Five architecture and design events in March from Dezeen Events Guide
Melbourne Design Week 2021, a virtual edition of SXSW and Forward Festival 2021, which will feature a live-streamed talk by 3D makeup artist Ines Alpha, are among the architecture and design events listed in Dezeen Events Guide this March.
Other events taking place in March include an exhibition about the impact of monsoons on the built environment and an online showcase of experimental design from Denmark.
Read on for details and visit Dezeen Events Guide for more architecture and design events around the world.
Above: Forward Festival 2021 is taking place in March. Top image: 3D makeup artist Ines Alpha will be giving a talk as part of the conference
Monsoonal Municipalities 4 to 29 March
This online exhibition will showcase the results of a five-year research project looking at the impact that changing monsoon climates have had on cities in Bangladesh, India and Myanmar
Funded by the European Research Council and organised by the University of Westminster's School of Architecture and Cities, the exhibition explores the rainy season as an "atmospheric force" that organises local life, landscape architecture and the built environment.
An accompanying events programme will look at how this topic intersects with issues of climate change and colonialism, as well as posing the question of whether London is itself a monsoonal city.
Forward Festival Munich 2021 12 and 13 March
Maverick graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister and 3D makeup artist Ines Alpha feature in the wide-ranging speaker lineup of Munich's Forward Festival, which will be live-streamed and available on-demand throughout March.
Through a series of talks and online workshops, the event is set to investigate the increasing digitisation of society and how this process has been accelerated due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Seminal British photographer Martin Parr, who has documented the idiosyncrasies of modern life for more than 50 years, will be discussing what it takes to have a long, successful and enduringly creative career before answering viewer questions as part of a live Q&A.
The Mindcraft Project highlights experimental Danish design
SXSW Online 16 to 20 March
Austin's annual South by Southwest conference is going virtual this year but its programme of keynotes and discussions remains similarly expansive and star-studded.
Several of this year's sessions are focused on life beyond earth, with Harvard professor Avi Loeb weighing up the existence of extraterrestrial beings, NASA astronauts discussing what it's like to go to space and Tim Ellis, founder of aerospace manufacturing company Relativity Space, extolling the benefits of 3D-printed rockets.
Elsewhere, DJ Steve Aoki is set to predict the impact of 5G on live music experiences while one-time US presidential candidate and current transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg will explore how technological innovations are transforming mobility.
The Mindcraft Project 17 March
The Mindcraft exhibition has been a reliable fixture at Milan design week since 2008, returning every year to present the best experimental design and architecture from Denmark.
This year's online edition will highlight projects from 10 different studios that utilise both craft techniques and modern, digital fabrication methods. Contributors include Stine Mikkelsen, architecture studio Archival Studies and design duo Frederik Nystrup-Larsen and Oliver Sundquist, whose work is featured in Noma, one of Denmark's most famous restaurants.
This is the second virtual edition of The Mindcraft Project, following last year's Virtual Design Festival showcase featuring a chair made from mushroom mycelium and another designed by an algorithm.
A Melbourne Design Week exhibition will explore alternative housing models such as the Nightingale 1 by Breathe Architecture
Melbourne Design Week 2021 26 March to 5 April
More than 300 exhibitions, launches, workshops and films are part of what Melbourne Design Week is calling its "largest programme to date".
Under the topic Design the World You Want, the event will look at how designers can help to create a better future for the planet and its people by focusing on issues of community, care and climate.
Highlights include an MPavilion exhibition exploring Melbourne's alternative housing models, featuring Assemble and Nightingale Housing, as well as Open House Melbourne, which will host a programme of tours and talks celebrating local architecture.

Pavilion
Pavilion, light temporary or semipermanent structure used in gardens and pleasure grounds. Although there are many variations, the basic type is a large, light, airy garden room with a high-peaked roof resembling a canopy. It was originally erected, like the modern canvas marquee, for special occasions such as fetes, garden banquets, and balls, but it became more permanent, and by the late 17th century the word was used for any garden building designed for use on special occasions.

A Contemporary Modern Pavilion
The MPavilion in Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Gardens is a very unique pavilion even from all aspects. It can act as an allusion upon first site due to the mound of vegetation that extends to the roof. Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten designed this amphitheater based off designs of age-old amphitheaters.  The designers stated that their amphitheater was built to, “provoke all kinds of activities through its configurable nature and a materiality that relates to its direct surroundings.” The grandstands are even movable to accommodate the crowd that is expected.
The amphitheater stuck out to me when I first saw it because of how diverse it was. I immediately saw the shrubs and greenery that protruded to the roof. Upon further examining, I found the inside very intriguing and modern. The curved seating reminded me of the detail in the reindeer pavilion. I find it interesting that the builders incorporated the multicolor lights on the inside as well as the translucent roof in order to take in the outdoors environment. Overall, I think the designers did an incredible job covering many aspects of architecture in their design.

Materia's Design Week Mexico pavilion casts shadow patterns across itself
White concrete columns intersect with wooden beams to form the pavilion for this year's Design Week Mexico, designed by Mexican architecture studio Materia.
Materia, which is led by architects Gustavo Carmona and Lisa Beltran, chose to create a place for contemplation and reflection – as well as peaceful activities like yoga – for the 2017 edition of the annual commission.
Installed to coincide with the citywide Design Week Mexico event, the pavilion is seen as Mexico City's equivalent of London's Serpentine Gallery Pavilion and Melbourne's MPavilion.
It stands beside the Museo Tamayo in Chapultepec Park, and is backed by both the museum and the design week.
Eye-shaped in plan, the structure comprises two curved rows of white concrete columns. These 70 identical cuboids measure 4.8 metres tall and are linked close to their tops in pairs by pine wood beams.
As the timber braces are all the same length, they overhang at the corners, while extra vertical elements continue beyond the beams.
The pavilion is oriented east-west, so the sun's path tracks overhead. During the day, the shadows cast by the beams onto the columns, and by the columns onto the ground, move slowly around the space to map the passage of time.
"The pavilion serves as a fragmenting filter of the surrounding gardens and the infinity of the sky," said a statement from Design Week Mexico.
"Its language expresses contrast and duality: object and void coming together in an intertwined fabric of contemporary spirit. Made with craft and distilled technique, the space invites reflection and contemplation."
This year's Design Week Mexico was due to take place last week, but was pushed back after the city suffered a deadly earthquake on 19 September 2017.
The pavilion had just started construction when the quake hit. It was designed to withstand seismic activity up to magnitude 8.5, but Carmona told journalists the team was still concerned that they would incur setbacks.
However, the project went ahead and met the new deadline, taking just six weeks to complete from inception.
Design Week Mexico runs from 11 to 15 October 2017, with talks, exhibitions and installations taking place across the country's capital.
Last year's pavilion for the event was formed from a stack of empty cuboids representing both museum vitrines and coffins, created by Nikolaus Hirsch and Michel Müller.
