Taking innovative design to new levels at the Lexus Design Awards
The Lexus Design Awards are a prestigious opportunity for designers to showcase innovative, fresh technologies which focus not only on solving a problem, but also encompass the concept of a sustainable, interconnected planet. The aim of the awards is to recognise products and technologies which are future-facing, making best use of bio-degradable, sustainable materials and/or low-carbon energy options. As in previous years, the 2019 entries were of an exceptionally high calibre. Over 1,500 entries were received, which the judges had to whittle down to a mere half-a-dozen. The six finalists were invited to attend a two-day workshop in New York City, where they were assigned mentors who worked with them to transform their concept designs into prototypes. The finalists represented countries from across the globe, including Russia, the US, China and the Philippines. Entries were varied, including everything from fresh applications for desert sand through to sustainable housing strategies which can protect properties from flooding and innovative technology to cope more effectively with off-shore oil spills. Other entries were a technology which channelled the energy expelled by plane jet engines during take-off and used it to power other things within the airport, and Solgami, a blind for flat-dwellers which can […]

Luxury interior design in the wild
A safari holiday can be the journey of a lifetime – but you might not realise that it can offer luxury interior design as well as exotic animals. But the Thornybush Collection has long been dedicated to blending luxury and comfort with wild nature. Their new project, the Saseka Tented Camp, offers a chance for visitors to relax in style. By day, guests at the camp can take advantage of the guided safaris through South Africa’s stunning Thornybush Nature Reserve. At night, they return to their luxury lodgings beside the Monwana River. With its name taken from the Tsonga word for beautiful, the Saseka offers luxury inside and out. Each of the 10 tented suites, which measure 200m², boasts a private pool, sundeck, and outdoor shower, and is air-conditioned for comfort. However, despite all the modern conveniences, this safari lodge is designed to blend in with the magnificence of the natural surroundings. Thoughtfully designed by Silvio Rech & Lesley Carstens Architecture and Design, this is a modern, sleek take on a classic Out of Africa experience. This safari lodge draws its inspiration from the nature that surrounds it. Lesley Carstens says, “We looked at the indigenous landscape – the flora […]

Designhounds KBIS 2019 – Thermador
BlogTour KBIS veteran sponsor Thermador returned to sponsor our first ever Designhounds KBIS tour and rolled out the red carpet for the hounds. The Designhounds were ushered into a private lounge complete with luxurious seating – a must during a long day at the trade show and yes, Martinis! The Thermador team guided the group through their fantastic new products with an informative presentation followed by a detailed booth tour showcasing their smart home products and more.
Designer Juanita Galliford was inspired by an art installation in Milan when she created this entertainment kitchen center.
Home Connect- The Designhounds got the full details about Thermador’s latest smart home program, ‘Home Connect’. It is the first program and app of its kind that connects home appliances from both, Thermador products and third party brands into one single app. Home Connect gives the user the ability to manage appliances via app remote control, monitoring and even starting the appliance. A fun showcase of this capability was having a dishwasher play “Shine Bright Like a Diamond” by Rihanna when the cycle was complete.
From a culinary perspective, Home Connect can offer recipes that provide instructions to the appliance including all meal details and information about the recipes. Learn more about Home Connect here.
Freedom® Induction Cooktop- Thermador is a leader in the industry when it comes to cooking appliance technology. One of our favorite products is the Freedom® Induction Cooktop. The entire surface can be used as a large cooking area to hold up to 6 pots or pans while being heated simultaneously in any position. The user controls the cooktop with an enhanced full-color touchscreen. Talk about elevating the cooking experience! More about the induction cooktop here.
Thermador also introduced the Designhounds to their design savvy Masterpiece® Collection and Professional Collection. The collections have been updated with vibrant color options, metallic grey glass, and stainless steel handles to elevate any kitchen design and culinary experience.
A big thank you to Thermador for sponsoring Designhounds KBIS 2019!

Designhounds KBIS 2019 – Wellborn Releases New Collections
Designhounds KBIS was thrilled to welcome back former BlogTour KBIS sponsor Wellborn Cabinet Inc. Wellborn operates out of their own timber processing mill in Ashland, Alabama, hand selecting the finest solid woods and popular hardwoods utilized in the kitchen and bath industry. The Designhounds were in for a treat as they were introduced to several new collections that greatly expand the company’s product offering, particularly on the modern kitchen spectrum.
It was impossible to miss the Wellborn’s new European Minimalistic collection at the center of their booth space during KBIS 2019. The new design is inspired by European kitchens with clean lines, high-gloss finishes and a focus on efficiency and functionality.
Another exciting addition was the integration of LED lighting in cabinets, adding not only convenience and functionality but a beautiful and unexpected design element.
With a name like Wellborn, an increased focus on wellness is no surprise and the Zen Spa collection definitely made us go “ahhh”. The bathroom features Wellborn’s Aspire program with Bel-Air and Arcadia door styles and drawers equipped with natural hardwood dovetail drawers.  Feeling zen yet?
For a more traditional feel, our favorite collection was the Estate Series featuring traditional style cabinetry with a French Cafe twist. Layering in contemporary design elements really gave this design its added visual appeal – we’re in love with this version of the classic baker’s rack!
From modern to zen to a nod to Paris, Wellborn had it all and always with a focus on extraordinary quality and functionality.
A big thank you to Wellborn for hosting the Designhounds at KBIS 2019 and providing an up, close and personal look at their stunning new collections with incredible features.

