest in London were asked what their reaction was when they first learned that Hamas had attacked Israel on October 7.

“I don’t believe they did, did they,” said one.

“Honestly, I think I need to be a bit more clued up on everything that’s going on, so I feel I’m not really qualified to answer that too well,” said the other.

Well, she appeared to feel “qualified” enough to turn up at an anti-Israel demo.

Her friend, holding a banner, actually said, “I mean, I’m not sure I’ve seen anything that shows that that’s actually happened.”

These two ignoramuses should have come to Israel with me this week.

“At the beginning of every story there is nothing- at least, nothing noticeable. To have this nothing… It is something of a necessity. For with it, it gives everything meaning. You appreciate that you have so much more when you had nothing to begin with.

Much the same to our own universe, at the beginning, there was nothing of particular note. A vast sea of this nothingness —potential— with no one to observe it. Such things may not be inherently nothing themselves, existence gives meaning. But observation makes meaning. An existence of something means nothing if there is no one to appreciate it. And so was the fate of our universe, to lay dormant. That is, aside from three sisters. Their minds grew restless with the potentiality of their lives. To sit, and to wait until something changed at last. And within their vast expanse of nothingness, they combined together the best of their attributes to make something. To make a change.

Din, the eldest of the three, with her fiery persistence and rage moulded earth. She made rock and mountains, a raging volcano left as the mark of her magic. With all her power, she created land. The middle sister, Nayru, known for her wit and intellect, doused the stiff earth with water. She softened the grounds and made rivers, oceans, clay and soil. And with the water she brought upon the world, she placed her magic within the highest, coldest peak. With her knowledge, she nourished the earth so that it may persist. And the youngest sister, Farore, known for her strong will and bravery, used her magic to inhabit the land. She made trees for Din’s earth and fish for Nayru’s rivers. She populated every plane and mountain with a small piece of her magic. With all her courage, she made gifts to the world, rather than a gift to herself.

For a while this world was content, and the goddesses watched adoringly as the earth would shift, eras coming and going, tides pushing and pulling. But with their gift of creation, they brought destruction. With somethingness, there was nothingness. With light, there was dark. With life, there was death. This absence pulled at them, punishing them in some odd way for their creations. The void gave birth to the sisters, its power split between the three and equal to that of itself. But in making their world, they’d tipped the even scales of fare past what the gods could control.

Watching their beloved creation fall apart, the goddesses agreed to use their power to keep their creation whole. They scattered what was left of themselves, leaving parts of their divinity marked upon the world. And though their power was thinned and death clawed at their fading forms, they left two final gifts to us. They left the triforce, their very presence focused down into nothing more than a relic, capable of granting any wish. It’s said to hold a shard of each goddess’s heart and is bound together by their love in one another and for the world they managed to make. But such power could not coexist with the destruction seeping across the world. They created a protector, Hylia. A goddess so kind that she embodies the best attributes of each goddess. She holds Din’s burning determination, Nayru’s sense of keen judgement and Farore’s daring kindness. Through the seams of reality, that evilness that festered in the cracks of the world had not settled, and too, gave two faults. Ganondorf, a being of Demise, hungering for the power of the triforce that he’d stop at no mortal law to possess. For every kind gift the goddesses gave, Demise sought to destroy. And the grace of Hylia bore Nir. A goddess of fickle wishes and born without a heart. Where our goddess brings us light and life, Nir brings darkness and death. But so with the world, light prevails. Ganon struck down by a hero wielding a blade of divine light and Nir chained down by Hylia’s spirit. Now, Hyrule as we know it lives in content balance. And while the night still falls, we can revel knowing that the sun will soon rise.”

Link smiled down at the group of kids all crowded around his feet. Their scrawny, underfed frames contrasted by beaming wide grins with missing teeth. The sight was uncomfortable. The children of Castle town were far different. Their clothes had no holes and he couldn’t see their bones through their skin. He’d never have stopped here if it weren’t for the spirit sightings. Sure, the kids were cute, but he’d have to watch his rupee bag.

