Ramses Recommends: The nostalgically chipper frights of Necro Nancy 64
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welcome back!
This time around I have something more substantial for you all.
Necro Nancy first came around as a comic on it's creator's newgrounds, which can be found here
Since then, the same newgrounds as well as Macabre's youtube channel have become home to a series of retro game styled animations following the titular revenant and her friends' antics in the monster filled city of Necropolis.
If you're a Spooky Month fan, or have an interest in low poly stuff in general, you'll find plenty to love in this series. And with it's 3rd episode already in (early) production, there's plenty more to come.
Should you be interested, I suggest viewing the series before continuing.
So, for those who came back, or didn't even leave, Let's dive a bit further into what makes this gem click!
Tumblr media
Firstly, Nancy herself. She's a well rounded protagonist, being able to work as both a source of comedy and as the voice of reason with both Ghoulia and Renwick. Her simple design combined with her expressive animation helps cement her as the core of the series.

Meanwhile, Ghoulia and Renwick act as great foils, complimenting Nancy as a character in there own ways.
Ghoulia being somewhat dismissive while also trying to hide how much she cares for Nancy makes their interactions a lot of fun, her voice acting also makes her very entertaining in her own right.
Renwick's know-it-all attitude paired with his impulsive nature makes him the most unpredictable of the main cast, which is also what makes him fun.
Tumblr media
Lastly, Necropolis is a great setting in potential for stories and even lore. It's also stylistically rich with both the n64 aesthetic and the actual designs of the individual locations, making for a very captivating experience.
And there you have it, a brilliantly made and criminally overlooked series with a unique way of blending together many familiar elements into something with a very distinct and thoroughly appealing.
If I were you, I'd keep a loose eyeball on this ;) Thanks for reading!

Top 5 James Bond soundtracks.
Tumblr media
The greatest action/spy franchise of all time easily has some of the best soundtracks out there. Though it would be difficult to find anyone who will agree with your choice for the top 5, here’s mine from first to fifth.
On Her majesty’s secret service, 1969.
Tumblr media
This is my favourite Bond film for many reasons and one those was the score. John Barry was the master of espionage soundtracks, having already made the music for 5 previous Bond films. This one is different in many ways. The audience were accustomed to having a song accompanying the opening credits but Barry was worried the title would be difficult to fit into a song so opted for a musical piece. The opening music for me is as memorable as Monty Norman’s opening ‘Gun Barrel’ sequence. The piece is used in various scenes in the film like the great ‘Ski Chase’. Barry opted to use the Moog synthesizer as the baseline which adds more punch to a very quick theme. There’s ‘We have all the time in the world’, a song made famous by Louis Armstrong and was actually composed by John Barry for the film it’s something that isn’t overly well known. It’s dramatic, cool, sad and quintessentially the 60’s at its best.
The Living Daylights, 1987.

This is John Barry’s last outing as composer in the Bond franchise and an album that changed musical direction of Bond. Due to the success of Duran Durans 1985 ‘A View to a Kill’ the producers thought the natural step would be to continue the trend so A-ha were given job. Barry was an innovator and moved with the times when it came to musical advances. We hear the introduction of sequenced electronic rhythm tracks overdubbed with the orchestra, apparently new for the time. It’s the kind of push forward stylistically that Bond needed adding the fact that this was a darker Bond, played by Timothy Dalton, everything was fresh. On a quick note ‘where has everybody gone’ by the Pretenders and Barry is a fantastic song, with the music being used for the villain Necros....... I swear you can hear musical influences from this album on the brilliant Nintendo 64 game Goldeneye.
A View To A Kill, 1985.
Tumblr media
Sir Roger Moore is my favourite James Bond and this film undeservedly gets slated, and at the age of 57 this was to be Moore’s last film. The films theme is used in parts during the course of the action sequences, Barry called these Leitmotifs ‘action themes’. Each being slightly different with excellent guitar work which was standout for me growing up along with heavy drums. Apart from Duran Durans theme ‘Airship to Silicon Valley’, ‘he’s dangerous’ and ‘Golden Gate Fight’ are the best on the album.
You Only Live Twice, 1967.
Another John Barry album! This is a magnificent soundtrack with the absolutely beautiful and timeless ‘Capsule in Space’. Nancy Sinatra lends her voice to a warm opening theme, which is used along with ‘Capsule in Space’ in Barry’s trademark Leitmotifs throughout. This film was set almost completely in Japan, unlike the usual multi country locations of every other Bond film and Japanese music is fused wonderfully within the album. Another big one that always stuck in my head when I was little is ‘A Drop in the Ocean’ and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Finally a soundtrack that isn’t one of Barry’s but it so easily could have been! Casino Royale was up there for fifth as well. But.......
Live and Let Die, 1973.
Tumblr media
George Martin often referred to as the ‘fifth Beatle’ got his time to shine, while he had been associated with Bond in the producing capacity on two previous themes. It was Paul McCartney who insisted that he got the job of composer. If there’s such a thing as a more well known Bond theme then this one of them, it’s also the first to be from the Rock genre, it’s far heavier than anything heard previously. The album mixes Rock and Funk along with upbeat blues for the funeral scene. Parts follow that cheesy 70’s Funk style but I love all that, this album has a great variation of styles and an excellent second version of ‘Live and Let Die’ by BJ Arnau who has a part as a nightclub singer in the film. It’s the album on this list that takes itself less seriously and that was the direction Roger Moore Bond was heading.