Designhounds KBIS 2019- Thompson Traders Copper Sinks and more
Designhounds KBIS 2019 had the utmost pleasure of welcoming first time sponsor Thompson Traders. Family owned Thompson Traders manufactures brilliant hand-crafted copper sinks, tubs and accessories for the kitchen and bath and when we say family, wow, what a family. Founded by the lovely Alejandra Ochoa De Thompson and her equally lovely daughter Samantha Thompson, the duo worked with coppersmiths from Alejandra’s hometown in Santa Clara Del Cobre, Mexico to bring their creative vision of beautiful copper products to the kitchen and bath. Husband Cliff Thompson and sons Cliff Thompson Jr., President of Thompson Traders and JJ Thompson, Vice President of Operations currently play integral parts of the family-owned company as well. The family warmly welcomed Designhounds with wine, big smiles, thoughtful treats and the disarming charm that translates into every piece they make.
What caught our attention apart from the stand-out copper work throughout our booth tour visit with Thompson Traders was the brand new black matte finish being offered as part of their Oaxaca Collection, named after a region in Mexico known for their black clay pottery. Founder and Creative Director Alejandra Ochoa de Thompson and the Thompson Traders’ expert coppersmiths in Santa Clara del Cobre worked diligently to ensure the Matte Black celebrates copper and its texture. Pretty sexy right? Learn more about the new finish here.
Visiting the Thompson Traders booth during KBIS 2019 was a feast for the eyes. How gorgeous is this Nuvo Frida Tub and lighting installation? See the tub here.
It wouldn’t be a Designhounds tour without a dip in a tub. And they do it well! Here you have Jana, Claire and Anna but you can meet all 23 of them here.
Thompson Traders is King when it comes to copper textures and artistry making a statement in the kitchen and bath space.
Thompson Traders pride themselves in their carefully and expertly crafted copper, but most importantly they are a family that provides the utmost hospitality to their guests, customers and friends. A big thank you to Thompson Traders for putting together a lovely, inviting and engaging event for our group and treating Modenus so well. Cheers!

Designhounds KBIS 2019- Caesarstone wows with new surfaces at The New American Home
It wouldn’t be a proper Designhounds KBIS tour without a great party and gorgeous views. Caesarstone spoiled the group with an incredible evening at The New American Home in Henderson, Nevada where their new surfaces were revealed via…drumroll please…painted models! The group enjoyed a beautiful evening touring the stunning home where Caesarstone displayed their latest quartz collections throughout.
Photography Credit: Caesarstone & TNAH
Caesarstone, official sponsor of the The New American Home welcomed the Designhounds to the stunning home with delectable cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and most importantly, fantastic views in an incredible mountain side setting.
Photography Credit: Caesarstone & TNAH
As a fun and surprising element, Caesarstone launched their Metropolitan Collection with the clever use of painted models in addition to multiple finishes being featured throughout the home.
Photography Credit: Caesarstone & TNAH
More about Metropolitan Collection. The collection is inspired by industrial design elements including 5 new quartz styles cultivated to reflect the textures of industrial art and architecture. The collection features a first-ever weathered patina quartz.
Our favorite finish was easily the Cloudburst Concrete from the Metropolitan Collection seen above at The New American Home. The Rough finish perfectly simulates the organic texture, patina and depth of concrete and other industrial materials with each slab showing enough variation to keep the material unique yet durable and easy to maintain.
You can see the full collection here – which one is your favorite?

Transforming your garden with large scale sculpture
No garden is complete without a main focal point, but it can often be difficult to find the right idea. Water features require frequent upkeep, and not every landscape has an ancient tree to draw the eye. Many garden owners favour a beautiful sculpture for their garden, selected with both the context of plants and landscape and the tastes of those using the garden in mind. Ideal for any garden, regardless of size For those choosing a sculpture for larger gardens, the options are endless. It is important, however, to consider a statement piece that won’t get lost against an imposing landscape. The right large scale garden sculpture will allow designers to play with space, adding a sense of height to areas with low flower beds, or creating a sense of perspective against an impressive row of trees. In a smaller garden, a sculpture is the perfect way to bring in elements of character and class and to accentuate the planting schemes that gardeners working with less space spend so much time perfecting. The magic of professional sculpture While there is the option to buy a sculpture ready-made online or from a garden centre, nothing will feel quite so beautiful […]