“Oh! Is that how you got your sword?!”

“What about Zelda?!”

“I wanna know more!”

Soon, each little child chirped up, hungering for another story atop the many he had already told. The children at his feet bickered with one another as he tried to pick a story out that would satisfy them. The stories of his predecessors? Perhaps. But the Heroes of Legend were well known throughout even the smallest secluded hamlet. It made no difference this one was wartorne. He hardly even made it past that thought before the door to the small hut was slammed open, the rotting wood splintering.

“Th-There’s-“ The old man at the door sputtered and held his abdomen as one of the children ran at him.

“Opa? Opa!” The old man slumped over, sinking to his knees and rasping out bloody breaths. Link moved before he could’ve thought to stop himself. Such a skill had afforded him his life when he killed ganon. Sometimes, bravery leaves no room for forethought. Such is the way of courage.

“Sir, what happened” The man hacked and hacked, his hands trembling as they clutched his ribs. Removing the cold bony joints was probably not wise to the room full of children, the skin greying and peeling from his wound in a fashion Link had come to know well.

The dusty streets weren’t bustling with idle chatter and the poor folk running their errands as he’d grown accustomed to during his stay. There was a stark silence like that of nightfall, when the world is supposed to be still. His blade was familiar in his hand, ready to cut down what opposed him. There was an ear-splitting screech and his gut sank. Skin stealers. He felt the chipped teeth gnawing at his skin, sawing past his clothes. It skittered to the ground with a fleshy smack, its hollow eye sockets flexing around nothing. It chittered its teeth, waiting for a sound to hunt down. It’s bones popped and cracked as it circled, a warbled coo coming out of its undulating throat. Link didn’t let the waste of a soul live. The grey patchwork of its skin wouldn’t likely let it anyway. Its death would bring it back to Nir. Where she’d find some way to send her wicked beasts upon him again— he’s sure. Looking at the bony corpse, Link felt curiosity above the disgust. Such vile things waited until night until they could not be watched by Hylia. They preferred the silvery glow of Nir and her cover of darkness. But this one was out among broad daylight. The cloudy sky cleared and the voice of his goddess was warm in his mind, drowning out the panic of his thoughts.

The Nords muster under smoke, as if they taint the air above them, as if they're windows of obscurity. Their vast camp sits in the cradle of a mountain-valley and it collects their exhaust like a bowl, a steel-coloured soup. Ysmir wraps a scarf around his face as he approaches.

He's familiar enough with the wooden halls, the tall stone circles marking out places of gather and sacrifice, the stench of blood and refuse and cooking grease from such a gathering. Familiar, but disdainful-- there is no wind in this little valley and already he craves the smell of pine.

The Chieftain sees him approach. The Chieftain greets him with a thu'um, which all Nords are using these days.

Ysmir responds with silence and bows his head to hear out the offer.

Raid. Magic. Ysgramor. Falmer. Words like little gnats buzzing in Ysmir's ears.

He's bored, then. He turns and speaks to the sky: HEYVNOKLIR.

The smoggy air is cleaved in half by two grasping wings. A heavy body falls to the earth behind Ysmir, staggering uneasily, unaccustomed to the ground. A hot gust of breath strikes Ysmir from behind, but he's already turning when a hard horny snout bumps hard against his hip.

The Nords are shouting-- scrambling for weapons and scrambling back-- pointing, gibbering, retreating to their brownish wooden huts.

Ysmir ignores them. Heyvnoklir's head is turned, watching the Nords, but he lowers a shoulder when Ysmir takes one of his great neck-spines in hand. Ysmir swings himself upwards, throws a leg over the drake's spine. He finds saddle just above the joints of the great wings just as a Nord draws closer with a halberd.

He breathes out a word and Heyvnoklir rises clumsily into the sky.

Above the valley the air is clean and crisp. Ysmir leans close to the drake's neck, keeping his face down so that the air might slip over him more easily, his hands tight around dorsal spines. From the corner of his eye he sees the brown of the Nord village swallowed up by an ocean of unblemished green and snow-white. Beyond, over a jagged line of mountains, the smooth and endless blue of the Northern ocean, Atmora invisible beyond.