The Sofa & Chair Company ‘Partners’ Pop-Up
It’s London Design Week this week and there are so many exciting new launches, products, collaborations and pop-ups that I can’t wait to see! One that I’ve been looking forward to is the The Sofa and Chair Company pop-up. The luxury sofa and furniture specialists have teamed up with leading fabric houses Designers Guild, Jason D’Souza and Romo to re-imagine some of their classic pieces in the new Spring 2019 collections from the fabric houses. The pop-up is titled ‘Partners’ and is located at 320 Kings Road, Chelsea between 9-24th March. ‘Partners’ presents emerging interior design trends through seven different concepts demonstrated in room sets, the underlying thread through all of these is the interaction between colour and texture with colour ways such as green, mustard, pink and blue working alongside intricate textured weaves and abstract prints. Key pieces on display will be the Parker chair, adorned with Jason D’Souza rich caramel fabric set against a Romo linen sheer curtain and the iconic Sofa & Chair Company love sofa has a smart new look in a sophisticated check from Romo which you will be able to see in the window display.   The bedroom features a calm palette of green […]

Victorian Townhouse by luxury interior design studio LLI Design
LLI Design recently completed the full refurbishment of a stunning Victorian townhouse based in London, lovingly restoring many period features for a stylish and comfortable finish. The client had expressed a desire for modern touches to the property, but without wanting to sacrifice the phenomenal period charm which had initially attracted them to the building. Taking this into consideration, LLI Design decided to work in a way which would modernise the house at the same time as accentuating those Victorian features, such as the ornate plaster ceilings and the sweeping staircase. A fusion of old and new With the property’s Victorian heritage utmost in mind, many of the alterations the LLI Design team made were to harmonise those stylish modern touches with the unique historical features already preserved. In the entrance hallway, the designers opted for a classic black and white pattern which gave the illusion of added light and space, while a stunning Victorian-inspired nursery suite was added to the front of the house. In the living and dining rooms, the high Victorian ceilings were carefully restored and new life breathed into the ornate plasterwork and coving. To accentuate the wonderful Victorian fireplaces, the team commissioned bespoke joinery for […]

How to Design a Luxury Bedroom
Image Credit: Iggi Interior Design, Photography by Patrick Steel One of the most intimate places in your home is the bedroom and its interior design most often reflects your preferences. Needless to say, there are a plethora of options when it comes to designing your bedroom, although paying attention to particular features can assist you in designing your desired luxury bedroom. When beginning to design your luxury bedroom, make a note of what you’ve seen around that you like and also think about the sort of positive and relaxed feeling you want to invoke. You can then begin to note which pieces, whether decorative or practical, need to be removed, adjusted or added to be in line with your luxury interior design. Though you can design your luxury bedroom as it suits you, more often than not intricate details and layering are key to a professional look. This blog post covers the basic elements of your bedroom design which need to be catered to when it comes to designing your own and maybe even an award winning luxury bedroom. The Bed When it comes to the luxury interior design of your bedroom the bed acts as the centrepiece, with its […]

Feng shui open plan living room ideas
Successful interior design for living rooms can be very reliant on the feng shui principles of the ancient Chinese. Good feng shui creates harmony in homes and relies on the best placement of furniture and objects to build up positive and healing energy flows. Many people have said that creating feng shui layouts in the home has been really beneficial for their mental health and wellbeing. The following tips can help you plan a feng shui layout for your large open plan living space: One of the main feng shui principles to follow when planning your living area is to keep lines of sight as open as possible. This builds positive chi energy flow and adds a wide-open feel to the layout while increasing the amount of natural light in the room. Furniture with a low profile should be used to avoid blocking chi energies and colour schemes that delight the eye of any observer should be utilised through the entire space. It’s also important to set identifiable boundaries within any open plan layout in order to define the purpose of each space. If the room encompasses a kitchen area, dining area and open plan living room, you can define […]

Lalique and Fromental collaborate on ‘Hirondelles’
I don’t often report back on new collections or product launches as brands do communicate these pretty well and I don’t like repeating what’s already out on the web, but this collaboration between these interior super brands got me very excited. So much so, that I’ve been sending the images that I took at the press preview to a lot of my VIP contacts telling them to have a look. The Hirondelles is a classic chinoiserie style pattern designed by master wallpaper designers Fromental. Being very careful to leave space for the finest crystal makers, Lalique, to add their magnetic Hirondelles (swallows) and dahlias to the design. Together, the design leaps off the wall and surprises you with the most beautiful light reflection off the silk paper and crystal pieces. At this level of design, it’s always about the detail, and the find hand painting and embroidery sets this design apart. The clever use of magnets within the swallows, means that this design is interactive too. Obviously it needs to be installed on a magnetic surface, but you are able to move the swallows around, and that’s very special and unique. Both houses are experts in their field and if […]