"I knew you wouldn't stay long," Heyvnoklir rumbles deep in his chest. "Paarthurnax vomindok. What need have you for the bronne, the Nords?"

"Bronne vomindok," Ysmir agrees against a rippling sheet of hot scales. "Nu mu nir."

It is the fiftieth year of the First Era and not much has yet changed.

PAIN AND AGONY. AND WHAT AM I? MAN, OR MACHINE? initial trials of genji’s cybernetic modifications were created purely for defensive and offensive purposes, removing what was deemed as vestigial functions (i.e. eating, sleeping, tears, reproduction). as his dossier explains, genji’s cybernetic body transformed him into a living weapon.

much of genji’s cybernetics are derivative of the combined genetic and neuro-nanite research of a geneticist and neurologist working for DARPA, conducted within the Soldier Performance Enhancement Program. his organic body is essentially fused with his cybernetics/prosthetics. they are one, a cohesive unit of organic and cybernetic functions working symbiotically to sustain him. essentially, the cybernetics are ingrained into his nervous system. Interfering with one may compromise the other.

genji’s cybernetic augmentation and modification were ongoing, during his time in Blackwatch. it would eventually be completed sometime before he leaves Overwatch.

despite this incredible feat of combined bioengineering and cybernetic technology, it is the reason genji has struggled with his identity as a human being, and a person. it also incites confusion and prejudice among others, such as zarya, who seems to understand the full extent of his cybernetics and quickly decided genji is not organic. this misconception may be due in part to the fact that he is the only human being who is almost entirely comprised of cybernetics, synthetic biology and neurotechnology. down to the nerves. down to the brain. in reality, genji is neither omnic, or human, but a complex hybrid of both.

* RESUSCITATION / REVIVAL. angela ziegler was involved with this process, and this process only. evident from his appearance in Blackwatch, genji’s body was mutilated: his left arm, left pectoral, neck and face, which seem to be the only visible organic parts of him, are covered in large scars. He is missing his right arm, forelegs/knees, and possibly a considerable portion of his organs and spine. typically, these injuries would have almost certainty result in excessive blood loss, which would have guaranteed his death. however, genji was saved by a combination of cell-regenerative exposure to a wavelength of light called near-infrared (NIR, which turbocharges the chemical reactions that provide a cell’s energy, thus regenerating cellular structure, which explains Angela’s “healing light” technology), and a special cold saline solution (approximately 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit) laced with oxygen and glucose. his body was frozen, and dead, for three hours before he was successfully revived.

* COMPOSITE GRAPHENE-MICROLATTICE AND MAGNESIUM ALLOY. genji’s cybernetics are made almost entirely of a metal matrix composite of the lightest strongest metals in the world. This, combined with his enhanced strength, allows him to be incredibly swift, agile, and steady. built for agility.

* PROSTHETICS / SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY. genji’s prosthetics and repair was... extensive. 70% of his body is inorganic. designed. his cybernetics are derivative of what is known as soft robotics, using electrically actuated synthetic muscle.  

MUSCULATURE:  Muscle fibers and sinews were refitted with high-strength polymer fibers: carbon nanotube and synthetic spider silk, workable by heat distributed throughout the coils through a jet engine scaled down and stored within his artificial heart. The polymer fibers possess a strain density that is 15 times larger than natural muscle, and can lift 1000 times its own weight.

BIOLOGY / DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: his body requires only a minimal amount of blood/fluid, most of which is why his organic skin does not look death-pale. The cybernetics are entirely self-sustaining, with an advanced biomass furnace and microbial fuel cells replacing his stomach, capable of turning vegetation (and potentially meat) into energy, capitalizing on the chemical energy of whatever is consumed. genji’s sense of taste is diluted, but, over the years (after the disbandment of Overwatch, in particular), he has come to appreciate texture. his salvageable organs were sterilized of dead cells through a powerful medical detergent and then regenerated from nanite-infused stem cells.

genji’s self-sustaining solar-power technology allows him to only require “eating” as a secondary source of energy. It is not a necessity, unless he is unable to use solar energy as a source.

TACTILE SENSORS / SYNTHETIC DERMIS: a solar-powered graphene skin enables selective feeling, equipped with tactile and sensory input systems which utilized sensation in a purely clinical and practical manner. It absorbed tactile and proximal information, and transferred it to the softer haptic exoskin layered over synthetic muscle fibers. His body can sense physical proximity and potential dangers, the weight and shape of touch, but not the feeling, not the texture (as his body was weaponized, it was not built to feel pain, or any other distractions)-------   these sensations were added on later, to his new, enhanced suit/armor. because genji’s prosthetics require heat, it also releases processed steam and hot air through the cylinders in his shoulders as a means of cooling itself, especially when he exerts a lot of physical energy in combat.

PROSTHETIC LIMBS: forelegs, of course, are a combination of electricity- and pneumatic-actuated motor systems, synthetic muscle; this is also true for his prosthetic arm (these prosthetic limbs would be refined and enhanced later over the course of his service for the United Nations Special Operations Group). to prevent his body from rejecting the cybernetic augmentation, genji underwent gene therapy and stem cell therapy.

EYES + VISION: genji’s eyes were enhanced; he no longer has pupils. this is because his eyes were refitted with cybernetic implants that filter light with a 200% efficiency rate, especially able to control and filter blue light (the highest energy visible light), enhancing his vision and controlling light filtration. the aqueous layer was removed. genji’s eyes are now protected with two protective micro-thin lenses and a self-cleaning synthetic nictitating membrane, thus no longer requiring tears. does not require blinking.

REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS: internal reproductive organs were sterilized via vasectomy, considered a liability and simply impractical.

SLEEP: genji’s cybernetics are solar-powered, coupled with gene-editing software which engineered a DEC2 mutation within his genome; thus, Genji does not require sleep.

SPINE / NECK:  genji had been attacked from behind him, leaving his spine vulnerable, which ultimately necessitated replacing a significant portion of his nervous system and spinal cord. the procedure was dangerous, but necessary for his cybernetics. luckily, his brain was left in tact. during the surgery, he was kept alive through a perfusion procedure and blood substitution of oxygenated artificial cerebrospinal fluid; through stem cell therapy and bioengineering, his spine was partially replaced with a denser, more flexible variation. genji’s vocal cords were also modified, replaced with a touch-sensitive artificial larynx that is a combination of genetic engineering and cybernetics.

* COMMUNICATIVE TECHNOLOGY / SOFTWARE. genji’s prosthetics and robotic body are ultimately owned by the United States military, and their DARPA program, in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations. as such, it was important to protect their asset. He was built with safeguarding software and advanced end-to-end quantum encryption:  difficult to hack, but highly skilled hackers may be capable of interfering with certain functions (example: sombra). genji is equipped with a built-in communicative device that can be accessed through wi-fi, and its messaging system is heavily encrypted. messages (images, texts, voice, etc.) are routinely destroyed after a certain amount of time. The comm was used exclusively for Blackwatch operations through a highly secure channel, which was also used to track him.

to avoid trade secrets being pilfered or exploited by enemies (i.e. if he were ever captured and dissected or forcibly taken apart with the intent of examination and replication), genji’s cybernetics would kill him instantly; residual software data will be erased or corrupted, and both his artificial heart and stomach will combust, destroying his body and everything within a fifteen yard radius. It was the government’s way of guaranteeing that their property would not be stolen.

when genji leaves Blackwatch, and eventually Overwatch (approximately a year before the organization’s disbandment, and six years before the recall), the software was overridden, and he was able to control his built-in communicative device (he now has an “airplane mode,” that also runs a background process cleaning the database file that stores his location information). He was also able to control the built-in detonation safeguard. as genji decided to travel the world, searching for meaning, he had completely shut off his comms and made it so that he was not traceable. as fate would have it, genji reactivates it five years later, ready to reconcile with his past...   only to receive winston’s recall message, just in time.
